2022 Icebear Champion - swingarm fix

- Before I can start with performance modifications, I needed to get the wobble out of the swingarm. I’ve put nearly 20 miles on the bike, since the fix, and it seems to be holding up. Time will tell.

mike just want to say thanks, ive watched all your ice bear videos, good tips and tricks
Just saw this. Thanks.
I didn't see a zerk fitting on the swingarm That's a must!!
I’ve messed with bikes for over 50 years. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bike with a zerk fitting on the swingarm. I’ve only had Hondas, maybe other brands use them. These have rubber bushings, not bearings. I don’t see where grease would help.
🛑🛑 You know, I stumbled onto your channel.
I’ve been thinking of reliving my childhood with an Ice Bear Champion 125, to be a “Stable Mate” to my Harley CVO Ultra Limited.
😂👍💯
I’ve been looking for a original CT70, but with little success. 🤷♂️
I want to Thank You for filling an evening of viewing.
Great Stuff 😀👍
It would be cool if we could add a zirk fitting through the swingarm to grease that bolt and those washers. Of course that would probably require a different bolt/ axle.
@@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors The swingarm is NOT supposed to rotate on the bolt. No zerk fitting or grease is needed.
@MiniBikeMike the swingarm doesn't rotate on bearings on the axle?
And if the bike were used to put trails for a few years you don't think that dirt would start eating between those washers and the swingarm/ frame?
@@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors I don’t think you understand how the swingarm works. No, there are no bearings. The bolt goes thru a steel sleeve. That sleeve is slightly wider than the rest of the swingarm. The bolt tightens the frame against that inner sleeve. The sleeve is held into place by vulcanized rubber, that attaches to both the sleeve and the inside of the swingarm. Because the bolt is holding the sleeve tight against the frame, it’s not supposed to move. As the swingarm cycles up/down slightly, the movement is in the rubber bushing between sleeve and swingarm. There is no need for a zerk or grease, there are no actual moving pieces, just the rubber bushing slightly twisting. The washers/frame won’t wear down, they’re not moving. The washers are simply helping hold the sleeve against the frame.
Thank you for the heads up like that fix I seen another video where the guy did the same thing except he kept the plastic pieces but put them inside. They fit right in kinda like that way, which reinforces the plastic pieces. Either way I guess will work.
Great video! My brother has some slop in his swingarm on his 1970 CT70. This might help him too!
Cheap, easy and safety related fix on that swing arm 🤙🏼
Fantastic video between making the mirrors usable which they really are not from the factory and a awesome swing arm repair for a little or no cost obviously most people are trying to repair the swingarm replacing the internal bushings which does not seem to be the real problem.
Thanks!
we have two and upgraded all bolts carrying a load, to grade 8: motor mounting bolts, etc...the little bikes will take off faster than you think and torques quite a bit
looks good with all the decals off it
I know you do a bunch with ice bear champion. Do you by chance know what the paint code is for the light blue ice bear champion? I can’t find it any where.
@@ericmcgarry4438 Sorry, I don’t have any info on paint codes.
Great troubleshooting Mike!
Hello Mike thanks for all the videos!!! I have this same bike and need to replace my chain after 4300 miles would you recommend the best chain replacement for the 2022 champion 125. Thanks Mike Ortiz
amzn.to/3WGYEOD
Common problem with all the clones. I replaced the swingarm on my 2012 clone with a
stock CT70 swingarm and bolt. It works great. I think that would be a better route
than the washers. You might consider that if you do some heavy mods.
Maybe I didn’t make it clear in the video…..the Icebear swingarm and the CT70 swingarm were basically identical. The difference was in the frames, the Icebear was slightly wider at the swingarm mount and they used the rubber lined cups to take up the space. Using a CT70 swingarm would have required the same fix. The rubber cups allowed to much play in the swingarm mount. The washers gave it a much more rigid surface and a larger surface against the frame. I’m super happy with the fix, no reason it shouldn’t last for the life of the bike.
good idea w/the washers
you could just see it looked way more solid...
I’ve put 30+ miles on the bike and it’s holding up great. Swingarm is still solid.
@@MiniBikeMike thats great
Seams like a easy fix.
Good job dude well done very informative I'm heavily considering getting one of these I would be stepping up from the Coleman
BT 200 X😊 thanks
Thanks.
