    As an AuDHDer I love routines and cannot keep them to save my life. I LOVE the idea of the menu and am actually going to do this right now.

      Hayley Honeyman’s channel has a video talking about having an Ideal Routine, Most-Likely Routine, and Minimum Routine. I can’t remember the exact title for the video because she has several good ones on the topic of routines. I’m an ADHDer waiting for more testing, and her videos have been so helpful in getting my routines together for my own style of functioning😄
      Edit: Here is the title of the main video.
      “Routines for ADHD that ACTUALLY WORK!🌛☀️(Morning/Night routines)”
      There are several videos since that video came out that I found helpful for building on other parts of routines

    I feel like the perspective of “watching nature happen around you” is so underrated!! I had a yard sale last weekend and when it was slow, I watched robins pull worms out of the ground. It was genuinely fascinating, and even more so when I went to google and learned HOW they’re able to find worms so well. I love that I’ve seen more people online saying to get outside, but what really makes me feel connected to nature is learning about it and watching it happen!!

    Using a 'trash book' to collect sudden, disorganised ideas is a huge help! Getting the thought _out_ of your head and letting it go so that you don't have to worry about it interrupting the current task, and knowing exactly where you can go to sift through them all when you're done...💯💯💯 I keep a few different journals and going through my trash book to migrate that information into the correct journal is definitely a nice, low-impact activity at the end of the day.

  • @innerpeaceambientnoise1722

    Y'all PLEASE go outside, I think it's so easy to forget how beautiful clean air is. Access to clean air is a human right that sadly so many of us across the globe don't have.
    I'm from cancer alley, and the first time I travelled away from here, I learned what "fresh air" was (because that phrase never made sense to me). We literally get "air quality alerts" on our phones warning us to not go outside, and the summers are so intense that if I'm outside for more than 20 min at a time I get light-headed and dizzy.
    So not only is clean air access something worth fighting for, but like Shelby said, it's integral to being happy as humans! If you've got clean air, please go show it some love. It's my current goal to move away from here and go breathe in peace lol

    I'm so glad you posted this video today, and I had a feeling there might be an ADHD diagnosis reveal; something about the vibe at the beginning of the video. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year and have also been struggling with anxiety for my entire adult life (and apparently mild OCD, I recently learned), so welcome to the tribe of women who were left behind. I was on an antidepressant that was meant to help address the ADHD for about 6 months, but I came to realize that it had taken my anxiety and OCD behaviors to such astronomical levels that people were actively avoiding me at work, and I had no relationships outside of it. Being off it even for a week I feel like a completely different and much more content person. I am also getting ready to move into my first house (renting still, but a huge step up), and my mind is just on fire with these same considerations for productivity and general happiness (time outside, making things, utilizing sustainable conveniences that are available to me without shame). I love the goal of hosting monthly parties, and it's something I'm considering, too.

    i love delayed gratification! i figured out recently that i'm very reward driven, and if i want to play a game or do something for fun at home, then i can do something productive first and that way it feels even better when i have the reward since i removed the guilt of not having the productive thing done

  • @jessv4300
    @jessv4300 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

    I hadn’t realized it until you mentioned it here, but the benefits of delayed gratification are SO real. I got really into sewing when I had lots of free time my senior year of HS, which also happened to be when my ADHD symptoms seemed to appear less. I’m sure there were other factors at play too, but being excited to get back to sewing after school/work had me on my phone WAY less and I really did feel more mentally healthy.

    Why am I not surprised neither? A lot of TH-camrs I follow actually have adhd - although it’s not their content and in most cases I started to follow them before they knew themselves.
    As my son has ADHD and I see a lot of me in him I will (hopefully, it’s to much on my plate right now) seek a diagnosis. Was in a counseling about autism two years ago but since then I suspect it might be both, because I have the social stuff autistic people struggle with AND actually a quite classical childhood of someone with ADHD and high intelligence. As life gets stressful with two kids all my „systems“ broke down (like working in the middle of the night, having irregular work schedules, sports in the morning, evening doesn’t work…). I never get enough sleep. I forget appointments (something I never did in the past because I had time to just sit and think about it). I have paralysis at the desk because it’s simultaneously too complex and too much of the same. A connection of mine just came out as diagnosed with adhd and I plan to ask them where he got it…
    I also worked with habits for making sure I brush my teeth or something. Actually since having short hair I currently just very seldomly brush my hair because it isn’t a habit anymore.

  • @thatjillgirl
    @thatjillgirl 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I love the habit menu idea! I think most of us really struggle with maintaining a consistent routine. Things happen and you get thrown off your schedule, and then once you lose the momentum, it becomes hard to restart it. My work schedule is such that any of my healthy habits have to be somewhat flexible or else they're just not going to happen.

    I have a weird problem… I’ve decided I want to bike places more and so I got my old bike out of storage and I used to ride this thing all the time. Riding it now is so painful. My quads fill up with lactic acid and burn like no one’s business. I can barely go a mile on flat ground. My butt hurts so bad from the seat and I get back pain within 5 minutes of pedaling. I’ve been doing 1 mile 3 times a week for a month now and have seen no improvements. I don’t understand. I’m a very active person- I play soccer twice a week and I run 5ks regularly. What am I doing wrong?

      If you have a good quality bike shop near you, go in with your bike and ask if they can help you with adjustments and (possibly) a more comfortable seat. If it’s hurting you to ride, your bicycle is probably not adjusted correctly to your body.

