- In this video I analyze the scariest movie scene that I have ever seen in my life, the introduction of The Moonlight Man in the 2017 Netflix film Gerald's Game, based on Stephen King's novel of the same name. This scene is truly terrifying, and one that truly freaks me out. So I decided to take a look at what happens in the scene, and exactly what it is that makes it so scary.

Hereditary, Texas chain massacre , The Purge: Anarchy (only bec of that chilling announcement at the very start) and Midsommar 🥲
Midsommar overall was pretty creepy , too many "wtaf" scenes to talk abt 😭
Insidious was really unsettling, especially the famous jumpscare had me having nightmares for weeks

the way he recognizes her from the events of the movie, and clearly is recalling fond memories like seeing an old friend adds to the sickening factor

Also the way Joubert mockingly says "You're not real, you're only made of moonlight" was creepy too.
In the book the Joubert was a normal man who happened to be tall and was a cold hearted psycho killer. The movie version he’s slightly more sympathetic, he seems like a mentally disabled man who had a hard life and was usually met with revulsion and hatred. He seemed excited to see her in the courtroom like she was an old friend, perhaps she was the only person who ever met him without revulsion and hostility.

What fucks with me the most is that in the trial scene the moonlight man actually looks pleasantly surprised to see Jessie, as if they are old acquaintances who happen to run into each other after a long time. This whole exchange suggests that Joubert has no comprehension of the gravity of his actions. His entire demeanour is surprisingly childlike, as if he sees murder and mutilation as an innocent game...
Completely agree! His reaction is so unsettling. I would definitely expect him to come off as more evil and sinister. It’s weird how happy he is. Also the part where he breaks the handcuffs freaks me out so much
Given the nature of his crimes and his characterization, it seems likely he was based off real life criminal Ed Gein (Who also inspired Psycho) for whom the sentence of "not guilty by reason of insanity" was codified.
It’s just an underdeveloped brain, believe it, there are ppl out there like this

The Moonlight Man, and the tall man from "It Follows", contributed to a lot of sleepless nights for me. There's just something so viscerally terrifying about those scenes

Whats even scarier is that at the end it explains that he is a serial killer, that eats dead body’s, cuts genitals off of corpses and keeps them, has intercourse with corpses, and breaks into houses snd watches people sleep. And he was based on a real serial killer (ed gein). But whats even scarier is that they made him a metaphor for death

Ed gein didn’t break into people houses and watch them sleep and he also didn’t the bodies of the people he killed he tried to make a skin suit of his mom and had various “trophies he made” but he never ate them and he never claimed to have intercourse with any of them either. He’s only convicted of 2 (he was suspected of 7) but most of his mutilated body parts came from grave robbing.
'but then she falls asleep.' the way you transition into the next section/topic is what makes it absolutely horrifying. the narration is top tier

I encourage everyone who liked the movie to read the novel. I can assure you that the scene in the book is every bit as terrifying as it is in the film. King at his absolute finest.
ryanmueck832-I read the book years ago when I was a teenager, & you're definitely not wrong, it's terrifying. That whole part of the book involving the moonlight man was like something out of your worst nightmares, especially with that reveal at the end. When I saw the movie & it got to that ending, I felt every bit as creeped out as I felt when I got to that part of the book.
THE FACT THAT WHEN YOU GAVE A WARNING THAT THERE WOULD BE A JUMP SCARE.. AND THE ONLY THING THAT GAVE ME A JUMP SCARE WAS THE PAUSE SOUND ☠️
I totally agree with you, seeing him in the room like that absolutely scared the balls out of me. I have to give a recommendation, the Exorcist. The scene where he's dreaming and sees the demon face has always stuck with me and scares the shit out of me.

what makes this scary is that the dog never entered the house, the only time you saw the dog was at the start of the movie, after the start the dog is either only a hallucination or possibly the moonlight man who she just thinks is the dog.