Two comments: You should use stainless washers and you should add a zero fitting so that you can grease the bolt/bushing interface. Then you just grease from the middle of the swing arm gusset until the grease squirts out around both ends of the bolt inside and outside of the bushing.
All of that sounds goods, but really unnecessary. The fix I’ve done is perfect for the cheap, throw-away bike that this is. I’m guess the swingarms themselves will bend and trash the unit before this joint gives out. And, when it does, I’ll replace with an original Honda swingarm.
Think i have the same problem with my skyteam skymax 125, handy video, i hate that squirming under load, feels like something slipping like clutch or gears in certain gear and its quite unnerving.
I got rid of my swing on because the 190 swap I did broke it so I went with an aluminum one still holding up great after 3 years
There is a guy on eBay that produces those swingarm bushings priced pretty reasonable.
The bushings weren’t the problem. It’s rock solid now, with the original bushings. The problem is with the cups, they allow too much play.
Hey Mike….love the videos….what is the expected range of the icebear Champion? I would like to see how you tensioned the chain…
I would guess 40 to 50 miles per tank. The chain is tensioned by loosening the axle bolt and adjusting the tensioners on each side of the axle bolt.
I know what my next mod will be... Thanks!
just got a 2024 icebear and noticed at around 20 mph the entire front end seems to shake quite a bit. not sure why. wondering if the swing arm in back is causing this. it doesn't do this while coasting down hill at faster speeds, only when accelerating past 20 mph. seems very unstable and I don't feel confident on the bike when it does this. any ideas why? would appreciate any help. thanks.
@@DrLarryVanSuch I’ve not experienced that problem. I would look at the front wheel/tire and make sure something isn’t off balance.
Thanks for sharing.
I lost the clip on the master link on my Ice Bear chain. I want to replace the clip on the OEM chain. Do you know what size I need to order?
420 chain. Minimum of 84 links.
Mike, would you have a part # or any additional info on the shifter are you installed? I too do not care for the heel shifter on mine.
I used one that was part of a Lifan engine package and I didn’t use the shifter. There are lots of them on Amazon. I believe the splined shaft is 13mm.
Thanks, I will order 1
when installing the swing arm back is there a reason why you wouldn't install it with the nut on the other side so in the future you can easily remove it?
The swingarm bolt would need to be cut down. At its stock length, if you install it from the other side, the bolt will interfere with the foot brake pedal. It will work, if you shorten the bolt, I just didn’t feel like taking the time to do that.
Great videos! Is the swingarm still holding up well after the mod
500+ miles and no issues.
@@MiniBikeMike great thanks. Was debating whether to just start off with a new swingarm or take a chance with the washers and see if the ice bear swingarm holds up and doesn't twist or tear
Not to be a Ball B but if you remember all the moving joints of the the front end of cars had zerk fittings after they were replaced even the upper and lower control arms pivot points, sway bar bushings and had the same movement. Looks like you are working in an old car dealer ship? Thank You for the response minibike mike and have you seen the mini bike ride they have in outside of Phoenix AZ. once a year . Four hundred one lungers all in a pack going for a 40 mile ride. I don't know if you ever heard of Montauk New York at the end of Long Island but there's nothing but battery powered bikes out there and i will never own one. hahaha. I'm interested how the semi auto works and Maybe you could make video on how the semi automatic transmission works mike.
I know nothing about auto design, but if you look at a CT70 swingarm, the steel center sleeve is slightly wider than the rest of the swingarm mount. Honda designed it so that the sleeve would be what the frame is tightened down against. The sleeve isn’t intended to move. The movement is suppose to happen within the rubber bushings.
Sorry, I don’t do rides or shows, etc. I kinda stick to myself within this hobby.
If you’ve ever watched many of my videos, I don’t work on engines or transmissions. That type of work just doesn’t interest me.
@@MiniBikeMike Based on one of your recent videos, I made it a point to see why and how you swapped-out the rear swing arm on your '22 Ice Bear and if any problems. Solid Fix! Watched you ditch the squeaky shocks for a longer pair in the video.
@@horsewnoname872 The swingarm and shocks that I replaced were actually on my 2022 Amigo Rocky CT70 clone. Yeah, those shock were noisy and I twisted the original swingarm. The Icebear Champion still has its original swingarm and shocks.
