I’ve been to several Junior Brown shows and he’s always amazing. When he plays, he wants you to hear trains, sirens, trucks and the occasional disgruntled old girlfriend when he plays. He plays with passion and a love for entertaining. I’ll always recommend seeing him live if given a chance.
Saw him live as a warmup act for Bob Dylan in the mid two thousands standing right in front of him in the front row and Jr blew the roof off the stadium and there wasn’t even a roof on the stadium .
Do NOT try to compete with a guitar player that plays a “guit-steel” guitar with a “flat” pick, 2nd finger “finger” pick, and 3rd finger “finger” pick at the SAME time….
Same. Never heard of him and a fellow player said Junior was one of his favorite players. At that time, JB had just come out with My Wife Thinks You’re Dead, and had a few other tunes featuring his unique blistering riffs. I was hooked!
Yes, he's a man of many licks ... I've heard him even play like Albert King, not for a whole song of course, but just enough to prove that he's got a good set of ears and isn't just a country player.
I have seen Jr Brown 3 times in small clubs in Cinti. Wow balls to the walls shows! Playing thru 2 Vintage Silverface Twin Reverbs that were tilted back & covered with thick blankets! During the Hendrix medley he broke the high E on the Tele & changed it while still playing & NEVER missed a beat! I looked around the room, people with mouths open in disbelief to what they just witnessed!! JR BAD TO THE BONE!! TELEMEISTER for sure!
Saw Junior years ago opening for The Mavericks.... blew them out of the water. I’d never heard of him but since that day, I’ve been a big fan! He is original and SHREDS like no other🤙🏼!!
"I can't even....." Really? You can't even comprehend or even keep up with Junior Brown? What a surprise! JB is an absolute master, brings tears to my eyes how skilled he is, listen over and over, thank you JB!
Good lord, Phish, Grateful dead, Sturgill Simpson and now Junior Brown. This channel is my spirit animal. If he does a video on Dickey Betts I may just have to walk into the woods and never come out....
@@Guitargate check out Jimmy Herring after Dickey Betts. After all, he replaced Dickey when the Allmans fired him, and he found the role hard because Dickey was his hero, but he got to team up with Derek Trucks in front of 20,000 a night playing Allman Brothers with Zambi licks thrown in. Then he moved on to the classic Phil Lesh Quintet for a five year stint that included three years as the Dead's lead guitarist.
The biggest sound I have ever heard from a 3 piece band when I saw him. He had a bass player and a drummer, who did not have a kick drum. But there was a bass drum sound coming from his bass player. Dude is a monster.
Junior calls it a "Guit-Steel" - his original yellow guitsteel (more or less a Tele and an 8 string Lap steel) wired to switch between the two. He usually sets it on a modified stand. Anywho - he is a living legend - an absolute killer. The bending trick... @ 3:18 or so.. if you look( again ) he's previously ghost bended nearly 2 whole steps- you can see the G and D string rock a little bit as be nurses those last few bendy notes
Junior Brown is so cool! Always loved Highway Patrol. I can't help but wonder what Mark Lindsay and the late Keith Allison would think of his version of Freeborn Man.
I visited a friend in Texas about 27 years ago. He took me to the Gypsie TeaRoom to see Junior Brown. What a treat, because In VA I had never heard of him, My friend surprised me again, with a gift, “12 shades of Brown”. I still have it in my CD player in my truck, love it!
Wait till you here him go into Hendrix and then roll into the steel guitar and back into Hendrix. Junior is definitely a genius on guitar. Never heard of him before and he plated at Midtown Music Fest in Atlanta in the early 90s and he blew all the other bands away.
Jr. Brown, is a personality. Custom made instrument for for all his Trix and his Hybrid Country style music. A True musician. Writes, Sings, plays two instruments at the same time and is the Star in his life. A hard act to follow. Props.
Haven’t watched this yet, but I’m so happy to see Junior Brown on your channel. I had the pleasure of having his two Twins melting my face right in front of me. Not sure my ears recovered, but such a glorious sound.
I don't know that he 100% intends to know every note in a show piece like this, but I do know for 100% fact that he *can* play note for note. His parents were classical musicians and he was classical guitar trained, and transferred that to Surf Guitar - which is strongly flamenco oriented. He can totally flaunt the rules so expertly because he knows how to play in total control - and chooses not to.
JB is awesome. The song Michael featured here is a cover version of Jimmy Martin - "Freeborn Man" from 1969 which is in itself well worth a listen. Junior's album "12 shades of Brown" is really great including studio version of "Freeborn Man" and a few tunes that sound more like Johnny Cash than Johnny Cash does. Every song on the album is killer and being English I don't normally relate to country but it's one of my favourite albums. I don't know how I'd not heard of him til about 6 months ago?
I can certainly understand why this fella would think that Junior's playing is a lot of improv. But I have seen Junior many times over the years and he is quite consistent with his style. I recommend listening to his studio recordings to truly understand that his style remains consistent. The guy is brilliant.
I've had the pleasure of seeing Junior Brown several times. He's a world class player. And check out his blues playing. It's literally like Albert King. You can tell he was a King fan.
Sadly Junior Browns "Guit-Steel" was stolen last summer a few towns over from me in Attleboro MA. Apparently the "Guit-Steel" and his wifes acoustic guitar were left in there van overnight and stolen! I never heard if they were recovered or not..... Amazing player...
I saw Jr Brown about 25 years ago, in the Gypsy Tea Room, very small, up close and personal. I have the CD my friend gave me, I listened to it so much, I can sing along with it to this day. I could never play like him, so not even going there, lol. I love the way he uses another picking finger in there too. I love to watch him to this day, thanks
That BAND kicked ass, too - The lady on rhythm guitar was a machine, the drummer's kit was A SNARE (!) and the bassist was a mind reader, always there but never in the way. Bold REACTION video, Bro!
Junior is the total package! He's a brilliant, exceptionally creative player, a terrific entertainer, and he has a very good voice. IF he had been a straight up rocker, he would be famous. But he has a tremendous reverence for old style country music, and yet he's mastered the are of playing Hendrix licks, etc. within a country context, or whatever genre of music he's putting in his blender in any given moment. Probably one reason why his videos feature comedy - as he's hard to market for any one particular genre.
Love Junior, got to interview him when I was with NAMM in Nashville. That axe is his mind child he calls a Guitsteel, many songs he switches back and forth. He gets that bite because he leaves the steel finger picks on, as he needs ‘‘em for the lap steel, and no time to take those on and off, that steel on steel is what gives him that bite. He’s a Ernest Tubb singer that also loved Jimmy Hendrix. 🎉

The best delivery of a story i have ever heard, was a story told by a late friend of mine about the time he went to go see one of Jr's shows. Until the day I die, I hope I will carry it with me. Until we meet again, RIP Yancey.
Junior Brown is a freak of nature! I saw him about 20 years ago in Kalamazoo Michigan. Holy shit , what a trip. First time I heard Junior Brown was in 96 when he released "Semi Crazy". Several friends who played guitar had no explanations for "I Hung It Up".
Me, too.

There’s a reason for that, he’s a chronic public masturbator and quite frankly a tremendous piece of shit
Source, I’ve worked with him
He’s such a bada$$ , he invented the guit steel aka guitar/steel guitar in one.
Why isn't this man more famous?! Pure talent!
