New car collection and first drive!
Lets off road :). we buy a budget friendly off roader to test to the limit
Join us as we collect it and give it the first taste of dust in our ownership.
How will it stack up against our Mitsubishi L200's ?
Exciting times ahead
At Drivenmad, we repair, maintain and upgrade vehicles in our workshop, here in the sunny Algarve, Portugal.
Most things are our first go ! so remember, experts we are not ! so watch us do it wrong, so you don't have too :)
Having hundreds of kilometres of dirt roads, dirt tracks and various hills with ruts on our doorstep, we venture out and test our 4x4’s to the limit (our limit, not theirs  )
When we can get one, we will slip in a vehicle review, along with some product testing - who does not want to know which tyre stops the best ?
So subscribe and join our journey as we modify, test and improve our cars in as many ways as possible.

    Hows the aluminium rad holding up? I've just bought a cheapo one off eBay as my OEM radiator developed a crack at top and leaking coolant. I've read that you gotta be mindful of electrolysis/galvanic corrosion with aluminium radiators, it'll eat out the core in no time. Apparently need to provide good ground connection to the radiator, and/or an anode rod inside the radiator which will corrode instead of the radiator core.

Our 2010 L200 is great in the back, chalk and cheese to the 2003 that has the G's - the old moaner sits there quite happily, refuses the 2003 in the rear (that sounds rude :)

      @@julieoghestene So the car only has one pedal? How do you do an emergency stop?

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am not 100% convinced you are not on a wind up 🤣 but just in case; the car has accelerator and brake as normal, but the ev motor, when you lift off the accelerator, inverts to slow the car (to a stop or you regulate with the accelerator how much force) the brake is there and I only use it for an emergency or if I have misjudged - or a twat pulls out - I drive daily and would say I use the brake once a week at most -- some more info if interested ..... Pedal driving in an electric vehicle (EV) is a feature that enables the driver to control both acceleration and deceleration using just the accelerator pedal, often referred to as "one-pedal driving." This method leverages regenerative braking, where the electric motor acts as a generator when the accelerator is released, converting kinetic energy back into electrical energy to recharge the battery. Here’s a detailed description of the experience: Acceleration: Smooth and Instant Power Delivery: EVs provide smooth and instant torque, allowing for seamless and rapid acceleration. As you press the accelerator pedal, the vehicle responds immediately, delivering a swift and quiet surge of power. Linear Response: Unlike internal combustion engines, EVs have a more linear response to pedal input, meaning the acceleration is more predictable and easier to modulate. Deceleration: Regenerative Braking Activation: When you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal, regenerative braking kicks in. The electric motor starts to slow down the vehicle by converting its kinetic energy back into electricity, which is stored in the battery. Variable Deceleration: The amount of regenerative braking can vary. Some EVs allow you to adjust the level of regen braking, either through settings or paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. Higher settings provide stronger deceleration, which can bring the car to a near stop without using the brake pedal. Energy Efficiency: This process improves overall energy efficiency, as energy that would otherwise be lost as heat in traditional braking is instead recaptured. Benefits: Reduced Brake Wear: Since the regenerative system handles most of the deceleration, the conventional brakes are used less frequently, resulting in reduced wear and tear. Enhanced Control: One-pedal driving can offer a more intuitive and engaging driving experience, especially in urban environments with frequent stops. It allows for smoother and more precise control over the vehicle’s speed. Challenges: Learning Curve: Drivers new to one-pedal driving might need time to adjust. The strong regenerative braking can be surprising at first, but most find it becomes second nature quickly. Variable Regen Strength: Depending on the EV model, the strength of regenerative braking can vary, which might require the driver to adapt their driving style accordingly. Real-World Usage: Urban Driving: One-pedal driving shines in city traffic, where it minimizes the need for constant switching between the accelerator and brake pedals. Highway Driving: On highways, drivers may use one-pedal driving less frequently, as maintaining a constant speed typically requires less deceleration. Overall, one-pedal driving in an EV enhances efficiency, control, and the overall driving experience, contributing to the growing popularity of electric vehicles.

