    Each time this game gets a DLC you can hear EA crying in the distance.

      @FatUberUddersOfChaos Well, that's pretty much what SimCity BuildIt is.
      I haven't liked every DLC for Cities Skylines, but at least they give you original content rather than just unlocking stuff that's already on your drive.

    To be honest, I really like that the expansions aren’t “necessary.” It’s nice that instead of game companies selling half-finished games and then having to buy the DLC to complete it, you have the option to get what pack you would be interested in while passing on one you’re not interested in :)

    • @Zukhov1945
      @Zukhov1945 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      You're only partially correct. Parks and better farming would be necessary to me. The Mass Transit thing and some of Snow Fall are absolutely necessary stuff to me. Even Disaster and After Dark have totally essential elements. Thanks god they have provided free patches, otherwise the game, like it would be at launch, would be okay but only because of the low price.

      And today, lots of the DLC packs are on sale. Probably like 50 to 75, much more then what's Frontier is doing with Planet Coaster. Still, I love Planet Coaster. City Skylines can give me a break from carefully detailed parks.

    What I really want is a dystopian cites expansion.
    Reeducation facilities that greatly decreases crime and happiness at the same time.
    mega scysrapers like the ones we saw in Sim City, A New Riot feature, Robocops, Genetic Research facility that kidnaps People from the street, etc.

    Not having grass in a rainy climate is horrible for the environment as the top soil washes away. Plants keep the soil from eroding.

    • @philipk4475
      @philipk4475 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      It depends entirely on the drainage of whatever you have instead of grass. A gravel or sand bed, for instance, will behave much differently than just dirt

      From my understanding grass may not be ideal for a house because it’s not native to the biome. I was thinking the lack of green here could be some sort of xeriscape idea where you use native bushes and things like that in gravel in place of grass in order to decrease runoff which will allow the ground water supply to increase and decrease chemical runoff into bodies of water.

    • @keiyakins
      @keiyakins 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Not having plants, you mean. There's always a native plant that filled that niche

    • @brandonstafford4054

      @The After Dance Party having lived in the northeast for my entire life and in the same house I can tell you that we have never once used any type of chemicals on our lawn and don't have sprinklers and our yard is completely grass covered. I don't see where these argument about lawn chemicals and water use to maintain a lawn come from, at least in this region.

      Yes, he created a device able to reorganize the flow of protons and neutrons in a counter rotating vortex, basically allowing nature to incorporate the fourth dimensional aspects of the zero point energy field. Zero point energy is just energy in the space around us. the energy in atoms. He wanted every person to have the ability to be self sufficient free of cost, but J.P. Morgan thought it was un american to not charge people continuously for a power source, so of course they ceased all his papers and threatened his life.

    Yeah, having no greenery in the yard isn't very eco-friendly. There are plenty of plants that grow naturally and you can make raised beds and garden in the front yard. Make use of the space!

    • @AceCrasher24
      @AceCrasher24 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NerdyChat Eco friendly isn't about having life, it's about protecting it. Having grass isn't the best idea since homes do restrict its resources that it would get in the "wild" but not too badly. Plus maintenance and such isn't eco friendly. Yet I don't see why it could hurt to have a garden.

    • @midnightfox653
      @midnightfox653 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      There are plenty of local plant life that you can grow in your yard. My friend is working on an herbal garden in her front yard. All plants that are native and can thrive in the environment you live in. Even in desert areas like where I grew up you can have cacti and whatnot as greenery. There is no reason for a city not to have natural yards while being eco-friendly. Like this game having brown yards is not necessary. I was expecting more vertical gardens in a expansion like this.

      Having plenty of areas of soil with grass (in climates that aren't so hot and dry that you have to water it) is actually really beneficial. It reduces flooding of the streets during heavy rains and cools the area down during hot days.

    Another great video about a subject I have little interest in, but I still can't stop myself from watching every upload! I loved what you said at the end, hence the comment. Keep doing what you're doing, it's always great to see another TH-camr just making videos about things that they have real interest in, however varied they may be, opposed to making ones that they feel will simply rein in the most views. It just makes every video a pleasure to watch. Cheers pal!

      @yourmum997 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Ana Sevi Agreed, though I think Cities Skylines does a few things better than any SimCity such as districts, the way zoning is handled and details like customising citizen and building names. But SimCity 4 was insane, especially the fact that you could build multiple cities in a region, check employee stats and so many graphs haha. I hope EA steps up their game or, if not, the Cities Skyline's sequel adds some of the stuff we miss from SimCity 4.

      I see no return of Sim City. The Golden age of Maxis died when Will Wright left and now it's dispersed altogether the team doesn't even work for EA anymore and for good reason. EA is the number 1 company in the world you don't want to sell out to when you are an indie developer or a talented team. I know they aren't the only ones thanks to Activision a lot of franchises went downhill and Microsoft didn't do Rare any favours!

