The book is a little more explicit about why Lestat wanted Louis as a way to connect to the modern world. When we humans get older (I am in my 50s now) there's a thing that happens where the world makes less and less sense. Things change for seemingly no reason, and you tend to become frustrated and angry about it. Rice made it clear she was thinking about what would happen if you could live for many lifetimes, until nothing around you made sense anymore and just seemed stupid. In the book many vampires after a few centuries literally just bury themselves in the ground as a way to retreat from the world. Louis' special power was adaptability.

To add to this, the girls power was seduction, even though she was a child. She could bend the will of almost all around her, Lestat included, hence how she was able to attempt to kill him.

In Anne Rice’s novel, “Interview With The Vampire”, Claudia was 5 years old. There was no way a 5-year old actress could have played Claudia, so 12-year old Kirsten Dunst was chosen. Dunst received much praise for her outstanding performance.
Sadly, the character of Claudia was based on Rice’s own daughter, who died of leukemia when she was very young - around Claudia’s age. ☹️

Claudia's exact age. Rice wrote the novel to deal with her grief. Loise is her selfinsert and Lestat her husband, because he seemed so cold to her turing that time (She later regreted how she wrote about him). I also heard some where that Anne Rice also started collecting dolls as another way to deal with that grief.

@@gregkirby9059 in the books it clearly states multiple times that vampires can’t read the minds of the ONE who made them and the makers and unable to read the minds of their fledglings I.e the ones they made.
But vampires who don’t share the same maker or aren’t directly related ( directly related meaning maker and their fledgling) can read each others minds. Louis isn’t good at reading anyones mind. He’s said to be one of the weakest vampires

@@PorterJustPorter I am well aware that the other vampires can read both Claudia and Louis minds. But ‘sibling’ vampires like Louis and Claudia can’t read each others mind nor can they read lestats mind and lestat can’t read theirs either. It’s something about them being “too close”. I don’t know exactly why but that’s how it is.
Basically direct ‘family members’ can’t read each others thoughts. They can only read the thoughts of humans and vampires unrelated.

Claudia's actions were the most justified given what they did to her. In the context of this film at least, she's the most compelling character by a wide margin. And she didn't even manage to kill Lestat, as she was unaware that in his somewhat special case her methods would not get the job done. Additionally, across the series of books, Lestat is really a far more sympathetic character than he appears to be in this film.

    Some information u may like.
    1. In the books, claudia is still younger. When she was turned she was 4 years old. She was so little, she used to climb Loui's elbow and sit there.
    2. When Claudia cutted Lestat and he healed, she was impressed. That's because Lestat didnt teach them anything. They lived with him for decades and they didnt even know how a vampire can die. Lestat is a controler, he was always afraid if people learn, they would leave him alone.
    3. A vampire can heal from any damage. The only way to kill a vampire is to burn with fire or to the sun. They even fear if u let the the ashes together, they would regenarate centuries after. To avoid this, Lestat's creator, burn himself and forced lestat to spread the ashes.
    4. Claudia could not turn Madaleine because Claudia is too little and she dont have enought blood in her body to make the transformation complete.
    5. Loui was able to kill the vampires, because he wakes up before. The stronger the vampire, ealier this vampire wakes. Lestat blood is so potent, that even loui being younger than those vampires, he still wakes before them.

32:55 you got it.. every vampire has some sort of gift that gets tuned up (similar to Twilight), so Claudia can't exactly read minds, iirc, but she gets good or bad "vibes" from people, where as L'estat can read minds.. Louie was given Empathy.. likely due to his misfortune as a human and the suffering he went through losing his family. and apparently Empathy is a very rare gift to have in this world. Great movie! xoxo
oh and btw.. as far as Christian Slater asking to become a Vampire... he DID know what he was asking for b/c he just heard Louie's terrible, horrible, full of suffering with loss of Claudia.. harming so many people.. he felt like a monster. So it was a slap in the face for Louie to hear Christian Slater to ask to become a Vampire and why Louie freaked out saying "not again".. the whole point was to express how horrible immortality was under Vampire conditions.

