In this video I build a beautiful designer oak coffee table for a fraction of what it would cost to purchase in store or online!
Using a series of kerf cuts, I'm able to wrap oak plywood around the curved frame to create a soft, inviting, circular coffee table.
It was finished with a light coloured stain called Hazelwood, to soften the grain colour, then sealed with 6 coats of General finish's Arm-R-Seal semi-gloss topcoat. amzn.to/3hrvRZt

Nicely done! I love how easy it looks when watching someone who knows what they’re doing make something. I would have thought that thickness of plywood could take that curve but I watched and learned. Thanks.

Really great idea and use of cheaper materials.
I don't think there is anyway to avoid this but the base shows vertical lines which I presume match where the cuts are
There was only one vertical line where the plywood wrapped around and met up. I have ideas on how I might try to minimize this if I ever did it again, but you're right, there is definitely a visible seam. But only one, so I have the table turned so it's not visible when you look into the room 😜
Interesting, I wonder if it was the lighting as I could see vertical lines / shadows all over it which made me think it was the cut lines showing through.
@@anonymouspdg6121 ahhh. Yes, those are the kerf cuts showing through. They’re are not nearly as visible when not in direct light coming from the side. But yup, they’re there.

Curious as to your thoughts on using 5mm flexible plywood for the wrap around vs kerfs on thicker plywood? What would be pros/cons? Also what would you do differently if you had to build this again 😊
I'm not sure if the bendy ply comes in Oak. If I were to do it again, I may try to build it so I can wrap it with a veneer to get the smooth Oak finish.
probably a better way as you can see in time 7.57 the kerf cuts are causing the bends to have vertical lines

Mate, how about putting the plywood wrap inside out ? I mean, let those semi detached pieces be visible. That will add lots of interesting elements to the table.
Hmmm, it would definitely be an interesting look, but I don't think it would be nearly as strong.

Did you use 1/2 or 3/4 in plywood?
I used 3/4 plywood.
What’s the reason for not using 1/4” veneer ?
It's certainly something worth thinking about - but in this case, I wanted to have the walls be strong, and 1/4" veneered plywood would have been very thin. It also would have required kerf cuts on the back, so no time saving there. Using the bendable plywood to smoothly go around and then putting a very thin veneer (1/16th) on that could also work.
