  • The Story Of The Incredible Abandoned Gold Mine On The Mountain Side. Explore # 106
    B.C Canada
This was my first stealth camping experience. Getting here was extremely challenging. After meeting up with my exploring friends from B.C. (Josh, Nikki and Lucas) We started the explore by 4x4ing to our parking spot. Once there we hiked up the mountain for about 1 hour. Once at the entrance of Mascot Mine we had to now walk down hundreds of stairs.
The Mascot Gold Mine was in operation from 1936 to 1949. 7.1 tones of gold was extracted from the mascot mine. That is over 400 million dollars in today's market.
130 men worked the Mascot Gold Mine. Each man made approx $4.75 per day. Many of the men actually lived and passed away at the mine site.
After shutting down in 1949 the site was abandoned for many years after. In the 1990s, the insurers for the mascot mine property was concerned that visitors to the site could lodge liability claims for personal injuries. They wanted the mascot mine to be burnt down. This plan did not go through thankfully. In 1995 the Upper Similkameen Indian band re-roofed several buildings to help preserve them. The province then bought the mine site for $740,000. They also fixed and stabilized the structures over the following years. In 2003 the province provided $300,000 to retrofit the site for tourism. The wooden structures included former dormitories, a cookhouse and machine sheds. In 2004 the mascot mine site opened for tours. It later closed for tours in 2017. The buildings clearly needed more repairs and attention for the structures to last. In 2021 The province gave a grant of $800,000 and they plan to reopen for tours in 2023 after many repairs and upgrades have been completed.

    About me:
I have been exploring abandoned places since I was a child and now I would like to film the explores and share the videos with you.
My father took me to my first abandoned house when I was 7 years old. I remember going into the house and a old farmer came in and told us "we better watch out as the floors are all rotten and unsafe". Ever since that day I was hooked on exploring abandoned places.
If you have a location you would like to share with me or want me to explore for you please send me an email at abandonedurbexcanada@hotmail.com and I will give you full credit for the share in the description and during the video if you choose.

It was a completely different world back then to built a town on the side of a mountain. I'm really glad they didn't destroy that history.

The rats served their purpose in the mines and are still living there LOL. So glad you were able to see /experience it in person and took your time filming and recording with the drone to share with us. And your shots in this are just incredible. I hope you got lots of standalone pictures here, because I'm sure lots of them could make it into a BC tourism magazine. I was there around 15 years or so back when they were running tours. When we were down below in Hedley chatting with a guy he was using a mirror to signal to someone up at the Mascot location. There used to be a beautiful little church nearby on First Nations territory - it couldn't help but catch your eye as you drove past. Unfortunately it was burned down last year.

22:25 the photo of the "honey box" made me laugh out loud because it has nothing to do with actual honey. On level ground they had a "honey wagon," which was used to transport your sewage to a disposal location. 🤣
49:47 that appears to be shaker tables. The ore would be poured into them, then the vibrators set into motion, and it would filter out the smaller bits.
Thanks so much for taking me on this absolutely incredible explore I never got to do myself. Many years ago, while driving through Hedley, I noticed those buildings way up on the mountain. I very much wanted to explore, but it was mid-winter and I was travelling alone, so I couldn't go up. The mine remained very much on my mind, but I never had the opportunity to return. Now I'm old and disabled, and physically unable to make that climb. Now, through your eyes, I finally got to see the place. Many, many thanks. 🥰

Watching from Scotland. What an amazing site, scenery (reminds me a bit of our highlands) and video, thank you for having the patience when exploring to stop and take time at the old tour boards that described each section. There's simply too much for me to comment on, other than to say you have to admit, you would have freaked out more than a little bit if a voice had say 'hello?' back at you on the old phone! Congrats on the 100k subs and thanks again for this amazing video.

great to see this historic place! we went back to BC this summer and were so happy that there were no fires, tent caterpillars or pine beetles killing everything. The similkameen is not one of my native stomping grounds so this was really nice to watch.

Good explore. Nice views. Too many stairs lol. I'm afraid of heights so couldn't go there. Looks so steep. Congrats on getting 100,000 subscribers
