I purchased my first Bryston in 1979. A modest 3B. I have owned virtually every piece of equipment they have made ever since along with their various Model T speakers. They have always supported upgrades over the years and only once had to use their 20 year full warranty. I can’t say enough good things about their products, engineering and staff. I have experimented with other brands but have always returned to Bryston. You will never regret buying Bryston. ❤

44 years ago? That is only half of Doc Brown’s 88 magic number for Back to the Future.
This program by Bryston is simply awesome that they make such services available to their dedicated users. Kudos to Bryston.
If you don’t own a Bryston
It’s possibly to improve your Brand X gear yourself. With a simple digital capacitor “checker” a user can determine which capacitors in vintage equipment need replacing. It’s not a really difficult nor is it an expensive way to return a quality vintage device to fine performance levels. Other components may be a different issue but capacitors are not too difficult to replace.
Great show and Great Show Shirt this AM.

I work at an audio repair shop in Austin Texas callled Telstar Services and the technicians there restore and upgrade old gear from tube consoles to home theater avr’s! It is amazing what people bring in to get repaired every day and very surprising it’s mostly veterans who bought their gear in the service. I think old veterans are probably one of the biggest audiophile communities around!

Took advantage of this program to refresh (Tier 1 and 3) a pair of 3B NRB power amps that I've had since the mid-90s. They weren't in "terrible" shape, but it sure is nice to have them performing better than ever with the upgraded output stages.

While the Bronx is more downtown and city-like, Brooklyn is known for its enriched cultural influences, art scene, and independent, entrepreneurial spirit. You know I was uh watching some TH-cam videos of a person that lives in the Bronx (Batel Skater is her channel) and uh she claims ... it's rough there but ... I mean, maybe it's all fiction. Maybe it's not as rough as she suggests. Anyway there's no Audio system in her place. No music and she blocks people so don't suggest Steve's videos you know.

I've never been brand loyal, but Bryston has won me over. The company is awesome and admirable in so many ways! Others should follow their footsteps.
Some time ago I found second hand BHA-1 in mint condition for 1000€! It's a 2019 model too. Never looked at other brands ever since, that thing makes anything sing. It's currently running my HD800S and Genelec 8330s, what a deal for 1000€!!

I took advantage of Bryston's restoration service about 7 years ago (before it had a name). My 23-ish yr old 4B-ST was misbehaving, so I sent it in. (shipping cross country is the most painful part). But back then I think I paid about $650 for all new electrolytic caps replacement and some startup circuitry upgrade, and new bias pots, I think. One had gone noisy. Now, with all new modern caps installed, I'm pretty sure my amp might sound better than new! It's been in daily use for 7 years, and still sounds perfect! The old ST version is a slightly bright and lively amp, best suited to speakers that need that. I also have a newer 4B-SST, and it's top end is more neutral, The SST sounds better with my Tannoys.

Bought a used traded in Bryston 4B ST a few years back from a Audio dealer and it still had 3 years warranty left on the 20 years. About 2 years later one channel was going into protect so I called Bryston up and they said to ship it to them for repair. One catch was I had to purchase the proper box from them to ship it in for near $50. Once I factored in the shipping cost it was as cheap to make a road trip there ( I live about 2-21/2 hours away ) and drop it off which is what I did. Two weeks later it was sent back to me in working order. Two months later the Amp started to do the same thing, so once again back it went ( this time in the box they sent it to me in ). Two weeks later back it came and has been fine ever since. About a year later I purchased a used floor Demo Pre Amp BP-6 from my local Audio dealer and the sales guy I always dealt with said the Pre had about 11 years warranty left so we made the deal. I started checking the date of manufacture a few days later to find out it only had about 1 year left. It was an honest mistake by my salesman and he felt horrible and told me if I wanted to return it I could or he could adjust the price. I told him I would think about it.The next day he called and said if I want to keep the Pre Amp that he spoke to Bryston and they would give me in writing a full 20 year warranty from my purchase date as long as I was the owner. That's great service from Bryston. I sill have both the Pre and the Amp.

