I always disliked coffee tables but this video changed my mind! No longer boring! This series is fabulous! Julie can you do a video on TV tables where you can pull them up to the couch to eat dinner. I so dislike these tables but I need them if we have a 49ers game and we are having dinner or some other special show. We had heavy dark wood tables on a dark wood rack and they took up so much space and were so heavy and clumsy and then the wooden stack tables that went inside each other were so cheap looking. And of course the 1950s tin table:). Maybe no one uses them anymore. Thank you Julie for so much inspiration! Love, Kathy

Nice assessment Julie. You did a great job of pointing out the space requirement for selecting the right coffee table design for the living room. I myself use those 1/2 & 2/3 rules of thumb proportioning when designing living room spaces. I also incorporate the special use of the Fibonacci and the golden rectangle proportioning when planning spaces.

When it comes to coffee tables, I like to measure the furniture that will be used and identify how the new coffee table will function while considering aesthetics. Hi Julie, Can you please provide some needed advise? I have a 96 long sofa with an 8x10 rug. I want to purchased a round wood coffee table ( prefer the Feng Shui method to keep the conversation flowing), but I feel the table may appear too small for such a large sofa. Please advise, Gracias.
👌🏼Exactly the video i've been waiting for since a long time. I never had an adequate coffee table, it was much too small. I hate to shop "trial and error" and couldn't figure out what to look for. We just moved into a mid century (1959) traditional home before Halloween and are still deciding on the couches for the room before we decide on the coffee table. But I am flabbergasted at the prices of some of these. Honestly tho they all look like works of art and when we are talking art there is room for investments. Thank you for the list. I am a fan of coffee table, though if I may share, the one I'm using as of now is a leather ottoman which serve as a coffee table, and also something where I put on my legs when I need to relax. It can also be used as additional chair for guest. Having a small space like mine, not only an ottoman but also a metal nesting coffee table from IKEA is my favorite. It goes great with my small minimalist interior. I wish I would have some of those elegant and high-end coffee tables that you featured in the video when I already have a bigger home. I have a nesting coffee table and love it!Easy to move to sweep,it can be split apart for more than 1 person , it does not overwelm the whole space and it looks cool!😉
Thank you Julie for all the great tips!!! Love all your recommendations. For my living room, I bought the Pacific Bench 3-Piece L-Shaped Sectional with Wood Legs from C&B. The length is 110” by 110” so if it’s half then the size of the coffee table should be 55” but I couldn’t find anything in this size for round coffee table. I am eyeing on the Oasis Round Wood Coffee Table also from C&B which is 39.5” width and 39.5” depth. Do you think they will work out? Thanks and have a great day!!!
My measurements are just a rule to scale your furniture proportionately, but of course you can always go more or less Lisa! 48”D would work well if there are no other chairs in the space. 39.5” is great if you have an accent chair facing this sectional 👍🏻

If the oval is too large, I would suggest nesting tables Mystica. That way, you can tuck one underneath the other to free up space. Shape is up to what your seating group dictates. Good luck!
Much needed, thanks. There's so much more advice out there on styling the table than on choosing it in the 1st place. Especially appreciate the height rule. As a stopgap, currently placing drinks on a 28" C table & it's super awkward.

My partners so clumsy, and all of these are so beautiful. Great video as always. I’d love a video on creating a work space at home if you have time please? I have moved all the clutter from the spare room which took a full week of 3 hours per day. And need a small desk and chair for a laptop and and anything else y feet 10 yo u think would be useful . My job is on my feet 10 hours a day in retail and I’m switching to working from home and want to make the space feel comfy enough to not keep getting up and moving. A place to focus and also be at peace. And I already have dozens of plants . Thanks Julie xxx

Great tip about the Pinterest search. I am amazed how awesome coffee tables are, they are so beautiful. Great choices! I would love a video about headboards and bed frames. My bedroom is very small but I would love a tall headboard with a high bed frame so I can organize some stuff under the bed. I’m not sure if the large headboard is a design mistake or a good idea.

Many fine, intelligent and stylish choices here. I was going to suggest nesting tables for you and your growing family. Versatile and modular living is important for you now. Multiuse furniture is space saving and smart. And believe me your growing toy collection will take up most of your decor. It’s temporary and enjoy it while it lasts. Happy days! I did not know about nesting coffee tables ! I thought they only made the small side nesting tables. Your coffee table choice to buy is very beautiful. Soft edges, the lower one for Kamari and big enough to hold lots of stuff. And stuff is coming your way! Stay pretty! 🥰🤗

Everything matches white Malou! Wood, stone, marble, metal, glass- your options are endless and really depends on the other finishes in the space. I love how wood can warm up just about any room 😍
Ooh an additional comment from me, a furniture piece I'd love advice on would be bunk beds or sofa beds... or any way of adding additional sleeping capacity to a small house when I host a lot? But obviously I want to keep it stylish and not feeling cramped or tailored to children's sleep overs!
Hello Julie, I’m stuck on which type of color coffee table. White walls, small split level home, beige sofa and love seat with grey and white curtains. Also, dark brown wood floors with a grey and white area rug. I’m thinking cream color or black wood. What do you think? I don’t know if this matters, but I line in the country.
What a great video! Im having the hardest time choosing a table. We have two 91” dark cognac leather couches in an L shape. Opposite one couch is a velvet square armed chair is a deep teal. The media consoles we like are kind of mid century style in a medium wood. I feel Like I should get a coffee table and end table in another material besides brown wood but don’t know what to get.
Julie, I would like to attach a photo of my space to get your opinion on what coffee table would work and look best. I have Palladian blue walls ( benjamin Moore) cream couch and light blue swivel chairs. I have a brass and glass table for setting down drinks on one end and a solids dark wood end table on opposite end. What finishes/shape table would you choose? My space is quite small, only measures 3’x5’ in front of sofa and fireplace hearth. Thanks!

