Dana has gone on record to reveal that Disney was the only service that was willing to let her make Owl House the way she wanted. Nickelodeon turned her down, CN turned her down, heck she admitted that even Netflix durning their time where they were the kings of animated kid shows that takes risks rejected Owl House.
People act like Disney doesn’t takes risks but they do. They took a risk with Gravity Falls (which only got two seasons because Alex didn’t want to make a third due to the hassles that came while making S1, Disney wanted a S3 because they knew it was a popular moneymaker but Alex said no), they took a risk with Star Vs (which only got cut short because the viewership made executives think it’s not popular enough to continue), they took a very big risk with the DuckTales reboot, they took a risk with Amphibia (which only has three seasons because that’s what the creator envisioned), they took a risk with Owl House, they’re taking a risk with The Ghost & Molly McGee, they’re taking a risk with Moon Girl and they’ve been taking risks with their animated movies.
It’s just the live action movies and shows that isn’t Marvel and Star Wars (and maybe the stuff from Fox not sure atm) that have been safe as heck. For the most part. Andi Mack really broke a lot of boundaries from what I’ve heard but that’s just only one of the few exceptions.
Oh and side note that line from the cyclops character you brought up was done by the va’s request. She has a wife and didn’t feel comfortable saying the words “my husband” so she nicely asked if she could change it to “my wife” and got the ok for that. This was HER CHOICE. Not Disney’s.

Considering the trash CN greenlit in the past, I think they made a BIG mistake in passing on Owl House.
The network is DESPERATE for serialized, action-filled, story-driven shows even now and by desperate; I mean it's lacking any shows of the sort and is barely hanging on with the three shows left on the air

As Far as I know, and as far as people who know production have told me, TOH was cancelled because it was "too serialized" and Disney wanted more Issue-of-the-day cartoons since they're easier to show on reruns or watch casually on TV-
Of course, with Disney having Disney+ this makes no sense, to me the show was cancelled because the universe hates me :)

Disney's been hypocritical as of late a lot more often as well as Warner Brothers themselves. I don't want to get into it too much but then canceling shows like the owl house and many others while promoting trash like the Ant-Man movie and a few others...... let's just say they seem to have the same allergy to money and common Sense like Nintendo does from time to time but hey that's Hollywood lately and I don't want to get into it.

I don't think it's the lgbtq cuz they've been pushing that a lot in their other movies and stuff and it's the one of the reasons why a lot of their movies get censored when they error in China and some of them even got flat out banned. Not only that they use that either defense mechanism for any time their movies fail so I can't really be the lgbtq being represented in their brand.

Why did Amphibia get a full third season and not The Owl House? I mean the second season of both shows end the same way with a sacrifice and everyone trapped in the human world. Amphibia’s third season is literally what could have been The Owl House’s third season could have been. What possible difference could have caused only one of these shows to get what it deserved?

      Avengers EMH: First Time?

