I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos. I am a low budget fisherman who now has cool stuff I MADE, that is still low budget, thanks to you. I love your channel and so does my wallet!!!
Bismuth would certainly be my choice for a lead free weight. Thanks for another awesome and informative video. There hasn’t been a video from Fishin N Stuff that I haven’t enjoyed.
Great video. You can always use an old muffin pan for an ingot mold. I typically process all my wheel weights and scrap lead into ingots in the muffin pan. It makes storing your lead easier.
For a easy ingot mold go to the dollar store and buy a small loaf pan. I got one that was about 1.5 inches by 4 inches at a dollar store here in Wisconsin.
I got an old steel muffin pan at the thrift store for making decoy anchors. For my decoy anchors I only poured to about a 3/4 inch thickness. After pouring my weights I'd pour the leftover melted lead to the top of the muffin pan. They're the perfect size ingots for melting!
When I was a kid we used to use the old tobacco bags for weights 4 weights you fill him up with sand and if they get caught in the rocks you'd be able to break the loose but they've work good for fishing in the Bay
Well Sir, I just spent the last couple hours watching your videos! Thank you for all the awesome ideas and tips! This is probably the most useful channel I’ve found for me!
Tin can make some good jig heads and lures too. It stays shiny, unlike lead, and so you can often get away without painting it. And the lower density can sometimes be a benefit, as your baits/lures sink more slowly even when using the same weight.
Use a kitchen match light and soot the inside of your mold till black the mold will then release lead effortlessly ! Plus lay mold across melting pot to preheat prior to pouring
whenever i go somewhere where lead isnt alowed, i pour some sinkers with bismuth its my go to. the best part about it is when the leftover bismuth cooling (if you do it right) it forms beautiful crystals that you can sell to buy more
You could buy a solid copper ground rod at your Home Depot or Lowe’s and cut it in small pieces and use for sinkers or add them to your molds for weight
Great video !! Very interesting for weight fluctuations with the different "lead free" solutions. BUT !! BE CAREFULL guys ! Bismuth is toxic, and the toxicity of the vapors when you melt it are functionaly similar to mercure... Anyway, bismuth is way less toxic than lead, but you should be well inspired to keep wearring your "respirator" during the whole casting process. Take care guys ! GBY all :)
What kind of a person would vote a Thumbs down on such a fun and informative video. I've got a dollar says he or she votes thumbs down on most "it" watches. I vote five stars, thumbs up.
I am not a DIY guy, but I have started watching your videos. Good stuff. While I will never do this one, I make my own rod holders, and watched your PVC video the other day, gave me a new idea. Thanks. Forgot to comment on that one.
When I seen your channel I said to myself, take a look . But once I heard your voice , I started laughing hard !! So I subscribed and You're awesome as you would say .
been doing some checking up on bismuth in australia first it is almost 7 times more expensive than lead but the thing that got me is that it expands as it cools .aint that strange .
That is strange 🤔 yeah it's higher than lead but not that much higher . The thing is at least here leads so available it's cheaper . If you compare new lead or 100% pure lead bought in ingots to bismuth it's a little bit higher . Leads just more readily available I guess
I have two that I use when I'm melting lead from scrap. I use an old cast iron skillet and a wood fire. I scoop the slag off the top and pour the good lead in the muffin pans, I alternate the pans so I don't get them too hot. I like making sinkers but the lead wheel weights are getting hard to find. I dump a bunch of wheel weights in the pot to melt, anything that doesn't melt goes out with the slag. Funny seeing the steel wheel weights floating on top of the lead.
My grandfather used drill into small river stones and put in a small eye bolt then glue it in place with some kind of really strong glue , that's what he used for sinkers
Man, I'd hate to see this guy next to a toilet! Haha jk 😂 The videos keep getting better and better. Definitely one of my all time favorite youtube channels! I don't know how you keep coming up with all these diy ideas, but keep it up, brutha!
A heavier element refers to the element's atomic structure. Lead (Pb) "Plumbum" is Element 82, it's atomic mass is 207.2 whereas Bismuth (Bi) "Bisemutum" is Element 83, it's atomic mass is 208.9
Good video. I've been trying to melt my bank sinkers into triangle sinkers. Band sinkers don't work very good on the North Carolina coast! Just found my alternative! Thanks
This is a good, informative vid & fun & funny. Bess tek a class en Sothan drawl for this videe-eye-ee-eye-oh! I cracked up the first time I heard him say “Lead Sinkers” slowly & the word “Lead” was two syllables (lay-Ed) like my SC sis-in-law says “Bray-Ed.” Ya know, Bray-Ed...as in... Raw Toast. ;-) The “Ten” sinker doesn’t mean #10. It means Tin. Ha! I do enjoy a good drawl! (& yes, I know he doesn’t Always say “Lay-ed.” More often he says it correctly.)
Lead free solder is usually 5 percent lead solder is to expensive to use instead of heating the mold with a torch place mold on top of the lead pot to heat use the soot from a lighted candle to coat mold instead of graphite
I live in an apartment by the time I bought the vice the work table the lead Sinker molds the gas and the torch the gloves the ladle to pour the lead and a respirator and he'll from the wife the first Sinker cost me about $400 not bad for a day's fishing
Really enjoy your channel ... I've watched nearly all your videos in the last couple weeks .. (Informative and funny) . It's obvious you spend a lot of time and thought into making them.. I'm an old NC fisherman myself outside of Raleigh a bit .. Just sharing a thought here ,, but I was thinking of other things or challenges I might throw your way to give you something else to do or think about when you run outta ideas .. You ever given any thought to see if there's any way to improve or add to the security of our boat trailers outside of, or in addition to the typical trailer tongue locking systems ?? Anyhow, like I said, just a thought ... God's blessings on you and your channel brother ...
Great video! A follow up video about the cost of each material will be great! It would be nice to know which 1 is the most cost effective substitute for lead. Really enjoyed it. God bless!
Of course none of them are as cheap and as easy to find than lead . But honestly I after making the video I noticed that zinc is cheaper than the tin which was the cheapest
Bis muth is lighter than most metals but if you want a sinker material that is also cheap use copper. I collect old household wire from scrap bins and electrical shops and strip the plastic off . Melt the copper (wear a respiratory) down and pour into molds. Makes a great down rigging ball for salmon fishing. Cat wire from communication cables are best , they are nice thin wires that are easier to melt...👍 👍 🇨🇦
I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a th-cam.com/users/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.
that was a great video! fun and informative....can't ask for much more........
Thank you Sir
@@FishinNStuff how did you go about getting these metals? Seems hard to find unless you go online.

An old muffin tin works good for a enget mold.

That's a good idea . I should have thought of that I saw a video Luke Nichols fine on making sinkers with a muffin pan
I’ve used the muffin tins for years and they work great for making ingots. I have one that makes small ingots and one that makes larger ones.
You can also use the miniature muffin tins as a sinker mold. I think they are about 4 oz
My grandfather used drill into small river stones and put in a small eye bolt then glue it in place with some kind of really strong glue , that's what he used for sinkers
I've seen that , I was going to make a video about it . But I haven't got around too it yet

The solder probably stuck to your mold because some types have a flux core or rosin core which helps the solder bond to other surfaces.
Your mostlikely correct lol
A heavier element refers to the element's atomic structure. Lead (Pb) "Plumbum" is Element 82, it's atomic mass is 207.2 whereas Bismuth (Bi) "Bisemutum" is Element 83, it's atomic mass is 208.9
