In the first story you said, 5 figures when reading and then said $5k when talking about the party being for her. Those are 2 different figures, $5k is $5,000 and 5 figures is minimum $10,000. Huge difference between them. Both ridiculous for a party but huge difference.

Thank you. as a non native speaker I was "wait, when they say 5 figures they mean 5thousand? Did I read it wrong this entire time thinking on 5 numbers aligned????" I even re-watched the first story just to check if it was really 5figures or if I had misunderstood

Having had a stepmother forcibly throw me a party, it sucks. It's weird, uncomfortable, and generally a nightmare. OP was way out of line. If the stepdaughter didn't want a party, it was rude and weird to throw one for her.

Story 2 is one of the most wholesome Reddit stories I've ever heard. Not many channels cover it all. Thank you, ReallySparked :)
If I had to come out with a more wholesome story I think it would be the story of OP and James. Where OP was fighting cancer and her friend James was with her through it all. Funny enough, it hasn't been covered completely either. It's a beautiful story. I don't know if it has new updates but the ones I read were so wholesome I teared up.

Story 2 is so freaking wholesome. I am so happy that OP's dad supported him as much as he could. Even with all the ground rules they had. I'm also super happy for the relationships everyone in the family has. They all sound so happy and overjoyed. A story that genuinely makes you smile and root for a stranger feels hard to come by

Story 2: I think the theory i have for why OP's mom freaked out when she found out his dad was getting remarried and having another kid is, despite the divorce, she still believes they are married in the eyes of her god/religion. Could be completely 😮, but i can't think of a reason why she would be so upset at something that isn't her business

op in the first story sounds EXACTLY like my mother with her absolute refusal to respect other people's clearly stated boundaries while constantly insisting everyone else walk on eggshells around hers or else they're ABUSING her, her constant whining about "EVERYTHING she DOES" for everyone else as a way to shame everyone into line, her "oh woe is me everything is about me everyone is out to get me how dare everyone not kowtow to ME" attitude and just. absolutely delusional levels of entitlement. i hope op's son gets taken from her, he deserves better than this self-centered control freak who resorts to threats and shaming when she doesn't get exactly her way all the time. speaking from direct experience, the father's "constant shrugging" is almost definitely a result of years of this treatment from op. it grinds a person down until they can't muster the ability to express much in the way of opinions or overt resistance anymore, among many other things.
and for those apparently incapable of believing that genuinely awful parents exist, YES, people this delusional AND MUCH MUCH WORSE *ARE* real, they are VERY common, and i know because i was fucking birthed by one. op in this story is downright *mild* compared to how utterly bonkers people can and regularly *do* get. it's just nobody ever believes it out of some combination of something along the lines of a just world fallacy and the fact that these people tend to be VERY good at appearing respectable to others while focusing all their abuse and lunacy on their children and spouses who no one will ever believe. my mother believes government spy helicopters are watching her, there's a secret team of government psychics that want her for her real actual psychic powers, and that she's the direct descendant of PRINCESS ANASTASIA and is THE CURRENT RIGHTFUL RULER OF RUSSIA, has on a few occasions made comments implying she might suspect herself to be the literal actual second coming of jesus (even though she claims to be an athiest/wiccan), and has admitted to me that she fully believes that anyone disagreeing with her in any way is *inherently* a personal attack, among many many other things, and you would absolutely never know any of this about her because to everyone but me and my father she's flawless at pretending to be a poor sweet respectable put-upon perfect respectable middle class mother who everyone is just so cruel to.

I think I'd love to hear more stories on this... maybe even a book!
I'm sorry you had to endure that your whole life. That's not easy:( and yes absolutely people can be absolutely nuts and portray completely being normal while abusing the ones at home. Not necessarily physical abuse but the sheer lunacy some have to endure do them being out of this world crazy. I know 1 or 2 myself I'm seeing now that I'm older and realize it's not normal by any means

The stepdaughter has refused EVERY year for a party, so the stepmother ambushes the SD with a HUGE surprise party!!wtf?? She didn't tell the dad, because she knew he wouldn't agree. She did this for herself, not the SD, she wanted it to reflect what a wonderful party SHE threw, not the birthday girl. She deserves everything she gets.

The first OP is the a hole. As an adult who doesn't like to celebrate their birthday I can completely understand where the stepdaughter is coming from. She had make it clear for years that she doesn't want a party and the stepmother just completely refuses to listen and respect the kids opinion, and then wonder why the kid doesn't want to be around her

Story 1 YTA and there was a further update where she was no longer pregnant and eventhough her ex was a great dad to Toby she was deliberately not letting them see each other and didn’t like that Reddit said clearly she’s the issue as she’s a self centred narcissist and probably acted as if Lucy was a doll to dress up and because she couldn’t accept fault it was everyone else’s fault not hers, that’s why Lucy isn’t close to her and maybe Toby as she’d use that relationship to try break Lucy’s boundaries.
She also didn’t like that even her own family called her out for not letting Toby see Ex and they and Reddit said she’s going to push him away too and be all alone

Yeah the step mom in the first story was just WAY too much. If the girl never wants a bday party then why force it all of a sudden? And the fact she had it from her husband, she knew it was a bad idea from the jump. Step parents need to realize that what they want (in regards to a relationship with the step child) isn't relevant.

Story 1 The OP is kinda dumb because she clearly didn’t want a party. Especially after she went out to eat, that is more than enough for some people.
The Husband does seem like a jerk but I can’t fault him for anything.
The daughter could’ve tried to be more receptive to her but in her perspective this woman was pushing all her buttons especially when it’s clear she didn’t like her and that wasn’t helping her anxiety.
The son did nothing wrong and I hope he is doing all right.

    Story one, there all ta.
Op threw an expensive party knowing that Lucy didnt want parties every year b4.
Lucy kept OP and step brother at arms length for 7 years? Since she was 8?
Lucy's father didnt tell OP about about Lucy's social anxiety? As a parent, this info is import for OP to know. AND he married OP without intending to meld the the families. How tf did he think it would work out marrying a woman with a child and letting it stay as two seperate families in one household? Also, refusing to help OP pay for the party that OP threw for his daughter (somewhat) is a huge red flag.
I think OP divorcing is the only smart thing in this story. This sounded like a loveless marriage and loveless family.

Sorry but i have social anxiety disorder and would apologize myself if i had to leave a family run party there has to be a ton more things causeing the rift
Like i have a ok not great relationship with my parents becouse of it especially my dad whos adhd can trigger me to no end my mom has a panic disorder that head worms its way into the infinite loop that is anxiety disorder brains so its between abrasive high energy and depression laden panic ambushing that makes me struggle with mine but this means im not able to talk deeply with either but whilst this hurts as we all need people to vent to and trust but because of my disorder i cant fully trust anyone, let go of any emotional trigger , and i freeze when im offered a surprise choice.
Like women when asked were to go eat, i cant just pick it'll hit the loop and the rest of the ay will be me doctor strange future calculating over and over unable to stop.
I have learned methods to factory reset myself but the issue persists.
Its also crazy as im also dyslexic so thoughts are 3d in color and have sound like video only bad if im in an attack or triggered but yeah its like i have a live stream always playing in my brain with a loop glitch.
