Also, they missed the context: the GC isn’t a car for BMW purists, it’s a car for people to get their foot in the door with the brand with something other than a stripped-out 2 series coupe. At the end of the day I love my GC, and that’s all that matters to me. If I wanted a 2 door, I would have definitely gone with a previous-gen m240i though.

First time watching the channel and really appreciated to know the pros and cons of each car without any restraint. Others don't mention so much about the real cons (eq. fake exhaust ...) Good job !! 😉
You guys get some super strange spec S3! In Europe it has 300+ hp (usually dyno 10hp over). We can also hide the center display at a touch of a button.
Yeah, for some reason the S3/Golf R in North America is detuned (EUDM has 300hp+, USDM models used to be 292hp but have gone down to 288hp for some reason???)
That 2 Series Gran Coupe has caused me to bite through my tongue so many times because 3 of my friends have them, and talk endlessly about how great their car is and what a great driver's car it is. And me and my G20 M340i have to just sit there and try not to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind about those Mini Coopers in Drag.
North American "car reviewers" very often really are just like trashtalking douchebags, sorry! Reality here in Germany is, that the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe always gets great reviews, from the most different people. How is this possible? Because they understand the intention from BMW to build this car! North Americans are just totally annoying these days.... I know, these two guys here are Canadian and British, but this doesn't matter. It's even worse with US "car fans", because when you have an US president, who is the most disgusting fucking bastard of all times, this must have a reason... He got elected by a lot of people ;-). North Americans and their "opinions" sometimes are just fucking "asymmetrically". You just don't understand what BMW did with this car, buddies! It really doesn't fucking matter at all, that this new 2 Series four door car now has a front drive architecture. Because BMW engineered it so well, that it's still a great driving car with a very sophisticated AWD, period! If you still want your "old shit" in a compact car, you just have to wait a bit, because the new BMW 2 Series two door Coupe with only RWD will be out soon. BMW and MINI are part of the same company and therefore it has an important reason for BMW to relate the M235i 2 liter engine with 305 hp and AWD with the high powered MINI-versions with the same drivetrain. Fact is, that all these cars are just excellent! By the way, BMW has figured out that more than 90% of customers of these cars don't have any clue anyway if it's RWD or AWD...! For a BMW business case these AWD compact cars just are NOBRAINERS! There's simply no other solution than AWD with the M235i Gran Coupe, because it has a huge number of parts in common with the 305 hp MINI versions.... period! Just shut the fuck up, because you are talking too much nonsense! The new RWD 2 Series Coupe with only two doors will have a completely different drivetrain architecture and will be related to the 3 Series. Therefore it will still have the inline six- cylinder engines plus RWD. It's quite hypocritical from these guys, because the AWD system in a BMW M5 gets the highest sympathies from all these smart-asses, but in a smaller compact package like the 2 Series four door version they still want to have "RWD only". It doesn't make any sense at all, if you have so much power which you can't get on the tarmac in such a smaller car. Seriously, having more than 300 turbo hp in a compact car without AWD these days is just fucking STUPID! Just eat it, you annoying North American "hypercritical" smart-asses. Fact is, that some other carmakers with still only front drive architecture in cars with more than 300 hp just can't keep up with the high amount of traction you get with AWD like in the M235i. These two guys in the video are really talking too much of bullshit about the M235i. Turbo engine power torque plus superior AWD traction plus still a well handling smaller package like in the 2 Series Gran Coupe is all what matters. These two guys can tell what they want, because the BMW is the best driving car in comparison with the older Audi S3 and the AMG CLA35, period! German car testers have figured this out immediately by the way... Strangely, a lot of American "car fans" still can't get over from the combination of bigger and heavy engines plus RWD, which they still mean that a BMW M car has to have.... Just wake up idiots, because times are changing these days! Here in Europe now it's fucking impossible for carmakers to produce 6.2 liter supercharged V8 engines plus "only RWD" in bigger numbers, like in the new Corvette C8 for example... ;-) North Americans sometimes really are like dumb little children, who still don't get it that things are changing, because they still want to have what they are used, but what has getting quite impossible in the rest of the world. "Fuck emission laws, because we have all the cheapest fuels made from our US fracking oil... yeah!" Sorry, dear North Americans, but you are disgusting... and totally wrong! And you still don't get the intentions from BMW, that building a car like the M235i Gran Coupe makes totally sense.
