Deftones and Tool are by far my favorite bands of all time. So much a like but also so much different. Both bands have gotten me through so much in my life!
I found Deftones in 1997 - I was seventeen. They became my favorite band. Still today nothing sounds like them and I appreciate the same things that I did when I was young. They really described my emotions in a way I could understand and express myself clearer. Thank you Deftones.
I love how Chino always sings odd notes of a scale. It’s the same thing as phrasing of jazz chords. I think that’s one thing that leads to the R&B feel(aside from the grooviness of the rhythm). He lands on a lot of 4th, 6th and 7th notes of a scale which gives it a unresolved feeling. With the soft breathy tone makes it so original.
Seen Deftones 8 times... I got drunk one show on my birthday weekend at the Orlando HOB and was right in front of Chi Cheng. Everyone was yelling Chino so every time it got quiet I would yell, Chi Cheng in the motherfuckin house! He kept pointing at me and smiling with his perfectly crooked teeth. a lot of those "nu metal/alternative metal" groups from the early 90s added rhythym and style to a genre that only had heaviness and aggression before.
A purist would also just say that's abomination. Purists look down their noses at Pantera. This is MORE metal-ish, but it is basically classic emotive hardcore.

Same here. When they love Tool and Deftones i get so happy.
This was my favorite tones album too. Still on my playlist today.
I found Deftones in 1997 - I was seventeen. They became my favorite band. Still today nothing sounds like them and I appreciate the same things that I did when I was young.
They really described my emotions in a way I could understand and express myself clearer.
Thank you Deftones.
The same as you...
🤘🏼
The song Knife Prty is one I think you'd guys love by Deftones...
Indeed Knife Party for sure
Knife party!!!!
the acoustic version on "Music in high places" is GREAT
They'd love it for sure!!
100%
I love how Chino always sings odd notes of a scale. It’s the same thing as phrasing of jazz chords. I think that’s one thing that leads to the R&B feel(aside from the grooviness of the rhythm). He lands on a lot of 4th, 6th and 7th notes of a scale which gives it a unresolved feeling. With the soft breathy tone makes it so original.
"Shout-out to everybody that's on the bass" rip Chi 😞
It was his birthday just the other day.
Joseph Ivy rip ❤️ 💪
Deftones just doesn't sound the same without Chi for some reason! You'll be missed
I had no idea that would be the last time I would ever be able to see him play live again. What an awesome memory, bass players don’t get enough love. Rest in paradise.
ozabobododo That sounds like an unforgetable moment! Thanks for sharing!I red somewhere Chi wasn't only a bass player, but also a played a BIG part in writing the lyrics together with Chino
FIRE.
Edit: I also jump on the Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) bandwagon
This was my first deftones song I ever heard and was hooked. Been waiting on you to finally hear this side of deftones
Stephen Thompson same here. It was the first song on The Matrix OST, if I remember right
Same
@@killerdove123 I'm not sure but my friend showed me this in like sophomore year of high school and I was blown away
Fun Fact, Deftones is from Sacramento that has a very diverse culture mix and strong respect for hip hop groove. I grew up there too. The mix of hard rock and groove beats is a reflection of the synergistic culture mix 💜
As a sac native, them being from here is something I take pride in lol.
@@JamminWithJer Rancho boy here.
@@RTWGraphics much love my 916 homie
This entire album is excellent, the title track is a favorite too. Great reaction!
Their first two, Adrenaline and Around the Fur, are still my favorites from them. Also their heaviest two albums.
Absolutely.
My Deftones listening increasingly trailed off on their later stuff. These two albums were amazing.
I specifically remember being embarrassed at a party in the 90's cuz I thought they were called "Death tones". Lol.
Any "metal purist" has to agree that Deftones were groove masters along with other late 90's bands.
No, deftones are pure shit and never metal. They are screamo pop rock
a lot of those "nu metal/alternative metal" groups from the early 90s added rhythym and style to a genre that only had heaviness and aggression before.
@@51-73-i6w Oh no not hardcore enough for you? What a badass dude
A purist would also just say that's abomination. Purists look down their noses at Pantera.
This is MORE metal-ish, but it is basically classic emotive hardcore.
Deftones are the best. They always growing with each album and I appreciate them for being good band. You can put "Nu" "Screamo" and anything you want in front of it and it doesn't change them. Like the show and gonna keep watching. Thanks guys
I’ll never forget high school in the 90s when they broke the scene in a big way
React to "Be Quiet and Drive" by Deftones!
Unorthdox Theory ill be so upset if this doesn’t happen
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome song
Yes you will dig it
My faaaavorite
Deftones - Knife Prty. Love the backing bass, fly drums, and crazy vocals...
That beginning! Could listen to it on a loop
That and digital bath are amazing
Hawaii acoustic version of knife party💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥👀👀👀
this song with the double vocals is crazy
Knife Prty is quintessential Deftones. It’s beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Nobody does that like Deftones.
Around the Fur is a perfect album
You're not lying.
They're all perfect
My favorite.
@horrendous agreed
Diamond eyes is better
I came across Deftones as a teenager and had one of those.. "omg, these guy's are making what's in my head" kinda moments. Like they where making music just for me 😂 You don't get that a lot in my experience. I'm 39 and still listen to them regularly 🤘❤️
Literally the same thing happened to me when I found this song, found it last week as well as the band itself and I'm already a fan
same thing for me. there are so many bands that i like a few of their songs or parts of their songs etc but never been a band where i like every song and every part of each song it’s amazing
Lol I was a teenager too, about 13 and it was very strange to keep it to myself that I find these songs so hot lmao
Yeah, echo the "they're making the music for me" feeling when I found Deftones a long, long time ago. I knew it the first time I heard it.
thats exactly how i feel with iron maiden. its like they make exactly what i want to hear :)
The song "Around the Fur" is still one of my favorite songs by anyone
Back in like 05 I was at a strip club and the dancer danced to that song. I was smitten lol

