This was one of the first things I did with my BRZ and I highly recommend it. I've been driving stick for about 10 years and when I first got my BRZ I could NOT get used to the clutch. Installed this spring and loved it.
hey guys, thanks for the video! i ordered the spring the day the video was published, and it arrived today. before installing this spring, i wasnt sure if the wife would like driving this car even though she's driven manual a ton of times before- and i always apologized for how terrible my driving was when driving with passengers as well. the install was a breeze thanks to you (as much of a breeze as it could be), and those days of driving with the WhatTheHell-pedal are gone! thank you!
I did it and it's great! The clutch on my new BRZ was inconsistent about where it bit, so you had to pay attention all the time. Even then sometimes it would bite sooner and you didn't have enough revs, sometimes later and you had too many revs, makes you look like a ham fisted driver. Now it's consistent and you don't have to think about it, just like it should be.
Just installed it, a couple of tips i give is when your are taking off the spring make sure to keep extreme caution as to where the top piece shoots, mine went shooting up behind the steering wheel column! Also It does make your clutch springy, but it catches smoother
I ordered this from you back in April and installed it before the car had 200km on the odometer. This is how the pedal should feel from the factory. Pro tip, make sure you have extra zip ties, the ones they provided in my case we're brittle and immediately snapped.
Do NOT lose that pin holding the spring assembly, it’s even worse than losing the E-clip. I tapped mine and it flew in the bottomless void under the carpet and behind a bracket. Took 2 hours to find it and fish it out. When it gets caught at the end, PULL IT, DONT TAP IT out.
It's called free play! That space at top of clutch pedal. Only reason for spring is to keep people who ride with foot on clutch from burning clutch out because they drive with it partly engaged all the time.
seriously, I was skeptical about how much difference it would make without the clutch spring but after I took it out, everything was better. There is no vague area when pressing the clutch. All the screw does is remove the slack at the top of the pedal travel. Trust me, take it out and see what it's like. also... once you have removed it, you will know what a goddamn nightmare it is to install it again so you won't even want to do this spring after. I also did this "mod" to my 18 wrx and that also made a world of difference.
@@alexdavidge3167 i only did the spring delete. It's been over a year and half and so far no issues. And clutch engagement is a lot smoother since I can feel the bite point a lot better. The spring made it so that you can't feel any slack so you would always be doing full send just to not stall out the car. Now I can drive like a civilized member of society.
I love your videos, but to get a proper feel for it I feel like you should drive it. Not sure if you did off screen, but I’ve previously removed a spring, and while noticing a physical difference with the weight of the clutch I didn’t really notice a difference til I drove it. May invest in this spring to see how it drives
Off screen I drove it around the shop slowly, not on the street. In the next Tech Tip Tuesday will be on Mtec Shifter springs, and thats when we'll take it out on the road.
Anyone have any advice for how they tap it out at 3:00? I tried to replace mine today, and the teeth of the spring housing assembly does not budge when I try to tap them out like they did in the video at 3:00. I'm stumped, because I'm leaving gashes in the forks, but it doesnt look like it's being pushed out. To be fair, i do not have as long of a flathead as them, but the gashes indicate the head is slipping when I hit it.
@@jackwicker Use a long flat head, like at least a foot long. The one I got was only like 8 inches for just the bolt and it still wasn't long enough to get enough distance from the dash to get good contact for the hammer to hit the end, if that makes sense. If the flat head were longer, it would have gotten me far better contact. Now, I unfortunately can't remember the rest, but I did get it off. I also piled old rags around all the gaps in the rug to keep the pieces from falling behind and it saved me a few times. Also, as someone said below, pull the pin out, dont tap. I tapped it and almost lost the thing forever.
@@SALEENS7GTR5 I figured it out. Hammering with a flat head did not work for me, but simply pressing on the end of the flat head with all the force I could muster with such little leverage did. I didn't lose the pin, but I did lose the E clamp. However, when the spring assembly finally came off, I found the e clamp again. Finally got it all done, but it took me like 2 and a half hours. Not for the faint of heart or the broad of shoulder.
Has anyone got a rattle after 4K rpm’s using this spring? Not sure it’s that or maybe I should grease the spring it is shorter then the stock one so maybe the extra room would cause That, and I know it’s not my throw out bearing I put a whole new clutch kit in that’s all new, just wanted an upgrade on the clutch
HELP. I have a 2003 GMC Sonoma Pickup. And like I've seen in other Reviews my Daughter won't drive the truck because the clutch is too hard to sue. The Clutch was replaced a few years ago. I see this MTEC Clutch Pring but I don't see it listed for a 2003 GMC Sonoma / or the Chevy S-10. Is there an MTEK cluch spirng for my truck? The only alternative I've seen on TH-cam was a post mentioning adjusting the Clutch travel if it is hydraulic. My regular Mechanic said there is nothing he can do. I'm thinking of going to a Transmission Ship and posing the question to them. The clutch comes up hard and fast (lots of pressure to hold it partway up where the point of connection is).
Just installed mine today. Thomas is right...the most difficult part of the install is the very limited amount of space you have and the angles you have to work at. It was a bitch, even with the right tools. Also, be sure to get stronger zip ties and use a magnet to handle the E clip! Overall... Great product! You can definitely feel the difference in the response and firmness of the clutch. I would recommend. I have not tried the clutch without the spring and dont really care to.
@@kinghenry238 - Yes. After over a month of driving with the upgrade I can say I do still like it a lot. It just has an over more firm and springy feel to it. Feels more controllable too. 👍🏼
Lolol no, the nature of 6 puck is to be grabby. Won't change that, will make free play lighter won't affect pressure required to compress that friction plate.
yes, being able to feel your clutch engagement better makes the car easier to drive. i’ve been driving stick for like 5 or 6 years and i’m swapping mine because the engagement point is so weird and ambiguous on my BRZ
Would this be adequate for a 2020 wrx base model..I did the pedal adjustment and I had to undo it because I got nervous lol then I did the spring removal and it's like a old truck clutch..absolute crap..this has been suggested but is it doable with the heavier clutch of a wrx
I think this spring keeps the linkage and throwout bearing from riding on each other, have a look before you eliminate. Plus, it feels better with this spring than without. I checked.
For anyone wondering, it works with a wrx 2015+ or anything that looks like that. Pair this with A braided steel clutch line, brass bushings, short throw shifter plate, shifter stop and sti short throw shifter and you will have nice shifts. Fyi, i have those
I know right, I just finished mine and had to remove the whole clutch assembly from the car however it was very easy once time was out and the assembly went back in the car quickly.

It's called free play! That space at top of clutch pedal. Only reason for spring is to keep people who ride with foot on clutch from burning clutch out because they drive with it partly engaged all the time.
So the free play I’m feeling at the top of the pedal clutch pedal is normal? Even just from tapping it there’s play
That dead space is so that the throwout bearing isn't contacting the pressure plate
I swear my mind is being read by you guys I was just about to take out my spring today and this video comes out, get out of my head!
I currently have no clutch spring and don't mind it at all but there is a dead spot at the top definitely gonna order
Cool, just ordered one, nice quick install after review of this well done tutorial. I've killed this car several times over the years. 14 FRS.
Im going to use this as a guide to replace my OEM spring that broke, Thanks for the video
How do we put the c clip back on??
No lie,the zip ties to compress the spring are essential. Otherwise you'll spend a couple hrs fighting with that pin instead of 1.
I thought about removing the clutch spring as well, but good thing this came out. Might just buy one
