There was a GENUINE darkness to Layne Staley's vocals. He didn't sound like a guy "trying to sound dark". He sounded like a guy whose mind and heart often lived in a dark place.
He never could get past the death of the love of his life. He just kept driving the spike night after night and was taking the trip into Dopeland ... where I believe he was with her in some mysterious way. So Layne's Darkness was actually real.

FACT: Layne Staley recorded this vocal track only once, and not even on a formal take. The sound engineers unknowingly decided to keep the tape recording when Layne was singing his vocals over his headphones. Producer Dave Jerden heard it and decided to put it on the record. Legend has it, sound engineers working with Staley and Cantrell will keep the tapes rolling, because they'll never know when they hit a pot of gold during those random times.

@@OrgaNik_Music I can't speak to that specific story but several producers and sound engineers have told stories about how easy it was to record with layne. He often did songs in one take and made their lives easier compared to other rock singers from that era.

Cantrell is sorely underrated in his craftsmanship of this band. Layne was a monster singer, but Jerry was so great at setting the tone, and writing brilliant riffs. Killer band, even today.
Jerry is a great guitarist, but his vocal contributions are underrated. There are times when he’s harmonizing with Layne on Dirt and it’s almost spiritual. Those two together were unique and unmatched.
The song “Would?” was released BEFORE the album Dirt. It was on the soundtrack for the film “Singles”. It was a hit from the minute it was released. A timeless classic.

Nutshell is beautiful but it's basically Layne's premature suicide note. Be prepared for that one. But yeah, Dirt is basically an album of all filthy blues. If you're gonna do an album reaction for AIC, that's where to go.

I'm a little late to the party, but every time you mentioned the bass, I couldn't help but think how proud Mike Starr would've been to hear that. It always broke my heart that he struggled so hard with his own addictions and his overwhelming guilt over Layne's death. And after all that, seeing him on Celebrity Rehab was absolutely soul-crushing. They portrayed him as just another washed-up, has-been, and I think that the humiliation from that whole experience really just did him in. #fuckyoudoctordrew RIP Mike Starr. RIP Layne Staley.
Yeah, I 100% totally agree. They made the Celeb Rehab as a 'fly on the wall' + just watched people struggle (instead of making it where they actually gave people help). Like the celebs were trapped in a box just to be looked at. It was so saddening to see Mike Starr & Jeff Conaway not receive any assistance. You could see it in their eyes that CR wasn't even lifting 1 finger + was just sat back wanting ratings + delighting in their unhappiness. RIP Mike (and Jeff). [el'sda2].
DIRT is a once in a generation album. More appreciated now than it was in 1992. We were in the presence of greatness back then, but didn’t fully appreciate it. Staley and Cantrell in same band and same album. Magic.
I'm a Black man and I grew up listening to Santana and Bob Marley because that was what my parents played all the time in the house. By the time I was In middle school I was already into Alice in Chains and Smashing Pumpkins. Grunge,Classic rock, Goth, Metal, Electronic, Blues, I love it all. More Black parents out there should introduce Rock music to their kids at a young age.
Andrew Wood was the vocalist for Mother Love Bone, one of the early bands of the Seattle scene of the late 80s. He died of a heroine overdose around 1990, which had a huge impact on the bands in the Seattle scene in the time just before they started getting signed to major label deals. The personal connections between Seattle’s legendary groups from the 90s ran deep. AIC, Soundgarden, and members of Pearl Jam were all connected to and through A.W. I believe that this song was for and about him (with the spelling changed to “Would?”) Amazing song by an incredible band.

