Trans Athlete Controversy at High School Track Meet

  • Aayden Gallagher, a boy who identifies as a girl, finished second overall in the girls' 200m and 400m races at the Sherwood Need For Speed Invitational in Oregon. While the viral video only shows the heat stirring the most controversy, I provide extra context as a former track & field athlete to highlight why this is such a big deal.
Aayden's times would have finished 61st in the boys' 200m and 46th in the boys' 400m. I also discuss inherent biological differences between male and female track athletes. For example, the varsity boy who won this meet in the 200m had a time that was only two-tenths of a second behind Flo-Jo's world record 200m time.
To those who believe Aayden should be allowed to compete with the girls, please consider the following: Whose spot did he take from his own school in order to compete at this meet? Who missed the lifetime memory of a podium finish? It appears this will only end when female athletes refuse to compete, and their parents raise the issue with school administrators. It's terrible that this seems to be the only path forward, girls deserve an opportunity to compete on a fair playing field.

I was both at the Sherwood Need for Speed Classic 2 weeks ago as well as an event that went down yesterday called the Dean Nice invitational, and I saw him run each time. First, I’d like to say that Sherwood is a massive meet in our area, and at the time I was comparing it to a pre-state meet. I have zero doubt that every girl in his heat had worked incredibly hard to get to where they were, but that’s even more so at this later (smaller) meet, where he stole gold. Yesterday, he ran in the top heats for the 200, 400, and 4x400, and came 1st for the first two. Now not only is this again incredibly unfair to those athletes, of course, but it’s also unfair to the TEAMS. I don’t want to dox myself, but two wins is 20 points, and that’s a ton. That’s all I’ll add. He’s wreaking havoc, and I wish I could embarrass him in a race but he’s too cowardly to compete on the men’s level

Excellent analysis!! I currently coach the HS track/Cross Country team for a middling D3 school and this loser couldn't even make it on my Varsity squad for the boys, but he would be several seconds ahead of my best girl in the 400 and a full second ahead of her 200m time. This trend of letting biological males compete against the girls is downright criminal! I agree, everyone deserves to compete, but not at the expense of fairness. I still say the proper solution is to create a third category so we have boys, girls and other. It will be a long, uphill slog for the "other" category to gain relevance...just like what women have gone through over the past several decades to earn their own relevance. No free lunch and no short cuts!

They need to take this statistical proof and example you have given here to back them up. I mean really. High school boys have a time commensurate to Olympic women athletes. And yet, many feel this is okay. The trans can have a division of their own.

  • @timmcculty2320

Men are better in every athletics event than women except for 1 which is marathon swimming distances. Even that is biological due to women's body compo making them a bit less drag in the event which surpasses the male athletic advantage over those distances. I really hope this is corrected and remembered as a huge mistake, where the burden of proof should have been met before altering women's sports. It would be like if someone intentionally got bad grades in order to compete and win in the special Olympics, and the athletic advisors just allowed them to compete until it was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they and like 1000 other people that started doing the same thing all had an unfair advantage.

There's an athlete who I'm pretty sure is trans that goes to most of my meets. I'm not 100% sure, but she always does amazing and she just doesn't look 100% transitioned. Plus, I heard some girls from her team being confused about what pronouns to use. I'm definitely for trans people, I'm non-binary myself, but I do think there should be rules about this.
They should have to be on hormone therapy for a designated amount of time (note: many trans people already are), like, two or three years at minimum. The first thing I think is: what if they haven't gotten to that mark yet? (this could also be the reason Aayden wins girls races but would totally lose boys races, she might have started hormone therapy but not long ago). I've always thought for there to be a category for intersex people and transitioning transgender people. This could very well be possible in larger meets, but in my rural meets, she's like, one of two girls that do weirdly well and look weirdly non-female and that's just not possible. If there aren't enough people to make that category possible, they'd just have to compete with the boys. Maybe they could practice with the girls, maybe even run with the girls at co-ed meets (as long as their results are compared to the boys results).
This is one of the weirdest things in terms of trans acceptance in my opinion. It's the only one that's not completely obvious, and I don't think it's a black and white problem of do we make all trans people compete with those with the same biological sex no matter how transitioned they are or do we let all trans people no matter how transitioned they are choose whether to run with the boys or the girls. Nearly all regulations in place (that I know of) essentially are one of these sides. And one day, I hope there is a way to regulate this so that it is fair to both cisgender athletes and transgender athletes.

So far we have only had average athletes transition and even they end up among the winners competing as a girl. The problem as always seems to be that the categories used by sports federations just haven't been updated to conform with current understanding.
and you seem to be half the problem in this understanding by repeatedly saying "boy" in a "girls" race, things have actually moved on from this understanding and your lack of acceptance of this is ironically what hold you back from making any progress, refusal, anyone's refusal to accept this new categorization... IS the problem!
The problem isn't that there's a girl running in a girls race, or a woman running in a woman's race, or a man running in a mans race, the problem you're highlighting (but doing it very poorly) is that there aren't "cis" girl/women/boy/men categories in sport, and the current categories do not differentiate between a cis woman and a trans woman (example).
I don't think you even have the slightest clue what you should be advocating for... so achieving your goal... it's going to be impossible for you.

@@Sun_Legend120sounds cool, but wouldn't that still present an issue where trans females are competing with trans males and the natural biological differences create unfair advantages for the females? Even beyond that wouldn't there be massive incentive for a biological male to transition as minimally as possible in order to win events? It's much more complicated than just grouping people together is what i'm saying. We don't have regulations or a gauge to maintain the integrity of fair competition since we're playing with something we don't fully understand yet and produces wildly inconsistent results in different people. We'd need a standard for what a "full" transition is, and even then i'm sure there's questions to ask

@@zayywyd7832 exactly...the women can (and will) run faster, women have not been competing that long in the modern era…AND many countries/cultures/religions restrict or condemn woman for participating in sports. and come on now, you are telling me that the Kenyans, Ethiopians, Jamaicans and African Americans don't have a biological advantage, please look at any professional sports team and any Olympic podium, just a coincidence that it is dominated by these groups ? But look, the trans population is a tiny fraction of the total pop., less of the competitive sport pop., can we not find a way to accommodate this strange phenomenon with compassion for all? Give them an asterisk or their own division. I also wonder why no one seems to know how many trans athletes were in that field that day, no other trans or many? I can’t believe there are no slow trans athletes. And in this particular case nobody was really that fast and the trans person came in second overall.

The TRANS ATHLETES should be encouraged to compete in the SIDE EVENTS, such as the MIXED RELAYS, STEEPLECHASE, and "athlons" (triathlon, pentathlon, decathlon). (The Trans Athletes could seriously win all the SIDE EVENTS, and nobody would worry... LOL 😅) The Coaches need to take the initiative, and appropriately direct MIXED GENDER ATHLETES to MIXED GENDER EVENTS.
