Green tomato’s equals my mom’s green tomato chow. To die for! Green tomatoes Onions Brown sugar Vinegar Pickling spice. May add peppers 🫑 celery and a bit of turmeric. Can and lasts well over a year and it’s delicious with/on everything.
Hi, I am from Sweden. We have the same mushrooms here. We call them trattkantatreller. I just wanted to say that you have to tear them in half, because there is often eggs inside the stem. At least here in Sweden :-).
living in south florida, every time you guys show your dog near water i literally hold my breath because there is alligators in pretty much every piece of water down here. then i have to remind myself that you guys are living in a very different world than me so the lil pupper will be okay and i can watch peacefully 🤣❤️
You know you can pickle green tomatoes, they do it in East Europe....for winter. They are great to eat...salt garlic water dry dill ....alternate with carrots as well
Great job to Eric and Ariel for all you do. I love your enthusiasm and knowledge. I'm "older" than you both by a lot of years and enjoy seeing younger ones learning these skills. You make it look easy but I know you are working very hard at not just living a sustainable life but by sharing your experiences with all of us. We all want you to know we are impressed and encouraged by your work. Thank you so much for sharing your life with all of us strangers. Keep up the good work and take care of one another and may God bless you both.
No.... I was thinking “ thank goodness there’s no smell-o-vision” when they cleaned out the chicken coop. LOL chicken poop is probably the most rank of all next to pig. Cow and horse manure is perfume compared to chicken haha
It is nice that you two don't cuss and degrade each other, you don't hit each other. That is so refreshing to watch how sweet you two are with each other. Keep up with your good work.
lol I swore you had said "I'm working on getting the garlic BREAD prepared" had to listen a few times to pick up "garlic BED" -- in the end the garlic in the BED may end up on bread ;)
Bo is so handsome! Thanks for the big smile and giggle. Give him a hug from me.♥️ My thoughts about tomatoes: 1) Use bigger starter plants next year instead of seed. 2) Add a small wood stove in high tunnel for the early season and cold nights. 3) When you add house addition, include a small room for starting plants with access to heat and lots of sunshine. 4) Were your high tunnel tomates on the south side for max sun? If not, move them there next year. Alternatively, add roll-up sides so the tomatoes have more access to fresh air and direct sun during the day. 5) Once the fruit has set, trim back the leaves so the fruit has more access to sun. I am positive you guys know what you are doing. Just some ideas. Thanks again for your awesome videos!
Seems like you could extend the growing season of the tomatoes inside the greenhouse as long as it is sealed up to keep the frost out. I was picking tomatoes on the vine in November one year in Michigan and they were just covered with a sheet of plastic.
You look great Bo, love you too. But mommy Arielle Is just fantastic so is daddy Eric. So much work and good food! I guess that’s were all their energy comes from… love also your chickens and roosters accompanying the music of your work, and I mean of your work, it’s.very special!!! Completely rural as you plant all that garlic…. What a team 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏😘
Gotta yell, "TIMBER!" when you cut those broccoli stalks, Arielle. 😂 We see that Bandit's pond is under construction still... no doubt Bandit's making sure those splash zones are up to code 😉 Oh, and let's not forget that intro! 😂 Bo is a boss pup! 😎
Just started the video so I'm not sure what you do with them but pickled green tomatoes are amazing! We do ours with garlic and jalapenos and it's a great way to use them at the end of the season. • a small handful of fresh dill, chopped • 8 garlic cloves, sliced • 2-4 jalapenos (depending on desired heat) • finely chopped onion • 2 bay leaves • about 20 black peppercorns • 2 pounds green tomatoes • 2 3/4 cups of water . 1 1/4 cup white vinegar • 1/4 cup kosher salt • 1 tablespoon sugar • 2 quart size mason jars, sterilized These are technically "quickles" but we have canned them and they keep great!
This meat looks sooooo good!!! When you put the 🍄 in plastic, my 🇩🇪 rule came out to NEVER put mushroom in plastic. Sorry, I am not criticizing, I just wanted to share my knowledge .
Homemade soy sauce made with mushrooms! Just made 1.3 gallons! Many different recepies on line. I have tried several different ones. You can use all kinds of edible mushrooms. I use spieces, garlic, jalapenos etc. Its stores for a looong time in bottle or jars! 👍 Best regards, Susanne (Norway)
Bandits pond is coming along, you’ll be swimming next year 😂 hard to believe gardening season is nearly over. Enjoy the fruits of your labor all winter long.
why the heck do i end up liking every vid u guys make , i think this channel is one of my top 3 youtube channels that i discovered this year keep it up .
I just assumed that your first frost already came… We had our first frost two weeks ago! I am in northern Saskatchewan Canada your garden is still quite beautiful compared to my greenhouse LOL looking forward to all those awesome winter videos coming up!
I'm guessing their frost was likely around the same time as yours. Ariel said it was early September in the beginning of the film. There must be a week or two delay between filming, editing and posting.
Katherine Miess you’re right! I commented at the very beginning of that video… I Watched the whole vid and then realized my mistake… Fall came early this year! Trees have all turned fall colors. It’s beautiful but my goodness it happen fast!
I always roast my onions, tomatillos, garlic, peppers and tomatoes for salsa. There is just something about it that makes it taste so much better! So yummy!!
Another excellent video. I live in an apartment and y’all have me canning all small batch lol. Cowboy candy, dill pickles, red cabbage and beet slaw, green cabbage and bokchoi slaw, radish pickles, sweet kimchi daikon and zucchini, spicy Napa cabbage kimchi. Soon I will be making small batch summer sausage and other smoked and dried meats. Thanks for the incentive haven’t done this in decades lol.
That Nasturtium just gives me great joy every time I see it. I have meant to mention it many times. I did not know you could make tea out of them! I have three very small versions of yours I grow them for pest control and happiness and we have had two frosts but some of them are still ok. Now I will dry some. I have stuffed them with cream cheese as a special treat, I know you can eat them. Why I never thought to think of other things. But I am always learning new thing from you both so this is great. The jar storage looks great. You will figure out another space to. You have the amazing knack. It is a wonderful feeling to get the garlic bedded down for winter. We are about two weeks away here from putting it in. And I am starving to now lol. Meal fit for a King!
Hi, I've been watching your videos since you moved to Alaska. You can put a large barrel in the ground and you can store cabbage, kohlrabi, carrots and much more there over the winter. This is how I used to store my vegetables over the winter.
You all should definitely try canning some green tomato relish! I am in zone 6 where tomatoes generally thrive, but the caterpillars eating all of our ripe tomatoes this season meant I needed to pick them all when they were green so we at least got something, and I am SO glad, because I used them to make green tomato relish (found the recipe on Allrecipes), and it is our new favorite!
wifemamateacher i just tried a recipe for zucchini relish, but substituted in shredded green tomatoes for the zucchini! It was delicious! I also highly recommend relish! I’ll be making/canning mincemeat tomorrow for my great grandpa too.
For the tomatoes, have you considered building a pulley lift basket system? You can pulley the basket up to the ceiling to get the tomatoes basket out of the way of your living space. When you want to check on the tomatoes, bring the pulley down over the living space.
I am 69 and have been gardening ,raising my own food and milking my goats all my life .BUT i have learned so many new things from your videos.. yours and living traditions and roots and refuge . you are amazing.

