Remember if you're not replacing all the shingles where your tarp is going, don't nail through your shingles otherwise you're just creating more holes for water to get in. Nail the tarp UNDER the shingles you lift up and not in a seam. Nail a 2x4 or something similar to the bottom of the tarp to weigh it down. Temporary fix and keeps holes to fix to a minimum.
Roofers came out Saturday claiming they could fix a 6x8 roof with a slight leak and now it looks like Niagara falls in that hallway! I'm gonna have to climb up there myself and try this because they wouldn't listen to me Saturday. Thanks for the video, I needed this!
If you can walk up there and identify the leaky tiles, it would be just as easy to replace the damage tiles. This is the simplest most intuitive repair job you can do in your house.
You are awesome! Thank you for being honest and ethical! We need more like you in the roofing biz. This is exactly why the owner of the company went into roofing. To be ethical! Thank you for this video!
Thank you. The insurance company wanted us to call a 'professional' that would have charged us a fortune -- and we don't have that kind of money. Doesn't matter if they say they are going to reimburse, the tarpers are going to want their money up front. Going to do this before it rains this weekend!
I like how he is calling out making sure other pro's are being professional and not half azzing the job..and this simple, to the point, not to technical like other TH-cam builders.
You got a good head on your shoulders and a good attitude. And you're a young buck who will experience great career longevity because of it. You can tell you're not just in it for the short term gain, you see the bigger picture and clients 100% appreciate that.
Thanks Steve! Looks like I will be doing this today. If not replacing the entire roof, I was wondering about the new nail holes. I read the comments and noticed your comment about using a sealant. Great job!
I was watching this video very speculatively. Until at the end when he made it clear that this was a band-aid. As a roofer I was saying to myself "that won't stop the leak for very long, just temporarily." Once this guy also said as much I was impressed with the informative video, thank you.
This is so much better than covering the entire area in a huge tarp. Large tarps catch wind easily and leave hundreds of nail holes for more water intrusion.
@@hailorhighwaterroofing just joking bro. Your video came in handy definitely for homeowners going thru hard times and not having roof knowledge. Great job on the video again
I love your video. Very informative and you took the time to demonstrate how to do the job. What if the damage is near the gutter area? How would you tarp that area? Thank you
Thank you so much for that video. I was going to just lay the tarp and hammer it on the leaky roof and not put it under the shingles. That was very helpful.
I got to put tarp after Milton but the shingles are all good, water intrusion , I expect at the vertical wall and the roof, I have cathedral ceiling, great video , thks I will for videos that show a tricky area
I’m right down the road and about to have to do this at home. We are in Watkinsville and the insurance company said it was our responsibility to get the tarp installed
Curious on your belt pouches. I estimate daily and need a better setup than a tool bag. What brand are they? Great video too this has come in handy so many times
About to go tarp a Friends house in North Port FL who were rejected by Fema after Hurricane Ian, thank you for posting this great video! #FloridaStrong
@@hailorhighwaterroofing By tarping just that one area, you’re admitting that the rest of roof doesn’t need it because it’s not leaking. I mean, it’s great for you. Gives you a lot of business. But it seems like a big waste of resources when you can just replace whatever is damaged and the roof will be good for many more years. But I guess that’s the way they do it and the insurance racket business, so why should I question it? I wouldn’t mind lower insurance rates.
What about tarping on a tar and gravel roof. We have a flat section of our roof that has to be replaced in the spring, but not possible for now. Can it be tarped similarly or does it have to be that seal they suggest? Leak is small but want to prevent further damage or moisture incoming.
Hey man, I have to re-shingle one side of the home due to west wind. Currently have a 20x40 tarp on the roof thats been good for the past 2 months. Since it's May now, rainy season is slowly going away. My question is, can you remove the shingles little at a time due to a sunny day one day and rainy the next?
Good video! I just did this to prepare an area of my roof for an upcoming storm, but I used roofing nails instead of cap nails. When I remove the nails and the tarp, is there any way to be sure it won't leak where I nailed it? Thanks for the help!
If Wind or High Water Roofing isn't over there (by all means use them, they seem like the type to not rip off the insurance or homeowner) Infinity Roofing is in that area.
Appears to work well on newer roofs where shingles remain pliable. Otherwise, overlay the tarp using one by twos to extend the tarp over the damaged surface. The reason that some roofers overlay from the ridge is that the repair should extend the full length of the ridge.
Hi...how long the tarp can last if i can't get the roof done in a month or so. Can it last until December? Because...i'll have enough $$$ to put a new roof.😢 and you make it so semple! Is that it? Please...reply! Thanks
I had some guy come out to tarp my roof and there were just 3 areas that needed it and he tarped the whole damn thing. Now I'm going to be faced with nail holes in perfectly good areas not to mention possibly damaged shingles the way he was hitting them. (Used those plastic capped nails). My question is -- when the tarp and those nails are removed, will the holes reseal themselves in time? -- thanks for any help
Overall you did a pretty good job but if there’s a heavy continuous down pour this is not water proof. One mistake you made is where you installed the tarp under the shingles where those two shingles meet in the middle you did not put the tarp all the way up under that next shingle up. So where those two shingles meet there’s a hole above that tarp. Other than that good explanation and trying to do what’s best for the client.
Here is a roofer who doesn't cheat on the terms of the job, who knows his craft, and who thinks of others. Admirable!
Thank you !
Very admirable..✔️

