"G" or Comfort Shackle install + TEST - shown on a Mitsubishi L200

  • Empty pick-ups have a bouncy ride, some might say harsh !
So we were kindly recommended to look at G shackles or some call them comfort shackles.
They suggest that these offer a much smoother ride on or off road as the shackles allow free movement of the axle in a vertical manner and therefore providing a more cushioned comfortable ride.
The shackles are made from heavy duty steel with 3 points of articulation as opposed to 2 points for normal shackles.
Ours came from Aliexpress - there are a multitude to offerings ( and ebay etc) they are vehicle specific, so watch out - but the main issue we found is price - the same photo is everywhere but prices differ wildly for what looks the same thing - so be careful who you buy from.
Simple job, can be done on the driveway with basic tools.
We love off road - so join our adventures as we prepare our vehicles in the workshop and drive the tracks here in the stunning Algarve region of Portugal.

These shackles have been around for literally ever. They go by different names. But generally do the same thing. Their main purpose is to give an extended suspension travel. Without a shock with additional extended travel and possibly extended brake lines, you will not be able to take advantage of their articulation advantage feature. The down side to this design is a possible loss of some size to side stability.
The first time I saw one of these shackles was on an early flat fender Jeep from the forties or 50’s. The first time I remember seeing one of these shackles was in the early to mid 1970’s in an off road Jeep magazine.
Ford offered a version of this shackle on its 1968 through 1972 F-100 and F-250 trucks. Its purpose was to supply a smooth ride when the truck was unloaded and stiffen up the spring when a load was added. And it really worked. My dad had a 1969 F-100 with that suspension and the truck had a very good ride when it was unloaded, but when you added a trailer or load in the bed, the suspension firmed up nicely to carry the load. And maintain good handling.

Yall should look at the Terraflex revolver shakckles same concept but they give you more down travel without affecting ride height.

At first look there is less travel/rotation in rubber joints = less wear of them.
And now there is a potential risk to have short part of the shackle upside down in some conditions where full extension of suspension happens.

LOL- Same thingy / different name. Years ago it was called the "Z shackle" and the more common known product is....." The Missing Link." This design in concept is known to have breakage issues from twisting forces applied to all attachment points . This issue was reduced with the more modern design of today's "revolver shackle "(part that swings/pivots down also swivels a bit)... It has its own issues too though

The Z shackle was very different, at least the one's I've experienced. It actually twisted & lengthened as articulation increased. But yes, more or less the same shackle over the years. Sulastic Shackles are still the best IMO but, at quite the increase in cost.

Great video! i've seen these things before online and was thinking of putting them on my navara d22 as they have the same suspension configuration(torsion front and leaf at the back). Since you're familiar with the jolt of the back susp. when unloaded, have you noticed it disappear with the g shackle? Also does it extend the travel by much? in theory it does bit, my concern is, will it cause any problems with stock suspension dampers. my guess is, the dampers will only restrict downward movement of the wheel as they top out, right? assuming they don't have enough travel at stock height. what are your thoughts about this. Cheers.

Regular shackles constrain the leaf spring end point to a very narrow range dictated by the shackle mounting point arc. The g-shackle gives the leaf spring end point a lot more range. I would be curious to see a similar run with a longer simple shackle, maybe something in the 4” lift range. I bet your shock meter would see a similar decrease in numbers.

Ha ha - I was literally trying to find our last comment to tell you it was done - you have saved me a load of time :) - we like them - for me (the old one) they smooth the hard jolt over speed humps and alike - Nath says on the limit (him pushing way too hard downhill on a super twisty road) they make it looser on the back and the truck leans more - so I thought when he said that, they would be off, but no, he likes the new stance, likes the better ride - we will see, but it does look like we might need longer dampers to allow for more flex off road, we will try and bust what we have first - so thanks for the tip off - and sorry we have taken so long - we are shit at this 🤣

@@DrivenMadShow well I don't know about u ; but the moment I installed them & give them a try ; I find it totally different than the old ones , so I decided to recommend it to you immediately , I owned my L200 for like 7 years ; the days with the G-shackles were the best days & I hoped I got them earlier! .
The loose-ness on the back because after u installed the G-s ; the back got lifted like an inch (as Morduc said) you need also to lift the front also an inch to make the wait evenly on front & the back.
U didn't reply to me about the snorkel subject😁 , if the G-shackles was the first best modification I did to my L200 ; the snorkel was the second , because the engine is turbo ; the snorkel support it with a cold , compressed & clean air .
So I hope you consider this project & u will not regret it I promise👌😉.
On another hand , since u had an L200 ; I love to invite you to join this group on facebook : L200 Owners .

