    That pump makes oil foamy and as such oil use more space. Also car should be level or slightly jacked up on oposite side of the fill plug. Another great video. Keep it up.

    • @rdownmakeITbetter
      @rdownmakeITbetter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, pump is great for extracting oil but rubbish for this. I use a large funnel with a long piece of hose attached. Feed hose down to fill point and top up funnel somewhere convenient. No fighting a syringe and no foaming of the oil.

      @milosilic1456 James' fill plug was facing the back of the car, and he jacked it up in the back, which makes sense to me, but if I get you right, you suggest jacking up the front of the car if the fill plug faces the back. Or am I getting you wrong?

    Well done. You probably saved £1000. Plus the confidence the job was done correctly. I would suggest wetting the bearings with gearbox oil during assembly especially if leaving a box dry for a while before fitting and running for first time. 👏👏👏

    Good job! One thing I recomend to do - change those rusty cooling hose steel clamps. One of those on the upper radiator hose failed on me last month. Coolant everywhere, had to tow my car to the shop.

    Nice one, good job. To get that last litre in, just warm it up a bit and run it through the gears. Once they’re lubricated it should take the rest. I bought one of those pumps, they are good!

    My God, I've just had all the gearbox out doing a clutch job on my focus only to realise I also have the same issue! I had no idea what it was until I watched this series. IB5 looks a bit more challenging though than the Skoda, so I think I'll probably find a 2nd hand box. Good job on this series so far though James, great content!

    Hi Jame ,its great to see a successful end result to a very involved job !
    And proves you have the b....s to tackle any job big or small so Big pat on your back 👏 👍🙂
    When I replaced the gearbox oil on my 500 Abarth I lifted the back level with the front and put a spirit level on the roof so it was at the correct level and the whole 2 litres went in fine also I used a length of garden hose shoved it in the filler hole with a funnel attached to the top to refill the gearbox. 👍🙂

  • @Tarten21
    @Tarten21 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome that is a huge task taking a gearbox apart granted the gearbox is a fairly simple one but even so still a lot to break and go wrong i certainly would not attempt one roll on the next project great channel.

    Great job. The other jobs are pretty easy. The window regulator often fails on Skodas and the airbag light will just be a loose connection. Get it a new timing belt and water pump and a service and it will be a great little car.

    Great job. For example, vw passat b6 with gearbox (code 02s) mounted on the engine must filled through reverse gear switch hole. "Fill plug" hole is not meant to be used for refilling while the gearbox is on the engine. That is according to official vw service manual. I suggest you to search for manual with description of correct refill procedure and you'll know why those 200ml left.

    Your video has been very valuable to me.i have done this to my own fabia but I was not brave enough to rebuild the gearbox.gearbox specialist told me it has to be filled with 3 litres and I found this to be completely filling it .
    Doing this before it was fitted.i changed my main seal and clutch.theres a hose pipe clip at the back of the engine which gets in the way of removal and fitting

    It's worth saying that filling a gearbox for the first time after it's been overhauled is a bit different to changing the gearbox oil as a service job. When the box has been stripped down then it's full of air when it goes back in. Pockets of air can get caught inside the gearbox casing when you try to fill it up again, especially inside the diff housing, so the gearbox often won't take the full amount of oil it's supposed to. Drive the car around a little bit, or run it back and forth a few times each day if it's off the road due to the MoT having run out, and you'll usually find that, after a week or so, it'll take a bit more oil, maybe up to another half-a-litre. Needless to say, this issue tends to be worse with front- or four-wheel drive vehicles due to them usually having a diff housing built into the gearbox casing where rear-wheel drive gearboxes generally don't, aside from vehicle like Porsches and Alfa-Romeos with transaxles...

  • @malcolmyoung7866
    @malcolmyoung7866 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi James it has been mentioned already the pump has aerated the oil when it was initially started so this will take up more space than just oil itself. Basically the air needs to ‘bleed’ itself to the surface inside the gearbox before a ‘true’ level can be determined. Gear oil is slightly thicker than engine oil so this may take a bit more time. Also IIRC if the car is jacked up on the filler side this aids the filling process. Any excess will flow out of the fill hole when returned to level then you can replace the fill plug. Had this issue on my Fiat Seciento when I changed the cough due the gearbox oil too, had to do this to achieve the correct level. Well done Dude. Also what are those plugs in you ear (what brand) as I am a ‘Cool Dad/Grandad’ and like to listen to my tunes when working etc...

    James have you put the bolts in on the ball joints up from the botton nuts on top? The correct way is bolts down from the top nuts on the bottom, it's a safty thing, should the nuts come loose the bolts will not just drop out if bolts are put in from the top, great video only every took one gearbox apart in my time as a mechanic

    @Danidasanic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I changed mine 0A4 gearbox , wich is a different version of this gearbox , I used Fuchs FE 75W oil . On my mk7 the gb is tilted towards the bonnet , so the correct procedure to fill it up is by using the reverse-gear switch hole (10mm hole) and fill it up with 1.7L for my gearbox (1.9L dry) . The bottom pins should fill with aprox 0.2L of oil , so you should correct the gearbox oil level after 5km (actually the correct procedure is jacking up the car and put it in gear for 5min, if i call correctly, but its the same thing)

    i replaced the selector shaft seal on my mk4 fiesta and when i refilled it with oil i read that the level was meant to be 5-10mm below the fill plug and ive had the same thing on telehandlers ive worked on so i would be a bit careful in assuming that the fill plug is also a level but still very good video just trying to help u out. i work on tractors mostly and they have loads of level plugs and the perfect level is when it is just dripping out very slightly but im sure it cant make that much difference
    i just had a pipe going into the gearbox and coming out the top of the engine bay with a funnel on but this method with the pump looks far more convenient
