- TIME TO PULL THE TRANSMISSION. What should have been a very simple process got complicated for very stupid reasons. Excited to get this thing back together though!

I feel your pain. I was working in the shop and got all but one cylinder head bolt out. The socket slipped and I rounded it a little bit. I ended up finding a rag, put it over the bolt and hammered the socket onto the bolt. Worked pretty well.

Hey that harbor freight special is a life saver, it's not the best but for the price it did what I needed without much effort, and I used the impact method too lol
Just a tip to get tough bolts off is if you can get it to turn just a little bit then use some heated vegetable oil while turning the bolt back and forth a bit (even the little bit you can). Eventually the vegetable oil will work its way back and the bolt will come off with little to no force. My grandfather taught me this trick and its worked great over the years and is very cheap.

check the clutch master and clutch slave/throwout bearing, it can cause the same issue and might not have been the clutch. Happened to me once on one of the most notorious clutch jobs on any car (actual 10-15 hour job), when it was just a 70 dollar 10min slave cylinder, a master tech missed the problem too. Would suck to reassemble and it still be broke. You may also want to upgrade the throwout/slave in the Z, its a recommended mod because its a common point of failure and has issues on upgraded/ heavier clutches/pressure plates.

As an HR owner and z fanatic thats tried almost every exhaust on the market, if you want to make this sound as awesome as a vq can (HR's sound much better than earlier models.) Go either random test pipes (HR Specific) or motordyne if you want to cut down rasp a little more, Motordyne XYZ pipe with the resonated mid section and agency power single. Trust (oh and with admin tuning or injen intakes (cold air long ones.) Puts you at about 310 wheel. (ppe longtubes and tune can get you in 330 range but pricy)
sweet jessus it's clean underneath hahaha reminds me of my 2000 Mitsubishi challenger got under it for the first time a few days ago to do an oil change and nothing not a mark or a stain anywhere lol I was like damn that's clean as :D

Had two Z's that was dubbed the demon bolt on the 370s. It's best to get 1/2 extensions long enough with a 6 pt socket and get it from the top, with a long breaker bar.

For the cats you have to use 3x 6in extension and a flex head from the top.
You should get an induction heater. Would take that bolt of in 30sec :)
Rasmus Werner Eliasson yess I just commented that somewhere else look at “mini ductor ll” they’re expensive but work wonders and are awesome when you can’t flames in tight spots like that.. they can get bolt/nuts red hot with electricity!!!
My clutch on my HR Z was the same way. I thought it was completely done, but out easily had 50% left. I replaced it with a competition clutch stage 2 and never had a problem with it again.
Luis Lizardy did my test pipes for me with my transmission in. It ended up taking like 4 hours to just get the cats off.
I had fun doing my test pipes lol we went at them from the top tho and had to take out the steering linkage to get enough room for a swivel socket
Yo Adam, the welds are to keep the ring gear in place for the starter motor. They weld them on so they can be changed out if the teeth get worn down or snap off.
Matt was tightening it with the slide hammer... Get a portable Oxy Acetylene Torch. You can get one at Home Depot. That bolt would have came right off with a little heat.
Welcome to every bolt in a Canadian exhaust system. Oxy-acytelene torch(long live the flame wrench) is what you needed. Propane just does not get hot enough. Also, looks like someone welded the dual mass flywheel instead of using a proper conversion flywheel, as some others have noticed.

I believe the welds are holding the ring gear to the flywheel. Ring gear is outside and the starter engages it to start the engine. And slamming the cat on the floor just smashed tthe 02 sensor Matt said take care of. Lol
By the way don't just throww catalytic converter away. They have valuable material inside that the scrap yards will pay extra for and the foreign cars seem to get more money.

You know what you need for exhaust bolts? A torch. Preferably oxy acetylene. Heat the nut or whatever it threads into until it's red hot and wrench it out fast while it's red hot. It will literally come out like butter. You may need to reheat it a few times.
Easiest way to get a few of those bolts off is from the engine bay with several extensions. Comes right off...

looks like someone turned a dual mass flywheel into a single mass by welding both pieces together.
SumnerKidd that's honestly kinda smart.
You have to access that bolt through the engine bay with 3 12" extensions and a universal joint on the socket.
To take off that bolt you could've just took it off from the top of the engine bay. All you have to do is remove the intake and you can use multiple extensions to get it off.
“THAT ONE BOLT” those moments make you hate everything when there seems to be no answer 😪

If u look at 12:17 u can see the bottom stud has the nut on the front side of the flange so if the one that was stuck is the same way they were loosening it

Recently did test pipes on my q50 has to heat it up that same bolt and didn’t have my transmission out worse thing ever but sounds so good now

Make sure you replace the concentric slave cylinder, it’s a common component that fail in the 07-08 Z’s. Would make your life a lot easier since you already have the trans out.

Only need one tool for that bolt. A set of Mexican smoke wrenches. (oxy-acetylene torch)

get the bolt out from the top with an extension and a nice impact wrench set to over 150 psi
Hey Adam, your flywheel would have been tack welded to make it a 'single mass flywheel' like one that would come out in most cars. Z33's came with a dual mass flywheel setup from factory.
The welds on your flywheel are for attaching the ring gear for the starter.

Liquid Nails, PBR blaster or just some WD-40 would be great on exhaust bolts if ya haven't used that... while you're at it you should put some long tube headers in cuz you'll never want do that with no space to work in. Whenever taking exhaust apart hit evary bolt with some WD-40 at least or they'll just snap off... I prefer PBR blaster.

I drove my car like this for 4 months, no clutch ether. When I started off in first I had less than a second to shift into first and start going and free shift the rest of the gears (the master was leaking, or something). Once I got on the freeway I had to keep on eye on my tack, when I would go up a slight incline or if there was a slight head wind it would start slipping, I had to take my foot off the gas and ease back into it to keep the clutch from slipping again, and it struggled to reach 65mph or even keep it at 65.

Try blow torching a tight bolt (if possible) because the heat will expand the bolt and make it more easier
