One Terrifying Scene - Annie’s Possession in Hereditary

- In this video, I analyze what I think is the scariest scene from the 2018 A24 horror movie Hereditary, directed by Ari Aster. Hereditary is one of the best and most memorable horror movies I've ever seen, as its great storytelling and disturbing imagery left me unsettled throughout the entire film. But there's one sequence in particular that I will never forget. One that made me question what I was even watching. And that's Annie's possession at the end of the movie. In this episode of "One Terrifying Scene", I talk about what makes Annie's possession in Hereditary truly terrifying.

Toni Collette not getting an Oscar nomination for her performance in Hereditary will go down as one of the biggest snubs in history. She not only deserved a nomination, but she deserved a win as well. It is one of the greatest performances across any genre in movie history.
Agreed! She was amazing in this
@@trayclancyloving the videos by the way. I’d love to connect and talk shop.
She was absolutely incredible and I totally bought her performance. She felt like a real person, not an actress.
fuck the oscars give appreciation to those (like she in this movie) who deserve it, share it, talk about it.
so true
Another thing that i really like about this scene is through Peter's POV, he just believes that his mom is trying to kill him due to what happened to Charlie. He never learns about the cult until last second. And that is terrifying to think about as well.
Great point
Technically he never fully realizes that since there last scene of him is him possessed, his soul is gone therefore it’s not him realizing it.
@@emilianoyaboi5911I'm pretty sure he realized when he saw his mom floating and naked cult members.
@@Ely-zf4ytStarting floating and sawed her own head off
@@DeathnoteBBdamn I thought everyone’s mom did that
The head banging got me more than the naked man, a naked man can be fought off. I was expecting her to bang with her hands and the movement appeared very unnatural. Also her other movements like when she ran at him or crawled through the air were much slower, but the cadence of the head banging was performed at inhuman speeds sending chills down my spine.
So her crawling through the air wasn’t enough for you to understand that your fighting something fuckn supernatural
@@kalebanth8323 I mean her crawling through the air is not something I see everyday, but it did not make me feel spooked.
I totally agree with you! Those few moments are truly terrifying.
I've had this reoccurring dream which terrifies me so much I wake up feeling cold all over. The dream is something like me having a slow day, everything and everyone are doing their own thing in a normal pacing but suddenly everyone is moving at a fast speed, without any build ups at all. I don't know but that creeps me out so much, probably because I don't have the time to process why everything is at 5x the usual speed, it's the same feeling of when someone is chasing you but they're much faster than you and you didn't even realize that they already caught up to you.
@@kalebanth8323 the crawling in the air made me laugh actually, the rest of it was well done but i dunno that one bit was funny
The ONE THING I will never forget about this movie is just how dread filled it was. Most horror movies at least give you some hope even if the protagonist dies in the end. There was not a single point in this movie where I thought it was going to be a happy ending. I was so uncomfortable. Also, technically they couldn’t kill the dude cause they would’ve messed up the vessel for Paimon.
The moment the incident happened after they left the party I knew this movie was gonna end badly.
Yeah that’s what I tell everyone that haven’t seen it was that it makes you super uncomfortable throughout the whole movie and there’s just no hope in it at all lol one of the best horror movies hands down
it was pure evil and misery. The darkness of the mood was suffocating, right within the first 20 minutes
Exactly! The fact that evil wins at the end is why i love it so much. It's so unexpected and awful feeling. A perfect horror ending.
Exactly! Not ONCE did I have a feeling of hope or even feel that the movie would progress in a positive manner😭it just was a horrible movie in an AMAZING way of course but that feeling watching the movies is something I never want to feel again lol. A24 is amazing when it comes to the horror genre
This movie’s impact on the horror genre in general cannot be understated. Talk to Me, Skinamarink, and even big blockbusters like Smile and Malignant take so much from this film.
A classic
I'm sorry but how Hereditary has influenced these films exactly?
@@dionatasmartins4719i guess because there was a huge boom in psychological horror after hereditary since it actually did really well in the box office so a lot more movies of that kind started getting released in the subsequent years
@@dionatasmartins4719 ...lol is this a serious question?? They copied Hereditary. When things start ramping up in the movie and Peter is in class and Paimon POSSESSES Peter (takes over his body when Peter's hand jolts up in a deformed way and the teacher thinks he's just simply raising his hand). The possessor takes the vessel (aka Peter) and slams his face down on the desk more than once harming him and disfigurement (breaking his nose). Talk to Me had an evil dead soul POSSESS Riley's body and SLAM HIS FACE AGAINST A HARD SURFACE harming Riley, cause blood and disfigurement. This came from Hereditary.
