THE GIRL I KNEW SOMEWHERE--THE MONKEES (NEW ENHANCED VERSION) 720p

  • The computer must have had a virus/malware and it destroyed my final
    mix so I had to take 2 earlier mixes and splice them together to save the project. I'm satisfied with the mix for the TH-cam video. This was a tricky song to work on with the 12 string acoustic and percussion. I especially like the middle harpsichord part with the 12 string filling in on that channel. I didn't want to try and play any of that
    on the keyboard either. A little extra vocal tracking to make it more interesting. Hope you Monkee fans like.

    Grew up with the Monkees, was 6 when their show started and begged my parents to buy me a set of drums so I could pound along with Mickey on "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone". Got their first two albums as presents and bought some 45's as well. Just found out Mike Nesmith died, now Mickey stands alone. Didn't know Mike wrote this song and Mary Mary. They were part of my young youth. RIP.

    My favorite Monkees tune. First, because it's musically delicious and lends me that pure '60s pop experience, 2:32 of pure joy; and second, because of what it represents - one of the earliest times the band played their own instruments in the studio, after having won that right from their ex music overlord Don Kirshner.

      The only singing drummer better than Micky was Karen Carpenter.....everyone knows what a magnificent voice she had, but according to Hal Blaine, the legendary drummer who played on 40 #1 songs, and 150 top 10 songs, Karen was a really good drummer as well. • @cinematic35
      @cinematic35  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some people ask me "What did I do different" in the enhanced version and I tell them just listen to the original and compare. The left channel was kind of empty so I used a 12 string acoustic to fill it in. With a harpsichord lead in the middle on the right I played my 12 string on the left which gives the song that full sound needed. Kenn

    The harpsichord solo was nicely tuned down. I always thought it was obnoxious in the original stereo recording, like it was to high in recording volume. Overall I heard voices that I could never hear before. Nicely done.

  • @CalumCarlyle

    Really difficult to decide which version I prefer tbh. The work you have done here is very apparent and there is loads to love. It makes the original stereo pale in comparison, and yet there are bits you can hear in the original that I do miss in this, also the original one mix is notably better than the original stereo, but again it obviously doesn't have the sparkly widened of your remix.
    I have a lot of sympathy for you losing your real mix, though, that is a total pain in the nads. (And that's the edit at 1:24 I presume? I wasn't listening for it but it is audible)

    I remember asking you about doing this song months ago, and I'm thrilled to see you did. I loved the extra vocals, but the only complaint I have is the part where Michael's vocals are muted quite a bit from the original. You know I'm no music guru, so don't think I'm criticizing, it's just that Mike's voice in this recording sounds so fantastic, and now I can hardly hear it.

    • @cinematic35
      @cinematic35  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Randi Holbrook In the description above I had mentioned that the computer
      had destroyed the final remix. I had no backtrack sessions I could salvage . I was up till 4:00 in the morning trying to find a way to save or access the final remix but it was destroyed. That meant I'd have to redo the entire recording of 8 hours and I was beat by then. I did the next best thing by combining the last 2 wave files that were good and splice them together. That is why Mike's voice is distorted. My computer needs to be restored before I do any more tracking or I'll have more problems like that! You have a good ear for music
      Randi and a good critic of my hard work!

    • @randiholbrook5849
      @randiholbrook5849 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand what you're saying now, Kenn. Some day when your computer is restored, I', sure you'll get Mike's voice right. I truly love how it sounds except for that one thing, and your many hours of work on it shows!

    One of my all-time favorite Monkees songs. They had excellent songwriters and Michael Nesmith was a great songwriter too. I don't think he got enough credit for the songs he wrote during this time period. I would have liked to have been a fly on a wall to have heard the struggles between Mike N. and Don K. Individually there were some great musical talent that was swept under the rug at first because the shows producers really just wanted them to be actors first and musicians second. But I think as the time went own the men understood better what their purpose was and help create good comedy. Peter by spades had been involved in the folk music scene in New York. I think he had to have had the chops to be friends with Stephen Stills. Davy was a natural drummer. Mickey was a classical trained guitarist and Michael was an adequate guitarist.
    I know to a certain degree the guys wanted to be more involved on the production side once their first two albums started selling. But I don't know if the guys really understood the great musical talent of the session men and women that played on those first two albums. Holy -Molly.
    These great session musicians had been playing on hundreds if not thousands of sessions for everybody in the great LA music scene for years. I am glad that the various Musical Halls have finally recognized the "Wrecking Crew" as there contribution to Hollywood and the music scene of that era.