    I'd wondered about this topic before and it turns out it's not left to chance how the brake lights operate. It's defined in UN regulations for the type approval of passenger vehicles. The section on regenerative braking for electric vehicles states no brake lights when deceleration is below 0.7m/s^2 and brake lights on above 1.3m/s^2. In between these values the lights can be on or off. There has to be some hysteresis in the threshold to minimise the lights repeatedly flashing on/off.

    I’m sorry. Regeneration is utterly annoying in dense traffic. Break light comes on and off all the time simply because the driver lifts a little (too much) or simply doesn’t know how to operate the car properly. Maybe a flash red light in the instrument should come on too.

    • @chris-0034
      @chris-0034 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's annoying but it's not just down to electric driver behaviour. The radar on electric/hybrid vehicles is measuring the distance to the car in front and will normally switch automatically between coast, light regen and heavy regen in response to the vehicle in front accelerating/braking.

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree totally, it is really hard to judge in the Mini, the coast area is tiny (think I have cracked it mind) our crap video does not show it well enough, it was surprisingly hard to do, limited skill and experience etc etc - I think a visual aid showing the driver when the brake lights come on is needed - it annoys me, so I have attempted to be very conscious of how I brake, I suspect it is worse in cars with less regen - had a VW a few weeks ago and noticed how much more I flick to the brake compared to mine, thus making the lights come on when off the accelerator, then again on the brake ? but cannot be 100% sure.

    • @martinsoelby5902

      @@DrivenMadShow Why not just skip it? I’m pretty sure I can get any car EV or ICE to do the WLTP figure by reading traffic and coasting. The regen and subsequently flash of break lights ruins the flow and creates jams. That for a few miles of range.

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have it just about cracked , my lights hardly came on during filming - thats why this episode was so crap me thinks 🤣 - I am here in our Tcross (petrol) today (Under Mrs M's instructions to valet it), I really (thats big really) hate that I have to use the brake. It is very hilly where we live, you could say mountainous (but thats stretching it) and it just bloody rolls and rolls, so I sit 50% of the way here on the brake (its an auto, I could shift myself to use engine braking I grant you, its just a faf I dont now need) - I freely admit to being an ev convert, not for any other reason than how it drives - the Mini was an error, I had no clue we would all like the power train so much (thats son, wife and me) so really need 4 doors - Nath has spend ££££ on his Abarth, especially to make it very loud - yet nicks the Mini at every opportunity (and he was distraught when I opted for the ev variant when I bought it - a word beginning with W and ending in er was used as I recall) So I am now considering changing it - but just to piss you off 🤣, 1 peddle driving is top of my must have list 🥰

  • @antonioPaulino
    @antonioPaulino 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I thought this video was all about the break lights coming on and when they do but the comments don't show that, disappointing that the subject got lost. What I can tell you is that it's not about the regen alone but how much of it is applied by the vehicle. In other words it's about how much or how quickly the car is slowing down that will rule when the lights come on. So, just slight regen does not turn the break lights on. Also, one pedal drive is not the most efficient way to drive it never has been. Coasting is the most efficient way to save energy! Just remember when regen is on then that energy is converted and stored and every time there is a conversion there are losses. By normal two pedal driving you are not always using the breaks so, regen will happen at the same rate as when one pedal driving. Some people use one pedal driving saying to maximise regen but think about it why would this be maximising it? It's only out of convenience that one pedal driving exists and not because it's saving energy

      agree totally, it is really hard to judge in the Mini, the coast area is tiny (think I have cracked it mind) our crap video does not show it well enough, it was surprisingly hard to do, limited skill and experience etc etc - I think a visual aid showing the driver when the brake lights come on is needed on the dash - it annoys me, so I have attempted to be very conscious of how I brake, I suspect it is worse in cars with less regen - had a VW a few weeks ago and noticed how much more I flick to the brake compared to mine, thus making the lights come on when off the accelerator, then again on the brake ? but cannot be 100% sure.