A fun fact is in one of the books Lestat does try to kill himself. He lays in the middle of the Sahara. Unfortunately, as a newborn vampire he accidentally drank the blood of the Queen of all vampires and a couple ancients. So the Sahara sun came and went and Leatat woke up charred black, slept it off and got a tan. Lestat was also the original owner of the Theater of Vampires in Paris, he gave the place to Armand when he left Paris. Armand was also supposed to be a 16 year old Russian boy, so he originally empathized with Claudia in the books despite their differences. Last tidbit is Armand didn't make Lestat. Lestat was turned by a solitary ancient who kidnapped him for his strength in taking down a wolf pack alone, drained him, made him drink, drained him again, for a full night or back and forth transfers before jumping into a bonfire laughing. So Lestat was left alone going what the hell just happened.

"They don't make vampire stuff anymore." "They do, it's just really corny."
That was more or less the feeling when this film came out. "Dracula" with Bela Lugosi was made in 1931, and pretty much every vampire film since then had been capitalizing on that theme- and most were really corny.
This book, and film adaptation, was a quite new and different approach to Vampires: real people with real lives and real problems (who also happened to be either involuntary or enthusiastic serial killers to survive). It wasn't THE first, really, but it was a break-through, for sure! Since then, we've had Underworld, Twilight, Blade, etc, etc. Vampires got a shot in the arm, as it were, and a new resurgence in popularity following this film. Again- many (not all, but a fair share) of them pale, "corny" imitations trying to capitalize on this film's popularity.
But everything eventually gets old and tired (like centuries-old vampires). I'm sure that, at some point, some clever writer / filmmaker will find a new and different angle to approach the timeless legend of the vampire that speaks to their generation in an interesting way. And then they will be the new benchmark which others will attempt to emulate.....

Hey girlz, virtual hug! 😊 U were curious about who created Lestat. In the book "The Vampire Lestat", Lestat's maker, I think his name was Magnus, was a very old vampire that had gone mad. He was drawn to Lestat. Lestat was the youngest son of a nobleman who was abusive toward Lestat & his mother. Being the youngest son, he wasn't going to inherit anything. When Lestat tells Louis "I am giving u the choice I never had.", he means it. Magnus turned Lestat because he wanted to pass on his "dark gift"& whatever riches he had before killing himself by jumping into a giant fire. He never explained anything to Lestat nor gave him a choice. So, Lestat traveled the world looking for answers. That's why Louis' questions about vampires & his origin upset him so much. During Lestat's travels, he met Armand & his coven of vampires. Armand actually tried to kill Lestat for breaking their rules. He was amazed @ how strong Lestat was for being a young vampire. In this vampire world, the older the vampire is that turns u, the stronger u will be. By the way, in the books, Armand is forever 17. Louis' gift/curse was not reading minds. It was having his humanity intact after being turned. Although Kirsten Dunst was quite young when she played Claudia, the Claudia in the books was 5yrs old when she was turned. Claudia died because Lestat contacted Armand & told him what she tried to do. Armand feeling he owed Lestat executed Claudia, plus they had rules about creating an immortal child. U know, throughout most vampire stories, especially during the mid to late 1800s vampires were seen as sexual & sensual seductors. The vampire is forever looking for that companion to accompany them in the darkness. Anyway, this was a great reaction.😊👍 See u girlz on the next.

Lestat kept himself alive by feeding on the alligators/other animals at the swamp. But this blood would not fully heal him like human blood would, plus the modern world scared him. That's why he looks that way. I don't quite remember if he feeds off Louie during his visit or just if he just starts healing from finally wandering out and feeding on human blood (I mean the way it happens in the book). It's a few more decades between 'the visit' and when Louie has his interview. Lestat had plenty of time to heal. It's hard to remember which way it happens. In the book series, when you feed off another vampire you absorb their memories / knowledge and become more powerful. Feeding off the ancient ones is a big deal, but mostly in other books. A lot of people are confused about Lestat, but it's just so hard to explain all the little details from the books.... There's so much!

