    JCM 800 is a one trick, yes a good trick but only one. Due to the SJ controls you can dial more tones with the gain input and lead master controls. I own the SJ mini head (renamed studio) and I also own a 100watt JCM 800 2210 I bought in the UK in 86. I play the SJ quite a bite more due to its better versatility.

  • @leeallen2301
    @leeallen2301 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The biggest difference between the amps will be the speaker cabs. The Jubilee cab is loaded with Celestion G12 (probably M25s, cos that's what's in my Jubilee combo) and the JCM has Celestion V-type speakers. The G12 greenbacks are more throaty and full in the low and mid-range, whereas the v-types are brighter and more focused on the high mids. A better test would have been to run both heads through the same cab to compare them.

    Jcm800 sounds better but only because Jubilee is not dialed in a right way. Jube has much more sensitive controls which actually do what they are supposed to do. Jcm800 controls have much narrower sweep and it's much easier to dial in. Jube is not for everyone, you need some time to make it sound good, but then you will be awarded with one of the best sounds Marshall ever made.

      Blaine Ludeman Jubilee is DEFINITELY darker. Ive had several of both amps over the years, various wattages, Marshalls and clones. in general I prefer the Jubilees because I can get the level of saturation without having to have the amp set really bright, the 800s can get pretty brash, especially the later version they made before going to the 900s.
      The really only drawback I find with the 2550 is the I have to use dedicated speaker cabs for them. Other Marshalls, Fender and Dumble clones I use/have used I could all run through the same cabinets. All the other amps sound equally good with Greenbacks or the Eminence EJ1250s I use, whereas the Jubilees I find that I have to run with Vintage 30s that have more treble (as opposed to the GB's flat EQ), or they can have trouble cutting through the mix. The other side of that however is that if you like using a multi-amp rig, they're perfect to combine with other amps for your overdrive tone. The darker nature, along with the deep saturation make them perfect for your foundation. So the Jubilee sits back in the mix, and you can run a Plexi/800/Tweed/etc over it to cut through the mix. When Bonamassa uses his multi amp rig for his more Rock shows, the Jubilee was the only amp he kept on all the time

    • @ronnierazor4302
      @ronnierazor4302 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the speakers that are used are a major part for that. The Jubilee has V30's and the 800 has Celestion V-Types in it. I've used V-types and V30's for recording and the V-Types are a lot darker sounding!

    • @marcustully5758
      @marcustully5758 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blaine Ludeman It may actually be, the sound quality on the tablet that I watched this video on isn't that great (no headphones, just small crap speaker the tab). What I can tell you with 100% confidence and zero reservation is that between the Silver Jubilee and the JCM800, the Jubilee is going to be noticably darker/warmer. This is regardless of whether you're playing a 20W/50/100, combo or separate head and cabinet. Even using Vintage 30's and similar r speakers that are designed with an increased treble response matched with the Jubilee, and Greenbacks that are neutral voiced with the JCM, you will find the Jubilee darker.
      like I said, it's the reason I the Jubilee, but I know other players that didn't bond with it for this reason. They liked it at home or studio, but found it difficult to cut through the mix playing gigs. Granted with a couple of these players, I know they didn't really match their gear up properly, and in one case used a darker, more low end focused speakers which just increased the issue.

    I have this Jubilee head and love it. Its a fiddly amp and you can get a wide range of tones out of it. It does clean and crunch and has higher gain than the JCM800. You can also dial back the volume of a 50s wired LP and get it to clean up. I can get all the tones I need from the distortion channel just by altering the volume and tone knob on my guitar (LP or Tele. That said, I am going to add a JCM800 as well. In my mind its a totally different beast and I have use for those tones as well. Running a small project studios and I could use both these flavors. These amps live in the same Marshall neighborhood, but definitely at different addresses. If I had to pick one amp.... at this point I would go Silver Jubilee because I can get all the tones I am looking for from clean to crunch to high gain lead out of one amp and with no OD or distortion pedals. I add a touch of reverb and/or delay and I have all the tones I need. Also - different speakers in the cabs produce some different tone as well. Jubilee has some kind of modified V30 that is a great speaker. The JCM800 has a V type. These are similar but do produce different tone.

