Man the beauty about bike packing is you will never be prepared. The upside side is it will always force you to learn something new about yourself, your equipment, or just cycling in general. Good job out there!💪🏾
I just love your personality! I found your channel like millions years ago when you use to bleach and dye your hair 😂. Its amazing to see how you've evolved and change. Also, I definitely don't mind when things don't go as planned and you have to change gears (so to speak), its life. More Jenna adventures please 😊
Since the bike is new and assuming if you had not crashed the bike on the drive side, which might cause the derailleur hanger to bend, it's very likely the new cable has stretched, causing the rear derailleur indexing to be off. On a bike with mechanical shifter like yours, there's typically a barrel adjuster (located either at the shifter or the rear derailleur) that allows you to make adjustment to index the rear derailleur. Turning the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise will reduce the slack since your new cable has stretched. Do quarter of a turn, check, and repeat if necessary.
I'm a bit late to the party but I wanted to say the same. If you're still unsure about how the derailleur works and can be fixed, there's a really good video by "Berm Peak Express" about it. It's called "How to tune your derailleur with basic tools (for beginners)". If I recall correctly, he also states that the cable might stretch during the first couple of kilometers.
Barrel adjusters, upper and lower limit screws, jockey wheel alignment, and the all important "B" limit screw. Once these mysteries are understood, derailleurs really aren't all that tricky.
I find your videos so comforting and inspiring. As someone who wants to take trips like these, thank you for demystifying and making it seem possible. Things going wrong is part of life ALWAYS!! I had a really bad day, nothing worked out the way I wanted and planned, and hearing you say that this is how life is sometimes was really comforting❤️ Thank you
A new bike usually does this with gears, you need few miles and adjustments to fix the issue, a rule before a long ride or tour is to run few miles with new bikes and gears.
Yeah seriously. Mark Beamount (world record rider) chose to ride a brand new bike across the whole world and he had wheel issues not long after he started - spokes kept breaking (spokes didn't fit the whee size), also had 3 flats in one day.
I ride bikes for 25 years and still do not know how to fix derailleur. What I learnt is that you put your bike a side that doesn't have it. As most of the time you damage it just by putting it down and banding derailleur. Good video.
Great video. My favorite time of the year to ride and camp. I just bought a Priority 600adx mountain bike that is a pinion bike. No chain or derailer to deal with and all belt driven. I never have to worry about mud or grime mucking up my shifting since all my gears are in a sealed gearbox. Expensive bike but I think it will be worth it. I just got sick of problems all the time so it was time to invest in something designed for bikepacking. I hope you get things sorted out with your new bike. One word of advice is to be sure never to lay your bike over on the derailer side. Sometimes things can get a bit out of alignment and even a slight bend of the derailer can cause major issues. Again, this is why I went hassle free myself. Never need to oil or grease anything for at least 6000 miles or so and then its just changing the gear box oil. The Gates belt is supposed to last 3 times longer than a chain but I carry a spare just in case. The best part is that it's so quiet and no more clanking gear shifts which makes a ride like yours even more special when you can hear things much better. Glad you made it ok and keep riding!
Thanks for another great video. You always find the best places and capture them well. You may be asking, "How can a new bike fail to shift properly?" It might be because the cable and housing are not working correctly. The ends of the housing might not be properly seated in the stops or barrel adjuster, thereby causing friction on the cable. Often the end of the housing is not filed straight when it is cut and the end that goes into the derailleur or shifter is not clean and square, causing friction on the inner cable. The barrel adjuster at the shifter may need adjustment. The compressionless housing may not be properly seated or compressed (tug on the bare inner cable to seat it). The housing may be slightly kinked as it enters the barrel adjuster on the derailleur. It should enter straight into the adjuster for at least 1-2cm near the adjuster. Shape the cable housing if it is not. The presence of the bags near the cables in front of the bar may be distorting the cable housing so that it cannot allow the inner cable to slide properly. All of these things you'll be able to sort out at home with just a few tools.
Thankyou for this- very in depth and insightful! I’m definitely going to screenshot your comment and take a look at my bike and try and identify all the parts you mentioned here! I appreciate you!