    • @sirraven_
      @sirraven_ ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@kevinmorris3200 Amphibia got its second and third season, because they spent season 1 mainly with episodic storytelling for the episodes. They had lore or story episodes, but they were few and far between, being the first episode, the last minute of episode 7b, episode 10, the burying of the box, and the finale. Those 5 segments, with 2 of them only having story stuff at the very end, are out of the 39 segments in the 20 episodes, which would be only around 8% of the season is focusing on a serialized story. This then allows Disney to play ANY of these episodes, in any order that they want because while the slight continuity to previous episodes are mentioned, they do not rely on the viewers knowledge of those episodes to enjoy this episode.
Take for example, Gravity Falls season 1. Every episode was episodic, with them only bringing up the lore/story progression at the end of episode 1, 4, 11, and then the entirety of the finale. Every other episode was episodic adventures, that the average audience member could just hop on to watch. That is how I found out about the show, watching one of the early episodes when it first aired, instead of watching it in order. And even without watching episode 1 at the time first, I still was able to enjoy the show, just as everyone else was able to.
The Owl House however, has a HEAVY focus on serialization. Unlike Amphibia with it's a/b episodes, the Owl House takes up a 30 minute time slot, meaning the story being told must engage the audience for that time frame. And with season 1, they lean not only on continuity from previous episodes, but they continue from the previous episodes as well. Episode 1 goes into Episode 2, which goes into episode 3, and so on. With such a heavy lean on continuity, this led to a decline in viewership, as they started with 610k viewers at the premier, and had 380k viewers for the finale. While this may seem like good numbers, compare this to Gravity Falls premier of 3.4 MILLION viewers, and 3.18 Million viewers at the finale. Owlhouse had a massive drop in views, never going over the peak, since people would get confused if they didn't see previous episodes, and would rather watch something else that is episodic at nature.
Now for season 2 of Amphibia and Owl House is something entirely different. Amphibia still held the episodic nature, but they split the episodic episodes into arcs. Season 1 had it split into an arc, but it was just episodes 1-10 = Anne is a monster, episodes 11-20 = Anne is a town hero. The episodes are still episodic, but the townsfolk treats her better. For season 2, they split the arcs into:
Episode 1-5: Roadtrip (They can air 10 segments of road trip based episodes. The only story/progression thing is frobo being made, but that's basically it.)
Episode 6-10: Newtopia Adventures (9 Segments all placed in Newtopia. At the end of some episodes they showcase the king and marcy progressing on the box, but the episodes can still air randomly since all that basically changes is the landscapes. They have episodes that continue after another, but since it is an A/B show they air both at the same time, and episode 7 explains the events of the previous, without it being heavily involved IE there is no ant stuff that was introduced in episode 6 that came back for episode 7.)
Episode 11-20: Wartwood Adventures again, but this time with Marcy. Every once in a while have a lore continuation episode, but combining the 3 temples makes it 2 episodes in length. The second to last episode, while leading up to the finale, still can be aired randomly as it still is episodic "Battle of the Bands" or "Dinner with enemy" trope episodes.
For Owl House Though, Season 2 isn't split into arcs, but just every episode continues after the other, moreso than season 1. Even the first 10 episodes alone showcases this, as each episode progresses Belos's plan, heavy Lumity Progression, and lore drops almost every episode, which to a random viewer would make no sense. I can showcase a random episode of Amphibia season 2 to a random person, and because of how they showcase the character's and their personalities, they can get a grasp of what the show is like. But with Owl House, a random season 2a episode goes from trying to find King's Dad, to looking for the missing human, to progressing the building of the portal by belos. Every episode is connected and you need priorer knowledge, and judging by the ratings they got starting with 290k viewers at the premier, it is safe to say that this wasn't working out for Disney. That is why they shortened season 3, because with the constant decline in live viewership (Since online views on their youtube episodes or someone's streams doesn't help disney out for the initial ratings). Meanwhile Amphibia, due to having an episodic story in nature, had almost 390k viewers at their season 2 premier, and kept a consistent viewership throughout it's run.
And yes, both seasons ends with a sacrifice with them going to a human world, but if you realize that the owl house was shortned before season 2b was out, then that means they had to rewrite the ENTIRE rest of the series so they can tell a satisfying conclusion that fans would like. The original season 3 wouldn't even have the whole human realm sacrifice or collector being the main focus, as the main ending to the series was going to be the Day of Unity as said by Dana.
So to summarize, Amphibia was more episodic in nature, which fits the Disney brand of content to get viewership watching. Owl House had way to much serialization, which caused it to get canceled in season 2.

@@sirraven_So this explains why DuckTales 2017 also got cancelled at Season 3 but even dropped to DisneyXD after a full focus in the main channel when Season 2 was on air. The show was about to get a big serialization in its episodes because as 1st Season was about Dewey and the mystery about Della and the 2nd one centered in Louie's ambitions, 3rd would be Huey's pursuing F.O.W.L. and then 4th with Webby's ultimate arc. Only dedicated fans will be into it so Disney executives were like "Okay let's cut it. It's still an animated kids show so children will watch it anyways, plot or not". So sad Huey's and Webby's arcs got both cut so they would fit in the short spam they got to end the series (still a magnificent ending tho, but could be even better…).
Btw I was one of those who dropped TOH in first season. Sorry but not sorry; the filler episodes where just lame (like the circus one) but the breakpoint was that point most of the worldbuilding -in terms of how «politics» and rules work there- was thrown to the window in that specific episode when Luz got permission to LEARN EVERY COVEN ARTS like it was not a big deal. I swear why the second episode was a reflection about Mary Sue and later do a big Mary Sue move? C'mon…

I appreciate that Disney at least has admitted their mistake for cancelling the Owl House. I heard somewhere that after getting the numbers back for Episode 1 of Season 3 they actually did a double take and realized that the show is a hit and aparrently went on record regretting their decision of cancelling it. Whether this means Dana Terrace can make a directors cut edition in the form of a comic series or a prequel series following Eda as a kid is unknown but Disney really does want to make it up to the folks who brought the owl house to life the way they did. Also if the director's cut does happen i really hope we get to know more characters who were meant to be parrallels to the coven heads. I don't know why but it feels like Darius and Eberwolf's double agent role was rushed to fit the unfortunate cancelation like Dana didn't have time to finish the plot involving them as two of the first coven heads we got to meet. And aside from Raine, Terra, Belos, Avery, and Eda (Bad Girl Coven totally counts), we didn't get to know any of the other coven heads who were clearly meant to have a bigger role in the story.
Personally i kinda hoped that the student prodigy's at Hexside would get one on one battles with the respective heads of the covens as they could have been seen as dark reflections of the students if they kept believing in Belos's lies. Willow vs Terra, Gus vs Avery, Amity vs Darius, Hunter Vs Belos, etc.
Maybe these arent what she originally planned but we won't ever get to know because of Disney's boneheaded decision and failure to give things a proper chance. That plus NDAs which can really get in the way of going into further detail so Disney doesnt look bad which really doesnt work with or without the nda. It peeves me off.