@@Porsche1969 Kind of harsh opinion toward North Americans, but many of your points are accurate. The reality is this was just a couple guys giving very biased subjective opinions. The cars are not matched from a price point. The Audi is the least expensive, slowest and, sorry, but looks at least a decade dated to me. If someone showed me that car and asked "how do you like my 2008 Audi?" I wouldn't think twice about the model year. The benz does have the best exterior styling but over-done interior, and I like the interior of the BMW much better despite the Bimmer being 10K less expensive. I would bet the BMW is the fastest straight line and on the track too, but no way of knowing that from watching these guys.
Wow! I test drove this car over the weekend and I couldn't disagree more on everything. I figured the BMW M lovers would be upset due to the layout and engine, but I loved everything... except the gas mileage.
I own one and love it. Lots of Corolla and old buy here pay here Bimmer drivers chiming in on performance cars that they don’t have the driving training to extract 25% of the performance with. I’m not implying that I do but at least I’m aware. I find it hard to believe that a performance car that can do zero to 60 in 4 and half seconds and pull .91 Gs on the skid pad won’t offer enough for the typical schmo commenting on these chat threads.
i am not the biggest car person, in fact, i know very little about cars. But you guys make such entertaining videos that the cars are just the cherry on top. thanks for the great content fellas
I hope you guys realize that this car isnt the successor to the m240i from last generation. New 2 series coupe and cabrio are still rwd and will have 6 cylinders.
The one I’m getting is the Seat Leon Cupra ST, same engine like in the S3, more space, sportier driving and cheaper, too bad it’s only available in Europe.
I love the 2 series as a regular car, interior is nice, looks is actually ok to (me) and performance is fine. But obviously as a BMW this doesn’t belong at all in the BMW family.
It's even ugly as a normal car , it looks cheap and like it was stung by a bee, literally only sold for the badge, you won't be sacrificing much going even with a base genesis or a nicely equipped mazda

3 years later I bought the CLA35. I was about to throw down for the S3 and on a whim I walked across the street to the Benz dealer in LA and took a look just for kicks. I was blown away at how nice it looked in comparison. The interior is amazing, a level above the Audi. Drive wise the Merc felt more engaging and even felt faster. I threw my money at the salesman and I can't believe I was even considering the S3, I felt like it was the boobie prize for someone that couldn't find an RS3. It bored me. The BMW was never considered, I don't think anyone is considering that turdmobile... FUGLEY! Dollar per dollar the CLA35/45 is Mercedes best car right now and easily the best in the price range in the last decade.
What I got out of this video for the BMW, if your going to buy the BMW M235i, just buy a Mini Cooper 5dr or Clubman instead. Same car, but better in all ways.
Hallo, thank you for your honest review about this "m235i" I own a bmw m140i and as I work as a developer for the car industry, I have to say you totally right. The BMW is a really good car and you can go very very fast on backroads with this car. A normal driver would be much faster with the new compared to the m240i. But you definitely miss the thrill of driving. This car is so boring. In fact you can do nothing wrong in this car. Even when you get off the throttle in the middle of a corner that you drive quite on the limit, the tail will do nothing. And poweroversteering.... haha, you can forget about that. Its a very good car and for probably 90% of the people who will drive it, it is the more safety and faster car than the old one. But for real driving pleasure, this is definitely the wrong car. That's a shame, because with new generation of the 3 series bmw is back at it's best. And you guys really can look forward to drive the new 4 series!! Yes, I dont like the grill, but it drives amazing!
Full confirmation that M now stands for Marketing alone. It's staggering that the 235 has a BMW badge let alone the M one. This is what happens when you quit motorsports. Sometimes, it's more than titles and winning. It's R&D for your product line many decades in advance. And the conviction for sticking to the core identity - the death of BMW really. I fully resonate with Thomas on that video above. It's sadness more than anything else.
I’ve got a 2014 S3 - Java Green, it’s on a PFL but still seems a great car (virtual cockpit would be nice next time) BMW 240i is a solid car but can’t see many people wanting X-Drive, people pick Audi for the straight line and Bmw for the cornering character (the new models haven’t gone down well in the Uk going to front wheel or x drive), 👌🏻 I’ve never considered Mercedes I’m not a big fan of the media displays/controls, I think they look nicer on the outside than the inside, I’m going to stick with S3 for now, a software / dsg map brings them up too 360-380bhp

You guys get some super strange spec S3! In Europe it has 300+ hp (usually dyno 10hp over). We can also hide the center display at a touch of a button.
