    About DIY Danie:
    Some of the wisest words I’ve ever heard came from a fictional children's television show where a spontaneous and courageous teacher named Mrs. Frizzle preached the motto- TAKE CHANCES, GET MESSY, MAKE MISTAKES. These are six words I’ve carried with me my whole life. To be creative, you must be willing to try new ideas, take risks and boldly go where no creative soul has gone before! You might mess up, but that’s okay because you most likely pushed yourself to new ideas, new ways of thinking and learned a little something along the way! Welcome to my channel: DIY Danie, a place made for all the creative junkies, DIY warriors, home decor inspirers and interior decorating seekers like me, who need a place to feel inspired and motivated to try new ideas in their home!

    Hey Danie, would you consider to fill the cracks with the „Kintsugi“ art of repairing holes or cracks like this? Its basicly an gold glue that will be filled in the gaps, will make it sturdier and not hide the cracks but highlight the imperfection and make it prettier.

      I literally typed out the same thing and then thought, 'let me see if someone else made the same comment first' ❤️ also maybe styrofoam legs covered with a light cement could've lighten the weight a little 🤷

    As you were working, I thought of a variation for this project - I love the concrete top, but I think I would stain the wooden legs and play up the contrast in the materials. Not necessarily the West Elm dupe, but still a visually interesting project.

      I use packing peanut in the bottom of big planters. I wonder f they would float? Or if you could mix them in. You couldn’t have used plaster of Paris to fill the cracks? Or how about an epoxy pour in another color. For the record, I liked the bowl shape of yours better than the flatter shape of the original.

    Hi. I live in a Caribbean island and our roofs are made of cement or concrete. The way they make it to avoid cracks is create a kind of pool of water on top of the fresh cement and don’t let it dry for a full day until the cement sets. That might help you the next time you need a smooth surface in a concrete material.

  • @LisaCSwain
    @LisaCSwain ปีที่แล้ว +126

    Danie, you really did a great job with this esp dealing with the temp and humidity constraints of this time of year! Something to consider to make it lighter is to use perlite from the garden center in your concrete mix - just a little tip from my days of concrete canoeing as a civil engineering student. 😉 Also, you can "wet sand" concrete with water and the sanding screen that is typically used for drywall. You really did a great job and should be proud of your results!!

    If you make 2 bowls, one a little smaller than the other, then set the small bowl inside the large bowl and only pour concrete in the space between them. Then use a piece of plywood for the top, seal with epoxy and add thin layer of cement or spackling compound over the plywood and down the sides. If bowl is @ 2 inches thick, top could be anchored to the bowl with concrete screws. Just my thought.

    My sense is that if you read between the lines, the original West Elm "Lava Stone" is actually a kind of concrete as well: they list "volcanic ash" and "sand" as what it is made of. I suspect that it also includes something like finely ground styrofoam to lighten the mix. I would search on-line for something like "lightweight concrete mix" and see what comes up if you decide to do another project along these lines. Even so, I'm impressed with how yours came out: cement can be unforgiving and your version looks great!

    Congrats on your wedding! Welcome to Diana! The table is lovely and I think the cracks add character and interest. My idea would be to fill the cracks with gold liquid and clear seal it! It’s some kind of Japanese process when they repair important belongings (I wish I could remember the name). It appeals to me because it represents fixing mistakes in your life, growing from that to make your life better and in that process, you (and what you’ve repaired) are even more interesting and beautiful! Anyway…you did a wonderful job and it looks great! Much love from Ohio!!!❤

    It came out so neat! Digging a hole to support the mold was a stroke of genius.
    I don't have much experience with concrete, but my understanding is that humidity helps prevent cracking? A spritz of water on some plastic tarping can help the concrete cure at a more consistent rate, meaning the surface won't dry so fast and contract before the inside has a chance to start.

    I love your version of that awesome table!!! Looks more organic, love your design better, and the cracks just adds to the table! Looks like white washed solid wood. I was thinking to lighten the weight a grid of hard card board.

    I'm about 1/3 in but I bet fiberglass would work great for getting the half sphere shape to coat in the cement. Pretty excited to see how this turns out! Back to watching.

    This turned out really well, I think the cracks add a uniqueness to the piece. A little tip (and if you ever attempt this again hehe), the reason for the cracking was because the expansion of the cement. Have you even noticed on sidewalks that there are lines ever so often, that’s there to allow the cement to expand and not crack elsewhere. Also, the temperature change could have contributed to the cracking. Most cement jobs are done in the spring/summer cause the cement can handle the hot weather a lot better than the cold. I used to work as an electrician and working with the builders I picked up a couple things along the way haha.
