    the manual for my '74 sbc says set initial timing to 6* but that is with the vacuum disconnected, so wish these guys touched on vacuum advance a bit, other than that it was a solid video

    • @howtofixmysilverado6791
      @howtofixmysilverado6791 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is probably why he is telling you to set the initial timing at 12 BTDC. Some Ig. set ups use a magneto style pickup inside the dist. chevy refers to that as being called an ignition module being used in place of a mechanical advance Sic Big block chevy on my 93 Silverado. The computer does the advance curve from the initial setting so there is no mechanical vacuum advance. Even the old style Big Blocks the initial setting would be about 6BTDC with the advance connected and I do not approve of that method for 2 reasons with a mechanical advance. Under load Sic> a steep hill the engine maintains a different curve. Disconnecting the advance sort of simulates that curve but you can't simulate a load and steep hill and that is one of thee main reasons the pulling camshafts were invented. Always use 12 to 16 BTDC for your initial settings and go from there. Too much advance can create intense internal heat so it's better to start in the basement and work your way up. The last more important reason has to do with tire size can affect the timing position. Believe that or not turning a large or smaller rear or heavy mud tires requires some extra retarding of the initial ig setting. Also firing too far before that top peak pressure can also cause extreme heat and especially on a TBI motor it will feed the engine way too much fuel and that is what causes that extreme heat. The reason most people with RVs have so many issues with the BB Chevy engines in motor homes. Those engines are already facing extreme heat inside and under that huge body of a motor home. Then plugs matter most Auto Light & GM AC Delco plugs you get from places like Advanced and Auto Zone their catalogs were affected by the collapsed economy and many of the proper heat range plugs are just not in their inventories especially for Motor Homes and 4x4 off roaders. Plain and simple it is goddamned hard to get the right plugs to use anymore. Even the dealer catalogs only go back 10 or so years and then the history is lost... You end up at the shops of specialists like me and I struggle to get the right shit to tune an engine.

I have been setting my dist in at 0 tdc,I would imagine this will be a game changer for more power on my 383 stroker.If I understand this correctly please let me know. thank you

    Glad I just happen to stumble on to this video. I just started a new project and I don’t have any history on the engine. I suspect it has a aftermarket cam just based on the idle but stupid me I took the distributor out without noting the timing. I did mark in general the location of the distributor but I don’t know if I can set the timing correctly. After watching this clip I’m confident that I can get it close enough. If anyones has any tips for me I’d very much appreciate it. It’s a chevy 5.0l 305.

    and I always verify TDC by installing a piston stop (made out of a bolt in sparkplug) in one cyclinder. wind the engine one way with a spanner gently until it stops- mark a line on your balancer, with a sharpie or something. And then reverse the engine and move until it hits again. Now scribe a line exactly in the middle of those two marks, that is your REAL TDC.

    Hi crew, I dialed in 34 degrees of total timing in my near stock (intake, exh, carb) 84 350 Chevy but it seems to perform worse now than when it had less timing. It’s not knocking & I’m curious why?

    • @kylelove927
      @kylelove927 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      *Low octane fuel could be an issue. (Switch to premium fuel if you haven't already done so)
      *Higher engine temperatures could cause knocking/ pinging. (Might need a colder thermostat)
      *Lean fuel trim from improper carburetor jetting. (Larger jets might help)
      *Potentially too much total timing in general. (Retard it a tiny bit until the knocking stops)
      *Cast iron heads that hold a lot of heat could be a reason. (Nothing you can do except retard total timing)
      *Exhaust pipes could be too small and not allowing proper amount of heat to espace the cylinders. (Larger exhaust will help but I very seriously doubt that's your issue)

      Bobo mcrae not a 100% sure.
      But, I think it’s not grounded. It’s using you to complete the circuit.
      Even though your distributor is new. I would open it up and double check for that ground wire and strap is hooked up.
