Yay!!! Were making babies!!! Most people don't know that plants lay eggs. 😊
Haha I will never not be able to think of them as eggs now :D
Hi I'm Charlene from Gympie Queensland I love watching your videos I have just recently put my plants on Moss poles my partner calls me the crazy plant lady I can't do much these days but I love potting around with my plants I love getting bargains from Bunnings do thank you very much you've helped me out a lot more than you could ever think❤
Thanks for taking the time to write a comment Charlene :) Happy growing !
I had never thought of peeling the corms.... 🤔 I will certainly doing that from now on! I'm in the U.S., so when I have my morning coffee, I sit and watch your videos. 😊
Thank you :)
Your demonstration of peeling corms is enlightening. Thanks Jan for sharing your Alocasia process from corms to seedling!
I would love to hear more about Alocasias from you :)
I found 11 corms in my polly. One died - 10 are now beautiful little pollies. I have them in fluval stratum, ready to pot up so your video came just in time. Love your videos, missed Bradley today😊
Thanks :) happy growing !
Wow Jan, your upload schedule is crazy!! I really love your videos and am always excited for a new one. Thank you for being such an enrichment to the planty community 😊
Thank you so much :)
I love alocasias thank you for showing us your tips! can't wait until tim's back garden is overrun with alocasia
I haven't tried propagating my Alocasias yet. I've only had them for just under 12 months but they are my favourite type of plant. I have 14 now. I'm just trying to keep them happy atm. A trick that I've found which is working for me is after watering I top water including their leaves on my sink. After sitting for a while I put them back in their container. My pots all have river rocks in the base of their container so after watering they drip onto the rocks then they use it like their own personal humidifier. Since doing this no more problems with overwatering and new leaves are constantly growing. I have also luckily never had pests on any of them. I think it's because I always wash their leaves when watering. Bottom watering just doesn't work for me. I did this with my plants a few months ago. Not my Alocasias but with my others. My prayer plants hated it. I have 24 different varieties. 5 of them got fungul issues almost straight away. So back to top watering. I just find my plants are happier this way. Bottom watering doesn't work for me.
Agree, bottom watering never works for me too :) and yes, keeping the leaves clean is the best pest prevention :)
Your expression when you turned the pot over and they plants fell out 🤣🤣🤣 On a side note, moist corms are really easy to peel with a textured DRY paper towel. No need to scrape, the skins just rub off in big chunks. :)
Good call :) thanks :)
I have no idea how you know the perfect time to post these videos when you live an entire world away from me, but thankkk youuu!
I have to say..the thing I love most about you..is your *she will be right* ..😂@ you live dangerously..you don't take everything too seriously although you love your plants..I really love that 👍👏
People have the tendency to overcomplicate things & turn it into a stressful hobby by pretending they are performing open brain surgery when they repot a plant ... I want this to be fun & enjoyable... so glad that attitude translates on camera :)
@@sydneyplantguy lmao @ brain surgery 😂..and pests..you just go *oh crap,pests..kill em*..not throw everything out due to cross contamination change clothes between plants..omfg..I'd give up if I did that..love the attitude 👍👏😁
Exactly my thoughts, people make this plant journey to be too much
Alocasias are my favourite genus, so I love every single video you make about them ❤
Thanks :) definitely one of my least favourite to look after but when they are happy they are some of the most stunning plants :)
I was just looking up best ways to propagate alocasias, what good timing this video!
Perfect timing :)
I'm currently propagating a ton of corms I've found, now I'm contemplating digging them up and scraching off the skin 😂 thanks for another lovely video! 💚🫶🌱 The variegation on that momma plant ooo 😍
I don’t think it’s necessary :) but maybe try it next time :)
I just bought a regal shield alocasia that was suffering from the coming winter in a temperate climate. It was heavily discounted because of it's appearance. I'm going to force dormancy for the winter as I don't have a lot of space for it right now. I was able to collect almost a dozen corms that I'll propagate in the meantime.
Corm is just the cutest word
Just repotted my pink dragon alocasia for the first time and found 9 corms! So excited to grow more babies 😍
Lots of babies to come :) happy growing !
I absolutely love that you speak to us like we’re there 😅❤
Also, I propagate my comms either moss too or stratum but that’s more expensive 😂. I have used pon to propagate them as well as all of my plants are slowly going to semi hydro❤
I love the Regal Sheilds ❤. I have a baby one which the leaves are a little bigger than the ones in this video but I bought a bigger one the other day from Bunnings as well which I will put them together into Leca 😊.
Also your voice and accent is so lovely
Thanks :)
Loving your energy and enthusiasm. Definitely emulating your work on my own journey. Bravo! 🙌🏾
Thank you:)
My little one just watched this video as she has some corms in perlite that’s sprouting, we enjoyed this video
I tried this method and the contents of my little propogation box totally rotted within a day 😳 Am I totally dense and it needed to be vented? I just used moist perlite and the corms.
