Cool although I think the great southern trendkill is their best and most unique. I also like that Seth Putnam adds vocals to the album.

Gotta go with Great Southern Trendkill as their best.

Pantera was a gateway in my teens to extreme metal. I still love Dimebags playing but i have grown out of their music.

Like you Jerry I first discovered Pantera around 1991 when I moved to the States and what a musical Slap!
Back in the days, I didn't realise at all that they opened for me the gates what is known as the Extreme Metal genre. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to see them live.
In random order and according to my current personnal tastes here's my from "worst" to "best" list:
    9)"Metal Magic"
    8) "I Am The Night"
    7) "Projects In The Jungle"
    6) "The Great Southern Trendkill"
    5) "Power Metal"
    4) "Far Beyond Driven"
    3) "Cowboys From Hell"
    2) "Vulgar of Display Power"
    1) "Reinventing The Steel".
Only from an instrumental view point and a Heavy metal perspective, I find their 4 first albums very interesting.
To this day, Pantera is still one of my Favorite bands.

My favorite ones Vulgar display of power and Cowboys from hell, even during hitting the gym, and with lot of nostalgia, I saw them live opening a show of Metallica in Mexico city back in the 99, it was total chaos that show during their performance, when they started with domination the chairs in the front rows were thrown into the air just massively, and then people accumulated them as a little mountain starting a fire, and many were injured but even those affected were not even there for the pain, people were shouting riot in between songs, all of us who were in the back went to the front row and it rained beer everywhere, and even ice cubes oops, the girls showed their boobs to be bathed in beer, lot female nudity indeed, it was a memorable show, Phil at the end singing the Mexican national anthem along a viva Mexico, I was wearing an Absu tshirt of their first album, concerts as such never happened again, I just found the setlist, were no soft songs that day: Domination/Hollow, Becoming, Primal concrete sledge, Fucking Hostile and then Cowboys from hell...24 minutes of pure violently fun

The first 3 Pantera albums I don't care about. Cowboys and Great Southern Trendkill are my favorites. They got heavier with each album. To me, they were a hardcore/groove metal hybrid

Of their early period, I've only listened to Power Metal, and it was all right, not my cup of tea, but really I would consider their 80s material to practically be a different project altogether from 90s Pantera. As far as ranking the classic 90s albums, I go:
    5: Cowboys From Hell
    4: Vulgar Display of Power
    3: Reinventing The Steel
    2: Far Beyond Driven
    1: The Great Southern Trendkill
Always thought Vulgar was a bit overrated, and Reinventing definitely underrated. Trendkill is unique in their discography, as it is a frequently bleak and brutal (by Pantera standards) album, which is what I tend to gravitate towards in metal, so probably not too surprising that it would be my favorite, haha. It also has a shitload of killer riffs and songs though, good soloing too. RIP Pantera.

While Pantera have never been amongst my favorite bands, TGSTK is a metal masterpiece that dwarfs even CFH. I thought your low ranking of Show No Mercy was surprising, but this one even more a surprise!

I got introduced to 'Far Beyond Driven' but never got used to that album. It was all Black Metal for and after for me back then.

  • @g-man4744

Pantera in the 90s definitely were an extension of 80s thrash, they took the slower/heavier breakdown parts that were common in Metallica, Megadeth etc...and made them the centre of their style. I always thought of Meshuggah in the same way, 1st album is thrash with a heavy focus on the rythmic power rather the speed of the riffs, the rest is history.

  • @nescumzwei

I saw them twice back in the day. The type of band where if Phil was in a good mood, they were damn good!
I came to Vulgar after the other 90s albums. At that point it had so much hype behind it that it could never fully live up to what I wanted. The Great Southern Trendkill always came across as their most extreme album so it was a great gateway into death and black metal for me.

When i was discovering metal around the turn of the century a lot of my friends were big on Pantera, it just didnt work for me for whatever reason. The only album i enjoy is Cowboys from hell to be honest.
Good video, very objective and reasoned breakdown.

Don't think it's so unexpected tbh. Pantera put up some good work and fit very well in the more "controversial, no fuck given and aggressive metal" just like Black does. Attitude being probably the main thing. It's not my favourite music out there but I would be lying if I didn't enjoy a bunch of stuff they have made. Always respected what they stood for, very sad how it ended - honestly still surreal to think some fuckhead just shoots someone due him being butthurt because that guy insulted someone he liked..

I have their first 3 albums and think cowboys from hell is the best of the 3.Anything after those just became tedious to my way of thinking. They lost their groove and Phil Anselmo’s angry screaming vocals just became irritating. This band doesn’t stand up to the likes of Slayer or even Sepultura .

well i have to say you got it really wrong here, and i ll tell you why, check all their records, until far beyond driven, they were still experimenting, they didnt have an exact idea of how a consistent and tight record should be, far beyond is the absolute proof of that, you have a record which the first four songs are classic and then its a mixed bag of some mediocre songs and some really boring and bad, i mean listen to sunken chicks, its a seven minute song and its not even a ballad, you can say after i m broken they run out of steam on this one, its completely inconsistent, something that many people have pointed out over the years.
On vulgar display of power they did much better, the band sounds more tight and focused on every level even lyricwise despite that phil is not the best poet in metal, but still after repeated listenings the record shows how blutantly immature is, on the other hand on Trendkill you see a very different band, the constant tours around the world made their sound bigger and somehow more mature, they play like they are on a mission (because the trend is dead) of course Phil could scream less, but if you compare it with their previews records its undeniably their peak, the southern groove metal style could not get better than this, its their crowning achievement, and one of the best records in metal which you never get bored or irritated, so where could they go after that? just go old school touch the roots of metal like sabbath and mellow down a little bit and have for me their second best record after trendkill which is reinventing the steel, yes i believe reinventing is much better than far beyond and even vulgar, is shows a band that stands on their ground and they know they dont have to prove anything to anyone, the lyrics are fun, which is surprising for pantera standards and if you pay close attention the music is focused and fun also, i like all the songs on this record, but you cant deny that "l ll cast a shadow", "we ll grind that axe" and "make them disappear" are one of the best songs the band have ever written,

While I of course can respect and understand your opinion, it just differs from me. I think they had a better thing going on with FBD. I know I'm not the only one, but of course your're not the only one with your opinion either. This might be also related when each of us discovered the band (aka "AD"; after discovery). When FBD was released, I was 18 or so, but it was something that I listened to a lot back then so of course it made a bigger impact than me listening to those others decades later. While it's not purely nostalgia, that difference still matters.

@@RautaMetal yes i know what you mean, and it surely plays a role, i discovered them on a very young age one year before fbd came out, i liked vulgar too much at that time, i remember buying fbd the year it came out and i loved the first four songs but the rest was really depressive to me which made me to never listen the record again ever after all those years, which for me is really odd personally because i always revisit records, but i always go back to tgst and reinventing.