Guys ,if nobody else has mentioned this, the song is about the death of Layne's friend Andrew Wood. He was the frontman of Mother Love Bone and the most influential artist of that era that no one really heard of. When he OD'ed it sent ripples through the Seattle music scene, precipitating the formation of Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam. A lot of the reason that AiC didn't the more airplay was the stiff competition they was up against. They were fighting against Nivana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, the juggernaut that GnR still were and the emergent Smashing Pumpkins for air time. There was so much great music being produced in the early to mid 90s, you'd tune the radio to a rock station and nearly every track was a gem. It was a wonderful time to be young.
They were also super early in that era. They pretty much dethroned the Motley Crew phase of MTV but by the time people had caught onto the sound, as you said, Pearl Jam had this photogenic ball of fire frontman and Layne's issues were most likely making it tougher for the band to be marketed on the same level
IMO, it was because they were too heavy, at least in my local airspace (Minneapolis, MN). I never heard anything close to heavy metal on the radio at the time, but those others were "grunge" and were just soft enough to make it on. AIC was too heavy, even though certainly not considered as heavy as Metallica, et. al.
I'm a 58 y/o and I missed the Alice In chains boat. I have no idea how they slipped by me. But they are now one of my favorite bands. A very late discovery.
Layne's voice is unique, he was one of the greatest rock singers. Innate talent, powerful drives and legatos, harmonized incredibly with Cantrell, always referring to the atmosphere of compositions. Power, technique, feeling. Legendary. Awesome video, dudes
Cantrell was always the soul of Alice In Chains. Yes, Layne had the voice and nobody can take that from him, but Cantrell's writing, riffing and harmonized (and in this case lead) vocals are what makes Alice, Alice. That's the only reason the Duvall albums work. Even Jerry's solo albums sound like Alice in Chains.
I don’t think anyone gives Cantrell his credit, the man had to cover laynes back so often, wrote a majority of AIC, his riff work should be considered as legendary, is in my eyes.
When I was playing Alice in Chains in my apartment, my roommate asked "who is that singing?" not "who is that playing guitar?". Layne was the heart of the band not Cantrell. Layne had the voice that made the band big, wrote 50% of the songs including their biggest hit Man in the Box. Layne was the one the crowd went wild for when he walked out on unplugged not Jerry. Layne's job was to sing each song effectively and uniquely not compose guitar riffs and solos. Layne also started the stacked vocals for songs like Them Bones and the harmonization in the band that was the core sound of the band.
I still listen to that Mother Love Bone album frequently. Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns never fails to induce tears and chills, and sometimes physical pain. All at the same time. "And this is my kind of love, the kind that moves on. It's the kind that leaves me alone. Yes, it does." Sigh.
The saddest thing about this magnificent band, with this literal magical vocalist, is that their entire existential purpose was to be a message and lesson about Addiction. And that doesn't get recognized. After the 60's and 70's, and all the other artistic magicians we lost to addiction, Layne came along to be a sort of subconscious sacrifice for that message. He was crying out not only for himself, but for everyone who struggles with it. A warning of its despair, and the hope of turning away from it.
If you believe that their entire existential purpose was to be a message and lesson about addiction, then that's on you. That says what you are about. It may be the truth for your experience, but it isn't the Truth. For me, their entire existential purpose was to be a message and lesson about good quality kick-ass Music.

“Know me, broken by my master” The opening line is so desolate, but it ends with that glimpse of hope and longing, “If I would, could you?” Just amazing lyrics for such a heart wrenching song.

To me, there’s an inherent sadness to just about every AIC song. Layne’s addiction had a tight hold on him and I feel like it flows in the undercurrent of all their songs.
The way Layne sang was otherworldly, genius and feels like a complete miracle. Those first notes before he even sang a word!!! Takes you straight to heaven...
This album, Dirt, is nothing but hit after hit after hit. As far as I’m concerned, there’s not a single bad song on the album. There’s very very few albums I can genuinely say that about. AiC is very much a fusion of Jazz, Blues and a heavier rock. Layne’s voice with Jerry’s guitar and harmonizing is the key to their really unique sound. I’m happy you guys finally got back around to AiC and you have a lot more songs to discover and enjoy from this album. I’m jealous, I wish I could experience Dirt for the first time again. Mark Starr was the bassist on this album. He passed away of a drug overdose some years after Layne did. He had the same heroin addiction that Layne did and he never got over losing Layne. He went on Celebrity Rehab, a reality show, and seemed to be on the way towards sobriety, but he relapsed and overdosed. It’s tragic, AiC has lost two members to heroin addiction, though Starr was already out of the band when he passed. Edit : No idea where Mark came from, probably an autocorrect from my sausage fingers, but yes, it’s Mike Starr, sorry.
Alice in Chains was far ahead of their time. They were actually highly touted and they toured extensively. I saw them twice in Detroit and they were the Fukin Bomb!
So lucky. Im from battle Creek and was too young when they toured. My best friend saw them at Lolapalooza 1993 and said laynes voice echoed throughout and gave him chills.
Cantrell could HARMONIZE with Layne, yes. But the minute you hear those vocals rise and chill your soul, that's pure Layne. End of of story. Pure haunted, tortured power.😍😍
My and my best friend freaked out when we first heard this album in ‘92. We had it on repeat all summer. Takes me back to some high and low times. Quite a journey into the mind of a drug user. The music was ahead of its time and holds up to this day
AiC has some intensely autobiographical lyrics, which I think is how there's both a laid-back groove and a sense of urgency at the same time. I was more into Nirvana at the time, but I like AiC more and more as the years go on. I'm so happy that I got to see Alice in Chains when they headlined Lollapalooza in 1993-ish. I'll never forget Layne Staley coming out on stage and calling the crowd "Lollapalosers" before opening a beer and spending most of the set singing while sitting on a stool like it was the corner stage in a small bar instead of the main stage in front of a 100,000+ crowd.