    • @DrivenMadShow

In my excitement I forgot the Portuguese laws 😭 - here you have to carry the vehicle documents in the car at all times - these have the legalisation of the vehicle on them - so tyre size for example, you can only fit what is on there.
You can replace parts (hence why we have risked the G's) but very much like for like.
Any discrepancy on the document and it is big boy fines, on the spot by a man with a big gun, they drive you to the cash-point - literally, they do !
They also have teams of police on the main roundabouts, once or twice a week, pulling random vehicles in and checking - most of the time it's vans, if they do not have their paperwork 100% - so an Amazon driver has to update his paperwork after every drop, or its a fine ! they count the packages 🤯 at the roadside.
My JEEP (previous owner did it) has suspension / snorkel / winch etc modifications done - this requires full technical drawings: and the tough bit, you have to prove the item you want fitted has a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer for the car you are fitting it to - in addition, if say, you wanted to fit big wheels and no one before you has ever fitted that size to that vehicle, no chance - hence why very few cars newer than 2000 are modified, you just cannot get it past !
That also accounts for why old cars here are so expensive.
Our ML - Nath wanted to tint the rear window, yes you can (because they came from the factory like it) - the film has a CofC for Mercedes - winner !! .... but you have to get it done, then take it to a test centre to get it approved and they remove 800.00 euros from you for giving the approval (that's if they do approve) - if they do not approve, you have to remove it ! (to put that in perspective, the average monthly wage in Portugal is 900 euros !)
So the snorkel might be off the table - we are seeing a chap next week to get some new tyres, really nice chap, so we are going to quiz him over legalising as he is in the trade - see if there is a back door option for trade here - doubt it !)

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thats a very good question - we sort of just ignore it - we do not often load it up, that said Nath build wood drawers, had a rear canopy thing and turned it into a camper - that lasted one camp trip and then the wood hit the skip and the canopy was sold 🤣 must have taken the 0-60 to 60 seconds ! he hated camp sites - I am daily driving it, as my car is being a right &/()=% - I am still surprised how well it drives and takes a twisty hill road from home to mancave - I glanced at the leaf yesterday as had some rust showing, still nice and bent 🫣 but will look again later KR J&N

I'll fit those myself. Got a couple of 3 tonne Jack's, plus more than enough jack stands, so I'll go for it & photograph when I do it & send them to u.
    Two questions.....
Do I need to av tracking/suspension checked after fitting as height of vehicle/suspension has lifted, albeit by only 1"-2"?
Have you got/do I need EXTENDED length shocks on the rear or standard length which are already on my stock L200?
Anyway looking forward to fitting them when I receive them.
As I said, I've found the set of 2 over ere in Blighty from a 4x4 company for £75. Same brand as the one's you've fitted in this video.
Stay lucky. Stay safe. Stay healthy.
    Emails sent to you Jon.

Get red ones 🤣 - tracking not affected for us - but probably a good idea, Murdock is going in for a new set of boots next week, so we are getting it done then.
No need to change the shocks to creep up onto that tyre support 😂 🤣
      Looking forward to seeing them

Hi Richard - we purchased from Aliexpress - the exact link to the ones we have is now dead - this is the store I used ... www.aliexpress.com/store/335858?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.6.2b7f29f6iyPFnT (HANSSENTUNE Racing Store) they still look identical but are now a lot cheaper with just a quick look (memory says 140 ish + I paid for a pair) so hope you get a great deal ... @DrivenMad my shackle keeps hanging up and I think these might fix that as well, no idea why it does that , but instead of swinging the shackle backwards the shackle moves forward up against the frame and gets stuck there, have to use a crowbar to get it back down again.

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  ปีที่แล้ว

Ours have been perfect ( well greased when fitted ) there is a but, couple of comments that there’s have been poor, but I think there are differences in quality, like you say, very difficult buying from the likes of AliExpress, we would not use them if we could get elsewhere, would happily pay more for EU made, but the world is a strange old place 😣

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, suspect they would solve the hanging problem - my only negative is if you really push on, the front dives a tiny bit more than it did, could be my imagination mind 😂 not that we really push that hard often

      Men, men -- please !!
      We are not men,
But hey, once I was a boogie singer
      Playin' in a rock-and-roll band
      I never had no problems
      Burnin' down Nick's one-night stands
      And everything around me
Got to start to feelin' so low
      And I decided quickly
      Yes, I did
To disco down and check out the show
Yeah they were dancin' and singin'
      And movin' to the groovin'
And just when it hit me
      Somebody turned around and shouted
"Play that funky music, white boy
      Play that funky music right
Play that funky music, white boy
      Lay down that boogie
And play that funky music 'til you die."
      'Til you die?
      I tried to understand this
I thought that they were out of their minds
How could I be so foolish
To not see I was the one behind
So still I kept on fighting
Well, losing every step by the way
      ... we can do
I said, I must go back there
      I got to go back
And check to see if things still the same
When they were dancin' and singin'
      And movin' to the groovin'
And just when it hit me
      Somebody turned around and shouted
"Play that funky music, white boy
      Play that funky music right
Play that funky music, white boy
      Lay down that boogie
And play that funky music 'til you die."
      'Til you die?
      Oh, 'til you die
Gonna play some electrified funky music
      Hey, wait a minute
      Now first it wasn't easy
      Changing rock-and-rolling minds
      And things were gettin' shaky
I thought I'd have to leave it behind
Oh, but now it's so much better (it's so much better)
I'm funking out in every way
But I'll never lose that feelin' (you know, I won't)
Of how I learned my lesson that day
When they were dancin' and singin'
      And movin' to the groovin'
And just when it hit me
      Somebody turned around and shouted
"Play that funky music, white boy
      Play that funky music right
Play that funky music, white boy
      Lay down that boogie
And play that funky music 'til you die."
      'Til you die?
      Oh, 'til you die
      They shouted
      "Play that funky music
      Play that funky music
      Play that funky music
You got to keep on playin' funky music
      Play that funky music
      Play that funky music
      Play that funky music
Gonna take you high and low."
"Play that funky music, white boy
      Play that funky music right
Play that funky music, white boy
      Play that funky music right
Play that funky music, white boy
