Black Hornet Ser Razor has been filling my freezer since they first came out. I can't say enough good things about Magnus. Best customer service out there.
The black hornet is my favorite broadhead because of you, you inspired me and many others to switch to fixed broadheads and I ingest all your wonderful information. Just 2 years ago I harvested my first archery deer and I got 3” of penetration with a 2” expandable broadhead and let’s just say that was the last expandable I ever looked at. I’m extremely happy with my new “Adult Arrow” setup and the bow shoots with me 1000% better. Thank you for everything you do!
Were you using a hunting weight arrow or target weight arrow?
Nothing against Troy he knows what he is talking about and is doing all the tests. But most people are not using hunting weight arrows and today’s mechanicals are really good now. But you need them on a hunting arrow not a target arrow.
I have not seen a properly tuned properly weighted with a good 150 plus grain mechanical not passthrough an animal ever.
On poorly tuned arrows or under weight yeah 💯, 3” if you are lucky they usually bounce off.
But that’s what happens when you use target arrows.
@@chrisruzsa2798at the time I was using a Easton 6.5 bowhunter arrow with a 100 grain point. 58lbs 27.5 draw Mathews Reezen 6.5 bow.
@@kylepawelczyk163 never use a 100 head ever even 100 grain field tips snap in targets sometimes. 150 minimum. 500 grain TAW minimum for hunting. Especially with mechanical. Use a calculator figure out your momentum if using mechanical you need around 0.6-0.8 slugs of momentum.
Fixed 0.4-0.5 you don’t need as much to get them to go through. Make sure everything is tuned and flying right too.
Many use mechanical to hide a problem and that’s why they fail 90 percent of the time. It truly is user error and false marketing because speed sells and more speed means less momentum. I personally like my setups to balance. Good fps with good ke and very decent momentum is what I find works for me.
Too fast too high ke and to low momentum is inefficient.
Just as too slow speed too low a ke and too high momentum.
Just my 2 cents.
The Black Hornets are indeed deadly, but I will say this: the Stingers whether Buzzcut or smooth always give me more penetration than the Hornets. Both are right out of the pack so sharpness isn't the difference. Both are extremely sharp out of the pack. I chalk it up to the blade angle being steeper on the Hornet than on the Stinger. Both kill hogs and deer for me and *always* give an exit wound. The arrows with Stingers usually exit the animal and bury in the ground. Blood trails as beat to death are unpredictable no matter the head. The Hornets may leave a bit of arrow sticking in the animal. Magnus is MY broadhead of choice for quality products and great customer service thats seldom needed.
As Ed mentioned, mechanical advantage is a real thing. A longer, smaller cutting diameter broadhead will always out penetrate a shorter, wider cutting diameter broadhead. All else being equal.
Imagine it like this. If you were cutting a steak, would it use less force to set a sharp knife at an angle and slice through the steak, or would it use less force to chop straight through with the blade set flat against the steak?
Same concept, the "flatter" the blade is the more it "chops" through. The less angle, the more it slices through.
The Black Hornet Ser Razor is simply a masterpiece of a broadhead. It is a killer through and through! Pun intended

I've been waiting for a steel ferrule version of the Black Hornets!!!
As far as the serrazor vs. straight edge? I've seen better blood trails with the straight edge over the serrazor. BUT, I have yet to have a deer make it over 40 yards with the serrazor head. My typical tracking distance for the straight edge is probably between 40 and 60 yards.
I did have one doe make it 120ish yards with the straight edge. But that was an exception.
About 4 or 5 seasons ago, I was shooting a 300 spine Axis with factory components and 100gr head (because I ran out of time to get my brass inserts before season). I had a TAW of 430gr and a velocity in the mid 280s. Anyway, it was a 35 yard broadside shot at an unalert animal. Remember, she was absolutely broadside and I was shooting from about 25' up in a tree. The ol' gal jumped string so bad that my entry was behind the ribs, lower 1/3 of the body. My exit was just above the crease, barely missing the spine. So much for a fast arrow beating the reaction time of the deer😂
Even with a high exit and a mediocre shot, the doe was easily tracked due to the copious amount of hemorrhaging caused by the Black Hornet. I'm sure that the blades being properly sharpened and stropped had a lot to do with how well she blead.
On a side note, I'm sure the reasoning behind me getting better blood trails with the straight edge is simply due to the fact that I get them sharper than I do the serrazors. I can get the "main blade" of the serrazor extremely sharp, but I'm sure the bottom of the chisels aren't as sharp as I'd like for them to be.
@slimjimmy229 thanks for your input. I lke the smooth just for the sake of sharpening. I find myself getting lazy when it comes to serrated blades. Both are deadly!
These are my go too broad heads when I may loose them in the brush they kill extremely well for me

I love the idea of a steel ferrule but what I'd REALLY like is the same head in 150 to 200 grains but 1/4" wider. Love my Magnus heads. Switched from Thunderheads that I shot for 25 years. Another great video Ranch Fairy. Can't wait to see you shoot some critters with these heads.