@@jennalexisko Looking at the derailleur (7:10) the cable is entering at a slight angle, but it is not so bad. If you can cut the zip ties on the chain stay pull out a bit more housing and coil the housing in your hand at the curve, it will probably allow the housing to enter completely straight into the derailleur stop. At this point, you can also check that the housing is cut squarely by shifting into the largest cog, and then clicking the shifter many times to release the inner cable (as if you were changing into a harder gear), but without pedaling. This will create slack in the inner cable so that you can pull the outer housing away and check the end of it for squareness. There are all kinds of tutorials on-line on how to adjust the limit screws, but I don't think that is the problem here. Another possibility is that the derailleur cage got bent and the upper and lower jockey wheels are not in the same plane. More common is a bent derailleur hanger, which should ideally be straightened with a special tool, or by removing the derailleur and using an adjustable wrench to bend it. A bent hanger is one of the first things you should check for.

Derailleurs typically do this on new bikes, it’s to do with brand new cables wearing in and stretching. The easiest way to fix it is, find out which way the gears are skipping, normally the cable stretches so you will turn the derailleurs adjustment anti-clockwise just slightly, remember to do half a turn and test by riding and changing gears. The derailleur will move in which ever way you turn the adjuster, so turn it to the left for going to bigger sprockets and to the right for smaller sprockets. You’ll be mastering the derailleur before you know it. Best of luck out there.
Thanks for taking us along, Jenna! So beautiful! I have come to kind of hate my derailleur (:)) to the point that I am considering taking an REI class specific to dereailleur repair and maintenance (offered in MN, USA).

If you bang the derailleur against something ever so slightly, you may bend the derailleur hanger, which is a meant to save your frame against damage. By bending it, it will throw off your shifting. Normally the hanger piece is replaced, or you can buy a tool that will help you straighten it out again, or take it back to the bike shop so they can do it

As Jorg schlagheck says: it is not the destination but rather the adventure that matters. Jorg has cycled in Europe, Central America, South America and across Canada but his home is Edmonton. My thoughts are that your cable slipped or stretched or both! My suggestion is to learn how to tune your rear cassette cable alignment (Derailleur). there are often 2 adjustment screws. one at each end of the cable run. One where the cable accesses the Derailleur and one at the shifter. Shift gears into the middle gear(s) best on a 5, 7, 9, 11 cog cassette, the evens are the same but you may need to test the adjustment on both center cogs so if you have a ten cog cassette they are 5 and. Once 5 or 6 in line with the chain in the same marked gear on the Derailleur, that is it! Watch some videos and perfect fixing gears, fix your parents gears, your friends gears soon you will be the gear wizard! Take care and learn how to adjust and maintain every part of your ride! Take care, Misha LeBlanc Moncton, NB; A few Kilometers east!
Canada has no shortage of water and beautiful natural scenery. With so much wilderness, no wonder mountain biking is so popular. With all those large pebbles, a gravel bike probably won't cut it and suspensions become a necessity, and a full suspension is called for for longer distances, and definitely for faster rides. I hope the derailleur problem will be the last of your problems, but it is interesting to hear about the problems you encounter as you ride. Soon you'll be able to fix all bike problems, and be ready for more adventures. I can't wait.
Love your videos! Thanks for sharing, always makes me want to get on my bike and go for a ride! I've never done an overnight trip yet, but you're really making me think I need to try :)

Wish I could reach through the screen for that derailleur adjustment, easy peezy..There are alot of great tutorials on front and rear derailleur adjustments, once you see it, it truly is very easy.
The shop where you bought a bike. They probably didnt put much effort into adjusting derraileur. On the derraileur, there are two screws..one is for high gears and one is for low gears. When you align derraileur with cassette. Than you go onto fine tune it with barrel on the shifter on your handlebars. But it seems that you dont have multi tool, so only option is barrel adjustment that you could have done in this situation.