      The key is to keep the presence and treble below 12:00 and the input gain around 13:00. Also, the bass can be cranked up to 3:00 without being flabby or muddy. Mids sound the best around 1:30. Master volume needs to be at least at 2:00.

      The original Jubilees were designed with the (then new) V30s in mind. They work best with those speakers, at least from my experience. And the fact is there’s probably not a lot of differences in circuits between both amps. That’s where I find it kind of sad for brands such Fender, Marshall, Orange and Vox to not come with an Amp that would include the different circuits you can select just like we can do on Black Widow.
    Bring me a 25 watts Studio Amp Head (we can switch down to 5 and 0.5 Watts) with all top 10 or 12 amp circuits (Fender Bassman ‘59, Fender Blackface ‘65 Twin, Vox AC15 EF86, AC30, Orange, Marshall JTM45, Superlead Plexi, JCM 800, SLO 100, Diezel VH4 ch3), and I’m good! Even if it would cost twice what the Marshall Studio goes for... you wouldn’t need to buy 10 of them to get all the tones.

    • @OtherTheDave
      @OtherTheDave 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil Smith www.synergyamps.com is sorta on that path. At the moment I think their non-module products are about 3x or 4x more expensive than they should be, _especially_ since they seem to think there’s a point to having a chassis that can only hold one module, but maybe they’ll figure out something.

    • @Spidouz
      @Spidouz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      OtherTheDave lol... sorry but no! Synergy is an old ‘80s concept that is completely outdated today!
      And they’re way overpriced in comparison to products such Black Widow MGP-1A or even Joyo Dual-Klonz.

    • @OtherTheDave
      @OtherTheDave 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil Smith Well I did say “sorta”, and I certainly agree on the overpriced part.
      Why it outdated? All they’re really doing is putting the preamp circuit on a different PCB than the power amp circuit, which, IMHO is a good idea anyway. It’ll make it easier for amp techs to isolate problems and replacement boards can be cheaper since each board will have fewer components.

    • @Spidouz
      @Spidouz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      OtherTheDave the whole concept is fully outdated, because having slot cards you have to remove and insert in chassis is a complete dumb idea today when we see the technologies we have now. When you know that between two amps, sometimes it’s only a couple of resistors and capacitors with different values that will change the tone and make a “different amp model” it’s fully outdated to have dedicated pcb for that. Also, with relays, it’s better to have system such Black Widow or Dual-Klonz that will include all necessary components and use relays to change the circuits to the appropriate topology to match the Amp model and therefore have a true recreation on the fly. No additional modules you have to remove and insert, just a press of a button to get it. And if the system is well designed (such the MGP FROM Black Widow), it will cover like 250+ Models, which is pretty much anything you need because all amps are nothing more than a recreation or variations of the major amps since the ‘50s. So you can cover all tones without the need of big fridge chassis to get all modules, you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars into more modules to find the right tones or spend all your time removing and inserting new modules. Now you can just press a button to change circuit topology and have the model you need... if it’s not the one you need, you press another button and you can try the next one. Or you can even have some recall on stage or studio, etc... all that in the size of a 2U rack or a single head amp... THAT is a modern take on the multi path multi circuits system... nothing like the outdated Synergy that was a good idea... back in the ‘80s when we didn’t knew any better. Today it’s just a crappy concept. The designers should start to look forward.

    On TH-cam the Jubilee sounds more fuzz like. The JCM sounds has more clarity. Get both and run at the same time.

    It is a shame in this vid that they did most of the comparison on the lead tone. The Jubilee has huge versitality. I love the rythem clip setting for example. Jubilee gets my vote.

    That jcm 800 it's just all up in your face gnarly awesome! The silver jubilee much warmer and smoother - too much imo. I might even take the Black Star in your other video over the silver jubilee. But none of them beat that jcm 800!