    Exciting! I never tested an electric car, I don't like them either. But it's nice to get as much information as possible, somewhen there will only be such vehicles. My company bought a Volkswagen e-Up for us to travel to remote stations, but I didn't have to go there yet.

      As I am spoilt - I have the L200 diesel and use my wife's Tcross (petrol) - I bought the Mini as we now live 1km from the man cave and the L200 was on death row - it was a mistake, we had no clue just how good an ev is, its the weapon of choice for all of us - but I should have got 4 doors ! the Mini is excellent, fast, fun and cost nothing to run - but the rear seats are a token gesture really as I expected it only to be used to and from the mancave, but we want to go everywhere in it - Nath just pinching it now to go into Faro :)

    • @Felix-fy7ki
      @Felix-fy7ki 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DrivenMadShowI'll see, when I will have to use an ev. For private use, it will be a problem for me, because sometimes I have to travel longer distances spontaneously. But I'm also a petrolhead, I love the sound, I love how engines work.

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have got old :) I doubt just ev will ever happen, already they are looking to taxing them heavily, as most things, those in power are brain dead, stupid, greedy or just plain crooked - possibly all of that - the UK drove me nuts, got to have diesel, only diesel, no, now you all own one, get petrol again, no get a hybrid, no get an ev ? its all crap really - everything boils down to money, always has, always will - but I cannot see how engines will die anytime soon, not while I am still breathing - I find the Mini just simple and convenient, but thats my life style here - I did do some long trips in a Tesla (UK) many a year ago, even back then it was fine wandering around southern England (I did about 300 a day) - my pal has an iPace, just did Portsmouth to Glasgow, absolute nightmare apparently 🤣

    • @Felix-fy7ki
      @Felix-fy7ki 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DrivenMadShowI agree in any detail! For technical reasons, I'd prefer a plugin hybrid with a petrol, maybe a diesel engine and a laaarge battery, but only if I can't have a petrol or diesel car any more, because they're taxed too high or other government made issues.

      I didn't like ev until 2 years ago when a UK car subscription company started to offer EV's during lockdown, started off with a Peugeot e-208 for 1 year, stopped the subscription and bought an e-208. I considered it a workhorse because on 1 charge it could safely drive me from London to Birmingham, or London to Brighton and back on 1 charge. Very roomy, extremely low maintenance costs and beats any boy racers at the traffic lights. Now I drive a 2023 Mini Cooper SE L3, it's important to mention L3 as it stands for 'Level 3' spec, I always play my music on the Harmon Kardan at top volume from 12pm to 6pm and it's only consumed 5% of the battery, that's bloody incredible! The lowest setting of the A/C makes the cabin cold in 2 mins and only consumes 0.5% of the battery. I drove with A/C on all day this summer and the battery was still at 50% by 9pm, having started at 12pm, periodically on and off though. I've tested every EV and always come back to the Mini Cooper SE because in sport mode, the front end lifts up like a supercar and that's incredibly addictive, not great for tyre wear 🤣 Previous to driving EV, I owned a 2021 petrol 2.0 Mini Cooper JCW, a full tank would cost between £75-£120 depending on super fuel or not. A full charge in the Mini Cooper SE costs £5-£12 at a public charger or £1-£3 at home overnight. Even though it has 145 miles range, it charges from 10% to 80% in 20 mins in the winter, 12-15 mins in the summer. In a space of 18 months, everyone in my family has changed from ICE to EV, 9 cars to be exact (uncles, cousins etc) and my neighbours have swapped to EV too. Out of 120 houses, 75 houses have EV's. Some are elderly and cannot drive, or some work from home so don't need to drive and they've got a plethora of lime bikes to hire.
