As a Queen fan and an Extreme fan, that is what I took from that performance - Extreme were really into Queen. It came across loud and clear. Brilliant.

also, wasn't John already at the concert when Extreme played? He was with Brian and Roger to greet the fans at the beginning, so why does Nuno say that John was in a car on the way to the show when Extreme played?
Nuno's passion shining through here! Lovely interview. Yes George Michael did an amazing job on STL, but Extreme's medley is my fave part of the concert.

I just watched it yesterday. Amazing. I'm from Massachusetts and been an Extreme fan since the very beginning. These guys are our hometown treasure. The talent is off the charts.

Extreme is the biggest fan of Queen. Then they were outed from the video. But people will always remember that performance as we remember Freddie with the rest of Queen back in that same stage in 1985 at Live Aid. I remember how Brian introduced Extreme. I know it word for word. Big fan of Extreme for thirty years, and one of Freddie’s biggest fan ever. That was surreal.
I loved that concert. I watched the original MTV broadcast, and recorded it on a VCR. The Extreme Queen medley was awesome. Hearing Extreme’s new album this year, and watching Nuno’s interviews have made me so happy.
The way he talks about what he felt in that moment... That's the spirit of music, only art can do that! I'm so glad to hear it from this great music hero (talking about another great music hero)!

I've been a Queen fan since I was a kid in the 70's and an Extreme fan since they came out and thought that their performance was a show stopper...Nuno is such a Great guy...
It’s still my favorite concert event of my life and I wasn’t even there. Extreme fans know how genuine Nuno is being here- listen to the Extreme B side “Sex and Love”- it’s directly inspired by Hammer To Fall. Extreme’s harmonies lend themselves very well to easily seeing Queen’s influence. And yes, Brian is universally known as being a nice guy in an often not-nice business. Hearing that John Deacon thanked him and saw the parallel- just about brought tears to my eyes. The fans looked like they were having a true celebration of Freddie and Queen. He’s right- by Radio Ga-Ga, that was a celebration in the truest form.
I was really glad to hear that John had said that - I'd been _kinda_ thinking to myself that there were some pretty strong parallels between the two performances, but wondering how to express that without pissing people off. It wasn't *_the same._* Of course not - it couldn't be. That kind of moment can only ever happen once. Anything that comes after will always be compared to that first time, but I'd describe Extreme's set as a really powerful echo of the Live Aid! show. A new performance that resonates with that first one. A pretty incredible day.
Brian May is an ANGEL! That he forgave this brash, young band who broke the rules BIG TIME, says so much about him. Great question about the red tie. I've watched that performance many times and never questioned the tie. Even learning that you're not supposed to shave before an album is done is interesting insider info. Cool interview!! But I think Nuno makes EVERYTHING cool! 😊
My first concert was GnR with Brian opening. It was St. Patrick's day 1993 at the old Boston Garden. Brian brought out Gary and Nuno and we were all treated to a mini version of the tribute concert. It was AMAZING!!!

Hey, Kylie. I've watched the medley over and over and over since it first aired, and it never ceases to absolutely floor me. The musicianship to pull that off on that day on that stage, for that audience (live and via broadcast / out front and in the wings) and their pure love of the songs was / is utterly awesome. I ran into Nuno a couple of years ago at a gig in Hollywood and got talking to him about Queen. Such a nice guy who clearly has a massive passion for the band.