@@wellthissucks112inspired? yes. copied? no.
I think another aspect that adds to the whole scariness of Annie’s possession is that her character is often defined by her strong willed and head strong traits, meaning it was very jarring for us to watch her slowly lose control and slip into that boundless demonic state
Good point
So true. Like it was only at the end when she was banging her head and everything that it hit me that she was possessed.
She was mostly strong wild but very vulnerable & reacted on emotion too much even though she’s a girl she flipped her shit too much it was expected
@@emilianoyaboi5911What does being a woman have to do with anything?
"head strong" -- good pun
Overwhelming is definitely the right word. I've never felt so far out in deep waters then while watching this movie. The speed of the violent shift this movie takes was nearly traumatic
Hell yes. Only seen this film once when it was initially released, but I remember every single second like it just finished watching it.
Midsommar is worse
@@emilianoyaboi5911 I watched Midsommar, tbh it was slightly more traumatic but Hereditary was more scary if that makes sense
What makes the ending special is that we are desperately trying to escape the terror Peter is experiencing in the house. When he eventually does, and succumbs to Paimon, you feel a sense of relief. Even though Peter is a demon king and Annie's headless body is floating into the treehouse, you feel better. The ethereal score and religious imagery are almost like you've entered a twisted fairytale and are now heralding the arrival of Paimon as well
👌
omg this is exactly what i thought about the ending
Somebody on reddit described the music at the end to feel like "having a panic attack on a sunrise" and I think that fits perfectly.
@@YTHeroesI also heard "a sunrise in hell"
For me i actually thought to myself “Oh thank fuck Peter himself doesn't have to go through this anymore”
I think Annie chasing Peter into the attic wasn’t trying catch him but more to lure him up there for what needed to happen next. If Annie wanted to catch him she could have.
uh, yeah pretty sure that's the point.
The only thing I don't understand is why there are two Annies at the end. One chases him into the attic and another is decapitating herself with the piano wire - why are there two?
@@roganroberts8789there actually the same person, how she got up there so fast we may never know
@@Ncgrizz Or how she got up there at all - Peter locked her out.... I guess we can put it down to witchcraft but it does kind of dilute the tension of that final scene when it doesn't make sense
@roganroberts8789 yeah my best guess on that would just be that at that point she's possessed so it's just the demon doing demon shit, appearing out of nowhere. Lol
What I love most about this movie is that it doesn't rely on cheap jump scares, or really that many conventional scares at all. Instead it slowly turns up the anxiety until you feel like you can't take it anymore. That dinner scene was the standout for me. I felt like my heart was going to explode.
It has the best kind of scares IMO. Jump scares are usually worthless, as the tension releases instantly, and was often done too soon, thus wasting any potential for actual suspense.
What I like about this film is that even though it doesn't rely on jump scares, there still ARE jump scares, just placed at the right time.
Exquisite soundtrack and soundscaping too.
I remember when I first watched this movie, it was a friend's house who live out in the country. We got done watching at around 12:30-1:00ish in the morning and I had to drive home by myself. I never felt more uncomfortable, anxious, or paranoid in my life than on that drive home
I hate driving alone at night after movies like this lol
Oh hell no, I'm sleeping in the sofa heck even in the floor. I'm not driving in the country at night after a movie like this, hell no.
Same only my friends didn't live out in the country, they were just like 45-50 min away 😅 it was 2 am and I was seriously doing everything I could to distract my brain. I put on emperor's new groove once I got home to chill my ass out 🤣🤣
Why didn’t you just stay the night at that point lol
I do sleep alone in my room
When I watched this together with my sister and my niece, our ceiling is nearly identical to their ceiling which makes it more fucked up. Then there is an attic in my room as well which horrified me for entire month I guess.
It didn't also helped that their is an abandoned house in front of ours, and we watched it during pandemic.
We were watching so many horror movies during the pandemic which seems boring for us (cause we got immuned to boring horrors) but Hereditary is the biggest exception.
Something I noticed my second time watching was, once Annie is possessed she is desperate to get her head off her body for the ritual. It makes the head banging even more gruesome to think she's just trying to get the darn thing off.
what i love the most about this movie is, that you don't know until about the last third of the movie, if they are really getting possessed or if it's just a deeply disturbed family
Annie swimming away in the air is an image that is gonna haunt me forever. The finale of this movie is incredible.
Broke the tension for me pretty hilarious looking
@@ngonzales3781yeah. 100% goofball moment.
