  • We all love Pokemon, but I'm sure I'm not the first person to notice that these little guys share a striking resemblance...to slaves. Think about it. They're caught against their will and forced to work. But can this revelation teach us something about freedom...and ourselves?

    So while I appreciate the very important relevant message I gotta argue my Poke pals corner here. So in the show it talks about how wild Pokemon are often jealous of human trained Pokemon and even Damian's Charmander is shown to "release itself" in the episode where Ash catches a Charmander. My thoughts are, Wild pokemon want to be caught but they don't want to be caught by just anyone they want to be caught by trainers who are strong and are going to help them evolve (hence you don't see a lot of fully evolved pokemon in with wild). Pokemon and humans have always lived together since the beginning of Pokemon lore, they have a symbiotic relationship and so a wild Pokemon will make a trainer fight it and even try to escape to the best of its ability from the poke ball until it is caught by a worthy trainer. One final piece of evidence for this is that it is only when a bond between a human and a pokemon is so strong that a pokemon can access mega evolution which makes your every day pokemon as strong as legends. These fact's I believe demonstrate the will and freedom of Pokemon. .....but then I have to say that, I have 802 of the guys sitting in Pokemon bank filling up my living dex..... gotta feel justified.

      I totally hear what you're saying. I knew there would be a lot of comments about pokemon wanting to be with trainers and whatnot. And I know that can certainly be argued. The idea for the video was to create an allegory through the pokemon universe for real life. Because sometimes we need something that we know and understand to get to a deeper meaning. That was the point of the video, regardless of whether or not pokemon are really free.

      The way I see it, it depends on the pokemon. Some pokemon want to be stronger, and see humans as the way to get that; others see humans as the weakling's way out. Then there's bred pokemon that live their whole life as a trainer's pokemon, and the pokemon who lives in the PC. (If I remember right, any pokemon in a PC in season 1 of the anime went to Professor Oak's house)
      I personally rotate my Pokemon, keeping families in the same PC box, and eggs in another, but that's just me.
      But then, that's just my two cents into the conversation.

      Big Cat In episode 11 of Pokémon, Charmander literally leaves Damian without Damian’s permission. Charmander had a pokeball but it left anyway, so the brainwashing shit is stupid. Pikachu revolts” is an entire episode about rebellious Pokémon.
      Pokémon DO have to consent to an extent to be used in battle. I love how you call the idea stupid when you give an idea infinitely more stupid that is LITERALLY not true from literally just episode 11

    Actually, gladiators rarely ever killed each other, it would be very expensive for the owner. So a policy was set in place declaring that if a gladiator killed another gladiator, the survivor's owner would have to pay the cost of the fallen slave, so killing other gladiators was very uncommon.

    ok, this ignores the facts that pokemon also deliberately 'attack' trainers, for the reason they _want_ to go with them; secondly, we've seen multiple cases where pokemon can deliberately come out of their pokeballs, or even stay in them when trainers try to call them out, if they don't agree with what is going on; third, _they are perfectly capable of disobeying (and do), or even fully turning on their trainers_
    yes, there are doubtlessly different/bad cases, but generally, what is described here is not what occurs
    I'm not gonna touch the actual intent of the video, though; that's something else entirely

    • @MajkaSrajka
      @MajkaSrajka 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Look, children animes are so off the grid that they don't care about the rules they put in place for the rule of cool.
      As the video shows, there are plenty of arguments for both sides.
      Especially when creators get self-aware and try to smoke some bullshit to cover that - and the smash "no, they are living in a mansions when they are in a pokeball" shows that they see that too.
      And c'mone, the show has like 5 million episodes anyway, if you pick rule of cool out of all of them then you can literally argue anything.
      They make no sense, and were never meant to be. Human brain as always seem to find meaning and correlation in even most meaningless and uncorrelated things.
      That is, if you want to go "but my arguments say that" and "but creator in appendix #523.1/A43 said that they actually like being kicked around".