The screen can go away on theirs too. That’s a thing everywhere I believe they made a mistake.
I believe the newer S3's above 2018 removed that feature due to backup camera regulations. So now the button is mapped to an on/off switch.
Yeah, for some reason the S3/Golf R in North America is detuned (EUDM has 300hp+, USDM models used to be 292hp but have gone down to 288hp for some reason???)
You should repeat this video next year with the refreshed S3
Mercedes Benz u stole ma heart. Greetings and lots of love from Namibia Windhoek
Bmw for life
That 2 Series Gran Coupe has caused me to bite through my tongue so many times because 3 of my friends have them, and talk endlessly about how great their car is and what a great driver's car it is. And me and my G20 M340i have to just sit there and try not to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind about those Mini Coopers in Drag.
“There’s no aspect of driving this car that I enjoy” already thought that BMW did something very wrong building this car but daaamn haha
Here in Europe now it's fucking impossible for carmakers to produce 6.2 liter supercharged V8 engines plus "only RWD" in bigger numbers, like in the new Corvette C8 for example... ;-)
North Americans sometimes really are like dumb little children, who still don't get it that things are changing, because they still want to have what they are used, but what has getting quite impossible in the rest of the world.
SJW Maniac Ok 👍
SJW Maniac Dude nobody is reading that, this is TH-cam.
@@pinkyless exactly nobody is reading all that
My E46 broke down so i sit here in the train watching this video. That intro let me laugh too loud 😂
The BMW 2 went from having one of the best front ends in the lineup to...this....a Kia
I just love the CLA, such a sexy car. Any CLA AMG is on my to buy list (goal being the 45S ofc) AND it's not that pricey in the EU (C43 =~ CLA45S)
i am not the biggest car person, in fact, i know very little about cars. But you guys make such entertaining videos that the cars are just the cherry on top. thanks for the great content fellas
Totally agree with Thomas, BMW ruined the M235i with 4cylinder engine and front wheel bias. Not a drivers car anymore.
And then they have the audacity to put an M badge on it! How far can you water sown a permeance trim level.
@@Tempsho well they even screwed up looks of the M cars, just look at the new M3/M4 front end grille, we're back to butt ugly Bangle era. 🤦♂️
Cla and S3 are both 4 cylinders and front wheel bias😂😂😂
@@Marcus-wp8zf yeah, but Audi and Merc were never "the" performance drivers cars, bmw was. Fwd is ok on a $15K Kia, not on a premium german car brand.
I hope you guys realize that this car isnt the successor to the m240i from last generation. New 2 series coupe and cabrio are still rwd and will have 6 cylinders.
This is one of your best videos to date. Really enjoyed it, good job
Love you guys!! Glade to see ya back in action again!! You guys have the best intros of any TH-camr!!
THATS CLA INTERIOR IS INSANELY SICK THAT SCREEN IS EVERYTHING
that m235i ain’t it man i hope someone at bmw watch this review. great video👍🏻👍🏻
BMWs are my favorite cars but that 2 series looks like like a Hyundai. I’ll keep my F30 3 series over that.
Don't insult Hyundai
Don’t talk to me and my Veloster N ever again!
Bruh Hyundai is great now
"And i'm JAAAAmess." -killer. Love you guys.
For nearly 3 years now, my 2018 Audi S3 still puts a smile on my face.
Love my S3 too. Stage 2 E85 now
I've been looking for an RS3 and they are like unicorns lol. I ended up snagging a '21 A35. I'm happy but I still want an RS3 lol.
@@mikehawk120 there’s about 6 in my area for sale. Thinking about snagging one. 53k
4:32 you can feel the disappointment

1-2 punch right there
The one I’m getting is the Seat Leon Cupra ST, same engine like in the S3, more space, sportier driving and cheaper, too bad it’s only available in Europe.
Thomas, a great statement about the FWD BMW with that T-shirt :D
"His body is shutting down!" Loved it! Excellent acting!!! Thank you, keep it coming.