You’ve got me hooked now! I have one little Thai Con and hopefully a Crème Brulle tomorrow! (If that’s even a ‘thing’). I’ve got potting mix ingredients literally EVERYWHERE and can’t wait to start making my first moss poles!!!
….I’m even selling furniture to make room for my plants!!! 😃
I have had no luck with corms but will keep trying. 🌱
Maybe the peeling helps :)
@@sydneyplantguy I peeled! I used perlite in a shallow dish though (with dome). Next time, I will try sphagnum moss in a grow tub.
Soo cool! Learned a lot about those gorgeous Alcasia corms! I'll have to see if I can encourage friends that may have them to see if they're willing to get a little dirty and find corms for other parts of their home.
LOVE the videos!
Thank you :)
I have little experience with moss poles and figure YOU are my best source of useful information. How do you manage the pole training process when the plant is too small for a heavy or large enough pot?
Great video! (You have a stick on your hat just there, did you know? JK😂) I'm wanting do to something similar... hoping Tim and you do a up video to show an outside alocasia garden. I love to see the progress! Thank you! 😊
Thanks :) we certainly will:)
Jan I've been cooking up some pudding of my own and it's pretty sweet. I think I had less than a 50% success rate of growing them in a pot, so I just threw the rest into a plastic container and forgot about them until now 😅 they're loving the humidity
Didn't bother peeling the corms because it was too difficult but maybe I'll try soaking them from now on
Thats cool. The regal shield that had no attention, just in the mix set aside did great. It's like finding the best veggies growing in the compost heap 😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉❤
Love this video you make propagation look so easy!
I prop Alocasia but have not peeled. I will try this. Thank you. Love all your videos and appreciate you!
Also, about merch-yes I will purchase with logo and may I suggest some of your go to statements such as, “The proof is in the pudding.”
I'm not lazy, I like to live on the edge! 🤣
I got my first alocasias this week and got corns out of all 3 of them!!!! This video came out at a great time 🥹
Hello Jan, how do you know which side of the corm to put up? The pointy bit or the round bit (if they have any…)? I noticed that I put some upside down, they grew eventually but much slower so I want to avoid that next time 😅
I put the pointy bit up :) You can usually tell by the way the corm was attached to the original plant. The pointy but makes it's way to the surface to sprout :)
Very cool video, Jan. I just repotted our 'Regal Shield' and the forms were everywhere. While I knew they propagated that way, I learned something new today. I will try the peel method next time, what a great discovery.
Yeah mine had so many!! After I took out a few I had to give up & just kept the rest in the pot :D Hope this method works for you:)
@@sydneyplantguy I'd like to give it a try. Our regal shield had corms growing out of the drainage holes of the pot, it was so root bound.
Thanks again Jan on yr progress format. You do the hard work for me. 😅
Thanks :)
I love fluval for corms. I also like to soak them for a bit to remove the skin. It will come off so easy. Fluval can be found at the aquarium stores or Amazon here in the states. Not sure about Australia. Happy growing from Florida!
Thanks :) great tips. Only ever seen Americans use fluval ... will see if it's even available here :)
@@sydneyplantguy game changer my friend. 💚
Love the nature so much...
I've made your plant mix love it so does the plants I've planted thankyou
Happy growing :)
This is my first year propogating corms (I just repotted my alocasias so have about 20 corms in total). How damp do you normally keep the moss? I want to create enough humidity (I'm in the UK and we have terrible weather right now), but don't want to risk the corms rotting. As we don't have much heat at the moment I'm putting the containers near the bathroom radiator at night - where there is a little bit of warmth but not too much - and during the day they're on a south facing window sill to get as much natural light as possible. A few of them are starting to show signs of life, although it's only been 3 weeks so far.
I have had great success with fluval, no messy roots, a heat mat and light, they are so quick
I’ve heard about fluval but never seen it available/being used in Australia :O
Thank you for sharing this knowledge! What substrate mix do you use for Alocasias?
My aroid mix :) tutorial linked in description:)
@@sydneyplantguy TY!
They are beautiful ,sadly mine are never too happy..
Good Luck with all these future ones.
💚🌿🌵🍀💚
Mine only gotten happy once I put them in the garden or greenhouse :)
I'm currently doing this in preparation for new fencing going up in the front of our property. I have some Sarian and regal shields I'm carefully multiplying.
I hope some of my corms throw some verigated variants at me! My Sarian throws corms like crazy
🤞🤞
Love watching the Video and your selfironie
Thank you:)
Hi there! Love your videos. What's the plant on the table behind you please?
Hi Jan, do you also have Alocasia 'Stingray'? They are quite interesting looking and multiply a lot...
I don't :)
I've found fluval is the best. When you repot, do you save the soil or why did you have that soil 2 months later still?