I feel current American animation studios need to take a lesson from Studio Sanrio. While best know for Hello Kitty, they where aware Teens and Adults watch animated shows and made shows for that age range to get a piece of that demographic pie. A new audience is a new revenue stream after all. And if you offer nothing for that market, you get none of the revenue.

Heck they reached a compromise with Matt Braly the creator of Amphibia that allowed the S2 finale to air with no censorship to it (and they’ve been letting Dana do a lot of stuff with the specials). If this was CN or especially Nickelodeon, you can count on that scene with Marcy being gone.

Going back to CN I wonder if Toonami or Adult Swim would have taken the Marcey scene? Maybe Adult Swim would have been the wrong direction. I wouldn't want Robot Chicken jokes in the series. But I could have used a little of that Samuri Jack love to it. Im surprised that many of the announced CN shows are apparently still happening even with all the cancelations.

@@sasamichan - Well that’s cause CN is only slightly stupid. They’re not Warner Discover levels of stupid. That company is basically trying to outdo Nickelodeon on who can be worse to it’s creators.
And I brought up Nickelodeon because though Zim was dark it wasn’t as dark as it could be as the creator and staff revealed via the episode commentaries (so glad I got those dvds when they initially came out) that Nick forced them to change a lot of stuff. Like Keef and that annoying kid who lied to get that game system were supposed to die at the end of the episode but Nick’s higher ups said no.
In fact they were surprised when they did notice that they got away with killing someone on screen because they rarely got away with it. As for Avatar TLA it did a bit more better than Korra.
Like next to Harvey Beaks, Korra is like the poster child of why you don’t work for Nickelodeon. Originally it was supposed to be a one season miniseries but the popularity for it was so high that Nick’s executives forced a second season on the staff thus causing them to change their ending. Korra was never supposed to get back her bending but due to the staff getting a S2, they had to pull a deus ex machina instead.
Than there is the infamy that is seasons 3 and 4. About halfway or so through S3 an episode where the season’s villain killed a character on screen was quickly pulled from being aired and just released online with no announcement what so ever. The rest of S3 was also aired on Nick’s site without them saying about it but once the episodes aired it was quickly realized that Nick did this because like that episode I talked about, it was pretty dang violent or at least as violent as a kids cartoon can be.
However that was understandable to an extent because stupid parents being stupid parents and complaining about that stuff if they saw it on tv. What wasn’t was Nickelodeon revealing that the final fourth season would be online only via their site the day before they dropped the first episode of S4.
Disney at least waits till it’s a couple or so weeks away to reveal when the specials are airing. So yeah Disney is definitely better than the others.

Finally went and saw this show after all this years of hearing about it. I admit I was´t captured by it in the begining. The usual problem with modern shows since 2010 are this constant. "Hey I describe a thing seriously but then I make a joke about it not being that serious." The downplay you have to add in the dialoge. It really irks me.
I did think the show was confused in the begining. Luz wants to go to a witch school. Great she is in. We don´t see any lessons she is on, instead she learns her main source of magic on her own with the glyphs wich I like, that was a cool way to explain how she could and could´t use magic. And sure I did´t like Amity at first but then it grew and the romance was build up to beautifully.
I did think it was try hard to make Luz be so disliked by everyone including the camp which forces you to act "normal" but then I realize there sadly are camps like that in real life.
Now I like Eda but I did´t like King or Hooty in the first season. King grew on me but Hooty is just dumb and stupid character I kind of like to laugh at XD
Season 2 overall improved lots of things. Introducing Hunter but I think it was wonky with him having a secret identity and then not and then other big things with the circle leaders I would have liked to know more of. And then minor complain how big/small is the world? It literally seems to be only the Titan corpse they live on and a few islands. Where did everyone come from?
Oh yes one thing. Now I did´t relate to Luz that much even in Season 2. But Season 3 I see what they went with it. Luz is a great autistic character. She got her intrests yes but also one grippling thing I don´t see shown enough. Self guilt. When she feels so bad she is expecting punishment and even asks for it. That hits hard becuse I am partly like that. Opening up here. But if I do something really bad even if it´s just a simple misstake, only cost 10$ or something I can feel quilty of that and not settle for saying sorry I want to explain why and how I made that misstake. So nice job there Owl House.
It was to bad about Season 3. I can see the potential for plenty of stories but insted we got specials which had great animation. And stunning visuals and also they went nuts with the stuff they included. Dose´t matter how you color it. They had a rottening Zombie walking around and it´s body melted. Possesion, blood of massive amount.
So it was a good show with good highlights. Maybe not my type of humor at some points and sometimes the conflic gets downplayed but I got overall a good impression of this.