    Hi Shelbi, I have been watching your channel for years now and I hope this doesn't come off in a bad way, but it is a genuine question I have. I grew up in the era of beauty/fashion/makeup TH-camrs, but I transitioned away from that and started engaging in content like yours, Sustainably Vegan, etc. While you do provide a lot of tips that I think anyone can incorporate, videos like this one seem a little out of touch for me (or maybe I'm too cynical). I work a 9-5, spend at least 1 hour commuting, in a very busy, very fast paced, very stressful city (hint: 🍎). "Slowing down" is a luxury and a privilege that many people in my position don't have. Work and sleep take up most of my time, and after all that, I am burned out. Instead of this comment simply being a complaint, I think I would love to see content from you (and Immy, and others) that addresses this. Firstly by acknowledging your privilege to make your own schedule, do your work outside of the "normal" business hours, not having to sit in an office for 7/8 hours, 5 days a week. This is what allows you to have the lifestyle you live. Whereas most people, after being in an office, commuting, etc. barely have time or mental capacity to just get unready, go to bed, and do it all over again the next day. I believe Madison still works a 9-5 and I know this is your channel and she has kind of stepped away from it, but maybe she could help you in creating content or providing input on how we are supposed to "slow down" and have time for healthy habits, have time for hobbies, etc. when you have to be committed to someone else's (a business or company) time for 7-8 hours a day. Where do you find the time and mental capacity for healthy habits, even just one or two? I am not saying you're the problem, because this is a larger problem with the corporate world/capitalism, but since you work for yourself and set your own schedule, etc. there is a huge privilege there that allows you to build your day and time and work around all the habits you want to achieve. I really think there has to be a conversation and acknowledgement of this. I hope this makes sense, I could probably write an essay on this.

    • @Shelbizleee
      @Shelbizleee  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      I just want you to know I also work a 9-5, my schedule has matched Madison’s for several years (prior to that I worked a 9-5 and a 6-2) to keep a sense of normalcy in my life. I’m no longer just a TH-cam, I do consulting & I run a non-profit and a women’s health brand. I’ve had to build systems for my life to function anywhere close to normal because my body & brain doesn’t work like many others. Being productive & slowing down isn’t easy for me. It’s the whole reason I made this video because I’ve been trying so hard for years to do so. All of these habits happen outside of work hours for me. I hope that helps.. I’m just sharing what has worked for me because I struggle a lot. And Madison will never be a good point of reference for me because despite working 9-5 she finds more time & mental capacity to do more than me most days because she has no mental or physical disabilities which is something I could only dream of saying. She keeps routines, she eats on a schedule always healthy, she works out 5x every week, she has a morning and night time routine. Those things don’t work for me and that really has nothing to do with my job, I struggle in my mental & physical health a lot. Despite all of this I know I hold a lot of privilege but to say I’m out of touch I fully disagree with.

      @louiseerbslisbjerg7854 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I dont agree at all.
      No one says you have to adopt everything, but just sorting the trash you'll produce, maybe keeping a composting bucket in your apartment and making a habit of using fabric cloth's to clean your face over paper or wipes is something you can do. This is one of many, many videoes where as a lot might be much more for you, than say, me.
      This may seem out of touch to you, but for quite a lot of people it does not, because they do manage their time differently.
      As a neuro divergrbmment and chronic pain patiebt I dont have a choice. Since divorce I've been s single parent and I cant do the 100 hour/week career, because it'll make me too sick; I cant function at all.
      So I live cheaply in a small town and adjusting my expences to match my income, creating coping-systems etc. has been a life saver. It works fine for me and this video is very much in touch for me, though others are not.

    As someone that works long hours, I sometimes find it difficult to get outside every day. But, I've kind of made a habit of going onto my terrace every day after work for at least 5-10 minutes because I have so many plants. Taking care of them brings me so much joy! Seeing all of the buggos and borbs come by and seeing what sorts of veggies my plants have produced for me really motivates me to get myself outside.
    Also, I read Tippy's treats as "Catnip and Chili" and my first thought was "oh, wow, that sounds like a cool combo!" but then, my second thought was "FOR A CAT?!" lol

    I use the Finch app to set goals! I get to take care of a little animated bird and there’s only incentives to complete goals, not punishments for not. I think it’s a great way to do the habit menu because I know I don’t complete everything every day but it keeps me consistent

      This is so cute! I have a Forest app where you set your own timer and if you complete the timer you get a tree but if you get distracted or cancel the timer your tree dies, and it creates a Forest for you. I was just thinking I wanted to get an app that does what Finch does!

    I started doing autoships about 6 months ago, and it was a game changer.
    I was also doing meal shipments a few times a week but it's on break because it's bbq season in Canada and that requires much less mental energy for me - don't ask me why.
    I no longer have to run around, no longer have to expend energy thinking about items, AND i know what to budget for these things.
    Auto ship saves me time, mental energy, and money, it's a no brainer for my needs.

  • @kalliemj
    @kalliemj 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Auto ship is so important for my cats medications. One or her medications lasts a month and takes up to two weeks to compound and her other medications come from two different sources and can take a week to compound and ship. And because none of them were prescribed at the same time or for the same amount of time it is really hard to keep track. Most of these aren’t available locally because they are specially designed for animals so apart from her insulin everything is online.

    As always perfect timing Shelby! I’m currently in between jobs and am spending most of my time on my phone lately (since I don’t have my routine of going to work anymore) so creating new habits, bedtimes, setting intentions, etc. is a great reminder that just because I don’t have a schedule anymore doesn’t mean I should quit being thoughtful about my time 💕

    I don't have ADHD, but I have benefitted from the combining positive rutine with something that needs to be done, but I don't enjoy. Making tea is my happy morning routine. It is mindfulness thing also. How am I feeling? What tea would be perfect for my mood? While I'm waiting water to be heated (and tea to become ready), I clean-up sone of the kitchen. This also helps with getting some household win under my belt already in the morning, making me feel better about myself.