Yeah I just have a big bucket of soil that I use to repot any of my big plants outdoors that require a lot of medium :) and it just sprouted out of that bucket :) Never seen fluval available in OZ. But seen many from North America use it!
From your experience would you say those plants from bigger corms grow better than those from smaller corms? It is what I think from my experience. All my current alocasia are from corms. I got my silver dragon as a really big corm about half a year ago and it already has about 7 leaves and is increasing in leaf size where as my dragon scale and black velvet came from much much smaller corms and they only got their 2nd leaf a while ago.
Also the fully white one looks amazing. Hope it survives somehow.
For sure, the bigger the corm the bigger the propagation :)
I recently purchased a slightly variegated Odora from a sad plant sale... and they sent me the wrong one with almost no variegation. But there's a little plantlet already growing in the same pot and it is so beautifully marbled🥺 I'm looking to extract it and really hope it survives^^
Good things with Alocasias is that the variegation seems to be super random, so could come back anytime :)
Hello. Does someone know why my alocasia doesn't make any corms. I have her for 3 years, she is quite big makes big leaves, but never have I seen corms when repotting her.?
I watch your videos and clips
On TH-cam and TickTock I love your plants and the 🐈. Do you ever sell plants extra’s
Thank you :) no sorry I don’t sell my plants :)
I always peel the corms because I'm getting mold issues with the outer layer of the corm every time😅 I know that doesn't happen to a lot of people, but for me the only solution seems to be peeling them haha.
That makes a lot of sense !! Good point :)
Does anyone know how much of the steam can go into medium, or, are only root parts ?
Viel glueck :)
@@sydneyplantguy Danke 🙂
I just harvested thirtyfive (35) corms from my alocasia regal shields (with no leaves!)
Yeah the Regal Shields is CRAZYYY!!! 35?! what the....
Can you propagate corns in substrate (dirt)?
Yes :)
I'm wondering if a wholely white stem still connected through roots to a wholely green stem could be kept alive and fed through the roots. We tend of think of plants sending out corms and basal shoots as propagating themselves, but it's all one plant until we rip them up, so I wonder if it will continue to allocate resources to a completely white stem or if the plant would "realise" that it's pointless. 🧐 I will never do this experiment because I have pretty much zero interest in variegated plants - I find them scientifically kind of interesting but aesthetically ugly - but I just imagined someone with what looks like a wholely white plant fed by green parts that are hidden behind a curtain ... in the next room ... fed with a grow light.
My corms are in sphagnum moss that i keep moist, in a clear container with a lid. After about 3 months, still nothing..they are all still firm and look healthy, but there's just nothing happening..what can i do?
Try more light :)
I never use moss for propagation because when I buy a plant from someone it's usually a cutting in moss and I HATE removing moss... It makes me literally angry because it's such a waste of my time 😅
I use perlite, water or fluval and all 3 are so easy going!!!
My favourite is perlite tho because I dont have to rinse anything! I took it of and put in in the pot!
Just straight up perlite? Nothing else?
And then water daily or how do you keep it moist? I imagine they need quite a bit of moisture in the beginning especially?
@@kesseLokomotive keep it moist or have always a bit of water in it like with leca, stratum or Pon. It work the same ☺️ but super cheap
I see your tub of soil off to the side.. do you ever have the problem of your cat using it?? Mine used mine awhile back and I had to throw the whole thing out 😢
Neven had that happen ever :O he prefers the garden bed :D
I use perlite to propegate.
You are so funny 😂
What makes a corm grow? They're already buried aren't they?
Usually separating them from the mother plant gives them a push to sprout, but they can also sprout while still being attached to the mother plant :)
💚💚💚
👍👍👍
😍😍😍
“I like to the live on the edge” lol
😂😂
💜💜
Nice comment :) x
Hehe thanks :)
“The non variegated ones seem to be doing really well” its probably the anemia variegation brings😂 that little white leaf is an energy vampire!
💯💯
I have been avoiding alocasias. I'm a little afraid of them.😅
Flips take away container completly upside down then is shocked it falls out! Roflol
haha I was hoping for the roots to hold it in there :D
I wish I saw this video b4 I repotted my Alocasia. I found a few of those corms & threw them away. 🤦🏿♂️
😻🐈🌿😻🐈
Corms, not forms. (Unless of course I was supposed to sign a waiver by our regal shield to post a comment).
Gently! 😂
😂😂
Heute bist du aber aggro 😝
❤🪴❤🪴❤
You’re apologizing for dirt on your fingers?! If you didn’t get dirty doing what you’re doing? You’re not doing it right! I keep telling the kids that 😂 but with them I also say after that, “make a mess, clean it up!”
DO YOU make pudding though?
I haven't cooked a pudding in a while :D but as a child I would eat pudding almost every day :)
pudding is disgusting anyways, how can you like it as a German?
I've literally been so inspired by your videos turns out I'm not that bad at growing. @ukplant.guy
