- We find the restored mine buildings of the famous Mascot Mine and the portal that joins 80 miles of tunnels connecting the Mascot with the Nickel Plate mine near Hedley BC!
One of the richest Gold discoveries ever in BC. Right beside the massive Nichol Plate Mine
The mine buildings were saved and restored by Bill Barley when he was minister of tourism but now belong to the local Indian Band who was offering tours to the mine for a short time.

@@benstout663 That is a complicated question, it wasn't posted as private when I went there but they have complained to me and said it was. The Mascot might be private property.

Is there some unwritten knowledge that if you do x, y or z, you'll eventually come out of any mine if you're lost?

I notice that there's various jobs mentioned at the Mascot mine exhibit, but no mention of the carpenters ? Whaat ?! -I Love to see all the timbering, frames, buildings etc and that huge 3D diorama model is fantastic. Excellent you've recorded that precarious set-up too, because it's all starting to come apart man.
They called them timbermen in the mines.
As a mining engineer, I have to say that you give one fine tour. Thank you.
Nice to see my model, as I've never been up there to view it in person! Actually shared the work with several people, but did a lot of research and photo-mining to try to figure out what was going on back in the day. Not perfect, but still looks close enough to the working mine. The building down below was the dormitory, by the way.

I thought the model was awesome I would love to have it in my museum if the site is abandoned!
@@exploringabandonedmines I went to the website for the tours and was shocked to see an advisement that there would be "no tours for the 2017 season" and that nobody had come back to upgrade it, suggesting they were done for good. I'd hate to think the model is going to just rot away, but they took it up there under a helicopter, and I can't imagine any other way to get it down!

This model is sooo impressive and beautifully displayed. Worthy of being on display at the Smithsonian.... or at least the Canadian version of the Smithsonian. Do you have a website of your other pieces? I am in awe.
what a massive undertaking that would have been when the mine first started operating back in the day, actually even the more recent renovations to the buildings back in the 80s would have been a challenge hey! bring on next weeks episode.
That view of the main yard at 8:40 is beautiful. What a scenic location for all this. It's a shame it is no longer in operation (for visitors, not mining). The drone footage in the beginning was mind-blowing. Humans will go to any extent for riches!
Frank this video explains a lot back in 1970 stopped in Hedley by cafe seen old mine workings now I see what we had no idea want was up the hill.The lower area was 1 st mine area that caught my interest and enjoying it all with a complety different out look .⛏️❤️🏆🤔 Thank you for reopening my eyes.
A lot of lumber was used to make this place, astounding the lumber bill. What a view! These levels, 2 mines and 80 miles of tunnels, wow. You'll be walking for weeks. Walking is easy, so i'm with you all the way. So far we have seen about 2 - 3 miles of mine from our prospective, You on the other hand, sure see more than we do. 7 oz per ton, wow. How many tons of material left this mine. The Math boggles my mind.
Beautiful scenery and artifacts everywhere. Too bad it’s not being maintained and preserved. Thank for sharing it with us Frank. Mining built the frontiers in the USA as well.
I went through this mine back in the 70's . Was in much better condition. I went up many of the strait up ladders. Was so cool. We encountered the ice too but also met up with an Ice figure that was taller than me.( I am 5ft7) Wish you could see what I had seen.
This kind of architecture is my absolute favorite, sprawling cabin style buildings all chained together.

I grew up in Hedley and I never did go on the mine tour back when it was operating. I got a summer job at the museum and learned so much about the mines but it’s really something else to see it up close! Thank you so much for filming this! I really enjoyed watching.

Went on the first nations tour of this mine a few years back. Was a cool tour.Saw all the outside buildings, and went a couple of hundred feet into the mines main haul level to the sound equipment you stopped at. What a trip. And those stairs....holy shit, a workout for sure.The trip up to the mountain top was something else. Great video. Brings me back. Looking forward to part 2.Thanks for taking us on such an amazing journey Frank!

Those miners must've been part mountain-goat, to maintain such an operation perched upon/clinging to that steep cliff-side. I was thinking the same thing as u, knee-wise, going down. Don't even want to imagine what the return trek must be like!

I remember when they opened up this place for tours. By the time I got to go it was already closed again. So this is as close as I am going to get . Thanks for the tour. It probably is very similar to Britannia Beach Mine out side Squamish B.C. There is alot of mine to explore up there. That mine ran for 70 years (or there a bouts).
I will have to get out to Britannia some day.
It looks like it would have been a brilliant tourist attraction, but if it's located in the middle of nowhere you're going to struggle to attract visitors.
Dunaskin ironworks (near me, in Scotland) suffered a similar fate. A brilliantly preserved industrial relic in a remote location.

Those stoped out areas are insane. The volume of rock that must have been removed is mind boggling, that had to be some incredibly rich ore.
Wait until you see some of the stopes in the Dickson decline they are even bigger!
I'm from north idaho down here in the silver valley, we have some cool mines and nice mountains but nothing like that area. Very beautiful up there. Thank you for sharing that with us. Great video

I would LOVE to visit this place next time I'm in BC! I can't believe they couldn't make it work as a tourist attraction. Must just need better marketing / management. Mind you I'd never heard of this place until I saw this latest series of your videos, so maybe you'll reignite interest in this place!

Wow sulfides a plenty !! More than i have ever seen in any of the mines you have taken us inside of. It just seemed to be everywhere in very heavy
concentrations - if that is a good sign than it must have been lucrative - 7 ounces to the ton. I believe it. By the looks of it still some left.
I just get excited that ore could still be extracted, if only as a possibility. Very cool and so much more to see !

Truly enjoyed the mine exploration, I’m an old miner myself , love to see the insides , really educational...I’ve never been n a gold mine but I have been in coal surface and underground, rock quarry mines underground limestone, sand mines etc ..not many people can get used to the ideal of underground mines there claustrophobic...
What is going to happen to that magnificent model of the mine!? OMG! THAT, in it self, is a treasure! 7 ounces of gold to a ton!!?? So little for such hard work!😳 Thanks for sharing your adventures again!😘

The walls were kicked out because the crooks were looking for hidden jars or whatever of gold.... I spent 18 years in Alaska and explored many dredges and abandoned mines. Same evidence of looters hunting for "free" gold..... Good work guys!! Great video!!! Thanks

Hedley has always interested me since I was a little kid on the way to Penticton for summer holidays, I remember coming into Hedley and hearing the stamp mills pounding away and wondering how anybody slept in the valley. That's a beautiful part of the province.
I love your videos, Frank. My boy is really into exploring old mines here in the UK. He's been all over the country to burrow his way into some tight spots. There was one in Wiltshire where they got busted by military guards ... that one got a bit hairy...

There was a small village for the miners fairly close to the mine complex that was called Nickel Plate. I visited it in '89 as part of a group tour. There was once a bowling alley there. You couldreach the town-site off Hwy. 3 just east of Hedley through a swing gate. The gravel road climbed up fairly steeply in switchbacks but it was in decent shape at that time so that non- 4 wheel drive vehicles with a decent clearance could make it.

Awesome info thanks! I miss Bill Barlee! He's a legend! My ex had a hat made for me of him sitting in his chair with his jean jacket on doing the "Mr Burns" hands. I have lots of hats that I like but it's my favorite for sure! Figures that amazing stairs to a mine from the road would be built when he was in government.

Wow now that's a find for sure.. Pretty amazing how they built all the structures , more amazing is how they got the winch and all that equipment upon that hill side.. You say more in a series , yes please please do more of this one.. What would be cool , fly your drone out in front of all of it and film all sides , front and back..