This is a great tip Thankyou so much! I did actually have my multi tool with me- just didn’t know what to do with it 😂I did end up getting my cables adjusted at the shop after I got home but I’m definitely saving your advice for next time because they took it to the back and I didn’t get to see the process lol
@@jennalexisko You said that the bike shop did a tune up on the bike when you purchased it. I hate to say, it doesn't seem like they were very thorough. Mihael was correct about the limit screws. However, the limit screws are NOT what was causing your bike to have poor shifts or to jump gears without pressing the gear shift levers. The limit screws "limit" how far your derailleur goes in either direction. If not set properly, you can have any of these issues: 1) Your chain can jump off of the largest cog into your frame 2) (What happened to you it looks like) Your chain can jump off the smallest cog 3) The derailleur can skip entire cogs when shifting, So it seems like your limits were improperly set. BUT the problem with your shifting was caused by improper cable tension. This can be adjusted with the barrel adjuster, either found on your handlebars where the shift levers are, or on the derailleur itself. If your bike is having trouble shifting into higher gears (smaller cogs), you want to turn the barrel adjuster clockwise in one click increments until it shifts smoothly. If your bike is not shifting properly into lower larger cogs, turn the barrel adjuster counter clockwise. I hope this helps you Jenna. I recently discovered your content and I enjoy experiencing the adventures through your camera's eye. I hope to one day go on some badass bikepacking trips as well.
@@BykerSoosh Nah, pretty standard with a new bike and cable stretching/wearing in. Maybe a faus paux by the bike shop to not give the new owner a heads up that this will occur after first major ride/useage.
You probably bent the derailleur hanger somehow. You can in future try the barrel adjustment on the cable at the derailleur and the gear shifter. Always lay the bike with the derailleur upwards so you don't accidentally put the bikes weight on the derailleur. The hanger is designed to bend when too much stress is put on it to stop worse damage to the derailleur.
Looks like cable strech which can be common on a new bike. This is a simple fix and you can totally teach yourself by using your barrel adjuster most commonly on or near the shifter or sometimes on the derailer. By now you e had this adjusted but hopefully you learned how to do it for next time. Its Empowering to be able to fix, adjust, repair your own whip.
Things never go wrong, they just go. Being ok with whatever comes is a lot more peaceful. edit - since it was working you may have bent the derailleur hanger

way to go for that positive outlook, if you get a new bike in the near future, get an mtb with a pinion drive or internal hub and forget about bike drivetrain issues. much less headache and more focus into other stuff. but then again these happenings make the experience more interesting.
I Suggest you find a better place for your bear spray. If you fall you could burst the can. I like to keep mine attach with a carabiner on the shoulder strap of my backpack or camelback. Great video.
People have said it here already, but I think the issue with the bike is with the gear alignment. The gear cable tension is basically in-between gears, so it's jumping between them. A quick TH-cam video on 'derailleur alignment' will help you on your future biking adventures.
@@TheLeesto haha it’s 50/50 honestly! If I’m tired enough from hiking/biking all day sometimes I’ll sleep like a brick- otherwise days I’m just too cold or umcomfy (or hearing strange noises outside my tent) and I’m barely sleeping 😂
De rallier prob happened because new gear cable stretched a bit. TH-cam on adjustment process it's really simple. Great outing I'll be following you from now on from Western Australia
Bummer about the chain skip. Many things can cause it. Usually it's just a quarter turn of the barrel adjuster to at least reduce the noise. The most recent time this happened to me, i was messing with the barrel adjuster to no avail and it was due to the B screw stripping out. I have another bike that skips but only on one gear so that's due to a worn cog (not likely to be your root cause since your bike is new).
*it is literally a 10 second super easy fix, if you done it once you know how it works :)* your shifter in the back is either too far left or too far right.. thats why it is clicking fo fix, you turn the dial where the shifting cable goes into your handlebar shifter if you dont know which direction you can turn like 3 klicks to one side and see if it gets better, if not try the other direction (just always remember how much you turned which direction, makes it easier to get back to the original setting) once it is aligned correctly you probably dont have to touch it for the next 5000km+
That looked like a lot of fun. I've yet to go bikepacking now that I bought a gravel bike but I got a mountain bike too. I'm hoping to get some done in late fall.
Enjoyable video. I suppose it was your derailleur hanger that got bent, so the shifting was misaligned. A spare derailleur hanger in your tool kit might be the solution? I also wonder why so few bikers use a kick-stand, I find them invaluable and well worth the extra bit of weight. Happy trails...