Mike I have a question, I have an ice bear champion would you change exhaust to one without a catalytic converter? ALSO did you use the thick or thin fender washers?
Yes, I would swap out the stock exhaust and plan to do so when I reassemble my bike. I used two thin fender washers, one on each side.
Mike I have a question about an icebear chpampion
Is the Honda version a slightly better or much better option? Concerned as you indicated the honda has a similar swing arm issue.
I'm in Avon. I'm looking to buy one of these. How reliable are they actually? Can it maintain 45mph without it screaming with rpm? Does it hold up traffic? Thanks
I live out in the country, between Martinsville and Trafalgar. They are very reliable. They do need a little dialing in, when you first get it, but fantastic bikes. They come with too small of a counter sprocket on the engine. If you install a 17t sprocket, yes, it will hit mid 50’smph and do it at an RPM that’s reasonable. I put a better flowing exhaust, bigger tires and a better carb on mine. It tops out right at 60mph.
@@MiniBikeMike thanks for the insight, wasn't sure on this or the KPX mini 150 which I think is a little faster but this bike is cheaper. I'm 5'6 and do enjoy bigger bikes I'm pretty sure these are a decent size for what they are?
@@MiniBikeMike with the champion... does the semi auto gears jerk when you shift?
@@GainesGarage Sorry, I was away from my phone. No, no jerking. It’s actually kinda up to the rider and how you ride. You can have it shift as smooth or rough as you want, depends how hard you get on the throttle.
🛑🛑 Mike…is there a Miles/Hour Speedo that fits the Ice Bear housing to retrofit the bike?
There are speedos that fit, but none are any more accurate than what comes on the Icebear.
@@MiniBikeMike
Thanks Mike. 👍
👏🏼 awesome
I have one of these and the engine keeps popping, I changed the carburetor and it still does it. Any idea what's the problem ?
I’d start by adjusting the valves, then check timing.
@@MiniBikeMike thank you very much for answering I'll tell my brother
I guess I got lucky with mine. I've got about 600km on it, and just checked to see. Not enough there to bother with. Do you know of a dampened hub that will bolt on? I think that would be a big improvement of ride quality.
An original Cush Drive Honda CT70 rear hub should be a direct bolt in. The Icebear rim/tire should also bolt to the CT70 hub.
@@MiniBikeMike Thanks for the reply. Also I'm curious as to what size main jet you are using because I have the same MOLKT carb I saw on yours in another video. It took me quite a while to find the right size, and needle setting, and I'm not convinced I am entirely happy with it quite yet. When I am crusing at fairly high speed with lower RPM's I can't ease into the throttle without it wanting to bog. I kind of have to goose it. I'm not sure if this is simply operator error, or a carb setting as I am pretty new to this stuff.
When I was running the Molkt carbs, I used them straight out of the box, no adjustments, and had good luck with them. I’ve since changed to running 22mm Nibbi carbs and really like them.
@@MiniBikeMike If I remember right mine came with the jets about five sizes off (two bikes). I've been toying with the idea of getting a Mikuni. Maybe that would at least tell me if I'm just not keeping high enough RPM's. Anyway thanks for the chat, and have a great day.
I put a digital speedometer i bought on eBay works good
Yep, I have one coming. 👍🏻
@@MiniBikeMike it’s really nice makes the bike feel a little more modern
Can you put up a pic or a link?
I can sum up the problem with one word - China. Looks pretty good though.
Does anyone knows the specification for the rear and front sprocket so I can change it
Is it worth putting a grease fitting in the housing of the swing arm at the bolt and giving it a few shots of grease?? Also which CT 70 clone do u like the best , semi-automatic (cheaper) or manual clutch ? Is the semi automatic actually disengaging the Trany when shifting or mashing gears ??
The swingarm shouldn’t be rotating on the bolt. All the movement from the swingarm should be within the rubber bushings.
Both clones are pretty good, but for $600 cheaper, I’d take the Icebear.
what intake is that?
The stock intake that came on the bike.
These companies need to pay you for their "engineering Dept!" All the need to do is hire an Eglish translator, and boom, they'll have their problems solved.....uhhh, that's if they care.
just shim the inside of the dust cups
Much better fit, if you throw away the cups and add fender washers.
