What are the odds that the person who told him to list it for $1100 knows the buyer?
I was the one who sent the story to Sticky, and I explained the situation to my wife first, who came to the same conclusion immediately. No way that book should have sold like every other green label. The back story should have been disclosed.
I was thinking the same thing. The. Same. Thing. This is what stinks about the hobby.
I went back to the start of this year to see who claimed the book on elite and I don’t see that book listed on their page. Did they delete the evidence. I wish the seller would share the name of the buyer. Doesn’t have to be shared to everyone but maybe just to SG
@@comicsandculture I've noticed they delete/archive posts once they have been claimed. I don't suspect it's done for any wrong reason other than to stop people from contacting interested users trying to sell similar books. If you have ever participated or asked a question in one of those posts, you will always get messages from people wanting to sell you a similar book.
Wait a minute........he didn't know it was an MJ until he cracked it? Why would someone marry the MJ insert and then sell it as a normal ASM 129? Also why did he crack it instead of CGC? Fishy.
The bigger scam is that people have been convinced that having additional ads in comics somehow makes them worth more.

People like the scarcity. I like looking for star stamps because that means they were sold on a military base. Whichever version it's a piece of history
No one made anyone sell anything. We all sell and take hits. We buy PGX with extreme worry as they miss everything and CGC is not obligated to call because for all they knew, the guy who sent it in could have married the insert. That's why you have a screen option before it is slabbed and graded. Elite makes a recommendation on recent sales and you can choose to sell or not. But under money duress you sell. He realizes all of this. He maintains a positive attitude because you don't have a better option. And it is a lesson learned.
How bout crack it out remove the insert and resubmit for a blue 8.5?

It's a hobby for a reason. Hobbies cost money. Love finding deals to trade and maybe get some credit at a store to buy the comics I like! No one is making a good living flipping a few comics.

The guy who bought it for 1200 will pop the staples replace them with correct staples from say a 190 ASM book and pull out the mark jewelers and bam it’s back to a 9.2-9.4 occhhh
Correct me if I’m wrong here but if you crack a CGC slab and resubmit then the pop count is ruined. Since we know this is not uncommon then wouldn’t it be safe to assume most CGC pop counts are incorrect?
You are supposed to send back CGC the labels but I have never done it

This one doesn’t make much sense either. I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to marry the MJ insert himself. Also, calling out a consignment seller for not liking their suggested price when he could have simple said “no” and tried selling it somewhere else.

Buying PGX with the intent to regrade and/or flip is an obvious risk that speculators take. Play stupid games...
You buy a pgx, expect a 2 grade drop switching to cgc minimum. Thats actually pretty good.

You will hear from the pumpers this is a time to buy. Be careful moving forward as the economy continues to struggle. Scammers in the comic industry will get more desperate as easy money has dried up.
You have to do opposite of the herd. Right now everyone is ultra bearish.

How do we know this guy didn't try to get over by actually marrying a Mark Jewelers in there or bought a fraudulent one an didn't detect it? PGX is notorious for grading Frankensteined books. It's green because the mark Jewelers might have never belonged in the book in the first place
If PGX is involved it going to be a big loss. Yes this is very sad indeed.
If you buy a PGX book expect it to be approximately 2 grades higher than CGC would have graded it.
Also anything PGX I drop 3 grades

I’m confused. The guy first said that it was a PGX 9.2 and later said it was a PGX 9.4. Regardless, was the book labeled as a Mark Jewelers variant by PGX or did the seller inform him that it was a MJV? Either way, isn’t $4000 an absolutely ridiculous high price to pay for it?
Yeah something doesn't add up. Guessing this guy married the insert himself. $4000 was actually a good price during the comic boom. Especially if he could resubmit it and get a bump.
I would never buy a PGX book at full market value. A person I pick randomly from my local comic book store can grade better than PGX. I have seen PGX books given a normal grade, and the book is obviously restored or qualified.

Ive bought 2 pgx before and cracked em and sent to cgc and they both got the exact same grade from cgc. I have heard lots of horror stories though, so i would never buy an expensive pgx slab. Mycomicshop wont even accept pgx slabs on consignment.
Hey whats up? l dont trust the " experts". l have a large collection of Marvel and DC grails. If and when l sell them, l will grade them myself , maybe get some advice from the "experts " and ask what l think is fair. lf the buyer has a problem with it, they dont have to buy it. Only dude l took advice from was John Dolmayan, that was 16yrs ago, he had a comic booth at Frank & Sons collectibles before he formed Torpedo Comics in Vegas. He told me back then, buy all the Gold and Silver Age grail you can because in a few years, the're going to explode in price. He wasnt lying.

Cgc probably got it wrong. Who is inserting mark jewelers and why doesn’t make sense. Not logical. But a pgx 9.2 is a Cgc 8.5-9.0. I had an x-men 50 come back green label staples replaced from Cgc. I told my grading guy no way staples were replaced doesn’t make sense. Cracked the book open and sent it back in came back blue label and .5 higher grade.
He took a bath....... but if he brought it before Mark jewelers started to become a thing why was it married to the book also why would PGX acknowledge the Mark Jewelers.
Keep a watch on elite comics.....bet one comes up for sale with some of the same defects but without the insert.

What I think happened is that someone took a jewellery shop ad from another lower value book and inserted it into this Book to bump the price up.

This is a lesson in compounding damage started by purchasing a PGX slab.
Ouch. But I think this is the kind of thing that happens when you sell under duress. He needed some money for something big in his life so he may have made a bad decision or trusted the wrong people and just took what he could get. Reminded me when I needed to sell my books or have the pickup repo'd. I took what I could get for them and kept on trucking... that I could have gotten more for them wasn't even really a consideration since I got what I needed.
I really feel for this guy but I don't understand how you think that it was CGC's job to contact him regarding the insert. They are grading the book that he sent them. If he had any doubts about it up front he should have contacted them to see if he could have the book returned as is if there was any indication that it would receive either a qualified or restoration label. Who he needs to be contacting though is PGX to get his money back as they are the ones that originally graded the book and either did not pick up on the married insert or they willfully did it. Then again is PGX even still around
CGC offers restoration removal. Why wouldn't they offer the service if they already have the book? They shouldn't have graded the book at all. From their perspective, they are receiving a book that someone is trying to scam them with to get the Blue Label. They should have given the customer the benefit of the doubt and offered to remove it for a price or not grade it at all. Elite undersold this, but this could have also been used to scam another less knowledgeable collector into believing it was a Mark Jeweler.
Take out the Mark Jewlers insert and while the slightly rusty staples are open, replace them with nice staples from a doner Marvel comic from the same time period. I think it will come back a Universal in the low 9's.

I never trusted elite comics, I'm glad they are being mentioned for what they are.
Here's my take. I think this guy did the right thing at the end, after making several bad decisions. He cut his losses and got out of there. He shouldn't have bought the PGX book to begin with, and before you submit books you had better know how to grade yourself. Know the signs of restoration and tampering. Know who to contact for questions.

I think PGX has a little bit of the blame . The person who married the insert with the book has the most blame . And Elite has blame also for telling to sell so low. Definitely sounds like someone who knows them bought it for cheap. And they will remove it and replace staples with period . correct ones. Make a couple of grand.
