  • We gave a pair of designers with very different styles one day to transform the same IKEA Lack coffee table, turning one of the most common pieces of furniture in the world into something personalized and expressive. Designer Ginger Gordon. describes their personal style as bold, free form, and sculptural while Quincy Ellis enjoys playing with light, color, and transparency. Whose IKEA hack would fit most comfortably in your home?

    This whole series of starting with the same materials and creators making it their own is genius. I think the best part about it is being able to see the thought processes behind each aspect of the build.

      I agree as well. And, I think, it was obvious that the admiration was genuine and not at all forced as it so often feels. There was absolutely none of the usual smug undercurrent of “So THAT’S what you came up with? Mine is clearly superior!” These are two interesting people who are able to look beyond their own mode of design and expression to understand and appreciate the other work.

    My ex housemate use to use resin with paintings. Let me tell you, it it the hardest substance to control. The amount of times you need to go back and do it all again because some areas didn’t set while others did. It’s very temperamental. So to get the result that Quincy did is very impressive

    I love that Quincy's still maintains the lack form, some of these transformations just use the piece for materials alone without any reference to the original, forcing their design language onto the piece instead of establishing a dialogue, why I think the lawn chair one was a little more interesting since it challenged the designers to build on top of the metal framework

      @Widdekuu91 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@m4xw3lL17 Same here, I thought they were going to add things onto it.
      Like cutting a square out of the side, for magazines to fit in (or a vase with flowers that'd pop out of the table) and a glass part in the top, with colourful glass, so you can look through and see what's underneath.
      Mosaic-tiles, half-a-bubbles of epoxy on top (large ones) that open and reveal some snacks or candy or..something decorative.
      Youknow, like how oldfashioned world-globe-tables have beer and booze in them (in movies at least) or a special added drawer that works as an additional part of the table, to put the napkins on. I don't know, I thought they were 'hacking' the table, not hacking it into pieces and using the materials.
