I laughed at that as well, it is quite interesting to see someone from literally as far on the "outside" of the fragrance game (price, rarity, popularity) as possible, but who still knows so much about perfumery in general. It seems like he lives under a rock with how he doesn't know about fragrances the way most do, but it's a very interesting perspective.

Every summer I see people commenting about how they are worried their fragrances might go bad because their room/house gets hot in the summer. I figured you of all people would be able to shed light on the topic and discuss the shelf life of fragrances and what can actually impact the integrity of a fragrance and whether or not it is something we should be worried about. I figured it would be helpful to have a reference video that people can be directed to in order to learn about the subject.

What’s up I am an indie perfumer and I’ll try to keep this short, truly the best storage would be using a wine cooler, you can set the temp btwn 55-60, light and humidity are what causes decay because “most” fragrances are made with 190 proof ethanol which means it contains 5% water. When exposed to light and heat the water “may” mold. Not always going to happen, I leave all of my frags on a dresser and sometimes they are exposed to light but not much. However if you take for example aarons bottles the new black ones you would have no worries about the juice turning because there is no way light will infiltrate. You would just have to be worried of clear bottles. Also this process takes years, I own some vintage frags that are from the 80’s and are perfectly fine. I don’t believe in expiration dates.
Also, I forgot one very important thing. There is something called a "Schiff's Base". Not to go too chemistry here but it's when you blend an aldehyde like "Lyral(which you hear Aaron talk about often)" with a compound containing an amino group (NH2). This blend also causes a water reaction where the water has to be removed. One can assume out of all fragrances the entirety of the water isn't. Also a classic example is when one blends things called as "methyl anthranilate" and "hydroxycitronellal" this creates what is known as "Aurantiol", a main constituent in orange flower/blossom accords. This process can pose a negative effect on the fragrance because of the water creating reaction. Obviously not all frags contain this.
@@jamesmonforte2278 I appreciate the information. My request was less for me since I am pretty familiar with the proper storage of fragrances. It was more so to have a video that contains the information you are talking about and which people can be directed to. The idea came to me because every summer I often see people in FB groups expressing concern about hot rooms and it impacting the quality of their fragrances. Just recently, someone was claiming a few months of a hot room caused a sizable portion of their collection to go “bad”. A claim I have my doubts about for multiple reasons.
I figured Aaron would be able to shed more light on how fragrances go through quality-control tests and - what I presume would be the case - that fragrance houses account for the likelihood that their fragrances will not be kept in ideal conditions in either the department stores or by the consumer. Thus, fragrances are likely more durable than we think and people are overly concerned.
As you mentioned, I too have come across old vintage fragrances that have been stored in who knows what conditions and are still perfectly preserved. So, while I am in full agreement that a wine cooler is ideal for storage, it is not necessary, as the vast majority of fragrances go decades in less than ideal conditions and still retain their quality. In short, people are way overreacting about summer having an impact on their fragrances. At least, that is my assessment.

Also, are you branded? Is it possible to purchase any of your fragrances? I am starting to explore more independent perfumers since they seem to be a source of a lot of unique ideas lately. I also have aspirations of putting a couple of ideas I have into a fully formulated fragrances, but who knows when I will get the time to follow through on any of that. Haha.
Haha yeah I would absolutely never buy a wine cooler to store frags, I have fridges for materials but that’s different and for other reasons.

Not yet smelt this one, Aaron, but now want to. Reading the comments, I might have a job finding it! Anyway, as for good cheaper frags to review, then Encore Noire (by Lalique) often gets mentioned as one of the best quality cheaper scents. Both of its flankers (Sport and A L'Extreme) are both great value, too. Don't let the 'Sport' tag put you off in this case!

Mugler makes some great scents, especially considering their price point. This is my favorite from the brand. Orange with vanilla notes makes this just like you said... clean, sweet & enjoyable! Great review! 😎
I got it for $90 2 years ago. Its harder to find now for under $200 in the US.

Just to let everyone know, just opened up ATH Celestia which discontinued and on sale, and I bought as a blind buy. It's Cinnamon and spicy, beautiful and perfect for this time of year. Aaron is definitely a master, and having a collection of his fragrances is worth trading in season tickets for a team that shall not be named!
Ultra Zest is discontinued and cannot be found for less than $300/100mL on eBay.

This was one of the best fragrances I ever experienced. It was tragic that it was discontinued by the time I tried a sample. I still have a drop in my vial that I refuse to let go.

Aaron, really appreciate the honest perspective from a perfumer. Would you like to compare YSL La Nuit De L'homme frozen to the original? They utilize a pepper note on the frozen to get close to the cardamom note on the original.

I haven't tried this one because its discontinued and the cheapest i've seen it for was nearly double that but it is a great range from what i have smelled I'd really appreciate if you could review some ambers as i'm looking for something that lasts on my skin but is more than just a skin scent, hopefully something that i can get a sample of before buying. Just an idea Aaron...do what you mentioned _you_ would do to this, and do it as your own frag. This is discontinued, and I'm not a Mugler fan in general...this was the one of the 2 or 3 tops that I actually liked, and tons of people like it. But it's not perfect, and I think you could nail it. I too would love more naturals in it. The tops notes are the best, the dry down is ok (the usual familiar dirty patchouli Mugler dna). Cheers!
😯☹They discontinued this about two years ago so if you can find it it's usually $300.00 for a 3.4oz bottle. I know Loreal bought Mugler so hopefully they will bring it back😍 I have a bottle about 1/3 full so I mix it with a well made clone oil (Oil Perfumery makes a good clone) and put it in a tiny perfume spray bottle to extend it❤❤It's my favorite Mugler fragrance from the Amen line.

@@mpclive5693 it is very very close, only thing missing is that it doesn’t have that angel man signature smell (liquorice/ cinnamon smell) underneath which means it also doesn’t quite have the longevity. Definitely worthwhile buying it if you want 80% ultra zest smell at 30% of what a bottle if ultra zest costs now.