Yeah that shit left shivers down my spine I've never experienced before.
Seems its a 50/50 thing. I remember a lot of people in my theater laughing
I thought it was accidentally hilarious. Everything else was messed up.
annie got yassified
😂😂
And don’t even get my started on the “reborn” score in the final scene. Not only r we greeted with just ungodly amounts of disturbing imagery, the score completely solidifies the uneasiness and unholiness of it all
Score is nuts
Aster really just slapped "10 Hour Relaxation and Meditation Music" into his movie
The shot of the naked man in the doorway has stuck with me ever since I saw the movie back in 2018. The entire movie disturbed me, but something about the guy being completely naked and doing nothing but standing there and smiling at Peter is so uncanny and unsettling. That image is burned into my brain forever.
Same lol
the naked people were the only thing that creeped me out
He’s just standing there….menacingly
Same with me, but not with this movie. The movie this happened with me is Sleepaway Camp. At the very end the main girl standing motionless, naked (revealing she's actually a boy), and making the most unnerving sound while holding a knife. Freaked me the fuck out.
@@mookyyzed2216do you mean the ending scene where her mouth is wide open ? if so than yeah same can’t get it out of my mind 😭
I love that clip you use in the beginning of Annie’s horror then the switch.Toni’s acting with her expression s is so cool. Her acting throughout that movie is insane and phenomenal.
So good
Ari Aster instinctively knows what really scares people. Both Hereditary and Midsommar creeped me the f#*k out, not just temporarily, but for weeks after. They're both way up in my top 10 all time favorite horror movies. However, nothing beats out Martyr's!
My friend described this as "The best horror movie I will never, ever watch again."
I completely agree.
Indeed it is
That headbanging to the ceiling is one of the scariest things ive seen in movies.
I felt physical pain sometimes watching this movie
You hit the nail on the head with what I thought when first seeing this scene. The horror in the film up until this final scene is very psychological and based in reality. We have never seen how the demons move, how they act, what they do. We are so helpless and mortified to discover the true nature of the demons until it is too late. The shot of Annie almost swimming out of the room struck a chord in me on my first viewing; I've never felt so unnerved. And then the incessant banging on the attic door with her head was the cherry on top. They are both two of the scariest and my personal favorite shots in horror cinema.
This film truly changed my life. CHANGED MY LIFE. I'll never be able to watch any type of film the same way again because I'm not sure they'll be able to match the absolute master filmmaking of Ari Aster.
Well said! Definitely a classic
The Dark and the Wicked was up there with this movie. Movie had me thinking about it for days
“this, is so fucked” killed me
Toni Collette was completely overlooked for an Oscar in this movie. Brilliant acting. Horror movies are so undervalued in terms of creativity, influence, and great performances. For example, directors such as Quinton Tarantino, Mike Flanigan, Guillermo del Toro and others have gushed about what a huge influence the movie Evil Dead 2 had on them, particularly Sam Raimi's innovative camera work. Other than Silence of the Lambs, which one could argue was not really a horror movie, I can't think of any other "scary" movies that have been recognized by the establishment recently. Rosemary's Baby & the Exorcist both had multiple nominations back in the late 60s/early 70s.
Agreed, she was so good in this
This movie was an ongoing barrage of traumatic scenes while also delving deeper into themes like grief, trauma and guilt. Till date the best horror film I've seen.
This is by far the most terrifying film ever made. I’ll never forget seeing this in theaters and being legitimately traumatized afterwards. It was a very odd feeling. It was like trauma mixed with the feeling of impressed astonishment from how effective the horror is channeled through that film to the audience. Seeing it is a very unique experience that I highly recommend.
You’re full of shi….traumatized by a movie. Get a life…
Real cinema!
The head sawing scene still terrifies me to this day... Great video!
So insane. Thank you!!
Holy F I forgot about that scene until I hit this comment and the part in the video simultaneously. I almost puked. Scariest moment
I had a hard time sleeping for a few nights because of that scene lmao
The sound 😭
I was a fairly new parent when my wife and I went to see this in theaters. All the stuff around the daughter's death and the crippling grief that would come with it, really, really messed us up. We shed some tears in the theater and couldn't wait to get back to our son. I've been into horror since around 6 years old, I'm 30 now, and this is probably the scariest most unsettling movie I've ever seen. I respect others opinions but have a hard time understanding how this didn't strike a chord with them. I own it on bluray and tell my wife often, I want to watch it again. But talk myself out of it because I don't want to put myself through that discomfort again. Great video and breakdown.
Thank you so much! I hadn’t seen it for a second time until I made this video lol