Good luck next year.
Today in Wisconsin I also picked tomatoes to ripen inside, and mushroom finds included elm oysters and Grifola Frondosa (hen of the woods). Love this time of year, but there is always so much to do! Thanks for the garlic planting video. I'm going to try planting some in my garden the fall. You are good inspiration. Watching this was a good break, now I'm off to preserve my pepper bounty...
Have you ever dehydrated your vegatables? That would save on the jars and lids, and possibly the storage. Eric is so handy I am surprised that he hasn't thought of adding on a pantry off of the kitchen. I so enjoy your videos. You two are such hard workers! Stay safe!
you have awesome raised beds. I only like large cloves for roasting. Marino is a nice hardneck variety that can be almost as large as Music, at least in my garden (zone 4b). Please be careful with the straw dust in the chickweed barn...”Farmer’s Lung” Helped to kill my farmer uncle.
I seriously love the title of this vid...truth be told that a lot of folks have no clue about where food truly comes from. Food IS life no doubt. Add some basil and mint to your tea mixes, variety is the spice of life, right?! Roast the onions with the tomatillos too! Mushrooms are such an awesome vitamin/mineral addition- plus foraging is FREE food!! You just may love that Music garlic variety, plenty of growers in the midwest have success with it. Lotsa L❤ve from IA!
Hey, just a tip I've heard from hardcore mushroom scavengers. Use a wicker basket to carry the mushrooms you've already collected around with you. As you walk, the jostling of the basket will help distribute and scatter the spores for more mushrooms next season!
Please don't put picked mushrooms in a plastic bag, try and place them in a wicker basket so the spores can spread as you carry them around the forest.
Mushrooms need a gas exchange, depending on the mushrooms I prefer mesh or a basket for harvesting and store in a paper bag in cool temperatures. Love the channel.
That intro though🤣
Sooo cute 🤗