    • @error404usernamecannotbefo8
      @error404usernamecannotbefo8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OmegaUltima Yes that is correct, in the TV shows Pikachu and other Pokèmon outright just attack their trainers or other humans that they disagree with, if Ash accidentally started treating Pikachu in a way that isn't right, Pikachu attacks him (I don't remember much of the shows nowadays but I'm sure Pikachu does try to keep Ash from making choices that make him feel like a slave, and some backstory say that Pikachu didn't like being in a Pokèball and Ash never forces him to be in it all the time)

    • @shade08538
      @shade08538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Error 404 Username cannot be found Episode 11 captures this perfectly. Charmander, *without Damien’s permission,* left Damian of his own accord. So Pokémon do have to consent to being in a pokeball

      I dunno, a slave is still a slave even if he or she is living in a grand, spacious, magnificent castle. It doesn't matter if you live in a castle or in a small hole in the ground. If you can't choose what your life is going to be, if you can't choose what you can or can't do, if each and every aspect of your being is in control of another person -- and it doesn't matter if that person is actually nice and listens to you -- then guess what? You're a slave.

    1. pokemon can leave their pokeball on their own whenever they want. 2. even if you catch a pokemon it doesnt obey everything you say, they can ignore every command (ash's charizard for example). 3. pokemon fighting is a choice for the pokemons, they dont have to listen to their trainer. 4. in the wild pokemon fight as well, hunter pray relationship. 5. pokemon are not slaves. evidence: they have the freedom to do what they want, pokemon get treated well (food, home, love etc), pokemon like battleling. sorry for this long text but i have been through this crap way too much. if i pokemon doesnt want to fight it will not, they are not brainwashed or anything after capture, done.

    1) When a pokemon goes to a pokecenter they don't get injected they get immediately restored.
    2)Pokemon have free will. They can choose not to obey their partner. For example a pokemon can loaf around, outright out not obey them and pretend not to listen. Can slaves do that? Nope they get beaten with a whip.
    3) ''Living a life that you choose'' Well alot of pokemon do choose to be a part of a trainers team. For example, Pikachu and Greninja.

    Warning: A wall of text approaches
    Pokemon - generally speaking - are not slaves. Good lord, people really need to stop making this claim. The Pokemon games have actually ADDRESSED the moral grays of capturing pokemon, and it's been proven that they are not slaves to humans. There are, of course, bad and downright abusive trainers who treat their pokemon like slaves, but generally speaking, this is not the case.
    First off, pokeballs are used to PROTECT pokemon and prevent them from being stolen. Pokemon generally do not appear to be severely injured even if they "faint," and they don't even seem to ACTUALLY faint since they're perfectly capable of doing things like diving underwater or flying long distances while under that status. So, that debunks the whole "physical abuse" thing. Ash has to practically FORCE his pokemon to accept "freedom" when he releases them; they generally do not want to leave him because they like him and the life they can lead with him. It also seems they have to WANT to come with a trainer, at least on some level, in order to be captured. In both the anime and games, we see countless examples of pokemon challenging trainers because they want to test if the trainer is strong enough to be "worthy" of their companionship, and there are many examples of people explaining that capturing works partly because the pokemon WANTS to go with you and partly because they're weakened. When you capture some key plot pokemon in the games, NPCs will very often tell you that the pokemon "wanted to go with you" or "is happy to be with you." In the anime, Ash often struggles to capture pokemon even when they're exhausted, just because they don't want to be caught.
    So, you can't catch a pokemon if they aren't somewhat willing to be caught, but it gets better: if a pokemon really doesn't like their trainer, they will not listen to commands. They will refuse to fight. On top of that, I'm pretty sure a pokemon would have the power to kill a human if they really wanted to. And if you go by the anime, pokemon can leave their pokeballs any time they want and can refuse to be recalled, meaning if they hate a trainer enough, they can just leave, which proves they are not slaves. There are laws in place to stop trainers from abusing pokemon, there are hospitals dedicated specifically to treating them, and most importantly, there is a cultural difference, not just for humans but for pokemon as well. Pokemon seem to ENJOY fighting just as much as the trainers do. They fight in the wild (considerably more violently than in captivity), and fighting actually makes them happy. There are values for happiness, affection and love present in the games that go up if they win fights. They enjoy fighting as long as they're with a good trainer who doesn't make them lose. They actually become happier more easily by being constantly embroiled in battle than if a trainer were to deprive them of fighting in favor of doing everything else possible to make them happier and more affectionate. You have to be nice to them to get them to like you in specific, but even if you're a dick, they'll still like their life as long as you're a successful trainer who doesn't weigh them down.
    Going by game statistics, pokemon generally enjoy a life of fighting and adventure more than they enjoy a cozy life of pampering or a "free" life. This seems to be common knowledge in the pokemon world, as many trainers (or even simple owners) will give up their pokemon to someone better-equipped to show them a a life of excitement. Of course, the adventurous badass getting free pokemon is always the protagonist, but you get the point. You can understand the culture of the pokemon world and why they - generally - aren't slaves if you just play Black and White. Yes, there are slave-like and abused pokemon, but the majority of them are anything but. Even N, who can somehow speak to pokemon, acknowledges that while there are people who abuse pokemon and treat them like slaves, there are also many good trainers whom pokemon love and willingly choose to be with. He seems surprised at how well the protagonist treats their pokemon, implying that kind of pampering (and success) is uncommon, but in the end, his conclusion seems to be that good trainers are more common than bad trainers. Thus, in general, pokemon are not slaves, and this proves they are not mentally traumatized.
    Also, the pokemon you capture either come up and attack you or literally beg to go with you 100% of the time, with the vast majority being the prior. Even if they were slaves, they'd be seriously asking for it, and getting damn good treatment on average for that kind of behavior. Dunno about you guys, but if a wild animal attacks me, I will gladly kill it rather than try to capture and befriend it.