I applaud manufacturers that do as Bryston does, offer customers an aftersale upgrade path. My Rogue 99 (now the Super Magnum) preamp has been back to Rogue twice in the 25 years I have owned it. Those parts upgrades have made a really good preamp become an exceptional one. The total I spent on both upgrades, $1200, could never have delivered comparable performance if I had traded the preamp in and added that $1,200 to replace it.

Back in 1999/2000, I bought a B-60 (I think at Sound by Singer), a Rega Planet 2000 and a pair of B&W CDM1SE speakers. Now in 2023/24, all of this continues to be my main system and still sounds like new…..with only various turntables coming and going through the years. The B-60 went back to Bryson twice during the 20 year warranty period for minor issues….bad selector switch and volume pot. I could afford to upgrade and if I had a larger space, might consider doing so but so far, it seems my carefully made decision was the right one….Charles Lloyd “Canto” was played on repeat for a week to break it all in :-)

As chassis and transformers are the most expensive items in an amp, and also the ones that don't deteriorate, this is a brilliant idea that more manufacturers should consider. Also, it cuts out the dealer markup! Of course, not many brands are around long enough for a program like this, and it does put a premium on serviceability of the original design.

My only problem with Bryston is that their stuff is laboratory-grade analytical. Many don’t like that. It is, however, a good complement to warmish speakers. The DQ10s were old school in tone, so yeah.

Thanks for the review. Despite never owning Bryston gear, I've listened to their equipment plenty at high end audio shops I frequented. I thought their build quality was excellent and their warranty was nearly impossible to beat.
The review is more about Bryston's rebuild program than anything else--which is fine, since it really is a good deal.
For sound, the review came up short as it turned into more of a Maggie LRS/Rel Sub vs KEF LS50 review.
It would've been more interesting to me if the review compared the sound of the rebuilt vintage piece to a modern Bryston.

    @tomsherwood4650 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can usually accept that old solid state gear will not suffer the same problems as tube gear. Still, some of the caps may or may not be deteriorated. The silicon transistors ought not have any issues unless someone has "blown up" the amp or something. Any old gear with mechanical controls may need those cleaned or replaced. Some old resistors can change value and some are stable. Depend on what kind they are. But it is theoretically possible for a 30-40 year old solid state amp to not be any different in function as compared to new.

I bought my B-60P (includes MM phono stage) in 2000. I’m never selling it! I paid $1900 and it was worth it! Built like a tank! Not the last word in transparency due to the volume pot but with the pre-out / main in connections you can always add a better preamp. The optional phono stage is very good but can also be beaten by a good tube design. Yes, it comes with some compromises but as my back up amp it has never let me down.

It's always a good thing when a company supports older products... Like Mazda doing refurbs on the MX5! However... They replace the outputs with a non original ONsemi 21193/94 pairs. A very good transistor considering what's available these days. They cost about €10 each. The costliest parts are the hardware: pots, fascia etc, super cheap speaker posts maybe not. Labor for testing and install will far outweigh parts cost. What I'm saying is they're making a fairly decent profit. And now they have a nice stash of unobtanium Motorola output devices.

When you buy a Bryston product, the serial number is listed as sold. For the next 20 years whoever owns it gets the warranty. It doesn't matter how many people have owned it. I'm not sure if the warranty is the same for digital products.

I've been trying to contact Bryston for almost a year via phone and email and have not received any response from them. I have a 4B ST under warranty and just want them to send me the box ($75) so I can ship it to them to be biased and checked over.
After trying 5 or 6 times via the service area of their website I gave up until I saw this vid. Anyone here know how to get me in contact with someone at Bryston to get warranty service???

Not sure you had any success to this point but I too experienced the same. Reason…the person who you would normally deal with has been on a LOA. My persistent emails finally paid off. My 3B is now in their hands but lead time I’m told is about 6 weeks. Good luck.

I brought a Harman Kardon Citation (5.1) and took it from a brick-with-a-click to a full recap. Paid a couple hundred for the 60lb beast and $450 for the recap . . . 60 parts swapped, but not the transistors. I think there are about 50 Toshiba output transistors total . . . hooked it up to a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10's and at 9 meters no problem dancing above 90dB . . . it will not exceed Mach 10.2 without blowing speaker fuses . . . but clear as a bell, live sound, at 90dB.
The designer, Steve Mantz, does full restores at his L.A. shop, but I found a local shop that did excellent work.