It's one of the mainstream bands in grunge like nirvana, pearl jam, Alice in chains are always mentioned! So they're no way underrated maybe a little less popular compared to nirvana but they still have a great fan base!
One of my fav bands ever. So happy I was introduced to rock at a very young age. Made me pick up guitar. More people need to expand their musical tastes. So much beautiful stuff out there.

Layne is no different from any of us. Everyone has a vice. Whether drugs, alcohol, overeating,shopping, pornography. Even Gossip, the worst one..All are addictions, we all have them. Let’s help one another..We stick together thru thick and thin..
Their entire unplugged set just guts me anytime I listen to it. Looking at Layne when he's that low hurts my heart. And the knowledge that he would end up even lower breaks my soul.

Mike Knight sadly his death is never recognized as much as Layne is. He was just as instrumental to this group and his death was just as sad. AIC was plagued with addiction and still made amazing music I will always cherish.
Mike Starr was a kick ass bass player. His hard driving heavy sound is iconic and the force behind their OG sound. Sean Kinney on drums is an amazing drummer as well. Their whole unit was tight. Love this band AIC Rules♡

Layne’s voice cannot be matched. My favorite band to come out of the era and my top 5 of all time. The lyrics are dark and Layne has the most beautiful haunting voice to compliment the songs. Jerry and Layne together were magical.
I'd be down to see a reaction to the entire album for "Dirt". Also: Alice In Chains get overshadowed by Nirvana a lot, though, IMO, Alice In Chains is better.

I'm a huge Nirvana fan for like 10 years, and I just started really discovering Alice in Chains for something like one week, and I gotta say.. you are absolutely right. AiC is definitely a better and more talented band than Nirvana (it should be something hard to admit for a long time Nirvana fan like me, but I have actually not a shadow of a doubt about it). I'm now just simply amazed of how good this band is and wondering why it took me so long to dig their stuff. I think a band have never hit me so hard like AiC is doing right now. I suppose it will become one of my favorite bands, if not the favorite one.
I grew up in Seattle with these guys - went to school with Layne up in Lynnwood. AIC was a major force in the Seattle music scene during the whole grunge revolution - Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, AIC and Nirvana. Most of the hardcore fans in Seattle gravitated to Soundgarden and AIC while Pearl jam and Nirvana got the most attention across the country initially. AIC's entire catalogue is wrapped around Layne's intense heroin addiction - once you realize that, all these songs and their lyrics make more sense. AIC is about addiction. The ultimate double-edged sword.
I didn't even have to click on this to know that they're gonna absolutely love this song. Groove is killer, harmonies are sick, and the lyrics are great.
It's really great when the "correct" song in my opinion wins the poll. This is a great representation of the group as a whole. Man In The Box is great, but it's just played out at this point.

I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne!

I'm a little late to the party, but every time you mentioned the bass, I couldn't help but think how proud Mike Starr would've been to hear that. It always broke my heart that he struggled so hard with his own addictions and his overwhelming guilt over Layne's death. And after all that, seeing him on Celebrity Rehab was absolutely soul-crushing. They portrayed him as just another washed-up, has-been, and I think that the humiliation from that whole experience really just did him in. #fuckyoudoctordrew RIP Mike Starr. RIP Layne Staley.

