Banh Januk (glutinous rice balls in ginger syrup and coconut sauce)

  • This is another very popular Cambodian dessert. Glutinous rice balls are filled with mung bean and then cooked to perfection. You then add some ginger syrup and then top it all off with coconut sauce and toasted sesame seeds. YUM!

    Its original name is “Num kon trey” or “Num pong trey” for the small balls (fish egg cake). It is Cambodian traditional cake in the old days and popular now both in Cambodia and vietnam. Looks so yummy!!!!!

    can you just soften the mung beans in a pressure cooker if you don't have a rice cooker? or how long do you leave it in the steamer? until they are tender? or you can squish them between your fingers?

    When served is it eaten at room temp, cold or warm? Also, how are left overs? Does the rice cakes harden in the fridge?

    The pronunciation and the concept of the dessert is exactly the same as the Vietnamese's Che Xoi Nuoc! The coconut makes it look so good!! :(
