Which reminds me... I wonder how he expected anyone to post scores to Metacritic if everyone who played SAO is still trapped in the game, including any reviewers? I can only assume Schmitt and other game critics haven't had much access to any internet web browers while stuck in SAO.

Well, given that there is at least an intra-game file sharing server as given via his famous humanity clip, as well as the mention of people livestreaming the game in prior episodes, it isn't impossible to believe that Kayaba put some browser integration into his full-dive VR MMO that would almost certainly require at least a fan wiki just for some of the quests (looking at you Pina). Besides, he could've put it in as an appeasement towards people stuck in there 24/7 with no way out. He already quadrupled down; whats one more layer, really?
The fact he figured it out from some throwaway line makes this 10x better

I watched a video once talking about a man who, with the aid of a medical staff to ensure no long-lasting effects, attempted to stay awake for... I think it was 72 hrs. He was barely functional. Really, the fact that Kayaba managed to get anything done at all with only micro-naps is impressive enough.

Honestly..I want to a live a alternate existence where this character survives and somehow joins their dysfunctional team and they pump episodes out like candy..
One detail I noticed that I don’t know is intentional or not (but more than likely is) is that, aside from Kirito complaining about the boss, Schmitt brings up the most detailed complaints with the game and he’s been established to be a game reviewer. Just thought it was neat.

It is wild that they gave Kayaba a better justification for doing SAO than the series ever gave us.
Yeah. The original SAO thing was deeply unsatisfying.
If I had written that story, I would have made it slightly different. Like, that dying in the game didn't actually kill you, but removing the Nervegear without logging out will place you into a coma.
The story would unfold the same, since both the characters and the audience still initially think that death in game = death in realworld, but the creator would be less of a screwed up character - instead of willfully killing thousands, instead it would be someone unhinged that wanted people to 'role play realistically' as if they were truly transported into a new world and had to survive. You know, capturing that kind of magic, which would in his opinion be impossible if players could simply log out. And if they knew dying in game would log them out, they would suicide in droves ....
That would also give him a bit of plausible denyiablity. He 'never intended' for it, it 'was a bug', he 'didn't know' what would happen if they died ingame, etc.
@@nordos idk about the coma bit, because people outside the game tried to remove the helmets too, so if they only pit you in a coma, they'd probably have gotten everyone out via coma and just worked to study them and find a way to wake them up. But I do get what you mean.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind him being a total psychopath trying to kill thousands if there was just a reason for it. You could even use the same logic of wanting them to roleplay realistically, it'd work even better if they still died since there's nothing more realistic than true death. But the fact that he didn't even know was too bad. You can have a villain be cruel and evil, but you've gotta at least tell us what he wanted and why.
@@jw-py9nwIf I recall correctly the him not remembering line was followed by a summary of "I have a god complex" basically, but I do think it's somewhat less satisfying than "there was a bug, I panicked, and everything, and I mean *everything,* spiraled out of my control from there because by the time I learned it existed I was too delirious for rational thought."
I can’t believe the real SAO missed the cheat code for hype moments in anime. Putting the title theme into the final fight is *easily* one of the hypest things you can do.
Well, maybe they will do it in the series finale/around-second-to-last episode...
Assuming they don't pull a Kayaba and have it go for so long that they don't remember what the song was anymore...

It really did. You can really tell from the first episode that it was just meant to be a parody like all the other abridged series, but it quickly turned into a remastering of the series. They fixed a ton of the problems with the original SAO and flat out made all of the characters far more interesting and entertaining to watch across the board.

its pisses me off that it took six years to notice the reference about the tutorial bot going missing is because of sachi's guild back in the starting episodes because the one guy never finished the quest which in turn led to so many deaths and ultimately this entire situation in the abridged series. holy shit that makes WAY to much sense and is one hell of a come back.

God, I just realized. every other time Kirito tries to do some big, dramatic reveal, he gets cut off, or someone else does it, or something like that happens. however, we're shown kayaba and Kirito relate to each other, they're two sides of the same coin, and this, up against Kayaba, is the only time that Kirito manages to get his big reveal out, because kayaba respects him enough to let him.

This episode alone explains how much better it is than the original show. Even with Kayaba explaining that he TRULY didnt do anything, but rather made it look like he did. It's the absolute best explanation he could come up with while also being dumb as hell about it. "Theres a glitch that makes your head explode whenever your avatar dies." It makes a lot more sense than "I dont fucking remember"
I'm not sure we can really blame Kayaba for his mistakes, at least at the beginning. 2 weeks without sleep would genuinely kill most people. Hell, it only takes like 3 days to start having hallucinations. If he was up for 3 weeks, his brain was barely functioning
I like how Klein is not only a character, but is important, not a whole lot, but his words have made a difference in the story
He's got more impact than in the main series, which isn't saying much. But for Klein? It's the little victories that matter.

I found this gem by watching the TH-cam shorts and I don’t regret watching the whole thing in one sitting at all. That is a masterpiece and I can’t believe it’s 10 years old. SAO was one of the first animes I ever watched so it holds a special place in my heart but it definitely has its issues. This version is 100x better! Thank you 😊

It really is, a better ending since it show's how one bad day, or in Kayaba's case, THREE WEEKS, probably more, lead him towards what would probably be the BIGGEST and SLIPPERIEST slopes ever, stupefying historians decades to come, and baffling all of mankind when the truth somehow comes to light
God I laughed like hell when he told them the truth behind the death game, I laughed so hard I was crying...
It's ok, SWE did even better, they fixed the whole incest subplot and managed to make a heartbreaking and emotional in it's stead.

Even 6 years afterwards, the needle drop in the fight, all the callbacks and the actual reasoning of Kayaba is still PEAK writing and editing, I dare say this may be my favourite series of all time, also hats off to all the writers and performers involved for helping put together such actualized characters

Well to be fair, the author made a one-shot book at the beggining that have just the s1st episode and the last 2. People thought it was good and make him expand it. That's why it felt anticlimactic. a beggining and end in just 1 book
