Huawei is killing Apple in China: the Kirin chip, the Mate-60, government iPhone bans, and now Pura

  • Apple (AAPL) is getting hammered from all sides in China, the world's largest smartphone market. Huawei, its chief rival in China, shocked the market last year by producing a 7-nanometer chip and a new line of smart devices called the Mate 60.
The Mate 60 immediately grabbed market share from Apple, leading to a sharp drop in their Q1 results.
Then, the Chinese government announced that iPhones would be banned for use by government officials, including municipal-level authorities and agencies, and state-owned firms.
Huawei's new Pura-70 is aimed at Apple's high-end users. Typically smartphone manufacturers compete against Apple on the basis of price: comparable features, but at steep discounts to the iPhone. But Huawei's new offering is priced almost the same, and features state-of-the-art camera aperture technology that is novel to smartphones. They have priced the -70 at just a slight discount to the iPhone 15, but at parity for the premium models. Their pricing strategy implies that Huawei's Pura-70 is equal on the basis of features and quality, and they are going after the highest-margin consumers.
Apple now faces formidable competition from Huawei on the mass-market side with the Mate-60, on the high end with the Pura-70, while under the cloud of the Chinese government's restrictions on iPhone purchases by government employees, state-owned firms--and anyone who hopes to do business with them.

I wish I could buy a Huawei phone here, but I can't because it is banned here. Back in the 1980s, the US govt tried to ban Japanese automobiles, because they were inexpensive and very high quality. The US automotive industry lobbied congress to put tariffs on Japanese automobiles, and they did. People still bought them, because they were reliable and inexpensive.
Now instead of allowing in competition, they just ban it. They banned Huawei 5G telecomm equipment, Huawei phones, and now they are putting trade barriers on Chinese EVs. Trade barriers for Chinese EVs isn't enough, so they are trying to ban the import of those EVs. They are trying to ban TikTok.
In the media, you just see a lot of anti-China, and anti-Chinese hysteria. They are just painting a negative image on Chinese people, and China as a whole.
I don't see why people in China should buy American brands. In my humble opinion, they should stop buying US brands, because they are funding these politicians in the US by making US equity markets go up. These politicians want to play on the anti-China hysteria to win points, so the people of China shouldn't be funding people that harm them and their interests.

Mainland Chinese don't fancy American product, if we talk about automobile, they preferred German brand. As for handset, they are definitely shifting away from Apple but still there some rich punk wanted it as symbol of status/wealth. Just like my niece studying at Taiwan, buying the latest Apple model because she can't lose face to her schoolmates.
The only thing that mainland Chinese obsessed with America is living the "America dream". All rural folk insist on their next of kin to migrate into "Mei Guo" because they were too indoctrinated or brainwashed as country of opportunities and wealth.
Our society are so skewed that mainland Chinese wanted to migrate into America while American wanted to leave for China and Asia, Malaysian wanted to leave for Singapore, Singaporean wanted to leave for Canada + Australia, Australian wanted to leave for HK + China, Hongkies wanted to leave for Canada.
People from Asia wanted to leave for the West but not knowing today isn't 60-80' where Asian is welcome(as cheap labor). What's the purpose living at hostility country and getting humiliated daily.

If you notice the US is constantly condemning China's government for funding companies like Huawei and BYD because it is supposedly unfair to western counterparts, while at the same time sanctioning Chinese companies into oblivion every chance they get. The logic there is to forcefully keep China's technological development behind mainly for military reasons but others as well. This has been openly admitted by US govt. officials.
At the same time the US is giving out billions of $ in funding to companies like Samsung, Tesla, Apple etc. to build factories in the US.
It almost seems like the so called 'free market' where governments should not meddle into corporations is not actually working and it's only promoted when it is successfully working to oppress the rest of the world and benefit the US.
Gone is the cheap Chinese labor they were feely exploiting for so long. Also because of the hegemony the US had for so long over technology, the western corpos became complacent and innovation stagnated quite a bit. This all could have been different if the US ever gave thought about working with other nations in solidarity instead of sabotage and imperialism, but that could be considered socialism and as everyone in the US knows 'Socialism is when no iPhone'. :D
PS: apologies for the long comment.

The biggest difference is that they were much more inovative, so you got something that was actually worth that much money. For cheaper devices Huawei had the sub brand Honor, which they were forced to sell after the sanctions. Honor has now also become a premium brand. The reason Huawei is now reclaiming the top spot is because they now have access to chips of their own making.

Huawei used to be a phone company. After the sanction, Huawei is now a car company, semiconductor company, AI company, Internet cloud company competing direct against Tesla, ASML, TSMC, QUALCOMM, Google, Apple, Samsung, Nvidia...and even Bluetooth. Huawei used to be the customer for some of these companies. This is what would happen when all you do is rely on government help competition instead of innovation. Just like EV, people are forced to buy Tesla because they have no other good choices. But that may not last if Tesla doesn't improve.

To be fair, Apple did a huge amount of self-damage by trying to sell "Make in India" iPhones in China instead of Chinese-made iPhones. That's a slap in the face to the country that produces the most iPhones at the highest quality, whereas India is known not to produce high quality electronics. Apple was roundly lambasted for this, and there's no good explanation for it. Apple could have, and should have, shipped the Indian phones to the USA, Canada, Australia & the UK where they'd have been far better received.
Also, the Kirin 9000s in the Huawei Mate 50 is a 5 nm chip made by tweaking 7 nm tools. It performs like other 5nm chips by Samsung, so it's a legitimate 5 nm chip. US chip sanctions were supposed to limit China to 14 nm, and a 5 nm chip is 3 generations beyond that. It was supposed to be "impossible".

Whether the river needs fish is completely a different matter, as long as Tim Cook still wants to increase its Indian production to 25% from the current 5%. A more pressing problem for Apple is how to arrest the sliding sales of iPhones, not only in the Chinese domestic market but also worldwide. To be fair, Apple is fully capable of all the things Huawei did for the Mate60 and the new Pura70 had it really focused on product development and innovation. However, Apple was too confident of its brand name to the point of complacency and so it has only itself to blame for the current crisis it is facing right now.

You won’t be able to buy any affordable items in US because of China’s “overcapacity” issue according to Yellen. Americans will be forced to buy overpriced items in order to support those politicians’ donors. On the other hand, China won’t be able to buy things that they needed from the US because of the US politicians said so. Again, how do these politicians expect these companies to grow if they’re not able to sell their products to the biggest consumer market in the world is really beyond me. Of course the politicians allowed these companies to sell things that the Chinese companies have the capacity and capability to produce, then why would any company want to buy it from the US for at least 2 times the price? Are these politicians able to subsidize these companies forever because of the blockade?