As a horror movie lover, I’ve seen all kinds of movies but this movie was the only one that literally kept me up all night. I couldn’t sleep after seeing Annie just silently stalking in the corner and swimming through the air. Also I kept hearing that god damn clicking that the sister did. Scary stuff
SAME, i literally just stared at the ceiling all night trying to process what i saw

@@barebuttspankin it’s just the type of psychological horror, normal people acting weirdly freaks me out, so that’s why it scared me xD

Although it is believed that peter died when jumping out of the window he doesn't actually die. In the script he is weakened from the fall and for paimon to possess someone they need to be in a weakened state. The shadow you see is annie's headless corpse flying over to the treehouse.
I thought paimon finally possessed Peter because he was fully broken like psychologically and mentally after seeing everything that was going on
The scene where Peter says Mommy as she slams her head against the ceiling is maybe the darkest I’ve seen in cinema
My favorite thing about the reveal of the naked figure in the doorway is that it's a payoff of a scene from the beginning of the story. Charlie happened to see a man at her grandmother's wake, looking down at her with a distinct, almost aggressive smile. So distinct, in fact, that he's recognizable even in the dark, without a closeup. The cult first targeted Charlie for the ritual, but now that Peter is alone and all the pieces are in place, this creep is back and giving that same unnerving smile. This man has now been confirmed as a member of the grandmother's cult, and Peter is now officially on a countdown toward his own possession.
Right!
but on a side realistic note poor dude. imagine the actor himself now being seen like this. Like what if he just genuinely wants to smile and be nice to people in his life and anyone who knows him or doesnt know him but just recognizes him that saw the movie probably wont be able to unsee all that. lol
Going into this movie without any prior information about it is an experience I wish I could have again. The best horror movie of all time
Definitely wish I could watch it for the first time again