    you can make anything sound great or horrible depending on what words you use, for example, school:
    school is a place where we send our children to expand their mind and learn the skills they will need to make it in the world. It is essential for the well being of our children, being a great place to not only learn but meet new friends and become better adapted for any new experiences they may find after its over.
    or
    school is a cage we force our children into against their will. They are forced to learn whatever it is that we want them to with little to no choice or chance of change. This barbaric practice has gone on for hundreds of years with little alterations, staying the same despite the world growing for the better around it.

    I really enjoyed this video. It's nice to see you guys covering deeper topics to make people think about the world. I really appreciate that. Anyways, on the topic that pokemon are being forcefully captured, I'm not exactly sure where I heard it from (maybe here or game theory) but pokemon want to be captured so that the trainers can help them evolve. Not many final stage pokemon are in the wild because many can't evolve past their first stage so they put up a fight with trainers. The trainers that are capable enough to capture them know how to train them. Humans have an intellect so they know how to strategize and train well. It's not so much as being forced as it is deeming a trainer worthy. As for being confined in a tiny space, pokeballs have a comfortable living space. Again I don't have on the ready sources but I will be more than happy to look them up. Thank you to whoever bothered to read this, have a great day!

    In game terms that's how things work as in the video.
    Thinking about the anime, though (not incl. Origins), many captures I know were the choice of the Pokémon itself, because the protagonists asked/offered it to join the group.
    In that matter of speaking, Pokémon personally accept/choose to be a 'slave'.

  • @jaschabull2365
    @jaschabull2365 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A couple of things this video possibly overlooked:
    First, it's debatable whether most pokémon captures really entail a poor little innocent creature minding its own business getting jumped and snatched up. Note that if you try to enter a wild area without a pokémon, you're warned it's dangerous. This implies that when a Wild Pokémon Appears, it's when a territorial beast is charging a person and ready to strike at first notice. Try going through a wild area with only a magikarp and have it only splash, and most of the time, the wild pokémon will likely still attack. Not to mention, one of the best methods of capture is putting the target to sleep, so more captures involve some human showing up and having their jigglypuff sing you a song than the human getting you curb stomped.
    Also, it's very debatable that battles are akin to real life cockfights and whatnot. Pokémon are implied to value being good at fighting on their own, and inclined to obey trainers they believe can make them better fighters. That's why they obey their captors (who were capable of defeating them) but not trainers who received them by trade (who have given them no evidence they're worth obeying unless they've earned badges, signs of having won a battle). Also, there was one anime episode in which a woman had a snubbull she didn't use in battles, wanting to protect her, but was told she was mistreating the snubbull for not giving her the battle experience she wanted. Also, considering pokémon are implied to fight each other in the wild (it's rare you'll encounter a level 1 pokémon in the wild), trainers offer them some insurance if they lose, because the wild doesn't have pokémon centres to instantly heal the defeated.
    Sure, some game mechanics are pretty messed up if you think about it (like level grinding, and possibly the PC as well), but the anime notably steers from some of those mechanics (a lot of Ash's pokémon are actually befriended, not captured, and a lot of the ones that were caught challenged Ash to catch them first rather than just getting jumped), so those arguably just exist due to game constraints. I don't think your entire argument was empty, but I just wanted to bring up a couple of things I notice a lot of people overlook when debating the ethics of pokémon training.

