    I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a th-cam.com/users/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

    For a easy ingot mold go to the dollar store and buy a small loaf pan. I got one that was about 1.5 inches by 4 inches at a dollar store here in Wisconsin.

    Great video. You can always use an old muffin pan for an ingot mold. I typically process all my wheel weights and scrap lead into ingots in the muffin pan. It makes storing your lead easier.

    Use a kitchen match light and soot the inside of your mold till black the mold will then release lead effortlessly ! Plus lay mold across melting pot to preheat prior to pouring

    Bismuth with a little tin mixed in would probably be pretty good.

  • @mungobaggins8197
    @mungobaggins8197 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tin can make some good jig heads and lures too. It stays shiny, unlike lead, and so you can often get away without painting it. And the lower density can sometimes be a benefit, as your baits/lures sink more slowly even when using the same weight.

    A heavier element refers to the element's atomic structure. Lead (Pb) "Plumbum" is Element 82, it's atomic mass is 207.2 whereas Bismuth (Bi) "Bisemutum" is Element 83, it's atomic mass is 208.9

    Great video !! Very interesting for weight fluctuations with the different "lead free" solutions. BUT !! BE CAREFULL guys ! Bismuth is toxic, and the toxicity of the vapors when you melt it are functionaly similar to mercure... Anyway, bismuth is way less toxic than lead, but you should be well inspired to keep wearring your "respirator" during the whole casting process. Take care guys ! GBY all :)

    Bis muth is lighter than most metals but if you want a sinker material that is also cheap use copper. I collect old household wire from scrap bins and electrical shops and strip the plastic off . Melt the copper (wear a respiratory) down and pour into molds. Makes a great down rigging ball for salmon fishing. Cat wire from communication cables are best , they are nice thin wires that are easier to melt...👍 👍 🇨🇦

    • @FishinNStuff
      @FishinNStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is strange 🤔 yeah it's higher than lead but not that much higher . The thing is at least here leads so available it's cheaper . If you compare new lead or 100% pure lead bought in ingots to bismuth it's a little bit higher . Leads just more readily available I guess

      I have two that I use when I'm melting lead from scrap. I use an old cast iron skillet and a wood fire. I scoop the slag off the top and pour the good lead in the muffin pans, I alternate the pans so I don't get them too hot. I like making sinkers but the lead wheel weights are getting hard to find. I dump a bunch of wheel weights in the pot to melt, anything that doesn't melt goes out with the slag. Funny seeing the steel wheel weights floating on top of the lead.

      You can also use the miniature muffin tins as a sinker mold. I think they are about 4 oz

    Just a few months ago there was a horrible accident at a battery factory in foglesville pa. A new guy was on his first night alone on his job and fell into a large bat of molten lead . Instant death . They only salvage a portion of his body

    Free lead. Just bust up a rinsed out car battery. One pickup truck battery will give you years supply of free lead. Tin, bismuth, solder, cost a fortune, and you're not getting them at the scrap yard cheap.

      Your correct about lead being cheaper at the scrapyard but a as I said 5 times some states can't use lead

    This was a fun and informative video. Bismuth... How does it hold up too abuse? Is it brittle?

    • @FishinNStuff
      @FishinNStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's brittle in like you can break it , we're lead bends . But it's not as brittle as some people make out . It's not glass or anything

    Lead free solder is usually 5 percent lead solder is to expensive to use instead of heating the mold with a torch place mold on top of the lead pot to heat use the soot from a lighted candle to coat mold instead of graphite

    • @FishinNStuff
      @FishinNStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My mold was too small to set it on the lead pot . And the solder I bought came from the scrapyard

    Hey bud.. I wouldnt use the sinker with the nuts in it.. the threads are gona cut your line all up! Also I think the solder one stuck cause its ment to be like glue you know? And that extra weight is what they put in it to make it bond to metal

    • @samuelglovacz4510
      @samuelglovacz4510 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea those would work.. or use small steal washers instead.. then it be like a metal tube

    The lead free Soder try Soderling your mold together that's why you had a problem getting it out?

    Thanks for the video and mentioning safety precautions when melting lead. I used to teach respirator safety and people need to make sure the mask they use is good for metal vapors. A fan pulling air away from the table top you're working on is an excellent recommendation like you said. I'll try using biz-muth for my sinkers and go for making split shots that wild ducks I love to cook up could easily eat.

    I've been saving up the lead free weights from the cast nets I can't repair. They're basically plastic coated barrel sinkers.

    • @charlesc2281
      @charlesc2281 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plus it's metal inside the plastic coating.