I love the 2 series as a regular car, interior is nice, looks is actually ok to (me) and performance is fine. But obviously as a BMW this doesn’t belong at all in the BMW family.
At least it doesn't belong as a M car.
It's even ugly as a normal car , it looks cheap and like it was stung by a bee, literally only sold for the badge, you won't be sacrificing much going even with a base genesis or a nicely equipped mazda
Simple design of the s3 is always my favourite
I didn’t know there’s a “C63 Amg Bi-Turbo 4matic plus” 😂
"4 door coupe" 😅😅
Ye I think they fucked up C63s are all RWD
@@farbodniazi6504 wrong
aka _sphen all c63’s are rwd, new ones will most likely be awd but thats not out yet.
@@aka_sphen872 I don't think anything I said was wrong
I’ll take the S3 exterior with the MB interior. Forget the BMW
Man!... Wait for the new S3!!
In 2 more years!
kartik bitra it's an evolution remember. Audi remakes are always subtle
Without a doubt, you guys are the most hilarious, creative and honest car reviewers on the Tube!! I became a subscriber today!! I'm a 30 year career car guy...(who also happens to be an award-winning Los Angeles based jazz musician) But I've been an auto enthusiast my entire life!!
You guys deliver the goods, good, bad or ugly while(st) never taking yourselves too seriously.... or seriously at all which is just fine with me!! I can't wait till your next shoot! You've got the best job in the world, mine are a distant second!!
The BMW looks like a Dodge dart from the side🤣🤣
Jake G More like a KIA.. If they black out the grills
14:15 everyone got a third🤣
I would get an RS3 instead, especially if we got the hatch over here. Great review, glad to have y'all back!
What I got out of this video for the BMW, if your going to buy the BMW M235i, just buy a Mini Cooper 5dr or Clubman instead. Same car, but better in all ways.
the CLA designer thing was fun as hell
The BMW looks like a van...
Love the intro!
Personally i would just get a Ford Focus RS, which might not be not as fast but surely is most fun!
have a nice day! :)
That bmw is so uglyyy
Ford focus rs have more hp than those three.

Ahhh yess, a long throttle house video
Thoroughly entertaining video. Totally enjoyed watching.
Woo hoo! Throttle House to save the day! Awesome videos, guys. You’ve been killing it lately. 👍
Totally agreed with u guys.A channel with a taste.
I used to dislike the CLA because it lacked the looks for the pricetag but this one looks sick!
Hallo, thank you for your honest review about this "m235i"
I own a bmw m140i and as I work as a developer for the car industry, I have to say you totally right.
S3 clearly the best looking
Agreed. It’s a timeless design whereas the CLA will look extremely dated in 10 years.
@@cjmhall yes, timeless, looks like shit.
Nope
Full confirmation that M now stands for Marketing alone. It's staggering that the 235 has a BMW badge let alone the M one. This is what happens when you quit motorsports. Sometimes, it's more than titles and winning. It's R&D for your product line many decades in advance. And the conviction for sticking to the core identity - the death of BMW really. I fully resonate with Thomas on that video above. It's sadness more than anything else.
Super funny intro. Curious tough at the Mercedes price point the RS3 would be a better adversary
Thomas looking fine af in this video, love the hair. Keep up the awesome intros
I’ve got a 2014 S3 - Java Green, it’s on a PFL but still seems a great car (virtual cockpit would be nice next time)
BMW 240i is a solid car but can’t see many people wanting X-Drive, people pick Audi for the straight line and Bmw for the cornering character (the new models haven’t gone down well in the Uk going to front wheel or x drive), 👌🏻
I’ve never considered Mercedes I’m not a big fan of the media displays/controls, I think they look nicer on the outside than the inside,
I’m going to stick with S3 for now, a software / dsg map brings them up too 360-380bhp
The best choice
Another amazing review. Thanks for always putting our spectacular content. I look forward to every video you guys make. You should have 3 million subs. Way better then 90% of other auto channels!
The interior of the CLA is drop dead gorgeous
Chima Chinda It really is but unfortunately allot of the new Mercedes models creak and rattle, just like they said theirs did!
Woah, they could say "m235i gran coupe" without gagging! Good on you for giving it a try
S3 is still the most handsome car, like a human body, a true embodiment of handsomeness in a human way
If only the dashboard were a little bit less cheap.