I used to be obsessed with nuno bettencourt at that time and watched the tribute with baited breath waiting for extreme to come on the medley was rocking
When Brian said that bit about Extreme understanding what Queen was about all these years and what Freddie was about all these years i was wondering what he meant. As soon as Extreme hit the stage with Mustapha and then exploded with Bohemian Rhapsody and then followed by Keep Yourself Alive, i knew exactly what Brian meant as it reminded me of Queen’s own Live Aid 20 minute slot where they played all the hits. Definitely a highlight of the show.
Master Nuno I am soooo great full for you sir. You are the greatest guitarist that will ever live. That show was the greatest tribute performance in the history of tributes.
I'm glad that the 2013 DVD (2002 DVD only had the 2nd half) included the 1st half of the tribute concert as Extremes set was the real highlight of the entire show.
I felt that need too. 😊 Seems like it's the mandatory thing to do after watching this interview. And I didn't have to search long... The video of this performance (in two parts) is the 1st one that appears when you scroll down
For those who have seen the performance many many times, but haven't seen it again for quite some time, then sees this clip, chances are, 99.5% will definitely search TH-cam to find and watch the performance again. I'm one of those 99.5%.
How have I only just found this interview! Extreme played the best set of the 1st half by miles (think Queen at Live Aid for me). Great interview Kylie!!
Nice to know what myself and others have said for years was first said by Deaky: what Extreme did for the FM tribute concert was like what Queen did for Live Aid.
You know part of why that medley worked so well is that it was true to what Queen did back in the day. No extra musicians added to fill out the sound. Just 4 guys and 3 strong vocals and amazing songs. You can’t understate how special it is when you get people whose voices blend that well. Pat is the secret weapon in those 3 parts harmonies in my opinion. They nailed it that day and it was my, and many other people’s, favorite performance of the event.
I was at the concert and watched it again recently on TV. The love and excitement at Extremes set, from within the crowd, was electrifying. Nuno's story about John Deacon though - John introduced the concert alongside Brian and Roger, I don't understand why he added the bit about being in the car.
You're right, he did... But no one knows what was going on. John might have gone off somewhere for an hour and returned. I'm certain Nuno's respect for the band means he wouldn't make stuff up...
Sad to say even thought Extreme was good funky band with a big ballad hit that everyone remembers, but I almost feel Extreme's legacy will always be cemented from that Queen Tribute show because they blew everyone off the stage that night. That was a one killer tribute medley and everyone enjoyed it. They had the balls to play stuff like Radio Ga Ga which was a time of hard Rock and they didn't care and people loved it and it sounded awesome.
When Nuno Bettencourt was playing some of Brian May's guitar stuff from a couple of magazines, he was having an interview with Brian talking about a few of these magazines and they were talking about it for 2 hours, and they were also spending time talking about some albums to.
It’s amazing to hear that story. I watched that with my sister who was The biggest fan of Freddies, and that was such an awesome moment they absolutely owned that first half of the tribute.
I didn't know Brian May didn't approve of doing this medley and I thought it was all planned all along. I am glad Extreme carried on anyway. I remember watching the concert on TV on time. I recorded the radio broadcast on a cassette tape and listened to it over and over again.
Still one of my top6 idols of guitar when i was a pre-teen learning and getting into metal.! Whilst all my other mates in bands were copying Metallica, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden, i was copying Nuno, Dimebag, Le Tekro, Gilbert, Friedman and Becker.! But Nuno was always my fave.💖🤘🤘🤘🤘
You only have to watch Nuno while he is playing "love of my life" to realise he is having an outer body experience that day, I picked up the guitar the day Extreme played at that tribute I couldnt believe the way the band played that day It will stay with me for life!
The Queen medley is one of the best live performances ever. They gave the fans exactly what they wanted that day.

I felt that need too. 😊 Seems like it's the mandatory thing to do after watching this interview. And I didn't have to search long... The video of this performance (in two parts) is the 1st one that appears when you scroll down
I just watched the performance for the first time. Extreme slayed! Great decision guys!
Hi Brian, Yay! Pleased you watched it and enjoyed it!
I have goose bumps listening to Nuno speak about that day! It was excellent!
Great interview!
Thank you!!!
Extreme's medley set the tone for the concert, that this was a tribute, not just a bunch of bands. It was necessary.
For those who have seen the performance many many times, but haven't seen it again for quite some time, then sees this clip, chances are, 99.5% will definitely search TH-cam to find and watch the performance again.
I'm one of those 99.5%.
I remember watching that concert live on tv, it was magical :)
I admire him and his skills!
me too... sigh...
Great damn story! I'll remember it forever, as I suspect the audience of that performance had felt ever since
How have I only just found this interview! Extreme played the best set of the 1st half by miles (think Queen at Live Aid for me). Great interview Kylie!!
Ah pleased you found it in the end... thank you! x
Nice to know what myself and others have said for years was first said by Deaky: what Extreme did for the FM tribute concert was like what Queen did for Live Aid.
A blessing and challenge all at once. Brings tears to my eyes.
Wish I'd seen this on release. Brilliant and long awaited.
It was one of the hands down best performances ever
It’s amazing to hear that story. I watched that with my sister who was The biggest fan of Freddies, and that was such an awesome moment they absolutely owned that first half of the tribute.
Im so pleased he went into detail about it as I was always blown away by this performance too!
I didn't know Brian May didn't approve of doing this medley and I thought it was all planned all along.
I am glad Extreme carried on anyway.
I remember watching the concert on TV on time.
I recorded the radio broadcast on a cassette tape and listened to it over and over again.
Right? Like I said to Nuno, that took guts!
Nuno, a legend playing another legend riffs, Brian... epic moment!
💯
When the *Spirit of Music* drive and moves you, one becomes unstoppable♪♫♪ Great interview Kylie... 😉
You only have to watch Nuno while he is playing "love of my life" to realise he is having an outer body experience that day, I picked up the guitar the day Extreme played at that tribute I couldnt believe the way the band played that day It will stay with me for life!