Wished i had known these were coming out , just got another pack of 125"s . Because when shot my buck and arrow blew right thru it , ( I had that thing scary sharp ) it skipped off a log behind it and sent it down the hollow. Of course can't find it. That buck didn't know what happened. went about 12 yds stopped and looked back where he was standing. Like what the hell? Next thing started the wobble and fell over. No tracking job needed.
Also use mineral spirits. It's food grade and great for knives too
Steel is better than aluminum, Rust and all. Stronger is better every time. Thanks Fairy, you the Man!

Dr. Ashby knows about this one. Probabaly not totally excited about it, but he did comment several times in these comments.
What you just mentioned is about a rough or file-sharpened edge. Hornets have a polished, smoothed, stropped edge that happens to be a funny shape.
I dont use them, though.
Vaseline works good it kinda seals it from the air also from rusting

The orange can kroil is awesome. And it's not a bleed stopper. If you have any on your fingers and get nipped you keep bleeding a bit longer.

Do you/can you sharpen the bleeders on the work sharp? When I tried on the Stingers it was too small. Is that where the jig and sandpaper come in or is it best to just get replacement bleeders?
You suggested the 125 black hornet serrated years back when I got into archery. Man that first deer didn’t go 30yrds after a double lung. For the money they are amazing broadheads. Very cheap so if you destroy one it’s whatever. Tuff head are superior but man those black hornets are just great.
Love my black hornets 🐝. I do have a question on shooting left helical vanes with the Single bevel broadheads and maybe I just missed the answer. Is the bevel consistent with the left helical rotation, if not will that make a difference as far as momentum of the arrow when the rotation switches? Thanks Love the content!

What size freezer do i need for 1 Texas size Buck .
Great broad head! Ive shot a few bears with them. My only compliant is when they come in the package the tips seem to by dinged up. maybe it happens in the manufacturing process but I noticed it on your close up shots. The dings can be sharpened out. Im curious if anyone else noticed this?
Those are not dings, we put a tanto tip on the tops and by design we put flat edges on the sides of the tip. Thank you

When does the bass spawn hit in Texas? Pre-spawn is usually late April in Kentucky with main spawn in May or whenever water hits about 62-65 degrees. That bass looked like already fat with eggs.
WOW! Such a difference between spawns in our state! What part are you from? Down here on KY and Barkley Lakes, we're catching them on beds in mid-April usually. By late April, early May, we have our big spawn.
I know Cumberland tends to be later in the year, but I just assumed that was because of how deep it is and being so close to the mountain runoff. I had no idea that was "the norm"
Love them, but having to sharpen all of those edges is a pain. I prefer the 2 edges of the RF Tuffhead 200.

I am a scent dummy. I wear Scentlok heat to toe with a face mask and do all sorts of other stuff. Oil isn't an alarming odor to deer or pigs. Your armpits, shit in your beard, and your breath are though.

If a little Rem-oil is going to cause a scent issue, someone should tell the rifle hunters.
A little olive oil or vegetable oil works also and doesn’t have nearly as much chemical smell.
If you use olive oil there won’t be smell and it will prevent rust and mixes well with your meat! Lol

I call it an iterruption because in between the interruptions is sharp and flat. Not pointed. So it interrupts the flat. When you sharpen them, you're sharpening the exiting flat between interruptions.

Yes, all else being equal, a one-piece design will be stronger. That said, at what point is it "strong enough?"
I'm aware that the aluminum ferrule tends to bend slightly in the thin spot if it glances off a bone or something. But in all fairness, I've put a Black Hornet through the "T" of the scapula, through the spine, and through the off side scapula of a mature buck in full rut. The broadhead survived perfectly fine.
The way the main blade supports the ferrule greatly diminishes how much the aluminum ferrule can bend. Now make that ferrule steel, and I think we have an extremely durable head.
I look forward to John Lusk doing his testing with these heads. I know we don't shoot steel or cinder blocks, but that testing really shows the weak points of a design.

A little aluminum is fine as long as you don't shoot it into salt water and don't get your salty sweaty hand prints all over it. More concerned with how they fly.
