    This video helped me so much.
    1990 caprice classic 305 Tbi
    It was on the passenger side right next to the firewall. Came out of the trunk of cables and had a little clip for me right there thanks to GM.

    TBI 👍🏼👍🏼
    It's not a carburettor, but it sure is better than that stupid spider injector.

      Agreed , ive always been able to make very efficient vehicles out of the tbi simply, cheaply, and most of all more reliably than them overrated notec junk, the only time i thought otherwise was when vortec’s were brand new during the late 90’s and hadn’t seen the downsides yet 🤙

    Always good to have at least one pre computer age vehicle in the household!

      Unless its 60s, it will still have a computer. Just not what we know of today. Its more of a module.

    Thank you!
    Set mine by ear. After doing this i know it was way off.
    One thing, my connector was brown with a black wire on my 1994 Chevy C3500
    Thanks again!!

    Retired Pontiac GMC master tech.here. thats exactly where to unhook the tac ref.wire the barrel connector u der the hood usually breaks or the weather pack seal rips and takes flight 😆 I've always used that one

    So from my understanding, you get the truck to operating temp, unplug that wire, set timing to 0 degrees, plug wire back in, then you’re good to go?

    • @lancegodbey6450
      @lancegodbey6450 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes sir

    • @averagejoe6150
      @averagejoe6150 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @lancegodbey6450 And if the truck is far enough out of time that it won't run long enough to get the engine to operating temp?

    • @LeeGoodFella007

      I’m confused just by shining that light at it, it goes into timing?

    • @Dirty_white_boy
      @Dirty_white_boy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LeeGoodFella007 You have to turn the distributor.

    • @jordanhare1940

      @LeeGoodFella007 the light let's you know how much to turn the distributor

  • @nickdeli3618

    My timing light at the time broke but I did have a vacuum gauge and set my manifold pressure at peak, shut it off and reconnected my bypass. My suburban was was getting 17mpg here in NM four corners area

    Appreciate it, only thing I needed was the wire disconnect location.

  • @sethyoung3573
    @sethyoung3573 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's not a bypass connection. It's an electronic advance. These trucks suck to try to set timing. Change the distributor and put it back in the exact location of the timing is completely off.

    • @DaytonCarCare
      @DaytonCarCare 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah that's what I was thinking. Didn't understand what a "bypass" meant. I just had to put a new distributor in a 92 K3500 454 and did it by ear. It's pretty close but I'm going to get a timing light. Been ages since I worked on a Chevy last one was a 69 El Camino with a 350. I work mostly on OBD2 German cars.

      Thank you for clarifying this.

  • @alexcota5668
    @alexcota5668 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    So If you don’t do this step of disconnecting that wire it won’t be timed correctly? Because I have a 91 that I set it at dead 0 turned it on and got the timing light and adjusted the distributor but didn’t disconnect that wire so I shut it off and truck now doesn’t want to start now I have to re-do the timing all over again just to turn it on

    • @lancegodbey6450
      @lancegodbey6450 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes base timing will be off becaise the computor will see the change and offset because of it. Unplugging the reference wire makes the computor forget, for lack of a better word

  • @XJon2011
    @XJon2011 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    So what about stretch in the timing chain or wear on the teeth? Higher mileage engines will have more variables than just going back to factory fresh specs

    • @nickdeli3618
      @nickdeli3618 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I seen stretched chains give a unsteady line were it would bounce around

    • @RatedR-normal
      @RatedR-normal ปีที่แล้ว

      Timing chains don’t stretch lol

    • @XJon2011
      @XJon2011 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RatedR-normal stretch in a chain is referring to general wear between each link, which is a form of 'stretch' in the overall length of the chain. Like are you the word police? You know exactly what I'm referring to and a ton of people refer to it the same way. Great contribution to the car community Mr. English.

    I feel like there's some sort of conspiracy to not show where the gd clamp nut is located to be able to adjust the distributor. I've broken more vacuum lines and electrical connectors just trying to find the mf clamp nut than I have throughout my entire life

    • @Markgcr
      @Markgcr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a cheap special tool (wrench) to get at that clamp bolt. I am glad that I bought it because that bolt was tight and long

    With the by-pass connector reconnected at an idle what does the computer take the idle timing to?

    • @paralegalparaplegic8177