Due to a mixture of past injuries, medications, and mental health issues my memory isn't very good anymore. I struggle to remember things even minutes after hearing/reading/seeing them. I pray that you don’t have dementia, it’s a worse fate than what the people in hereditary suffered.
There's a great bit where you hear her pluck the piano wire out just before the attic
Damn I missed that, that’s dope
The finale of this movie kept me awake for hours into the night.
As someone who experienced loss at a young age, the psychological impact of the family’s grieving processing was horror enough. It was a slow burn expertly woven into the supernatural.
Demons are real and they can possess the psychologically broken.
Stay safe and keep that mind healthy.
Absolutely. It's mind boggling to me to realize that there's folks out there who believe demons don't exist!
@@ComedyBros5from a scientific perspective, they are not demons. Rather, they are beings from different dimensions that can access our current physical dimension. We encounter many types of these beings across the world. Not all of them are the same. Not all of them are malicious. Most are curious, most are just observing. But there are beings who are curious about our world that go to the extreme by possession. It’s theorized these beings don’t carry the same emotions we do. Their forms lack the amygdala because they don’t have a physical corporeal form like we do. But they are conscious. So they seek ours because they are curious and want to know what it’s like to feel. I could go on but from what I can say, we know there are multiple dimensions within our plane of universe. Just like we know we are not the only ones in space. There is life in OUR universe (Earth and beyond our solar system), and there is life OUTSIDE of our universe (multiverses, dimensions).
In summary, a multiverse encompasses the idea of multiple separate universes with different physical laws, while dimensions refer to the different aspects of reality, including the familiar three spatial dimensions and time, as well as potential extra spatial dimensions in certain theoretical models of physics. The study of both multiverses and dimensions explores the vast possibilities and complexities of the universe and our understanding of it, and the LIFE it contains.
There's no shiii like demons or angels, geeeszzz
The naked man smiling was also seen at Annie’s mother’s funeral. Just standing clothed this time with that same bizarre smile. What made this horror film a top notch winner was having actors like Toni Collette and Ann Dowd. They are two of my favorite actresses. That young girl is awesome too.
This is still my personal favorite horror movie of all time. The details are so intricate that it’s kind of unbelievable and it’s one of those rare movies where you genuinely notice new things every time you watch. It’s kind of incredible. People who like the movie but don’t like the end confuse me because the end was perfectly set up by every line and scene if you actually pick up on the details.

Hereditary is one of the best, most disturbing horror movies ever made in my opinion. It has never left me since i first saw it upon release. There are many shocking scenes filmed and acted brilliantly. If you "get" this film it you realise how terrifying and shocking it really is.
Your breakdown is top notch!
Thank you! Really appreciate it 🙏
Hereditary was horrifying. THAT scene was terrifying. Like the one where no one saw it coming.
But the acting was also superb. Annie was amazing and the shift in when she looks horrified but then is possessed was horrifying. Peter’s actor when he’s scared and terrified and calling Annie mommy. The absolutely vulnerability was heartbreaking.
Agreed!
It's like the most shocking thing for me was the beginning where they usually don't show the aftermath so like night passes but nope just straight up child's head on ground eaten by ants in daytime and the dread you feel when your mother is in the next room wailing because you might have accidentally killed her child. Like I didn't like the whole cliche demon bit but it is kind of scary at the end where the room is dark but you realize someone is in there with you
Crazy scene!
Your explanation and breakdown made these scenes even more scary.
The overall eerie atmosphere hereditary creates throughout the movie was amazing. It builds the tension slowly, not rushing it which makes it way better than other horror movies that only have jumpscares

The Winkie's scene, Body Snatchers dog, and Kairo ballet ghost - the exact combination I always mention when asked about creepy scenes.. they must share a flavor, I conclude.
This movie genuinely disturbed me. I honestly didnt even noticed annie in the corner of his room until I rewatched it once which made it way more scary.

i live for these
A jumpscare is the chapest scaring tactic used in the horror genre.
I really hope you do a video on the mystery man scene from Lost Highway. That is one seriously messed up scene, made even more unsettling by the fact that it's not even in a horror movie! It just comes completely out of left field and leaves you baffled.
The movie up to Annie banging on the cellar did such a good job at showing just how high it was from the ground. The family has to grab a long hook and even then stand on their tippy-toes. Straight up bone chilling scene.
Honestly my fav horror TH-camr rn
I love you
