- The Private's letter (이등병의 편지) is a South Korean folk song written and composed by Kim Hyun Sung, who was the first to sing the song. Later the song became well-known because Kim Kwang Seok's remake. He performed the song while playing an acoustic guitar and harmonica.
The lyrics of the song are in the form of a monologue or of a letter from an enlisted soldier written to friends. Since the Korean War, military service is mandatory to all males in South Korea. South Korean men are conscripted at the age of twenty. The song shows the sadness draftees endured during separation from parents, loved ones, close friends, and their homes. However, the song ends with a promise from the narrator to himself that the military service year is not the end of his youth but the start of another stage.

When I was still just a kid, dreaming of becoming a soldier. I saw the movie JSA and this song caught me. I didn’t understand a single word but the essence of the song.
Years later I joined the army and was eventually sent overseas. In Lebanon I had the honour of working with South Korean servicemen. This reminded me of the song and I tried to find it. I failed. But now, almost 9 years later I have finally found it! And it still hits me just as it did al those years ago. (Even harder, since I now know what it means to be a soldier away from family and friends)

Wow! I love his voice. I am from Germany, 18 years old and I know how much importance his music was/is for so many koreans. And when I'm listening to him I just begin to cry 'cause he sings with so much emotions.

He feels that everything's new and you could see that he's getting a new start. it means he have just stepped out to get to the training center. In other words, it's a new start for a young day of life. Every Korean NEVER don't like to go to the army. so i think joining army is not he's dream, But he is not frustrated by joining the army but sees it as positive.
Of course it's my own view.

내가 이 노래를 좋아하는 이유는, 김광석님의 우수어린 깊은 울림이 있는 목소리의 음색, 게다가 너무나 아름다운 서정적이고 시적인 노랫말, 그리고 아련하게 아직도 떠오르는 철부지 시절, 벅찬 감정과 젊음을 안고, 김신조 일당이 청와대를 기습하고 울진/삼척에 120명의 무장공비가 침투하던 1968년 추운 겨울 어느 날, 지금은 사라져버린, 대전 공군 신병훈련소, 이름하여 ' 항공병학교' 에 입대했던 그 시절을 떠오르게 하기 때문이다.
더욱 이 노래를 여기서 접하게 되면서 새삼 감동하는 이유는, 원곡의 한글 가사에 충실하고 거의 완벽하게 영역된 영어 자막이 원곡의 노랫말 느낌을 외국인들에게 이해하도록 전달되었다는 점이다.
