Lots of people commented that I should have kept some of the jeans for myself. I was a cattle rancher and the way we always did things is that when you gave your word you followed through that is what I have always done. We didn't get to keep anything but I am not complaining we got to explore some awesome mines!

Exploring Abandoned Mines I believe the character of a man is directly bound by his word. You said anything you find you would return it to the owner. I believe that honesty is worth more than the jeans itself.

The man invited Frank there and all these people comment that he should have STOLE the jeans. A man's word is his most honorable attribute .....far more important than the insatiable and unquenchable desire for money. We need more Franks in this world.

Sure I get that you kept your word. As I would have, but if I was the owner of the mine, I would have let you keep one or two.
This man wouldn't have made it down there for the rest of his life. It's sad to think about honestly.
did he even say thanks at all? or did he just get all on his high horse about the oldest jeans in the world.

  • @DM-ic9ty
    @DM-ic9ty 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1122

Surprised no one has pointed out WHY all those jeans would be down there. The jeans were very expensive even then and typically belonged to the mine/mine owners themselves. So as miners went to and from work they would have regular clothes on, once they got into the mine (near naked) they would exchange jeans with the workers at the end of their shift. They would simply leave the jeans for the next shift. Often times, as mines played out or shut down, absolutely EVERYTHING would be left where it lay, under assumption that conditions or prices would improve and they could simply go back to work, grab their jeans and start digging.

Levi's Fact: Levi Strauss & Co. Started out using metal rivets to attach metal straps to horse blankets.Jacob Davis Nevada tailor wrote in 1872 to successful merchant Strauss the secret of those pins is the rivets I put in them pockets"I cannot make them up fast enough...My neighbors are getting jealous of the success and unless I secure it by patent papers everyone will make them. The duo quickly patented the durable pants in 1873.The oldest Levi's jeans then were called "waist overalls" which are 136 years old and were produced in 1879.They are kept in a fireproof safe and only 2 people know the combination in San Francisco. The marketing slogan for the pants then was "For men who toil".There are no belt loops on the XX 'just a few buttons around the waist to attach suspenders, the preferred method to keep pants up in the 19th century and a cinch in the back for adjustable size.Hey Frank the pair with the leg missing was for patching purposes and came that way from Levi's.Another pair nicknamed Calico for the California Silver Mine- Date 1890 discovered in the 40's.the inside pocket features the 2 horse trademark. Which was introduced in 1886 and was to signify "the durability of a pant that customers would wear for decades and couldn't be pulled apart with two horses ".

I really appreciate your work and the braveness you proved when entering such a deep and narrow, unsafe hole which easely could be a grave. I remember one sign next to such a hole: "Don`t enter, stay alive." I think you guys should deserve a finders reward. So Mr. pit owner who definitely does not put his life in danger to go down there is going to sell one of these garments and whatever the auction brings belongs to you. This would be fair! And I see it from the owners side when thinking of it because I would have stomach ache whenever I see these jeans and know I just took it for free.
On the other side hanging it on a wall in this makeshift museum gradually destroys all clothes as they are exposed to uv light. Especially in this location. Actually they belong into a dark locker of a climatized museum. So poeple in 300 years can still see a blue jeans from 1880. After several years on a wall you will see how the cloth color is fading.
And one more time: I admire your work! Greetings from Berlin !

The miners actually took their jeans off because at the time, jeans were expensive. You would leave them for the next guy that came after your shift. Mines frequently shut down, so they would leave jeans there for the next shift expecting to come back to work. Many, never did.

I worked for years in a small worn out sawmill that was at about 7,000 ft. elev. We used torches to thaw frozen air lines and conveyors. Denim was the best fabric for a wick. Wrap a 2x2 with it, wire it tight and soak it in a bucket of diesel and it was good to go. Maybe they used it for light or to burn out scorpions and snakes and such

Guy is a narcissist for sure. Doesn’t say thank you, talks over everyone, and a lot of “I know” when someone says something. Cuts you off when you talk about other mines. I wouldn’t expect anything from that guy.

The owner of the mine sure hit it rich and didn't have to do anything other than reap the rewards of the explorers labor. I sure hope he gives them a pair of old dirty pants.

Yeah that owner is a real Mc. Asshole. He sat up top digging at his hemorrhoidal ass while these guys risked there life in finding those jeans. Not any sort of gratitude or respect came from that old kodgers mouth just dollar signs in his cataract ridden eyes.

Natural matreal and very strong Lewis Jeans pants in those days were very resistant to hard work. It lasts a long time. Rare explicit jeans originals are the owners of today. Much more durable than modern jeans with a substitute for pvc synthetics.Good video 😎👍

The oldest pair of Levi’s found was in Nevada. The Levi company documented them as being one of the first four that were originally made. They tried to purchase them from the guy that found them, but he refused to sell. This was back in about 1982.

In an old mine that probably has produced more money in jeans than it ever did in gold, silver, or other valuable.
