I may have missed it but could you play the videos back on the trail camera’s screen? AVI files can definitely be challenging and hopefully in the future manufacturers will gravitate away from that format towards the more standard mp4 👍

Thank you Dave for asking me about that as I meant to mention that. I could see that the files were there on the camera and view them there. On the SD card the “thumbnails” were not viewable which I had not seen before and could not be opened on my laptop. I tried to open the files in an app called VLC that can read AVI files and I could open some of the files but the ratio of the video was incorrect so they filed maybe 2/3 of their video viewing window. I tried to save the files back to my phone, laptop and an SD card without success from there thinking I could crop the video to fit my screen to share but nothing else would open the files. So the video are there but cannot be opened or saved if that makes sense. I have wanted to add more cameras but hesitate bc of this issue as not everyone posts under their specs online what type of video files. Like the old Browning Apex cameras are AVI files but I read some of the newer cameras in that series are MP4. Recently bc of certain updates it seems that Apple has decided that AVI files aren’t something they are allowing to be edited in iMovie or even onto your camera roll. So when I used to grab let’s say 100-200 AVI clips to save to my camera roll it was fast like MP4 clips so took 20 sec to a couple minutes depending on camera. But now the time for AVI files to be saved is miserably low. I usually click a small group to upload at a time bc they will only come into my phone at a rate of about 1min or < per file. Ridiculous waste of my time. I am not sure the types of files of some of the security type styles of cameras I have tried but those files are compressed so save and upload quickly but again Apple has made it difficult for some of those types of files as well but in different ways. I had to save a video I made for a PTZ camera into a photo editor app called VN editor bc it would not save to my camera roll and then go directly to TH-cam from that app. So many of these problems were not there when Apple had the option of direct uploading of videos to TH-cam but when that vanished I feel like I’ve had to figure out lots of work around since then. I am not the most technically savvy person(went from never making a video, using a trail cam or editing to having 2 TH-cam channels)in the world so have definitely learned a lot and keep picking up tips as I go. Yes if everyone would just use MP4 format it would be really helpful. I read that you can convert the AVI files to MP4 but who wants to go through all these extra steps. Both novices and experienced users should be able to use a trail camera with ease. And with Apple’s decision to no longer support AVI files even if I can get a video I’ve made with those files to save back to my camera roll then at times I cannot export it out of iMovie so can’t upload it to TH-cam without the use of other apps. Been a truly frustrating experience. Thanks for stopping by Dave, Char

@@NorthMissouriOutdoorsI have actually never had this issue before where the video file would not save to the SD card. An issue I have had bf with some AVI files but not all just certain cameras is they will save to the SD card and save into my editor(iMovie) and I make the entire video then I am unable to export it to my camera roll to then upload it to TH-cam. One company asked me to send clips so they could analyze them and I could not bc they would not save to my camera roll or laptop. So I ended up with a camera I cannot use. This particular issue is new to me. If they saved to the SD card I would try a different editing app but no such luck. Hope you can figure out your issue.

Have you tried the app? I was able to download the photos and video to an iphone using the app.. worked well. Much easier than handling the SD card.

Hi there, I will definitely give be that a try when I have time. I’d love to be able to see what the videos are like. For me it is not easier to use the apps with WiFi bc it is not as fast. They all have different apps unless same brands I have nearly 20 cameras running right now and the way I do it is I have several SD cards(3-4) dedicated to each camera(labeled) and I go out and collect all cards and just replace the cards and take the full cards with me. I keep the cards by date and try to work on my videos in that order when I can. This way I can look at what is on the card but save clips later if I want to. I definitely don’t spend too much time at each camera bc of the heat here and Texas and bugs lol! But I do often put the card into my card reader to make sure the videos worked. Sometimes I save video clips at the site if there aren’t too many. The deer feeder cameras take a lot of video weekly and I have one bird feeder cam that will take 800-1500+ clips a day so I just put that on my phone when I am ready to edit in iMovie. Also some different types of AVI files will not export back to the camera roll from iMovie once I finish editing which has been a huge hassle for me. Again, I will give the app a try and also wonder if I could transfer videos to my laptop directly from the camera then save back to an SD card and put on my phone as this is something I have done in the past. But really in the end I prefer that the video is saved directly onto the micro SD card in a format that files are compatible so that I can plug it into my card reader and view video on my phone or laptop super quick as possible as I do with nearly all of my other cameras. I may write an update here if I use the app but it is doubtful that I would continue to use the camera for video very often if I have to use an app all the time. I would love to be able to show some video though but think others may have similar issues. Also the photos save via the card reader no problem and I really like them so there is a possibility of this camera being used mainly for photos. Thank you so much for your question and your comments on this. I really appreciate it. I just put out 4 cameras today but not this one bc of the video issue. Maybe I will try it as a backyard cam.
