I feel really ashamed. Never before heard of this group. Just recently discovered them by Annette and new Edgar Wright documentary. I just started to listening them and especially this song. Like a drug. They are so ahead of the time. That's probably reason so many people didn't heard about them - they are just too much ahead of us. Thank you Carax and Wright, you just made life better. And I definitely wouldn't be alone.

Actually, they started out in 1971, releasing their first album under the band name of Halfnelson.... but then it was re-released in July '72 after changing their name to Sparks. I still own their original (Rundgren-produced) debut from '71 and play it every now and then. GREAT album! And guess what? Still pretty timeless!

If anyone else was wondering about the drummer/love interest, she's Christi Haydon, and she worked with Sparks in the early '90s. Sparks wrote and produced the single Katharine Hepburn for her, which she sang during concerts and for some TV appearances. She worked largely behind the camera after this, and returned for "The Sparks Brothers" movie.

  • @sunsetloner

This is a really deep and emotionally profound song. They hadn’t put out an album in six years when this came out. They had reached a point where they just weren’t marketable in any way. They were pretty certain it might be the end of them as a musical duo. They had been developing a film for Tim Burton that fell through, which apparently took a toll on them. All of a sudden, they recorded this album and realize that it had a huge audience and market in Europe. And it’s ironic because a lot of people who weren’t aware of their legacy, had pretty much accuse them of ripping off groups like erasure and pet shop boys, not realizing that they were the ones that influenced them.

    • @kyachdistent1301
      @kyachdistent1301 ปีที่แล้ว

Pet Shop Boys can go screw. Please, they and Erasure weren't even AROUND when Sparks joined the electro-synth vibe in 1983. And as for the duo thing, this lot got it from Sparks, only Tennant can't do anything with his one-note voice, nor can he jump about without rupturing something. They've no stage presence which is why they have to rely on costumes, gimmicks and circus performers. And apart from the odd clever worded song, most of their body of work is average and has been for a long while. Even back in the day, 'Heart' is an overrated basic piece of weak cheese, worded by someone without an identity which says it all when you consider the shithead they did the song for who, then threw it back in their faces anyway as the bint didn't want to do it! Ha, serves 'em right!

@@kyachdistent1301 If you read my comment in detail, you will see that I am establishing the influenced groups like Pet Shop Boys and Erasure, yet by the time they released this song, Many people tuning in we’re not very aware that they spearheaded that sound and style. Thanks for this great song. I've never experienced anything like this.
The song has been played on German radio for about 2 years. I could swear I had never heard it before.
I first thought it was a brilliantly done Retro Song that perfectly conveyed the atmosphere of the 80s or 90s.
After hearing it countless times on the radio, I researched it and discovered yesterday that the song actually dates from that time. This is completely crazy and unbelievable because I would never have thought of it. And apparently I didn't notice anything about it in 1994.
This is absolutely mysterious, but also completely wonderful. I have never experienced something like that!
Thank you for awakening this wonderful feeling of the 90s in me.
I'm literally moved to tears. Cause it's so beautiful. 🥲🥲
What a great song. And apparently timelessly beautiful. ❤🙏🙏
    What a great, artistic video.
What a beautiful, sweet, nice lady btw who really looks exactly like she's from the 1940s. Fantastic. She is so beautiful.
🥰You now have a new fan. Absolutely.

Couldn't remember any word of the lyrics but "my way".. By the arrival of internet I tried so many times to find it but each time I search for my way, it's Frank Sinatra's that comes out.. I'm so glad to find the tube of my youth tonight.. ^_^

Ron has called it "to combine emotional lyrics to a jolly melody".
In this particular song the melody isn't the jolliest I've heard 😅, there are others! 'Under The Table With Her', two kids playing under the dining table, the guests believing, or pretending to, they are dogs, and suddenly a line about that people in some countries only have tea and rice to eat. Not expected.
On the other hand, an emotional melody with emotional lyrics, but in the lyrics, from nowhere, are a line or just few words, usually a thought the storyteller has, that gives you an unexpected laugh.
'Good Morning' is a great example, a story about a guy, who obviously wants to find true love, but somehow doesn't seem to attract women easily. After a night on the town with maybe a drink too much, he wakes up with a beautiful woman bedside him.
He realizes that it's just a one night stand, but he wishes it to be a more. He is grateful for the moment anyway, but also thinking about who she is, probably not just any beautiful woman, more likely a 'scandal beauty'.
While he is making breakfast he thinks: "I hope it's just your laugh that is infectious".
The sentence isn't funny per se, but in that situation, a state between sadness (he really cares for the woman) and the gratitude for this short night, that very down to earth thought, expressed in that indirect way, gives a laughter almost stuck in your throat. Typically Ron's lyrics.
And, of course the dear little Brenda, always in the way, "caused her twins delay"😂

Love this... This song gets stuck in my head for weeks at a time, disrupting my own writing sometimes. "Sign your name with an X, Mow the lawn" seems to relate to the excitement of signing a record deal then going about your mundane life. Every lyric line is brilliant. The Sparks Brothers movie was well done and made them even more relatable. Such funny and likeable guys. I'd love to remix one of their songs.

      It is "mow the lawn".
That's what it was on Sparks website before they changed it (albums listed with lyrics).
In the booklet with the triple CD, the anniversary release, of 'Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins'.
In "IN THE WORDS OF SPARKS... SELECTED LYRICS".
      Mow the lawn, it is.
I guess it means 'go back to hard labor', about the songwriter, 😂