Take care,

this was relaxing to watch! lovely sights! hope next trip will go better in terms of bike performance... thanks for sharing💚
I can't wait.
welcome back jenna, beautiful scenery...cant wait 4 the next video.
Always a good day when Jenna releases a new video~~
❤❤❤
So much very well Cinematic and background music suits everything so well. I love every single second of this video.
Goodluck for new bike.😅
This was so beautiful!! Can't wait to see more mtb adventures in the future!
Omg, you live there as well? What a beautiful, beautiful landscape. Thank you for taking us with you! Greetings from germany! ❤
Wow hello all the way from Canada!
Hi!! Omg I used to watch you when you were in highschool! I miss those videos!! ❤❤
No way girl 🥹♥️ we’ve come a long way
Love your videos! Thanks for sharing, always makes me want to get on my bike and go for a ride! I've never done an overnight trip yet, but you're really making me think I need to try :)
Great vlog! Don't worry about us lol we just enjoy watching your adventures. I feel inspired to do bike packing trips because of videos like yours. Also, I don't know if you updated the music that you put in the videos but it sounds great! Ok, bye.
love your vlogs so so much.
Thankyou🥹♥️
Canada looks so nice! Greetings from Switzerland :)
Wow hello! I hope to visit your beautiful country one day😌♥️ greetings from Calgary
You're so beautiful inside and out! Also I was sad Herb didn't make it this trip 😂
Herb was chilling at home 😂
Nice work, things tend to work out :) incredible scenery, was this in Montana?
@@tompelham7035 thankyou! Actually it’s Alberta, Canada!
Your videos are so amazing! What camera are you using?
This place looks lovely. Wish i could get there easily. Love being out on my bike.
footage of your return trip was beautiful, especially after the bridge
I did many Bikepacking trips in California Utah Colorado New Mexico and Arizona, but not yet in Canada where I am from, looking forward to Bikepack some west cost trails soon
The fun is to enjoy the full package! Flaws included! ;)
I think it was Cormac McCarthy who wrote “You never know what worse luck your bad luck saved you from.”
Wish I could reach through the screen for that derailleur adjustment, easy peezy..There are alot of great tutorials on front and rear derailleur adjustments, once you see it, it truly is very easy.
Me too! I'm just like fiddle with it a bit more don't walk your bike🤣
What a beautiful scenery at the beginning of the video . Stay safe
If not set properly, you can have any of these issues:
1) Your chain can jump off of the largest cog into your frame
2) (What happened to you it looks like) Your chain can jump off the smallest cog
3) The derailleur can skip entire cogs when shifting,
So it seems like your limits were improperly set.
They might well have put effort into it, cables do stretch the first time you use them
@@Joe-fq6ez But for her to experience the chain jumping off the cassette AND poor shifting? That sounded horribly out of spec.
@@BykerSoosh Nah, pretty standard with a new bike and cable stretching/wearing in. Maybe a faus paux by the bike shop to not give the new owner a heads up that this will occur after first major ride/useage.
As long as you enjoyed the adventure. Thats all that mattersi still remember my 1st bikepacking trip.
You probably bent the derailleur hanger somehow. You can in future try the barrel adjustment on the cable at the derailleur and the gear shifter.
Always lay the bike with the derailleur upwards so you don't accidentally put the bikes weight on the derailleur.
The hanger is designed to bend when too much stress is put on it to stop worse damage to the derailleur.
cool adventure! thanks for sharing
Excited for the next video! Keep it up and ingat!
Sounds like the cable adjuster needs a turn or two in either direction.. Nice video young lady. Beautiful country side .
It's not an adventure unless something goes for a shit! Glad to have found your channel, just Subbed. Thanks for sharing your Dash!!! - Davey.
Thanks Davey! I couldn’t agree more 😁
What rack did you use for your front panniers? (for your specialized) I noticed from another one of your videos, and I am trying to find a nice one.
so what was wrong with the bike? loved the video. Cant wait for fall and maybe see another video with all the yellow and orange leaves!!