    • @ZanathKariashi
      @ZanathKariashi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Though i do prefer it.
      Imagine if EA, instead of making you rebuy the same dlc every sims game just evolved the game into the next one and all dlcs were fully forward compatible. if you liked Sims 2, you could just roll back to Sims 2. Or if you liked Sims 3 but not Sims 4. etc.
      But you only buy Seasons once. Only buy University once. etc. And the content merely evolves as the game does.
      That is what paradox's model does. And it's pretty great. Even the core engine has received improvements over the years to make it work more efficiently. Where as EA just broke their stuff and left it to burn and if you want it fixed you need modders to fix it. Not optional extra content or personal tastes stuff, but literally the game isn't functioning properly and they won't fix it mod support, that is only excusable for stuff like Troika Games who literally went out of business and couldn't continue to support and fix the titles.

      the biggest problem is that there is a very limiting limit on agents that makes big cities unplayable because factories can not deliver stuff to the stores and the factories can not get the materials from the farms, mines and so on. The game is broken at end game. There is no point in playing as you have to create new cities all the time.

      Swedish Procrastinator there should be a way to cap your city. You should be able to pick that you only want to have 70,000 citizens so then the game stops asking for more zoning and you can just improve what you have. A giant city turns into a mess.

    Hey LGR! Long time stalker, new subscriber. :-P Love your reviews on retro tech and games and just...the era of my nostalgic childhood. I spied that you're a Sim fan and a CSL fan, and wanted to suggest another game for you.
    Emergency! 2017 is what you would get if you combined SimCopter with an RTS. You take the role of a city supervisor, whose job it is to keep Berlin, Munich, or a third city which I cannot remember, safe from all manner of disasters, from burglars to fires to acute influenza outbreaks.
    You do this through controlling your fleet of emergency vehicles, everything from standard police and fire vehicles, to fire boats, mountain rescue trucks, and triage vans.
    There are two main game modes, a campaign that both serves to tutorialize the game and provide an episodic format, in which each mission is self-contained, and a free mode, where you're set loose in the city of your choice with every tool at your disposal, and your job is to keep it safe as long as you can.
    Given my love for games like SimCopter and Search And Rescue, this game was a natural must-have for me. I hope that you can get as much out of it as I have.
    As an addendum to this, actually...in terms of graphics, while Emergency 2017 is definitely the slicker game, Emergency 4 is actually regarded as the better game, gameplay wise, and has a much deeper mod community and even a plethora of American mods, which convert the game to NYC, LA, and Everytown, USA.

I have the base game but I've never gotten a city that far off the ground before quitting due to my general lack of city planning skills (get in the red within not too long of starting a city). The ability to create a city excites me a lot and reminds me fondly of trying to build the ideal castle as a kid in Stronghold. I guess I can wait for a sale to buy the expansions, but I really should play the base game again and see if I can make something work.
    Also I really wish this company did a Sims style game. I bet they could come up with a beefy base for the game and make some pretty substantial expansions, and all of it would be a relatively good price I bet.

    Maybe I'm just playing it wrong, but I find it very hard to enjoy Cities: Skylines for a few reasons:
    1. I have to demolish buildings by hand. This is extremely tedious.
    2. Deathcare. It seems like no matter what I do, building clog up with bodies that don't get retrieved and the whole thing become a abandoned and needs to be demolished.
    3. Population sizes. This one may seem stupid, but it matters to me on a deep level of enjoyment: Cities has stupidly low populations. I can have what looks like a bustling megalopolis, and it scores as just 10 to 20 thousand people. SimCity's scores felt more correct to the size of the city, and thus more satisfying.
    These things seriously hamper my enjoyment. What am I missing?

    • @laurencefraser
      @laurencefraser 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bricknose the deathcare one is simple: you're zoning too much new residential at a time, so all the people move in at once, live through the standard life cycle... And die basically at the same time. So zone a smaller amount, wait a bit, then zone the next bit and that issue goes away (assuming your traffic situation doesn't suck so the vehicles can actually get there.)
      On demolishing buildings... I can't remember the last time I needed to? They seem to take care of themselves since... Probably the disasters expansion/patch? The RCIO ones, at least. Assuming you mean after fires and such. Abandoned ones repopulate after a bit once you solve whatever caused them to be abandoned. Or if you dezone the area they vanish really quickly. I remember it being a bit of a pain in the release version though, yes.
      Not much to be said about the population numbers. They count the number of person-things (cims) in the city (and being simulated) rather than the number of hypothetical real world people said person-things might be assumed to represent, and, like many of the game's limits, are as low as they are because setting them higher results in unacceptable hardware demands if the thing is to remain playable. So, yeah, that one's a matter of taste and technical limitations.
      Hope that helps.

      Depends on how much invested in the game you are, I guess that base game provides good amounts of content already (plus mods) and each expansion comes with a patch of free stuff for non dlc users.
      It's not all that bad IMO.

    I should really play this game... I only have the base game, I'm waiting for a big sale before I really buy any of the xpacks. I spoke with the lead designer of this game recently. She's awesome. Basically she said that she refuses to compromise on simulation or design for the sake of sales or reaching wider audiences. It's a principled game. Like the unapologetically unique titles of the turn of the millenium golden age of PC gaming. People making products they themselves want to use and therefore want to be the best they can be.

    They should make it so that the player has to make personal course-altering decisions in the game. For example, the twitter thing will indicate that there is a war or famine going on in a nearby country, and the city can either accept or decline the refugees. And also, the city would need to find a place for these people if they do accept. Scenarios like this that really add complexity to the game.