Chino's soft voice is heavily influenced by female vocalists like Sade. They even covered No Ordinary Love. He's also got a bit of HR from Bad Brains, Morrisey and Dave Gahan in there.
And the Mike Patton influenced screams too
Interesting, Sade is the only female singer I enjoy. I'll let her caress me into a bliss any day lol.
@@NK-bz9wb you should listen to something like slowdive and cocteau twins
@@Ok-tl1dv
thanks for the suggestions! I actually like a couple of Slowdive songs that I know and haven't heard of Cocteau Twins before, but I like what I heard so far.
i didn't know that! i love deftones and sade. explains why chino got a siren-like voice that i love lol
This is one of Deftones' best, glad you weren't put off by the chorus vocals
You know the track is good when Ryan and George don’t even read the lyrics 😂
Deftones are sick dude. Also pay attention to how good their songs SOUND. The production is always insane, especially the drum sound. Well done boys. You don’t have to explain shit. Deftones are consistent as hell. They always release new music and it’s always awesome 🤙🏼
Mmmmmmm that snare.
agreed on the drum sounds. the drummer is incredible but the sound engineering is always top notch too.
The producer on this album was the great Terry Date, who also has produced for Pantera, Soundgarden, incubus, Ozzy, Korn, Smashing Pumpkins.... Terry Date has his fingerprints all over 90s rock and metal.
Even as a diehard Deftones fan I have to admit that gore took me a while to get into
abe is one of my all time favorite drummers!!
David Moreno funny. Same here. It was definitely the most challenging record for me.
This song is the perfect example of how Deftones' sound really revolves around the whole "less is more" philosophy.
Also, RIP Chi

Deftones, System of a Down, ToOL, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Were some of my absolute favorite bands growing up!
You really not going to mention KORN 😳
@@SouLAssassin_ Omfg! You’re right, not sure how I can forget them! Fun fact: I actually caught Heads Pick at their LA show years back. Such an awesome band live. 🤘🏻

agreed. it's what i'm used to from deftones.
Yeah, 7 words is about the only other thing I can think of that would be better.
I think people that disagree are the new found Deftones fans.
Around the fur is one of my favorite albums of all time. Lots of bands tried to sound like that and ended up having a plastic flavor
Deftones is a band you have to see live. The energy is crazy. Dope ass performance.
chino´s vocals are terrible live, very rarely does he give a good performance, the rest of the band is dope!
@@gibo74 ive seen em live twice in the pit and its so loud you cant even hear his voice. the energy is face melting
absolutely. ive seen em 3 times n you are correct
Gi Bo cant agree more.

I’ve always described Deftones to potential listeners as such: picture yourself making love, in all its forms (fierce, slow, rough, gentle, etc), with the most sexiest person you could ever conjure up in your mind and yet no matter what happens or changes throughout the experience, said experience is always smooth and passionate. Can you try to imagine what that would sound like? Let me help you, listen to this... I play a song and they always, always fall so hard in love.
Deftones is a champagne sunset groove, for your soul
Just wanted to say, after watching you guys from the beginning, it has been awesome watching y'all grow in Metal. Your understanding has gone from curiosity to a pretty damned good grasp on what it is to be Metal. You've covered a ton of my my favorites and intro'd me to some new stuff as well. It's always entertaining to see new fans surprised by something you've enjoyed forever. Keep it up!
Chino Moreno is a great vocalist, heavily influenced by Depeche Mode and the Cure
And Morrissey
And Helmet.
And Duran Duran.
And pibes chorros
Bad Brains.
Best Deftones song you could’ve reacted to or Be quiet and drive (far away)
React to Refused - New Noise or Worms of the Senses, released the same year I think

around the fur is actually considered their masterpiece by many, and it was HUGE back in the day
first album I bought when I was 15 back in 97, love this band
Ive noticed 3 types of deftones fans. 45% think white pony is the best album, 45% think around the fur is the best album, and 10% think adrenaline is the best album.
for me its white pony but around the fur is not too far behind.
@@JungleScene White Pony in terms of just overall quality and production. Around the fur for me because it was the first deftones album I bought back in the day. I can stil remember driving around with my friends listening to it in the late 90s.

Deftones - Engine No 9. Even heavier and harder vocals, yet maintaining rap style sections.
Theres alot of cool stuff happening in Adrenaline, but the muddy production and mixing ruined alot of those songs imo.