Yeah, I 100% totally agree. They made the Celeb Rehab as a 'fly on the wall' + just watched people struggle (instead of making it where they actually gave people help). Like the celebs were trapped in a box just to be looked at. It was so saddening to see Mike Starr & Jeff Conaway not receive any assistance. You could see it in their eyes that CR wasn't even lifting 1 finger + was just sat back wanting ratings + delighting in their unhappiness. RIP Mike (and Jeff). [el'sda2].

I'm a Black man and I grew up listening to Santana and Bob Marley because that was what my parents played all the time in the house. By the time I was In middle school I was already into Alice in Chains and Smashing Pumpkins. Grunge,Classic rock, Goth, Metal, Electronic, Blues, I love it all. More Black parents out there should introduce Rock music to their kids at a young age.

Jerry wrote this song as a tribute to his friend who passed, Andrew Wood. His story is tragic, but he was all about the good vibes (like Ryan) 333💖
Andrew Wood was the vocalist for Mother Love Bone, one of the early bands of the Seattle scene of the late 80s. He died of a heroine overdose around 1990, which had a huge impact on the bands in the Seattle scene in the time just before they started getting signed to major label deals. The personal connections between Seattle’s legendary groups from the 90s ran deep. AIC, Soundgarden, and members of Pearl Jam were all connected to and through A.W. I believe that this song was for and about him (with the spelling changed to “Would?”) Amazing song by an incredible band.

Guys ,if nobody else has mentioned this, the song is about the death of Layne's friend Andrew Wood. He was the frontman of Mother Love Bone and the most influential artist of that era that no one really heard of. When he OD'ed it sent ripples through the Seattle music scene, precipitating the formation of Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam.
A lot of the reason that AiC didn't the more airplay was the stiff competition they was up against. They were fighting against Nivana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, the juggernaut that GnR still were and the emergent Smashing Pumpkins for air time. There was so much great music being produced in the early to mid 90s, you'd tune the radio to a rock station and nearly every track was a gem. It was a wonderful time to be young.
They were also super early in that era. They pretty much dethroned the Motley Crew phase of MTV but by the time people had caught onto the sound, as you said, Pearl Jam had this photogenic ball of fire frontman and Layne's issues were most likely making it tougher for the band to be marketed on the same level
IMO, it was because they were too heavy, at least in my local airspace (Minneapolis, MN). I never heard anything close to heavy metal on the radio at the time, but those others were "grunge" and were just soft enough to make it on. AIC was too heavy, even though certainly not considered as heavy as Metallica, et. al.
Mother love bone got their contract right before Andrew wood died. Love aic just as much no w as then.

Cantrell was always the soul of Alice In Chains. Yes, Layne had the voice and nobody can take that from him, but Cantrell's writing, riffing and harmonized (and in this case lead) vocals are what makes Alice, Alice. That's the only reason the Duvall albums work. Even Jerry's solo albums sound like Alice in Chains.

I don’t think anyone gives Cantrell his credit, the man had to cover laynes back so often, wrote a majority of AIC, his riff work should be considered as legendary, is in my eyes.
When I was playing Alice in Chains in my apartment, my roommate asked "who is that singing?" not "who is that playing guitar?". Layne was the heart of the band not Cantrell. Layne had the voice that made the band big, wrote 50% of the songs including their biggest hit Man in the Box. Layne was the one the crowd went wild for when he walked out on unplugged not Jerry. Layne's job was to sing each song effectively and uniquely not compose guitar riffs and solos. Layne also started the stacked vocals for songs like Them Bones and the harmonization in the band that was the core sound of the band.

I flat out wore that CD out in college. So fun to watch folks discover and appreciate it decades later!
The saddest thing about this magnificent band, with this literal magical vocalist, is that their entire existential purpose was to be a message and lesson about Addiction. And that doesn't get recognized. After the 60's and 70's, and all the other artistic magicians we lost to addiction, Layne came along to be a sort of subconscious sacrifice for that message. He was crying out not only for himself, but for everyone who struggles with it. A warning of its despair, and the hope of turning away from it.
Kind of like how Shinedown has a lot of songs like Save Me or Cut the Cord

To me, there’s an inherent sadness to just about every AIC song. Layne’s addiction had a tight hold on him and I feel like it flows in the undercurrent of all their songs.
Just like how after Chester’s death all of the lyrics in Linkin Park’s songs seemed to hit different (to me, anyway) 😔