With some of the green tomatoes, before they ripen, try a meal of fried green tomatoes! They're really good that way.
It’s not a Simple Living Alaska video if Bandit doesn’t get his paws muddy 😂
If you put your green tomatoes in a cardboard box with an apple they will be ripe in a week, lover your videos. Cheers.
That's what I have been doing and its been working amazing
Great tip!!! Thank you Andrew!
Or you could use a banana. They emit auxin, which quickly ripens other fruits and vegetables
@andrew r glad to know that I have a lot of green tomatoes also and in PA tonight they said we could get our first frost👍
Bananas work to ripen too if you can get them up there. Will ripen the tomatoes quickly, just make sure you have them in a paper bag.
We all need "Smell-A-Vision" for the Moose Roast
And taste-a-vision!
I ja e jadtongie and meatballs and they were delish !
No.... I was thinking “ thank goodness there’s no smell-o-vision” when they cleaned out the chicken coop. LOL chicken poop is probably the most rank of all next to pig. Cow and horse manure is perfume compared to chicken haha

I did too
Yep, I thought she said "garlic bread" ....silly me!
i always have the closed captioning turned on so i don’t miss anything ☺️
Me too!
Never seen any American couple work that hard! Wish you the nicest crop next year and the followings!
LMFAO barely started the video lol the dog at the beginning lol
Thanks Guys. ...and you two, too , doing all the work and cooking.
Bo is so handsome! Thanks for the big smile and giggle. Give him a hug from me.♥️
My thoughts about tomatoes:
1) Use bigger starter plants next year instead of seed.
2) Add a small wood stove in high tunnel for the early season and cold nights.

PPS Do you guys like goose, duck, grouse? Wondering, since I haven't seen you hunt for or talk about them.

Alaska's # 1 dog is so adorable at the beginning. That meal at the end looked sooo good.
Cheers from Arkansas!!!
This is an excellent video in so many ways (those mushrooms!!!), but Bo totally stole the show. 😂 Good boy!!!
Thank you for NEVER mentioning politics on your channel!
Lucky ya'll. I wish I could get my wife too live like that. Perfect life you got.
Try pickled green tomatoes & fried green tomatoes.
My grandmother used to make piccalilli with green tomatoes.
I have a delicious recipe for green tomato pickles, if you are interested
@Cheri W. I’m very interested ❣️ Thank you 🥰
@@nursecheri62 I'm isterested in that recipe too! *.*