True, for sure, but not always possible. Upon removal, be sure to tar every hole made.
Yeah if you have a small area like in this video, I recommend just replacing the shingle. Especially if the rest of the roof is in good condition.
Yes I realized this the hard way and swung the other end of the tarp over the peak.
Ty
You nailed the tarp on TOP of the shingles! 😂 Duh

At home depot right now, almost bought a HUGE tarp
Saved me $50 at least 🎉
This was super helpful especially cause im going to have to do this fix on my own and most construction ive done is electrical and drywall.
Thank you so much! Currently in FL experiencing some price gouging. Were going to try this!
Do you have a video on how to tarp the ridge?
Yes I have the same problem trying to find out how to do it myself
What a wonderful service to your community. It is so kind of you to share your expertise.
Thank you for the excellent repair advice, very enjoyable, May the Lord bless and care for you and your family.

GREAT INFO. Q - If you are not replacing the entire roof, and just repairing and are waiting on roof shingles, will the nails hurt the roof? THANKS
Beautiful day for some roof work!
I sure wish you lived in my neighborhood. I am past the stage where I can work on the roof. Thanks for the video.
Very helpful. I also really liked that one of your concerns was trying to do this without ripping of homeownwer and ins company

Huh, darn fine instructional video. Quite helpful! Thank you!

What are you wearing on your boots? For roof/shingle work?
Thank you for your integrity.
What about the penetrations from all the nails you just put through good shingles? Do all those have to get replaced too?
Thanks, very informative. Saved me $750
Glad it helped!
What size nails do you recommend if are you using 2x2x8 to hold it down?
You're an honest man. Thanks for the tip!
I like it. Good information, bro. I'm doing that job tomorrow.
You are a wise young man.... I am gonna go save my tenant now! Thank you bud!
Your welcome!

Thank you for sharing such an informative video. The step by step is so easy to understand what you are doing. The extra tips and great 😃

Great video, thanks for the info. Wasn't sure how to secure the tarp correctly.
Glad it helped!
Thank you very much for your videos, I have a question. How do you cover the holes in those nails when it's time to remove them?
how do you nail that on without causing further leaks but putting nail holes in???
a steel putty knife can do the trowels job too yeah?
Curious on your belt pouches. I estimate daily and need a better setup than a tool bag. What brand are they? Great video too this has come in handy so many times
What do you do if it’s higher up towards the crest of the roof and the row of damaged shingles is wider than the area you need to tuck the tarp?
Simple to the point not too much blah blah 👍
That's how we operate!

do you have to use a tarp? can you use 6mil plastic?

I used rubberized washer screws for tarp so far so good with drill
This shit helped a lot brother. Way easier than how I was gonna do it. Gonna go pick up some of those nails!
Wow! Great tips! This was so informative. I was doing it all wrong! Thank you,Sir.

Are they really going to replace all the shingles for one bad one?
Not quite, there was hail damage on this roof. That's why it was paid for by the insurance carrier

If you use a tarp that is "heavy duty," you should get about 5 months out of it.
Would it be necessary to tar the nails head ?

Thanks for the helpful vid, how long are the cap nails? Is 1.5in the sweet spot?
could you just hit the area with a couple of coats of flex seal for a temporary fix?
Will it keep the rain out with just a tarp?
Under the right circumstances it will.

Best video yet on the subject thanks very much. Which it was the first one i watched

Isn't driving nails into the roof like that a bad thing? How do you deal with the nail holes after the tarp is removed?
Well this roof was replaced soon after the tarp was installed. However, if you need to seal up nail holes I suggest using JTS-1 MULE HIDE sealant.
Very helpful. Thanks

Can I use a clear shower curtain instead of a tarp?
Excellent. Nice presentation
What keeps water from leaking in around the left and right edges of the tarp?
So, will you need to end up replacing all those shingles you drove a nail through?
You can or you can seal the holes with roofing tar
Can I use a heavy duty staple gun. I’m afraid of making holes with nails
Can you use 90lb instead of a tarp?
I have never used 90lb for a tarp before.