I get the sizing, but I'm still stumped...We are doing a Parisian style home and in our living room we have: two traditional rolled arm sofas opposite each other, and a Bergere chair as an accent chair with a side table by the accent chair. We are looking for something rectangular, oval, or nesting. We also have a child- so marble is out. Should we do wood? I love the West Elm pedestal table you showed (and our home has a lot of light) but I wonder if it will look bulky and clunky next to the Bergere accent chair and the two traditional sofas... Help please!
From what you’re describing, the pedestal table is too chunky for the more traditional/ antique lines of the furniture. I would opt for oval to soften up the space. Why not marble or natural stone with kids? You can seal the top yourself with a top coat from the hardware store so it’s impenetrable and easy to maintain. It’s so easy to apply- a small quart would suffice. Wood would be nice as well, but consider how much wood you already have in the space and go for something contrasting in finish.

I’ve just noticed that they have become so popular, like all of a sudden every design guru is adding one somewhere in the kitchen or in the living/dining room again…sometimes dome shaped on top or now black steel and glass is so popular. The reclining portion extends out an additional 20" from the front edge of the sofa. Any suggestion on how much space I should allow in front of the sofa? Would you recommend a movable coffee table? Thank you Julie for all the great tips!!! Love all your recommendations. For my living room, I bought the Pacific Bench 3-Piece L-Shaped Sectional with Wood Legs from C&B. The length is 110” by 110” so if it’s half then the size of the coffee table should be 55” but I couldn’t find anything in this size for round coffee table. I am eyeing on the Oasis Round Wood Coffee Table also from C&B which is 39.5” width and 39.5” depth. Do you think they will work out? Thanks and have a great day!!!
My measurements are just a rule to scale your furniture proportionately, but of course you can always go more or less Lisa! 48”D would work well if there are no other chairs in the space. 39.5” is great if you have an accent chair facing this sectional 👍🏻

If the oval is too large, I would suggest nesting tables Mystica. That way, you can tuck one underneath the other to free up space. Shape is up to what your seating group dictates. Good luck!

Much needed, thanks. There's so much more advice out there on styling the table than on choosing it in the 1st place. Especially appreciate the height rule. As a stopgap, currently placing drinks on a 28" C table & it's super awkward.
Height is never considered unless it’s awkward, then it becomes the main issue 😂

My partners so clumsy, and all of these are so beautiful. Great video as always. I’d love a video on creating a work space at home if you have time please? I have moved all the clutter from the spare room which took a full week of 3 hours per day. And need a small desk and chair for a laptop and and anything else y feet 10 yo u think would be useful . My job is on my feet 10 hours a day in retail and I’m switching to working from home and want to make the space feel comfy enough to not keep getting up and moving. A place to focus and also be at peace. And I already have dozens of plants . Thanks Julie xxx

Great tip about the Pinterest search. I am amazed how awesome coffee tables are, they are so beautiful. Great choices! I would love a video about headboards and bed frames. My bedroom is very small but I would love a tall headboard with a high bed frame so I can organize some stuff under the bed. I’m not sure if the large headboard is a design mistake or a good idea.

Julie, I would like to attach a photo of my space to get your opinion on what coffee table would work and look best. I have Palladian blue walls ( benjamin Moore) cream couch and light blue swivel chairs. I have a brass and glass table for setting down drinks on one end and a solids dark wood end table on opposite end. What finishes/shape table would you choose? My space is quite small, only measures 3’x5’ in front of sofa and fireplace hearth. Thanks!

I get the sizing, but I'm still stumped...We are doing a Parisian style home and in our living room we have: two traditional rolled arm sofas opposite each other, and a Bergere chair as an accent chair with a side table by the accent chair. We are looking for something rectangular, oval, or nesting. We also have a child- so marble is out. Should we do wood? I love the West Elm pedestal table you showed (and our home has a lot of light) but I wonder if it will look bulky and clunky next to the Bergere accent chair and the two traditional sofas... Help please!

From what you’re describing, the pedestal table is too chunky for the more traditional/ antique lines of the furniture. I would opt for oval to soften up the space. Why not marble or natural stone with kids? You can seal the top yourself with a top coat from the hardware store so it’s impenetrable and easy to maintain. It’s so easy to apply- a small quart would suffice. Wood would be nice as well, but consider how much wood you already have in the space and go for something contrasting in finish.

I’ve just noticed that they have become so popular, like all of a sudden every design guru is adding one somewhere in the kitchen or in the living/dining room again…sometimes dome shaped on top or now black steel and glass is so popular. But they’re extremely expensive so would love to see your ideas on which ones are the best and can even be moved around from room to room over time.

Perfect timing! I recently purchased a reclining sofa for our family room and now I'm on the hunt for a coffee table. The reclining portion extends out an additional 20" from the front edge of the sofa. Any suggestion on how much space I should allow in front of the sofa? Would you recommend a movable coffee table?