• a small handful of fresh dill, chopped
• 8 garlic cloves, sliced
• 2-4 jalapenos (depending on desired heat)
• finely chopped onion
• 2 bay leaves
• about 20 black peppercorns
• 2 pounds green tomatoes
• 2 3/4 cups of water
. 1 1/4 cup white vinegar
• 1/4 cup kosher salt
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• 2 quart size mason jars, sterilized
These are technically "quickles" but we have canned them and they keep great!
Use a mesh bag when you are picking you mushroom. The mesh bag lets the spoils drop to the ground from the next year harvest.
My wifes grandmother has a small woodstove in her greenhouse to extend the tomato season a bit.
Yes! I had been waiting for an update on Bandit's project :D
You two are so incredibly industrious + productive
I love watching Eric cook! He's pretty impressive - for a guy, lol

The moose roast ? Perfectly cooked. A meal fit for a King !
love your videos and your dog custom make laugh, blessing to all of you.
I love watching bandit play in the water 😊 beau too. your dogs are 👍🏻 great
I always have mixed emotions about the garden in the fall, sad to see it go but happy that it’s gone !
DUDE! It usually takes about a month before I am planning for next year! By the time snow hits the ground, It's all I can think about!
I’m still in the glad it’s gone honeymoon phase, for 2020 😂.
More storage for canned goods? Scrap the red sofa, build a storage box (where it used to sit), and put some nice cushions on top.
Bandits pond is coming along, you’ll be swimming next year 😂 hard to believe gardening season is nearly over. Enjoy the fruits of your labor all winter long.
I nearly died when she pulled up the Nasturtiums! Ripped my heart out. 😅

They say everything's bigger in Texas but I think it's Alaska
Reader's Digest published a tale back in the early 80s which informed that if you take the entire coast line of the State of Alaska... when the tide comes in to high-tide, enough real estate has been covered by water to equal the entire State of Texas. THAT is how BIG Alaska is. Divide Alaska in two and Texas becomes the third largest State. Alaska is 1/5 of the entire lower-48. Big country!
Arguably the best chanel on TH-cam🤙
Burpee's Early Girl tomato is a good variety to grow in shorter seasons.
@soaringtractor They are easy to can, dry and ferment. Drying tomatoes is an overlooked option for long term storage.
Canned green cherry tomatoes are EXCELLENT'
You might consider shorter maturity tomatoes.I don't grow anything with maturity over 60-65 days. These varieties work well up here. Sun Gold Hybrid (57 days), Stupice (52), Early Girl hybrid (57), Bush Early Girl (54), 42 Day Tomato (42), Red Robin (55) and Tumbler Hybrid (45). And in full sun, the Stupice will grow outdoors. Now that's a serious dinner! Beautiful mushrooms wirh the fresh garlic and onions, and the moose looks very lean. My kind of meal.

Pickled green tomatoes = YUM

A pantry would be great, also an area where they could dry most the herbs 🌿. Would love a garden like yours!! Not too sure about Alaska tbough.

Hey, just a tip I've heard from hardcore mushroom scavengers.
Use a wicker basket to carry the mushrooms you've already collected around with you. As you walk, the jostling of the basket will help distribute and scatter the spores for more mushrooms next season!
i love your videos... greetings from the Philippines...God Speed...
Please don't put picked mushrooms in a plastic bag, try and place them in a wicker basket so the spores can spread as you carry them around the forest.
Fabric will work too, just anything that will allow the spores to spread as you go. Then you’ll get more
A mesh bag is what is recommended by leading mycologists.
In most cases once the cap spreads and the ribs show the spore's drop in a day or two.
That's what I was thinking. Good job to them on the mushroom hunt, tho.
Mushrooms need a gas exchange, depending on the mushrooms I prefer mesh or a basket for harvesting and store in a paper bag in cool temperatures. Love the channel.