amazing video! I love how you said that realistic events in horror movies are the scariest, since I agree. I’ve watched movies like the ring, IT, that one about the horror nun (sorry can’t remember the name) etc… but the absolute most terrifying scenes in those are nothing compared to watching something that could happen and then being paranoid for the following days ahah

I remember watching this film with my dad a few years back. It was quite the experience. Quite happy to see that the film still has its spot!
I will be honest, the ending felt a bit disappointing. i agree with the notion that realistic horror is way scarier than supernatural/etc however I think movie would’ve left more of a terrifying impact if the audience were left guessing. scatter the clues that the moonlight man might be real, might be not and leave the audience forever wondering - well is he? but that’s just my opinion, tbh, I found the scene you discussed utterly uncomfy and creepy when i watched it. excellent video! love your one terrifying scene series!

I feel like that would have been good in some ways but rob the movie if it’s themes, specifically standing up against abusers who the moonlight man represents
I gotta say it was super disturbing to hear him say “you’re not real” to Jess at the end; the idea that this man is so deranged that he views one of his victims as a figment of his own imagination is horrendous and even more horrendous is the idea that people that mentally broken exist in the world
@@DG_TotiHey! I'm pretty sure he was just repeating what she had said when they were back at the house. Like, "Hey, you're that woman who said to me, 'You're not real! '", which to me was a way of showing his simple-mindedness and telling viewers, "Yup, this was the same guy. This is the moonlight man. The supposedly figurative man in the house. And he's real."

This and your video on Inside really has me sold on the idea of cinematic darkness. It's such a powerful tool, as somebody with visual snow, dark spaces have this extra scary element to me. I really have a difficult time telling depth in darkness, so I used to be terrified of it as a kid, even as a teenager it was frightening. It's that tension of peering into the unknown, desperately hoping that your eyes don't fail you, that you see nothing, but you can't be sure, and that's the horrifying part.

I love the horror genre. Stephen King is my favorite author ever!!! I have seen the Human Centipede films, all of the Saw films, and many other disturbing horror films. The Moonlight Man has so far been the one thing that made me actually sleep with my light on. Knowing in the end he was a real person watching her sleep and appearing to her was just SCARY x 10^10 !!!!

Dude, you and I got the same taste in movies. I have watched thousands of horror movies, but this particular scene scared the shit out of me. I wondered about it for days, which i usually don't do once i am done with a movie . But yeah, man! this was scary as hell.

I think it’s silly to say there was “no external threat” until the moonlight man, and therefore wasn’t scary til then. The initial rape scene is pretty terrifying, and the growing realisation that Jess might starve to death is also terrifying.
The way in which the moonlight man becomes interweaved with her trauma of the eclipse, like an impersonation of it, gives me chills.

The movie where a petrified man was dug up. The truck driver hauling the artifact got strangled somehow and the truck crashed. When it was finally put in a museum a woman snuck in at night to sketch it. As the entombed man was lying on his back and facing up she sketched. As she finished she looked up and the head was facing her. Me and my younger brother got in the same bed as was our custom whenever a Saturday night horror movie really scared us.

Well done, you know I’ve only just discovered your work, but I have to say that you have something here. Oftentimes with TH-camrs just starting, this is assuming you have zero prior experience with making videos/ writing scripts/essays/etc, there is a noticeable raw element and lack of refinement that suggests they may be talented but need to keep practicing. This is not something I see with you, if you’ve never done this before, you have a high level of proficiency in creating these videos and the ability to think critically about movies and the various scenes therein. One movie that had me terrified when I was young was Black Narcissus. Actually not the movie as a whole (it's not a horror movie) but one character, Sister Ruth - as she evolves into madness.

The scariest scene in that book wasn’t the moonlight man but when the father appeared at her door after jizzing on her underwear. I put the book down. Luckily I eventually finished the book and the moonlight mans’ appearance was a serious shock. I didn’t get the Delores Clairborne angle about the eclipse.