    Slavery and pokemon are nothing alike. 1. Pokemon fight until the faint not to the death. 2.Pokemon can escape a poke ball at will according to the anime. 3. Again according to the anime, pokemon who fight for the evil team (aka team rocket) the don't fight because the don't want to, it is because they see themselves as good. 4, pokemon want to be with trainers to get stronger. Next, when a pokemon goes into the PC they go to a place where all the other pokemon are (poke pelago).
    I am sorry but this theory has a lot of holes in it. Think of this: A wild pokemon was living peacefully until a much stronger pokemon attacked it and its friends. Along came a trainer who took in a weak pokemon, brought back to health and either that put them in the PC, a land where the are always safe and feed with many other pokemon, or the trainer put them in their party to male the pokemon as strong as it can get.
    All you have done is twist the idea of pokemon I to the idea of slavery. Why else does every pokemon in the anime so happy? And don't forget the happiness stat which in Pokemon sun and moon have many side effects and according to the dialog boxes, the do it to keep you from worrying.
    That is just a few facts that you missed when making this theory. So just understand that pokemon is not slavery.

    Addendum to this episode:
    1) Unlike human slavery, it's generally illegal to "sell" Pokemon, although trade is fine. The point is that a trainer ought to be worthy of the pokemon they catch, and they can't hold it in captivity indefinitely; if they don't want it, that pokemon must be freed (or... left in the box or something to be taken care of by a professor).
    2) "Selling" Pokemon, much like transporting human slaves as commodities, was pretty much the goal of Team Rocket, if I remember correctly. This allows shady rich people to acquire powerful (and potentially abused) pokemon with little to no effort.
    3) Pokemon were not just viewed as commodities, but also "weapons" (think: Gun-laws), which is possibly why there was a global limit of 6 pokemon per-trainer at any given time.
    4) Following the previous point, Team Plasma came in like a "righteous activist political force" with a narrative claiming to be empathizing with pokemon who have been abused, but their real intention was authoritarian: take those pokemon forceably, leaving other humans with no defenses, so that they have ALL the fire-power enough to enforce their will upon the world. In essence, despite claiming to be a force of "Freedom and Tolerance" they were essentially a tyrannical force wanting to enslave pokemon and humans both, creating a society of absolute serfdom (think: Soviet Russia). With that kind of an outlook, they would have likely treated pokemon as worse than the original trainers, often using ACTUALLY kind and empathetic people like N as "Useful Idiots" to push their agenda.
    5) The benefit of a single-trainer and no-sale pokemon is very much like domestication of animals. Sure, they are usually in captivity, but often they are not only strengthened via breeding and battle but their quality of life is generally BETTER than if they were in the wild (they might even life longer). Unlike what we do with cocks (think cock-fights), the battle generally stops before a pokemon is seriously injured (that morality is probably enforced via laws too, but that's just a speculation). In other words, trainers are essentially held responsible for how they treat their pokemon, unlike slave owners who could do whatever they wanted with their slaves.
    There's more to all this, but I think this demonstrates how Pokemon are actually "freer" than actual human slaves.

    Touching back on Ash not forcing Pikachu to battle. There was the episode where he battles Brock for the Pewter City Gym badge. When Onix was sent out to battle, Pikachu sees it's giant size and runs back to Ash trying to pick another Pokemon to battle in it's place. Ash tell's Pikachu that it's not Pidgetto's battle and sends Pikachu into battle anyway despite it not wanting to.
    Iris does the same thing with Emolga shortly after catching it. When battling against Bianca and her Minccino, Emolga keeps using Volt Switch to switch out of battle and ignoring Iris's commands making it clear that it doesn't wish to battle. Iris tries to convince Emolga that "Battling can be fun". Now the wording could be different in the JPN version. But regardless the question has to be asked. Fun for who exactly? The Pokemon getting beat down until they can't continue? Or the trainer who's shouting out orders while not directly being targeted most of the time.