This album, Dirt, is nothing but hit after hit after hit. As far as I’m concerned, there’s not a single bad song on the album. There’s very very few albums I can genuinely say that about. AiC is very much a fusion of Jazz, Blues and a heavier rock. Layne’s voice with Jerry’s guitar and harmonizing is the key to their really unique sound. I’m happy you guys finally got back around to AiC and you have a lot more songs to discover and enjoy from this album. I’m jealous, I wish I could experience Dirt for the first time again.
Mark Starr was the bassist on this album. He passed away of a drug overdose some years after Layne did. He had the same heroin addiction that Layne did and he never got over losing Layne. He went on Celebrity Rehab, a reality show, and seemed to be on the way towards sobriety, but he relapsed and overdosed. It’s tragic, AiC has lost two members to heroin addiction, though Starr was already out of the band when he passed.

My and my best friend freaked out when we first heard this album in ‘92. We had it on repeat all summer. Takes me back to some high and low times. Quite a journey into the mind of a drug user. The music was ahead of its time and holds up to this day
AiC has some intensely autobiographical lyrics, which I think is how there's both a laid-back groove and a sense of urgency at the same time. I was more into Nirvana at the time, but I like AiC more and more as the years go on. I'm so happy that I got to see Alice in Chains when they headlined Lollapalooza in 1993-ish. I'll never forget Layne Staley coming out on stage and calling the crowd "Lollapalosers" before opening a beer and spending most of the set singing while sitting on a stool like it was the corner stage in a small bar instead of the main stage in front of a 100,000+ crowd.

Everyone always speaks on Cantrell and Layne but never talks about the talent Sean Kinney and Mike Starr has and how much they have put into the band
Sean Kinney is almost the sole reason I wanted to learn the drums. It is a shame that most people don't even know who he is
Mike Knight sadly his death is never recognized as much as Layne is. He was just as instrumental to this group and his death was just as sad. AIC was plagued with addiction and still made amazing music I will always cherish.
Mike Starr was a kick ass bass player. His hard driving heavy sound is iconic and the force behind their OG sound. Sean Kinney on drums is an amazing drummer as well. Their whole unit was tight. Love this band AIC Rules♡

I'm a huge Nirvana fan for like 10 years, and I just started really discovering Alice in Chains for something like one week, and I gotta say.. you are absolutely right. AiC is definitely a better and more talented band than Nirvana (it should be something hard to admit for a long time Nirvana fan like me, but I have actually not a shadow of a doubt about it).
I'm now just simply amazed of how good this band is and wondering why it took me so long to dig their stuff. I think a band have never hit me so hard like AiC is doing right now. I suppose it will become one of my favorite bands, if not the favorite one.

On the topic of the bass, Mike Starr was the bassist at the time. He sadly passed away in 2011 from a drug overdose.
He was also the last person to see Layne alive

I grew up in Seattle with these guys - went to school with Layne up in Lynnwood. AIC was a major force in the Seattle music scene during the whole grunge revolution - Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, AIC and Nirvana. Most of the hardcore fans in Seattle gravitated to Soundgarden and AIC while Pearl jam and Nirvana got the most attention across the country initially. AIC's entire catalogue is wrapped around Layne's intense heroin addiction - once you realize that, all these songs and their lyrics make more sense. AIC is about addiction. The ultimate double-edged sword.
I didn't even have to click on this to know that they're gonna absolutely love this song. Groove is killer, harmonies are sick, and the lyrics are great.

It's really great when the "correct" song in my opinion wins the poll. This is a great representation of the group as a whole. Man In The Box is great, but it's just played out at this point.
I’ve heard this song hundreds of times, still gave me goosebumps for 10 seconds straight during the intro. Nothing is like this song.

7:10 the fact that Layne was the founder of another band called Mad Season and they had a lot of that jazz thing ur talking about , they almost mixed jazz and blues with the same grunge. So maybe it's all coming from Layne :)

i dont know why, but in the 90th i liked more pearl jam and smashing pumpkins and not so much aic or tool and now it is exactly the other way... now i like aic and tool like crazy... soundgarden and chris cornell i liked in the 90th and now the same way and nirvana was ever the most worst grunge band ever...
Would? is their best song. Perfect balance, not too popular, doesnt get overplayed. Showcases his superior voicing, good phrasing.

I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne!
