When you are escaping helheim in the flying ship, you actually do get pretty close to the giant bird.
When I saw the bird for the first time it was a major oh shit moment like: “I’m going to have to fight that thing aren’t I?”
But nope, sadly.
@@FreeAimKid Apparently they did want us to fight the bird but due to money or something they couldnt do it. Real shame too cause that fight wouldve been awesome.
@@JCotto739 I imagine the fight was supposed to start with the bird intercepting the ship, the player fights it on the ship for a bit, then Kratos pulls a ratatouille and flys it into the realm room.
Though in a way I do prefer the bird just sitting there hauntingly way in the background.

Instead of asking what was in the head that gets chopped off at the tree I should’ve asked to see if the chaos blades were still underneath in the house at all times
I think it's probably rendered whenever Kratos is near the house like a normal object. If I remember correctly when he gets Atreus from under the floor after the stranger fight you can get a really small glimpse of the red skirt that Kratos used to wear, which contains the blades.

They totally are!! During the part of the game where you step into the light of alfheim there’s a part where your in the house and you see Atreus standing over his mothers wrapped body. If you turn on photo mode you can clip through the ground just enough to see that yes the blades wrapped in the leather sheet are there under the house at all times. I thought it was wicked cool to find once I knew they were there (after my first play through obviously)
they are! when kratos comes back for atreus after fighting baldur for the first time, you can see the red cloth sticking out. the camera even focuses on that area for a quick second when kratos closes the hatch before they leave their home.
If he had less hair and was more confident, it'd be balder bolder Baldur under the boulder.

I remember reading about the big crow at 7:50 and that it was originally planned in a boss fight but it never happened due to time constraints. I imagine that's why there's alot of hidden detail in the model even while it's sat so far away from the player.
It's a shame we had to fight the same troll 7 times... if we focused less on making things look realistic I think we could make much more impressive games. It would've changed God of War from a 10/10 to a 12/10
@@nottoday9182 Making it look less realistic is not the reason things were scrapped. Ps4 is just ancient hardware. GoW is new. Less chance to experiment.

Yes the big bird was in fact meant to be a boss battle that was pulled for the next game (edit: Cory Barlog said this, it was obviously changed for Ragnarok)

I imagine a lot of the extra detail and lack of culling has to do with the "one continuous shot" system?
Its fairly common for games to have a lot more detail than necessary, and to not cull some big things. Its typically a mixture of changes in plans and there being no real need to go back and remove/cull stuff if the game isn't hurting for resources.
I've never actually played this game, but there's a ton of detail and a lot of really clever tricks that show me that the devs had a ton of fun making it!
You should totally play it, I have never seen such a perfect balance of storytelling and gameplay.
I'd recommend it.

The tattoo on Thor is for sure a reference to the "blood eagle", a form of execution where the lungs are basically cut out from the back and left hanging to resemble wings en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_eagle

You really should, it’s one of the greatest games I’ve ever had the privilege to play. Doesn’t matter if you never played any of the others, it will still be fantastic. Some pieces of the story won’t hit you as hard, but nevertheless great game
Its because its gorgeous that it has stuff like billboarding. The prettier you make the game look, the more resource-saving tricks you need.
The marking on thors neck and back are symbols of power or runes. In norse mythology the more tattoos some one has the more powerful they are like with balder a very powerful character covered in tattoos

If you've ever seen one of those optical illusions where someone paints an image on the floor which, when viewed at the right angle, makes it looks like there is a hole in the floor, that is basically how parallax occlusion mapping works. The difference is that in POM, the image is redrawn every frame to match the view angle of the camera.

@Eric Occcams5 It does reveal new things sometimes. It depends of how many idea changes the developers had and whenever they left the pieces lying around or not. Some games have a lot of stuff out of bounds, I recall Shadow of the Colossus has a lot of structures outside the map that are never seen during normal gameplay.
That being said, if the developers choose to not show the players, its not canon/relevant to the lore of the finished game. Finding such things is mostly for nerdy curiosity's sake =)

I think thor's tattoo is the asgardian symbol and those two flashes of blue light were probably the flashes from his hammer in the secret scene but someone messed up so they accidentally play in the cutscence before the secret ending scene as well.

Photo mode was the only way for me to see in other areas that are normally not visible from the camera. I'm glad we can see everything now!!! SMS really did a great job with building the world and how detailed it is!

6:05 Cool skybox... This is one of the things I love about using noclip.
I believe the two boats in the main menu are because those are just the normal docks placed there. The docks always have a boat, unless Kratos is in a boat himself. You can see that when you dock somewhere close to another dockable place in the game, you will see another boat also docked at the other place oncve you dock. I assume that's so you can always depart from anywhere even if you fast travel there or want to depart from a different dock than where you started.
8:05 when you’re on the floating ship you get a really good closeup of the bird and it moves and everything
The 2 blue flashes is probably effects of the lightning that was put in to early
7:55 But there is a close-up shot of the bird in-game. When the ship is flying around the bird, at one point it leans toward the player to take a closer look, the white glow of its pupils becoming visible too. It may even open its beak revealing the tongue if I remember correctly. A follow-up video needs to include this scene from the camera's perspective.

Nah, he's kind of a mash-up of other existing models. He has Kratos' exavt beard and Magni's build. I think the final model will be a bit different and also not bald, since in the myth Thor has a head full of fair hair.
Seeing this stuff is so funny because even after all this time and even though modern video games look like movies, they're still essentially ocarina of time on the n64
The two flashes might be related to Thor showing up at the end.

I just realized that it looks like Thor is just Kratos but with a normal skin tone, you can especially see that the beard is the exact same, they probably did this to save on time since you never actually see him
Edit: the only difference I can notice is all differences of just facial animation, the constant snarl that Kratos usually has isn’t there, as you can tell by his nose not being wrinkled up and the lack of those lines just above Kratos’ mustache
We want to see who blew the horn when Atreus was sick, where the storm originated from, what’s going on with the serpent at the time... I don’t care about dead-dragon eye sockets lol

I suspect what appears to be a weird layered eye socket on that seagull model is actually it's eyelids. It's a very detailed model so perhaps it was designed to be able to blink during a scrapped cutscene or something at some point.
Going in to this episode, I was like "They better show us Thor!"...

The GOW start screen makes the PS4 Pro fan kick into high gear. I always wondered why. Thanks to this vid showing the insane amount of info loaded, for something that IMO should be a light load on the system, now I know.
For the bird... We were supposed to fight her as the first boss, but the idea was rejected, and while we're in the ship with hwo we came out of hellheim, we can see the bird from pretty close.

It has a lot of detail in the title screen because the game is fluid and has no camera cuts. So when you start the game the starting area is already loaded instead of going through a loading screen to get there. They do this a lot to achieve a fluid camera.

The reason why that huge bird, Hræsvelgr, is very detailed is because SMS was planning him to be a boss battle (I'm assuming during that part where you leave Helheim as the boat goes around him). He'll definitely be a boss in Ragnarok that's for sure.

Turns out I figured it out those 2 blue flashes are from the thor secret theme because when the lightning hits twice it flashes blue near the player so that's what that's for
