    I was going to get the R5 last fall over the R6, and then the R6 II was announced and I got that. I did LOTS of testing of raw files and the 24 MP R6 II files upscaled to 45 MP and overlayed over the R5 files were mostly indistinguishable (zoomed to 100% on a 5K monitor). Using Adobe Camera Raw/LR's "Enhance Super Scale" feature the R6 II files scaled to 45 MP were actually more detailed than the R5 files (zoomed to 100% on a 5K monitor). There is nothing I could print with the R5 that could not also be printed (or cropped) with the R6 II. I found the AF accuracy and lenses made a bigger difference in sharpness and detail than the advertised resolution. I found the R6 II's AF to be slightly better than the R5's.
    As for not being able to print large with 24 MP I get a laugh at that. I shot with the 8 MP and 10 MP 1DIIN and 1D3 for a decade and had many billboard size prints made (even for ads for a radio station for city transit buses) and they all looked PHENOMENAL. 24 MP is actually quite huge for any size print and again if you really want to increase detail just use the included "Enhance Super Resolution" feature of LR/Adobe Camera Raw.
    With the nearly $2000 cdn that I saved gettting the R6 II , I invested in a really nice 70-200 2.8 III lens! Plus I saved so much more when it came to media and card readers. The only thing I miss is the 4k120 of the R5. Though, I shoot mostly at 4K60 and the R6 II has the best 4K60 on the market today (aside from the R3 I think)

      I appreciate this comment. I've been shooting for a few years now on older bodies (7d2 & 5d3) and am looking to get into the more professional side doing events and weddings. Choosing between r5 and r6m2 has been so difficult and the biggest factor has been the megapixels. Reading everything you mentioned, it makes sense and is nice to know that 24 is still a lot and plenty for just about any situation. I'm definitly feeling now like r6m2 is the way to go for me.

    I have an R6, coming from a 5DIII. Love it. I do only still photography, mostly travel and portraits. I also print images for display. 24x36-ish is about the max. A 45 mp R5 would give me no benefit for the substantial price increase. I sunk the difference into the sublime RF 50 1.2 lens. I think the preoccupation with looking at images only on a screen and zooming in to 200 percent to see detail differences is an obsession bordering upon neurosis. Did you ever go to a gallery and view large prints taken with a 1DX Mk III and say that the images sucked? No. Well, the R6 uses the same sensor, with the benefit of better low light performance and better lenses. For my type of shooting, qualities like low light performance, the color science of the sensor and micro contrast are much more relevant than mp. Before getting the R6, I briefly tried out the 5D Mk IV. As compared to the rich images of my 5D III, the Mk IV images had washed out colors that were a departure from the gorgeous Canon colors I was used to. The extra mp were worthless to me. If I did wildlife and cropped a lot, the R5 would probably be the better tool. But since I don’t, the R6 makes much more sense. This will be my camera for at least a decade. Just like I’ll keep my iPhone 13 Pro and not upgrade until at least the iPhone 20. For anyone coming from a 5DIII, the R6 will satisfy. Cheers.

      i'm looking to upgrade my old canon 7d that served me well over the years , do you think the R6 wound be a huge upgrade ? i'm also trying to work out if my old EF lenes would work with it . thank you

    • @yannisvaroufakis9395
      @yannisvaroufakis9395 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your crop sensor EF lenses for the 7D cannot be used on the full frame R6. You will notice a huge difference in autofocus accuracy (especially eye) and image stabilization in being able to hand-hold at lower shutter speeds, and a moderate difference in low light and dynamic range performance. Also, I found a huge advantage in mirrorless over DSLR in general because of the much smaller and lighter body and the ability to control exposure in real time through the EVF, thus making the metering modes almost obsolete, except if shooting in A+ full auto. With my R6, I don't have to look at my screen after each shot to make sure I got an acceptable exposure, as I did with my old 5D III. If I were you and wanted to jump into mirrorless, I'd probably skip the R6 and look at the R7, which is the mirrorless successor to the 7D. It has over 30mp as opposed to your 18, as well as the latest autofocus and image stabilization tech, and, because it is crop sensor, you can get a Canon adapter and use your old EF lenses, which will save you lots of money on buying RF lenses. I don't know what kind of photography you do, but if it includes any wildlife, the R7 would be far superior to the R6 in terms of the telephoto advantage of the crop factor and the greater pixel density of the sensor that will allow you more cropping ability. Also, the full frame RF glass is really expensive and BIG. My RF 50 1.2 L, for example, cost me $2,300 and is really heavy. Hope this helps. Good luck in your camera search.

    Very clear and honest opinion about R5. I have been thinking about moving to the mirrorless in the R6 II from my 5D MIV. However after listening to your thoughtful video; I will purchase the R5. However money is tight, so after the February camera show 2023, I will hope for the R5 II to happen. If I’m very lucky the new price on the R5 should drop.
    I made a trade of three very nice hunting rifles with scopes for the 5D MII, the EF 100-400
    F4.5-5.6L IS II and the EF 24-105 F4L IS II still in the box unused. The 5D MIV had 250 shutter releases.
    I gave up hunting at 72 for photographing birds and other wildlife. My outlook on nature and life in general has made a tremendous turnaround.

Do you have a noise comparison please? I can't find any proper comparison in the canon r5 and canon r6 ii photos anywhere. 🤔

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They say the R6 is lower noise but the reality is that’s it’s less MP not lower noise. Technically, it has bigger photocells on sensor. I like the R6 for the smaller files, there isn’t much need for the R5 resolution but the portraits and formals. I try to use that as my basis on which camera I use. Functionally they are the same, AF, etc.

      I shot as a Canon pro for 18 years and I owned the 5D IV for about 2 years. I got the R6 II last fall and wow, it's AMAZING! The AF is way better than the 5D IV - WAY BETTER. The noise and dynamic range is about 1 stop better than the 5D IV. The 24 MP can be upscaled to even 45 MP using Adobe Camera Raw/LR "Enhance" feature and in my tests the R6 II produces more detailed files than even the R5 (using the same lenses, shooting portraits, landscapes, even zoomed in to 100% on a 5K monitor).

I agree with you, how much better will the R5 II really be an is it worth it, like really? Everything I could ever want and need is in the R5 and there's only been a few times where I have ever picked up and used it and thought to myself, "hmm I wish this camera had...." and it's the screen. This helps me take pictures of excellent wildlife and sport photography but I do love the dark light features where I can still get a nice photo from a higher ISO value. It really depends on people but I also love video recording and having that 4k 60fps with no cropping is AMAZING! R6 suffice for people who just need the photo cause the R6 Mark II is just a tad bit better, user preference is always better than specification output! Have fun shooting!

    the r5 is wonderful, BUT considering that canon has a complete cinema eos lineup, i think they could have introduced waveform or false color to the r5 (which the r6 mark ii has now). Having huge competition going on with fujifilm and nikon i think they should start thinking about putting prores in the future r5...and the r5c is not a better hybrid in my opinion. Also it is really ugly with the fan and not as compact as the r5. Rather then going with 8k they should focus more on better codecs, heat distribution and maybe also on a stacked sensor

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like all the upgrade mentioned here hopefully in the R5II. I agreed they could have put all this features in the R5, waveforms, etc. But I do give credit to Canon for finally making a camera that can stand up to the competition for awhile even today in 2023 is rivaling that can stand on its own but again only after 1.6 firmware after 2 years later. Haha!!!