Things never go wrong, they just go. Being ok with whatever comes is a lot more peaceful. edit - since it was working you may have bent the derailleur hanger
I've been a loyal follower for about 7 years now, and I am dying to know how u got into all of this? It looks terrifying and exhilarating
@@harleighs6186 7 years 🤯 time flies huh!
And honestly, when I started I just had get out there and push my self and hope for the best lol! I kinda started with backpacking and then with that same gear learned how to pack for bikepacking and just went for it ! Bare minimum I’d say just make sure you have your safety and repair kit on you at all times (like first aid, extra chain, lube, multi tool, spare tubes if you use them, tire levers, gps device, etc) and theN Just start planning routes you think you’d be comfortable riding! I wish I could give you expert advice but I’m clearly still learning things every time I go out haha! It can definitely both terrifying and exhilarating 😅
@@jennalexisko it's very cool all that you've grown 🥰💕 can't wait to see more adventures
way to go for that positive outlook, if you get a new bike in the near future, get an mtb with a pinion drive or internal hub and forget about bike drivetrain issues. much less headache and more focus into other stuff. but then again these happenings make the experience more interesting.
Heyyy really nice trip!!!
I'm looking for cycling glasses. Can you share which ones you're using?
Eeeeek we love a new vlog
I love your vlog ❤❤❤
Woahhh beautiful sceneries!
I Suggest you find a better place for your bear spray. If you fall you could burst the can. I like to keep mine attach with a carabiner on the shoulder strap of my backpack or camelback. Great video.
There is an adjustment on your handlebar where your gear shifter is. The cable at the end has a screw adjustment
Great tip, Thankyou!
People have said it here already, but I think the issue with the bike is with the gear alignment. The gear cable tension is basically in-between gears, so it's jumping between them. A quick TH-cam video on 'derailleur alignment' will help you on your future biking adventures.
Do you really like pedaling in Crocs? I would never think to try those!
Where do you find camp grounds like these?
Because its a new bike, cable will stretch after the first few rides, and your derailleur will need to be slightly readjusted so it won't click.
Cable probably stretch and need to use the adjustable screw at the derailleur end or near the shifter to put more tension.
Hi, you just got a new fan!!😊
Love your videos, but Apple is the superior fall flavor and scent, and I I'll die on that hill saying that, lol
I love Apple too tho 😭😭
whats the sleep quality like when you're out there? i always sleep like garbage when i camp and i have every non-nonsensically priced camping bed
This is beautiful sis 😍 🤧
De rallier prob happened because new gear cable stretched a bit. TH-cam on adjustment process it's really simple. Great outing I'll be following you from now on from Western Australia
Bummer about the chain skip. Many things can cause it. Usually it's just a quarter turn of the barrel adjuster to at least reduce the noise. The most recent time this happened to me, i was messing with the barrel adjuster to no avail and it was due to the B screw stripping out. I have another bike that skips but only on one gear so that's due to a worn cog (not likely to be your root cause since your bike is new).
you can tune rd using 2 screws on the top where it udjusts left to right, up n down.
Nice bike, all the best mate❤
*it is literally a 10 second super easy fix, if you done it once you know how it works :)*
your shifter in the back is either too far left or too far right.. thats why it is clicking
fo fix, you turn the dial where the shifting cable goes into your handlebar shifter
if you dont know which direction you can turn like 3 klicks to one side and see if it gets better, if not try the other direction (just always remember how much you turned which direction, makes it easier to get back to the original setting)
once it is aligned correctly you probably dont have to touch it for the next 5000km+
Great trip with awesome views! What ended up being wrong with it?
That looked like a lot of fun. I've yet to go bikepacking now that I bought a gravel bike but I got a mountain bike too. I'm hoping to get some done in late fall.
Enjoyable video. I suppose it was your derailleur hanger that got bent, so the shifting was misaligned. A spare derailleur hanger in your tool kit might be the solution? I also wonder why so few bikers use a kick-stand, I find them invaluable and well worth the extra bit of weight. Happy trails...
Best you get some bike mechanic skills under your belt
Jenna has grown so much more elegant compared to just a couple of years ago. She looks as though she's had plastic surgery! 🤩 Way-to-girl!
