The Kuna People: rare insight into one of the world's most private & endangered indigenous cultures

Welcome to paradise. The Sandblass Islands (or Kuna Yala as it's called amongst locals) is a series of 365 islands off the coast of Panama in Central America. The cluster of picture perfect, palm tree dotted islands are a common tourist route for travelling between Central South America. Tour companies journey the waters with small boatloads of travellers year-round from Panama to Columbia, but few give an insight into the notoriously private indigenous Kuna people that inhabit them.
The Kuna people are a small but proud community, the last endangered tribe of the Caribbean. They successfully fiercely fought for their independence from mainland Panama in 1925 and since have managed to preserve their unique language and traditions. They are living in a secluded time capsule, making them one of the world's most hidden and fascinating cultures.
We started talking with Sandblass Frontera - the only totally indigenously owned tour company - about creating a video for their business. But after uncovering the incredibly rich Kuna culture, we realised the story was so much deeper.
We were invited by village elders to live amongst a local community whilst we worked on this video - granted a rare view into this sacred world. We were so moved by the Kuna people's profound love and respect for their precious community. There is an innate dedication to community that drives this culture. That same dedication is a never-ending source of joy and kindness towards each other and the land where they reside.