As a reviewer and graduate of history, it's always interesting to look at the production of a show and see what happened. Especially when rumors begin to appear
In the case of the Owl House, the big question will always be "why was it canceled". The problem is dealing with Disney. Their past, and I mean recent past, paints a rather consistent picture when dealing with LGBTQ content. Even if information comes out from the CEO, there will always be doubt.

Wow! Awesome! Thank you so much for finally reviewing this!! Yeah, Dana said a long time ago that serialization might have been the reason for the cancellation, and some people thought the darker tone might have had something to do with it, but Disney was very obscure about their reasoning. Most of us are pretty convinced that it was canceled because of the gay content, which Disney wants to minimize so they can sensor stuff when they sell it overseas. In fact, Dana even said, add an event in Mexico that one executive tried to tell her to erase Luz’s sexual identity. After she refused, she got the news of the cancellation, or rather the capping of the series after two seasons. Disney TVA had to lobby hard to get the remaining specials for the diminished season three. A lot of us have been active on Twitter trying to support the show. We might not get anything out of it, but causing a stir is enough. Dana also said that she would like to continue the story in a comic form, and she floated the idea of a spinoff or a prequel series. I don’t know if she’ll do another show in this universe, even if given the opportunity. I would leave that up to her.

#Lumity is actually what brought me back to the show after initially hearing about it. That’s what I’m the most invested in. #TheOwlHouse definitely took a risk in treading new ground, and Disney needs to start playing it, safe, and start doing what’s right regarding #lgbtqia+ and other issues. They take some risks, but not enough. And it happens differently in different parts of the company. I’m pretty convinced that there is a full-blown Civil War inside of Disney. Basically, creators versus executives. But maybe that’s an exaggeration on my part. At any rate, I am sure there is conflict within the company. I hope that Bob Iger can correct at least some of these things now that he’s back.

You must not've seen the video's that leaked about Disney's "Not So Secret Gay Agenda"- actual quote by the disney showrunner.
Disney's greater problem is that they don't understand what audiences want anymore. They love the virtue signalling stuff they can shove into shows- but only if the show does it in a hamfisted way that the board of directors can see and understand.
When diversity is done subtly and weaved seamlessly into the story so that the story is first- Such as with the Owl House- they don't like it. And that's why this show got canned, but we got that Proud Family reboot or that atrocious Lightyear movie.

I'm Christian and straight. Technically A sexual or ACE to be more specific. I believe in God, and God is love. I am a practicing Christian. But I am not going to start telling people what God doesn't agree with or is against. Because I litterally don't know. And neither do you. You may not agree with homosexuality, but no where in the bible does it say God disagrees with homosexuality. Therefore I don't believe he is against it. Sexual orientation was not understood in biblical times. To say God is against homosexuality is poor biblical scholarship when translated into other languages and dialects, and a cultural bias read into the Bible, something you probably grew up on and don't know any different therefore believe it to be true.
I know the bible is against sexual exploitation, which is what Leveticus was probably mainly about, (cos I know you'll probably throw that at me to somehow back up your statement) not the sexual orientations since in biblical times people didn't understand what they were or had a word for it since the word ' homosexuality' wasn't invented til the 19th century. I believe it was talking about exploiting people regardless of gender for sex, might it be same sex or not. But that's my take.
That's the wonderful thing about theology and philosophy and religion. No one knows who's right or wrong. And no one knows what God agrees or disagrees with.

One thing I love about the representation in TOH is that they don't go "look at this" with it while on the Boiling Isles. It normalizes LGBTQ+ by showing kids that there's nothing wrong with it. Even with Belos and Odalia, the two characters you would expect to be trans/homophobic never question it. Belos uses the correct pronouns for Raine, and Odalia's only issue with Lumity is that Luz was a fugitive, saying she'll "find her a new girlfriend". The most "look at this" they get is when Luz comes out to her mom, but that moment also felt like it was needed with the possibility of the show being canceled because of the representation. Dana has gone on record saying that wasn't why it got canceled, but it's still a possible reason, and having that big f-you moment was so cathartic.