This was the first book of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Superb series. Highly recommend reading them. You get the vampire origin story and much more. Unfortunately they did not make a movie sequel with the same cast. The movie Queen of Damned is not bad, just not as good as this one. The AMC series is a new interpretation and so far is pretty good. I would also recommend a companion series on the Mayfair Witches. The first book for that one is The Witching Hour. AMC is doing a series on those books as well. Again, it is so far an excellent series.

If you want a movie about Claudia, there is one that is close to that theme. One of the newest vampire movies is called "Abigail" 2024, it is about a young girl vampire. And it's just her and several humans, and the horrible things she comes up with, to feed... No Brad or Tom to influence her, or as a romantic interest. If you want more of the Claudia romantic story there is the Netflix “Interview With The Vampire”, but she's aged up to about 16, so the romantic stuff isn't quite as creepy.

Lestat is complicated - he's exceptionally powerful because of who created him (not Armand, the vampire committed suicide immediately after. Also why Lestat got angry talking about him) and a relationship/connection he had with the first vampire, Akasha. More or less why its harder to kill him and why he's much more attuned to other people's thoughts.
He also specifically picked Louis because Louis reminded him of his lover, Nicholas. Who also committed suicide not too long after becoming a vampire

That was a time of VERY special movies. It had a lot of competition.
For a tiny window of time, there was Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, Se7en, Saving Private Ryan, Silence of the Lambs, Dances With Wolves, and so many more.
The Anne Rice novels were good, but I didn't think that they translated well to film.

Anne Rice the author came out publicly against the casting of Tom Cruise back before this film was made. Anne Rice thought Tom Cruise wasn't right for the part but Anne Rice finally caved in because of Tom Cruise's superstardom & box office appeal & allowed Tom Cruise to be cast in the film.

    • @Stogie2112
      @Stogie2112 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

With all due respect, that is not true. Anne Rice didn't want Cruise as Lestat, but she didn't have control over the casting.
Rice said, "I think John Malkovich could have done it. Peter Weller I thought could make an interesting Lestat. Alexander Godunov, who was in Witness. They needed an overpowering person like that, very blond, very tall, very athletic, very full. I think Brad Pitt would be a fabulous Lestat. I tried for a long time to tell them that they should just reverse these roles - have Brad Pitt play Lestat and have Tom Cruise play Louis. Of course, they don't listen to me."
After seeing the film, she totally changed her mind about Cruise. She found Cruise's portrayal of Lestat to be excellent. She even called Cruise and told him that she was wrong about him.

@@Stogie2112 That is closer to the truth but not quite correct. Anne Rice wanted Rutger Hauer. And she changed her mind well before the finished product-- Anne was the official screenwriter and she visited the set when they shot outside New Orleans at one point in filming. She had lunch with Tom Cruise dressed as Lestat on set one day and she was charmed by his appearance and she watched him in the dailies for that day. Dailies are the scenes directors view during the making of a film. She changed her mind at that point. Anne felt the finished product was a masterpiece and she took out a large ad in Vanity Fair saying how wrong she was on Cruise.
At the premiere in New Orleans, Anne Rice was actually talking to fans about how great Cruise was and she gave many interviews right before the film opened talking about how good Tom Cruise did in the part. And I agree--he is outstanding as Lestat.
Fun fact--That really is Tom Cruise playing the piano. He took lessons to improve his skills for the part!

@@Stogie2112 You're right. I personally think Tom Cruise was miscast this is not a movie that anybody ever talks about. I think Anne Rice changed her tune because of pressure from the studios & the Tom Cruise loving public. I think Anne Rice caving & calling Tom Cruise was lip service. I read all of her books & Tom Cruise wasn't even on my remote list of actors to play LeStat. The movie to me is ok. LOL !
